Asus zenfone 2 laser camera review. ⇡ Communications

Asus Zenfone 2 Laser is not the most compact smartphone by the standards of its 5-inch diagonal. Its dimensions are 143.7x71.5x10.7mm, weight is 144 grams. In terms of dimensions, it is quite large when compared to other phones. For example, it is larger than the 5.2-inch Huawei Honor 7 and 5-inch Huawei P8 Lite. At the same time, the Asus Zenfone 2 Laser fits well in one hand, but it is not so convenient to use - the power key is located on the top edge, making it difficult to reach. Fortunately, the screen turns on and off by double-clicking on it, which solves this problem.

Another controversial point is the volume rocker on the back, like the LG G3. For the owner of long fingers, this is not very comfortable - during tests, the smartphone tried to fall out of the hands several times when the finger tried to reach these buttons. This also makes it difficult to operate the camera, since the volume keys are often used for shooting or zooming. If you want to use them, you will have to press them on the back of the device almost blindly.

From the front, the smartphone resembles the Asus Zenfone 5 - the same wide frames around the display. Therefore, the ratio of screen area to surface area is not the highest - 67.1%. The back and sides of the device are almost identical to the rest of the Zenfone 2 (for example, ZE550ML): a rounded, removable, convex back with a row of speakers at the bottom. The smartphone differs from its counterparts only in the laser sensor near the lens.

Asus Zenfone 2 Laser is made of plastic, but it is built with high quality. The removable cover does not play and fits tightly to the body. Rechargeable battery, unlike the Zenfone 5's battery, you can remove it and change it. During the tests, the smartphone did not lose its presentation, except that its matte soft-touch plastic back began to wear slightly.

Asus Zenfone 2 Laser can be purchased in several colors: black, white, red, silver, blue, purple and gold.

Screen - 4.2

We can call the Asus Zenfone 2 Laser display high-quality for its price tag - good color rendition, clear image and protective glass. The only things we didn't like were the low contrast for an IPS matrix and the narrow range of screen brightness.

The display resolution of Asus Zenfone 2 Laser is 1280x720 pixels. With a 5-inch diagonal, we get a pixel density of 294 ppi - clear enough for the eyes and “gentle” in relation to the device’s battery. In addition, the screen received an average-quality oleophobic (grease-repellent) coating and a new Gorilla Glass 4 protective glass.

What we didn’t like were the viewing angles of the display - IPS matrices have them much wider. The brightness range is quite narrow - from 26 to 282 cd/m2. On a sunny day, the screen is already difficult to read, and if you turn on the screen in the middle of the night, then at first it will dazzle your eyes even at minimum brightness. The smartphone has an auto-brightness function with smooth adjustment. Interestingly enough, the screen has a glove mode that makes the screen surprisingly sensitive. Most devices, even if they work with gloves, the display responds very slowly, but here you can not only answer a call, but also launch a specific application and calmly scroll through desktops (tested with leather winter gloves). The image contrast is about 600:1, again, this is not much for an IPS matrix. The color gamut covers 98% of the standard and practically does not “fall out” beyond its limits. Color deviations are average by smartphone standards. Perhaps the most interesting thing about ZenFone screens is the ability to customize color temperature, blue filter, and even color saturation. But, most likely, for most users this will not be interesting.

Camera

Asus Zenfone 2 Laser has two cameras - a 13 MP main camera and an 8 MP front camera. Despite the feature in the form of laser autofocus, we can only call them average for their resolution. But still, the cameras are quite worth the money spent on a smartphone. For taking pictures on the go and replacing the point-and-shoot camera on the go, it’s quite suitable.

