Secure mobile phones. Which smartphones are the most reliable, safe and convenient?

Capable of performing many more tasks than a few years ago Cell phones. However, a significantly expanded range of opportunities also means the emergence of new risks.

Because now we use our phones for more tasks (from communication in in social networks to online shopping, banking and web browsing), we all need to take reasonable precautions to protect our phones and our information from malicious attacks.

How to make using your smartphone safer

  • Lock your phone
Make sure your screen lock is turned on to reduce the risk of your phone falling into your hands.
  • Use encryption to protect information that is important to you
Check if your phone has a data encryption feature and make sure it is in use. If your phone is stolen, computer criminals will not be able to access the personal information stored on your phone if that information is encrypted.
  • Monitor the behavior of applications on your phone
Make sure that access to resources on your phone is granted with your permission when prompted by the application. This is especially important for Android smartphones.
  • Protect your phone and your information
Many users who would not even consider using a laptop, PC or Mac without an antivirus software, forget that modern smartphones are powerful computers, and they are exposed to the same danger. Make sure all devices are using a reputable antivirus program, and antivirus databases data is regularly updated.
  • Be aware of the dangers of gaining root access through jailbreaking
Although it is tempting to become root in order to gain access to special applications and services, this can significantly reduce its security. To keep your phone and your data safe, do not try to root or jailbreak your phone.
  • Turn off Bluetooth whenever possible
If the Bluetooth connection is not in use, it is best to turn it off. This way you can make your phone less vulnerable to attack and reduce battery consumption.
  • When choosing an antivirus for your smartphone, make sure that it has protection in case of theft.
Some smartphone security products include a wide range of anti-theft features that give the owner remote access to a lost or stolen smartphone so it can be locked, located, and erased.

The computer has long become a reliable human companion. With its help, an ordinary person can gain access to a huge database of information and media files, simplify their work, while professionals and scientists can quickly and efficiently carry out calculations and modeling. Ten years ago, compact computers - smartphones - came to the masses. By the end of 2017, they appeared in almost every pocket. And it just so happens that the average lifespan modern phone- a year and a half, after which the once ideal device is sent to the back drawer.

But many people don't intend to change devices that often. In addition, the performance of smartphones is quite enough for a couple of years. The only problem remains the quality of the devices - many models, after a few months of use, begin to “crumble”: the screen turns yellow, the battery capacity is lost, the case is scratched. But there are also real long-livers who will delight the user for several years.

IN this review you will find, in our opinion, some of the best phones in terms of quality and reliability. The following mobile phone (smartphone) indicators are important to us:

  1. Affordable price. A phone should not cost too much, because a high price is not always an indicator of quality. And the fact that the device should be affordable is extremely important.
  2. Lack of large quantities negative reviews on reliability of operation, warranty claims, poor assembly.
  3. Specifications. The rating includes phones that can compete in their technical characteristics with other models in the same price segment.

3 Apple iPhone 6S 32GB

Reliable performance operating system
Country: USA
Average price: 21,900 rub.
Rating (2019): 4.7

This is the most budget smartphone on iOS, which has not lost its relevance in 2019. The model is definitely not suitable for gamers and those who are demanding on hardware, but it will appeal to those who use a smartphone for such daily tasks: surfing the Internet, calls, correspondence in instant messengers, light gaming, watching videos.

The model boasts a smooth interface, well-optimized software, and no freezes or lags. And it's also compact. This best smartphone for users who are not ready to put up with the fashion for elongated 6-inch shovels. NFC is in place, the matrix is chic, the body is durable - made of aluminum, there is a fingerprint scanner. A serious drawback that cannot be mitigated is the short time battery life. In the best-case scenario, the battery produces daylight hours. We recommend purchasing a power bank together with your iPhone.

Budget smartphone of Japanese quality. The new product runs on stable Android 8.0. Inside there is an equally stable processor from Mediatek Helio P22. This is an eight-core system, which, coupled with 3 GB of RAM, shows praiseworthy performance results.

One of the most popular smartphones from Apple, which cannot be called inexpensive. At one time, the G8 took first place in performance tests, but in 2019 it is simply an excellent, powerful gadget with fast response and trouble-free operation.