The main feature of the smartphone is the laser, which allows the camera to focus very quickly. The manufacturer claims that the camera takes about 0.1 seconds to do this. It really does focus faster than other smartphones, but with a small caveat: when you point the camera at an object, it takes some time for it to understand that it’s time to focus. As a result, focusing takes longer than the LG G4, but still less than most smartphones. Another small drawback of the laser is that the frame does not always turn out clear the first time. If you simply point the lens at something and shoot, the laser may not focus correctly at first, resulting in a blurry photo. So we recommend trusting, but checking, or just taking 2-3 frames to make sure you take a clear photo. The camera also features an HDR mode for enhanced shadow detail. It’s just a pity that the auto mode can’t detect and turn it on independently when needed, as happens with many modern smartphones(for example, Lenovo Vibe Shot).

The level of clarity and detail in the frames is normal for its resolution, but the frames are not always uniform in terms of sharpness, and at the slightest deterioration in lighting, the camera begins to make a noticeable “noise.” In the dark, Zenfone 2 Laser takes average pictures; it has a special mode for shooting with poor lighting, but we cannot say that it helps much in this matter.

In terms of video shooting, there is nothing unusual, Full HD video (1920x1080) at a speed of 30 frames per second, there is even slow motion. The only unusual thing is the use of a laser; it greatly helps to keep moving objects in focus, which improves the quality of shooting dynamic scenes.

The 8 MP front camera copes well with selfies and offers a whole range of decoration effects - thinner cheeks, whiter skin, bigger eyes, blush - whatever your heart desires. True, if you set all of them to maximum, you may no longer recognize yourself in the photo. In addition, she knows how to shoot videos Full HD resolution, like the main camera.

Working with text - 5.0

The Asus Zenfone 2 Laser uses its own comfortable keyboard. There is support for Swype and markup of additional characters. It's easy to switch between languages using a separate key. And what is there in the keyboard settings - there are personal dictionaries, word prediction, keyboard height adjustment, long-press delay, and even the thickness of the stroke that is displayed when handwriting.

Internet - 4.0

Browsers can be found natively on Asus Zenfone 2 Laser Google Chrome and the proprietary “Browser” from Asus. The first one is most likely already known to you. IN mobile version it can sync with desktop to "remember everything" - like your tabs and history. Your own “Browser” is rich in settings. So, you can turn on the control panel in it - when you drag your finger from the edge of the screen to the center, icons for various actions will pop up in a semicircle. In the browser you can find settings for personal data, fixing the text scale, loading graphics on pages, and so on.

Communications - 2.6

According to this criterion, Asus Zenfone Laser 2 stands out only for its LTE support, but otherwise everything is the same as everyone else’s:

  • typical Wi-Fi b/g/n (not high-speed and not dual-band)
  • Bluetooth 4.0 with A2DP profile support and reduced power consumption
  • pretty fast LTE Cat. 4, up to 150 Mbit/s
  • A-GPS with GLONASS support
  • FM radio (only works with headphones).

The smartphone has two slots for MicroSIM cards. At the bottom end there is a Micro-USB connector, it is used to connect to a PC and to charge a smartphone. Moreover, we connected flash drives to it and external devices via OTG cable - everything works.

Multimedia - 3.6

Asus Zenfone 2 Laser does not support all common audio and video codecs. Thus, the smartphone refused to play music in FLAC format, as well as TS, RMVB, MOV and WMV videos.

The smartphone comes pre-installed with an interesting audio player with a bunch of settings, including an equalizer. The video player will no longer be able to please you with its wide functionality - you can simply watch a video and rotate the image by clicking on a separate icon.

Battery - 3.1

Time battery life Asus Zenfone 2 Laser is average, but this is already good, considering that almost all Zenfone simply discharge indecently quickly. Perhaps this was achieved thanks to a rather dim screen and not the most powerful processor.

The Asus Zenfone 2 Laser ZE500KL lasted 8.5 hours when playing HD video (at maximum display brightness with Airplane mode). The result is good, even better than Asus Zenfone 2 ZE551ML and the same as Huawei Honor 6. But when listening to music, the smartphone no longer impressed - it only lasted for 42 hours, almost like the budget Alcatel Pixi 3 (4.5). In an hour of running the GeekBench Battery Test, the device immediately lost 20% of its charge, and this is a rather weak result, given the dimming of the screen brightness in the test. After half an hour of demanding games, the smartphone lost 15% of its charge - an average result, about the same as Huawei Honor 7. Included with the device charging in progress at 1A. It fully charges Zenfon in about 2.5 hours - a normal indicator for such an output current and a battery capacity of 2400 mAh.

The Asus Zenfone 2 has quite a few power saving modes (it's quite confusing at first): "normal", "high performance", "saving", "ultra saving" and "custom mode". Everything is clear with the first three, but the “super saving” mode means turning off all networks, leaving only the phone functions. The custom option allows you to adjust the operation of the processor, applications, networks, screen brightness and Extend Standby (the latter means disabling notifications in “sleep mode” from pre-selected applications).

Performance - 2.0

For the short time that Zenfons have existed, we have become accustomed to the fact that these are devices with high performance for their price category. In this regard, the Asus Zenfone 2 Laser ZE500KL is an exception - it is only average in terms of power. Only 2 GB of RAM remind us of its former greatness.

The smartphone received a quad-core Qualcomm MSM8916 Snapdragon 410 processor with a frequency of up to 1.2 GHz. The smartphone works quite quickly, quickly scrolls through desktops, and applications do not slow down, but it can still freeze for a couple of seconds at a completely unexpected moment. Sometimes the interface does not respond to some actions, for example, pressing the call button - the device simply slows down for 1-2 seconds.

It is better not to consider a smartphone as a gaming platform - in heavy games, either the graphics settings are “cut off” or the image will not be smooth. So, in NOVA 3 it’s just terribly slow, Asphalt 8 runs more or less normally only on low graphics settings (the first levels), but mediocre games, like Minion Rush, run with a bang. We checked whether the smartphone overheats during operation. During a 20-minute run in Asphalt 8, the Asus Zenfone 2 Laser case heated up to 44 degrees in the upper right corner, in other places the temperature did not exceed 36-40 degrees. Not too hot, but nothing outstanding either.

If you look at the benchmark data, they clearly indicate an average level of smartphone performance:

  • GeekBench 3 - 1437 points (almost the same as Lenovo Vibe Z2)
  • AnTuTu 5.7 – 23353 (lower than Huawei Honor 4X)
  • in 3DMark Ice Storm Unlimited - up to 4348 (almost two times inferior to the Samsung Galaxy A5 (2016).

The smartphone's capabilities are sufficient for calls, working with the camera, instant messengers and most applications and games. If you suddenly plan to play fancy games, then it’s better to sit down at a PC. Well, or choose a more powerful model.

Memory - 4.0

Built-in volume Asus memory Zenfone 2 varies depending on the modification - it is either 8 GB or 16 GB. In the version with a larger memory capacity, 10.2 GB is available to the user. For the middle class, this is the norm, but you can not limit yourself and use a memory card with a capacity of up to 128 GB. It is worth noting that the slots for SIM and MicroSD cards are separated, while other manufacturers like to “sin” and combine them into one, forcing you to choose between one of the SIM cards and additional memory. Important point— most games and applications (except pre-installed ones) can be moved to a memory card without any problems.

Peculiarities

The main feature of the Asus Zenfone 2 Laser, based on the name, is laser focusing. In addition, we note the volume key on the back of the device, the proprietary Asus ZenUI interface, support for LTE and two SIM cards, as well as a “glove” mode.

The smartphone is running operating system Android 5.0, over time the manufacturer plans to update to Android 6.0. Initially, a lot of different software is preinstalled on the device, including simple editors and programs for collages. It's funny that there is a separate application that uses a laser - this is Laser Ruler, or just a ruler (measuring the distance from the sensor to the object, but only within 40 cm). Not everyone will find this number of programs useful, but the saddest thing is that most of them simply cannot be removed.

The proprietary interface of the smartphone can be praised - it has many options for customizing the phone, desktop, widgets and everything else. True, it’s not always immediately clear where to look for what, and searching through the settings doesn’t find everything you need. For example, if you type “glove mode”, it will not appear among the results, although it is there and is in the individual settings of Asus.

Smartphone ASUS Zenfone 2 Laser ZE500KL is a simplified version of the ZE550KL, featuring a smaller display diagonal, less RAM and a smaller battery. However, the device deserves special attention, and, first of all, it is interesting because of the presence of laser focusing, which was previously the province of much more expensive smartphones. Sales started in the fall of 2015, and at the time of writing the review, the approximate cost of the smartphone is $185 and up for the version with 16 GB of memory. The younger version with 8 GB is very difficult to find on sale.

ASUS Zenfone 2 Laser is available in several colors. The design is elegant and attracts attention. The lower part of the case on the front side has a gradient, iridescent pattern structure. The case is made of plastic, the back surface of which has a convexity in the middle, gradually tapering closer to the edges. Thus, the case thickness at the edges is only 3.5 mm. The lid is textured to resemble metal and does not slip. It is worth noting the non-standard location of the volume swing, which may seem inconvenient, but in most cases it is a matter of habit.

Specifications ASUS Zenfone 2 Laser ZE500KL

The smartphone does not have top-end, but very decent technical components.

CPU

Good operating speed is ensured by the 4-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 MSM8916 (1.2 GHz). The Adreno 306 video chip cannot boast of special performance, however, in conjunction with the processor and sufficient amount of RAM, the smartphone copes well with the assigned tasks, be it Internet surfing, working with applications, etc. The interface works quickly, but resource-demanding games run well only on medium graphics settings. For this level of device this is quite enough.

Memory

Smartphones come with 8 and 16 GB of main memory, and since the younger version is not widespread, 16 GB is quite a respectable amount of storage. This is plenty enough for games, applications, and even user content. Additionally, there is a microSD slot that supports memory cards up to 128 GB.

There is 2 GB of RAM. Firstly, this emphasizes the middle class of the device, and secondly, this amount of RAM is more than enough for fast and stable operation of the smartphone.

Autonomous operation

Battery capacities of 2070 and 2400 mAh are installed in the younger and older versions, respectively. Since this review is mainly about the older version, let's look at what the 2400 mAh battery is capable of. Either this is due to the optimization of the software and hardware, or the battery is of such high quality - but the user can count on the device operating for two days, under normal, average load. After 1 hour of using the camera to take photos, the charge level will drop by only 11%. The battery charge will last for 12 hours of continuous video viewing. maximum level brightness, and with network modules disabled. Battery life when gaming is impressive. After playing Asphalt 8 for five hours, there is still 60% charge left, given that data transfer was turned on.

Camera

The main feature of ASUS Zenfone 2 Laser is a 13-megapixel camera with laser focusing. The advantage of this solution is instant (0.2 s) focusing on the necessary objects, as well as the ability to get a higher quality photo in unfavorable shooting conditions. The camera interface is replete with an abundance of settings, the ability to select different modes, even manual setting shutter speed and aperture. The camera sensor from Toshiba received a 5-element Largan lens with f/2.0 aperture, as well as a two-color flash.

This is not to say that the pictures come out perfect, but most users claim that they are completely satisfied with the quality of the photos. Especially good result obtained in daylight in sunny weather. Contrary to expectations, the night shots are not impressive.

The 5 MP front module does a good job of shooting close-range objects, such as self-portraits. The picture may be slightly blurred.

Display

5" TFT IPS display leaves a positive impression: maximum viewing angles, a decent amount of brightness, rich colors. The display is protected by high-strength Gorilla Glass 4. Easy control of the sensor and the ability to quickly get rid of traces of use (fingerprints) are ensured by a high-quality oleophobic coating. Thanks to the Splendid function, you can change the color “temperature” of the image.

Network communications

The smartphone has support for 2 SIM and works in 2G/3G/4G LTE networks. Separately, it is worth mentioning the GPS module. Satellites are found quickly even the first time you turn them on (3 satellites in 16 seconds), and you don’t need an Internet connection for this. Support available satellite system GLONASS navigation. Various peripherals (keyboards, mice, flash drives, and even hard drives with additional food) are easily recognized by the smartphone thanks to USB OTG.

Sound

The smartphone has a high-quality main and earpiece speaker. The sound is loud, does not contain extraneous noise and creaks. The call can be heard well, just like the interlocutor during a telephone conversation. High-quality headphones will provide appropriate sound.

Software

The smartphone runs on Android 5.0.2 OS with the proprietary ZenUI shell. The shell expands the functionality, adding features such as themes and fonts, controlling the smartphone using gestures, “children's mode”, and much more. A lot of attention was paid to the software part, so the system works stably. The software is constantly being improved and updated, so when you buy an ASUS smartphone, you can be sure of its continued support.

Pros and cons of ASUS Zenfone 2 Laser ZE500KL

Advantages

  • Software support by the manufacturer, stable operation of the device;
  • Laser autofocus;
  • The display is protected by Gorilla Glass 4;
  • Attractive design, several body colors;
  • Decent amount of RAM and main memory: 2/16 GB;
  • Remarkable battery life, considering the battery capacity.

Flaws

It is very difficult to identify any obvious drawback in such a device, especially considering the cost of the device. Perhaps, for some, the location of the volume control buttons will be a drawback, which will make choosing a case problematic.

Our review of the ASUS Zenfone 2 Laser smartphone

ASUS has definitely managed to release a quality product in the mid-price segment. It combines a nice design, good hardware and optimized software part. To summarize the review, I would like to note: ASUS Zenfone 2 ZE500K is a smartphone with an optimal price/quality ratio.

    - 2-SIM (the slot is not combined, i.e. you can put a memory card and two SIM cards);
    - 4 cores, 2 GB RAM, 16 GB internal memory, 4G support, Android 5.0.2;
    - Corning Gorilla Glass 4;
    - Works smoothly and quickly (no freezes);
    - Fast GPS;
    - Removable battery;
    - Very nice design;
    - I liked locking/unlocking with a double tap on the screen;
    - Enough good battery(I have 2400 mAh).
Flaws
    For me there are no shortcomings, unless, of course, you find fault with the little things.

    Well, if you find fault, here are some minor inconveniences:
    1. You can’t turn off the sound by turning it over incoming call and alarm clock;
    2. There is no backlighting of touch keys;
    3. Questionable convenience of the volume buttons on the rear panel, perhaps you just need to get used to it;
    4. Screen brightness is rather weak;
    5. Few accessories.

A comment

Overall, I'm more than satisfied with the device. I didn’t even expect to get such a device for such a price (I bought it for 11690). In my opinion, a very decent device.

For those who doubt it, take it boldly, you definitely won’t regret it.

By the way, I have already gotten used to the minor shortcomings that I described above and do not feel any particular discomfort. In general, the device is super and my rating is of course 5 points out of 5.

There were questions about a combined slot or not. So, for those who don’t know, the memory card is inserted just above the first SIM card, i.e. above the first SIM card and separately the second SIM card.

    1. Assembly without any complaints, good quality. No creaks or backlashes were noticed, everything fits tightly, there are no cracks.
    2. Regarding work: during the entire period of use, there was not a single freeze or unexpected reboot, the system runs smoothly, without brakes, the animations are also smooth and pleasing to the eye, in general I would like to note that Android L has come a long way from Android 4.x.x ( There used to be two tablets from Asus on Android 4.x.x). I should note that I don’t play games on my smartphone, but everything I need to use, social networks, office, maps, Internet applications - all this works without any brakes.
    To summarize, the hardware is quite tolerable, enough for a couple of years of use.
    3. Screen color rendition is good, but no more; compared to the NL820, Asus loses a little. But in the bright sun everything is readable, without any problems. Brightness settings: manual and automatic, there are color temperature presets: cold/neutral/warm. 5 inches is enough, the pixel density is good, no graininess was noticed. Gorilla Glass 4 costs, but I bought the protective glass for 180 rubles. and a book case for 300 rubles.
    4. Removable battery 2400 mAh. Its battery life lasts for a couple of days, with average use and average brightness (someone wrote that it lasts for 3-4 days with active use: tell me in more detail, I want that too). If you just use it without the Internet, but just as a dialer/SMS, it will last for 3 days or more.
    5. Communications everything is excellent here too, GPS satellites connect, 4G works, 2 SIM cards (I only use one slot, the second is unnecessary). The microphone is good, the speaker too, I can hear everyone, everyone can hear me.
    6. Memory RAM 2 GB, about a gigabyte free, 16 GB of its own, about 10 GB free, there is an expansion slot, there is a 16 GB class 10 card, I don’t experience any problems, applications are installed both on the card and in the memory.
    7. Camera I rarely take photographs, I can’t say anything objective here, read the characteristics, laser focus, a bunch of settings, I practically don’t use this.
    Here is actually a barrel of honey for
Flaws
    Still, there are, but they are not critical and relate mainly to ergonomics, most likely everyone has their own experience of use, some will agree with me, others will not.
    1. The body is easily soiled. Although it is covered with a pleasant SoftTouch layer, it is very easily soiled, fingerprints remain, and it begs the purchase of a case. Regarding the screen, the same thing, there is no oleophobic coating, it gets dirty with fingerprints, you have to think about purchasing glass or film. The proprietary concentric circles at the bottom under the touch navigation keys also become clogged with dust and dirt during operation and have to be cleaned special means for screens.
    2. Sound keys on the back for my taste, the solution is quite controversial, when you talk, it’s convenient, when you watch a video with the phone in a horizontal position, it’s not convenient. If they had done them classically on the side, it would have been better (again, in my opinion).
    3. Power off/lock key on top 50/50, to lock there is a double tap on the screen, which is convenient, but I turn the phone on/off very rarely, so it’s normal.
    4. The navigation keys are physical and are not backlit, but they do have vibration. At first it took a little getting used to in the dark, but the light comes from the screen, so you won’t get confused with 3 keys.

    That's all the shortcomings/nit-picking. There were no problems or glitches that directly affected the operation of the smartphone itself.

Experience using this smartphone since March 26, 2016. Replaced my outdated one Nokia Lumia 820 (by the way, also purchased from Citylink on July 26, 2013). The first thing I would like to note is that the price/quality/filling ratio is optimal. I bought it for 11,700 rubles. (NL820 in 2013 for 15,000 rubles) Compared to WP10, LolliPop was stupefied due to the abundance of settings and customization of the smartphone; in Windows Mobile they are still rather meager (I speak as a WP10 user). Quite quickly I got used to this abundance, this is what was so lacking before.

As a result, I use inexpensive (read budget), quality smartphone, on a modern OS (taking into account the rate of obsolescence of flagships and mid-rangers both in hardware and software, I don’t see the point of paying 40,000-60,000 rubles for a smart device, which will still be outdated, if not in 2, but definitely in 3 years).
That's all, I hope this smart will serve faithfully for many more years.

    2. quite powerful, although the processor and video are old
    3. The battery lasts about 24 hours
    4. The design is solid (I took the white version) appearance I would like to give 15-17 thousand.
    5. 2 gigs of RAM (about 500-600 MB is consumed by Asus garbage)
    6. developers of. They promised that there will be an update to Android 6.0

Flaws
    Many people write that there will be a lot of defects. For me, Citylink and marriage don’t go together, well, really, how much can you? For the sake of decency, they could send me at least 1 marriage, well, it’s very suspicious...)

1. I’ve never tried 4g, I even bought a SIM card separately, when I connected it my jaw almost dropped and I wondered why I need a computer now?) YouTube 720 loads on my phone, pages open in the browser much faster than on a computer, It's a shame.
2. The processor and video in the phone are not that top-end, I would call it below average, but by some miracle it plays asphalt 8, hearthstone fine, I like to play games and the first thing I did was install hundreds of them, well, absolutely no lags were detected I confidently give this phone “gaming” status.
It is impossible to force the phone to lag out of charge. If you are not taking it for games, then forget about any lags or freezes, by definition they cannot exist here.
3. If you only play hearthstone with 3g (since 4g is not really needed there), then I’ll say for sure, I was on pairs and lost all 4 pairs with breaks of about 20 minutes in total, it turns out that it takes 4 hours 40 minutes to charge dropped from 91% to 30% with backlighting at about 25%. The remaining 30 percent went to the Internet with 4g turned on. That is, the charge was enough for me for the whole full day, I didn’t have to give up the backlight, 25-30% brightness is enough for me. If you use it only for the Internet, as I tried, then it will definitely be enough for 1.5 days, with a backlight of 25-30%.
4. Absolutely no complaints about the appearance, everything is done neatly and beautifully, no complaints. Regarding the lack of illumination of the lower buttons and the rear swing, these points did not cause any discomfort for me, I immediately got used to it.
5. 2 gigs are still unnecessary, fill them to the maximum for real use Everyday life It won't work, but you have to try :)
I was deciding between Honor 4c and this one, I still advise you to take this one, well, there are too many pros, and you also need to look for the cons.
I think that it should cost more and soon Asus will understand this, so hurry up)

    It’s difficult to talk about the advantages of this device as such; I didn’t find them for myself. No, this does not mean that the device is bad, on the contrary, I was quite pleased with it. The only positive thing I would say is that Asus, in this price segment, is trying to create a more or less glitch-free and easy-to-use device, as well as the lack of headphones and recording of phone calls.
Flaws
    I'll nitpick:
    - The volume button is located on the back of the phone. I understand that in pursuit of buyers, designers are trying to uniqueize the product, I don’t know how successful they were, I didn’t like this option, especially when you have to adjust the volume by installing the phone in a car holder.
    - the home\back\settings touch keys are not backlit, it’s difficult to touch with your finger in the dark
    - the ON key is placed exactly in the middle of the end and next to the hole for headphones, it is not comfortable to rest your finger when turning the screen on/off
    - there are no stereo speakers (bottom, on the back side), and the volume is rather weak in the car when turned on speakerphone on the phone you will have to lean forward to hear the interlocutor and ask him to speak louder.
    - camera, what can I say, it's a shitty camera. With manual tweaks you can make it work faster.
    - the performance of the Android OS interface again, we can’t say that it’s slow, but it’s right on the edge, which affects the perception of the device as fast. Perhaps it’s not even the hardware, but the OS tweaks from the manufacturer
    - as usual, a bunch of uninstallable shitty software from the manufacturer, which in principle is not such a problem and can be solved, but nevertheless it is annoying from phone to phone
    - screen backlight in the sun it is almost invisible at maximum brightness, in the dark a couple of three steps of minimum backlight are not enough so as not to hurt the eyes
    - give me a link to the case\bumper\film? no, probably not yet

Damn, it's been a long time since I picked up a mid-range device. Either I’m lucky, or I deliberately choose extremes for myself, but I tested smartphones that were either as close as possible to flagships, or budget ones that had holes in my pockets. Therefore, I looked with interest at the ASUS Zenfone 2 Laser - what is it, why is it called that and what does it come with.

The reason for my dislike for the middle class is that most models in this segment are equipped with a couple of luxury features, but this comes at the expense of other features, and sometimes even leads to the appearance of budget components in the filling. Laser almost crosses the line of my dislike, but also charms at the same time. Now I’ll explain why exactly.

Zenfone 2 Laser is a camera phone and also a stylish accessory. And also - a smart and software-rich device. It looks lovely, with subtle concentric circles as a design element. It feels good on your fingers, your eyes notice the play of light, and the surface doesn’t get dirty. If we compare the dimensions of the smartphone with my G2, the Laser turns out to be a couple of millimeters larger, and this despite the fact that its screen diagonal is 0.2 inches smaller. Fluctuations in size, as I understand it, are associated with the presence of touch keys at the bottom of the display (for me they are called by swiping).

On the back, the Laser boasts an 8-megapixel camera, a flash and a laser focusing unit, and together with the volume swing, all four units form a kind of “T” shape. The swing, by the way, is very close to me, since at one time it became the final reason to buy the D802. Unfortunately, the power button was not on it, but on top, next to the mini-jack.

Now - by ASUS specifications Zenfone 2 Laser. And they are like this:

  • Full name: ASUS Zenfone 2 Laser ZE500KL

  • Dimensions (mm): 143.7 x 71.5 x 3.5

  • Front camera: 5 megapixels, PixelMaster, wide-angle lens

As you can see, the insides of the smartphone are not excellent. The battery is sufficient for operation, the screen is not Full-HD, although it is IPS, the diagonal is good, there is an oleophobic coating, and Gorilla Glass 4. Internal memory catastrophically small (out of 8 gigabytes is free, just don’t rust, 3 with a tail), but that’s why the MicroSD slot exists... Communication is at the level - Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, 3G/4G, Dual Stand mode, but there is no NFC. The 2 GB RAM is pleasing, there’s nothing to say here. The Internet speed is also at the same level (I compare it with the LG G2, again).

Back in my last ASUS test I didn’t really manage to use the proprietary capabilities of ZenUI... Oh, yes, I forgot to warn you, Laser has this software shell. Well, this time I played to the fullest, and was as satisfied as an elephant in a sea of peanuts. Like G2, the hero of the article can wake up with a double tap, but thanks to ZenMotion you can draw different symbols on the locked screen. And the phone will respond to them.

I drew “C” and the camera opened. I drew five more letters and five more applications opened. This whole thing is customizable, and applies not only to standard programs, but also on loaded ones. By the way, this feature works surprisingly instantly; the same camera is ready for use in less than a second. I admit, I have never seen such speed even in Formula 1. And even more so, my G2 cannot boast of it.

This fact surprised me very, very much, and I can only praise the optimization of ZenUI. The Laser's hardware is rather weak. Due to the lower resolution in games, there is an increase in performance (I, for example, was surprised that Modern Combat 5 ran without any special freezes), but this is largely due to optimization, and partly visual effects disappeared somewhere. In games like Angry Birds 2, the action is slightly slower.

From a technical point of view, it’s not entirely correct to compare the Laser with the G2, but since I’m already looking for a replacement for my old flagship, I’ll do it anyway. If we talk about the pure filling and price range, then the closest relative of the D802 in terms of internals, which is still produced - Sony Xperia Z1 costs about 20 thousand rubles. Laser costs 11 thousand rubles, and predictably shows lower results.

But the camera is quite good. Not only does the laser autofocus really focus in a split second, but the automatic mode setting also allows you to eat! Well, like automatic... If it’s dark, the smartphone will offer to turn on low-light mode; if the photo turns out to be dim or too bright, the automatic HDR setting will carry out post-processing. The system is simplified, but it works with a bang, due to which there is no need to install additional programs. Additional modes, such as creating GIF animation, are also nice - you can play with the camera for a long time and productively.

The only thing I really didn’t like about the ASUS Zenfone 2 Laser was the insignificant amount of built-in memory. We were slightly disappointed by the insides, we were not pleased by the absence of the usual gallery, and also music player- Play Music doesn't count. Fortunately, I realized in time what the hero of the article was. This is a stylish camera phone, youthful and attractive in design. I won’t judge a fish by its ability to draw graffiti, so I recommend this little miracle to all those who like to take pictures and show off. And you can also play 2Dots - stylish and exciting, after all.