In the reviews, some users admit that after several falls, including with the screen facing down, the iPhone still works just fine, and not a single crack has appeared on the case or display. iOS, the operating system of Apple phones, is famous for its security and reliability. Also, the manufacturer always supports its information product and regularly releases updates with performance improvements. The smartphone is protected from viruses that often infect Android devices. Optimization of work at a high level - despite the fact that the installed processor is not the most powerful, it demonstrates top-end performance and can handle even heavy games and programs. iPhone 8 is one of the most reliable and secure phones.

2 OnePlus 6T 8/128GB

Best in speed and stability
Country: China

A relatively inexpensive modification of the 2019 flagship from Samsung. This means that you can take your smartphone into the shower and swim with it in the pool - it will endure everything.

Despite the fact that the new product only recently went on sale, users have already written their first impressions of use in reviews. Some people complain about slight software glitches, but this is the fault of the new Android 9. Otherwise, sheer delight and emphasis on its quality and reliability. Information for left-handers – the fingerprint scanner is located on the right side and is designed for the user to hold the device in his right hand.

The highest quality premium smartphones

Which phone will remain relevant greatest number time? Of course, top devices. Their filling allows you not to remember about slowdowns for at least 2 years, and a comfortable speed will be ensured even longer. In this category, we tried to select for you the highest quality premium smartphones, so that the reason for changing it would be the user’s own desire, and not technical problems.

3 Samsung Galaxy S8

The most proven premium smartphone
Country: South Korea
Average price: 34,900 rub.
Rating (2019): 4.8

The third place in the ranking of the highest quality premium smartphones is occupied by the Galaxy S8. The model was presented at the beginning of 2017. While on the shelf, all possible shortcomings were identified, the firmware was updated several times, and now we have a very high-quality phone with a minimal percentage of defects and high reliability. And yes, you can rest assured – Samsung batteries will no longer explode!

In terms of filling, we have a typical 2017 flagship. Inside, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 is installed paired with 4 GB of RAM - the figures are not record-breaking, but for the vast majority of users this combination will be enough for several years of trouble-free operation. In addition to the filling, the chic frameless 5.8-inch display attracts attention. The diagonal is large, but due to minimal horizontal and completely absent vertical frames (the display extends onto the side edges), the dimensions of the device remain relatively compact. The Galaxy S8 is also worth praising for having one of the best cameras on the market, dust and moisture protection, and fast wireless charging. The only complaint about the phone is that the fingerprint scanner is not very well located, which is why many users turn it off.

2 Apple iPhone Xs Max 256GB

The most sophisticated software
Country: USA
Average price: 87,490 rub.
Rating (2019): 4.8

Smartphone on latest iOS 12, filled with innovative technologies and software goodies for convenience. The model pleases with a huge 6.5-inch display and its high resolution – 2688x1242. In reviews, it is difficult for users to find objective shortcomings of the model - this is one of the highest quality, reliable and powerful smartphones in 2019.

The main caveat is that not all developers have adapted their applications to the increased screen resolution. This is a matter of time, and this fact does not affect the functionality, but only the aesthetics - the program interface has become a little larger. The battery lasts a full day - for iPhones this is really a lot. The operating system is as convenient as possible: swipes speed up the process and increase the convenience of one-handed operation, presentation modes in the photo album allow you to create photo masterpieces and well-designed collections in a couple of clicks. Easy payment process via NFC, support wireless charging and amazing performance - all included in the price of the Xs Max.

1 Apple iPhone 8 Plus 256GB

Largest built-in storage capacity (256GB)
A country: USA (manufactured in China)
Average price: 59,689 rub.
Rating (2019): 4.7

The rating opens with the iPhone 8, introduced in the fall of 2017. The smartphone received a large number of innovations, among which the most noticeable was the change in the body material - from now on it is glass. But don’t think that the smartphone has become more fragile. On the contrary, judging by many “crash tests”, resistance to falls and scratches has increased significantly. If dropped from a height of human height, a smartphone can only get away with a couple of scratches on the metal frame. This solution also made it possible to install a wireless charging module.

The filling has also changed. The once brand new Apple A11 Bionic is installed inside, the performance of which is not even worth talking about - it will be enough for years to come. The communication modules are the latest - Bluetooth 5.0, which supports connection with several devices at once, LTE-A and other delights modern world. The dust and moisture protection, which first appeared in the iPhone 7, remains in place - you don’t have to worry even while swimming with your smartphone. Otherwise, we have before us the already familiar “seven”, all of whose problems have long been studied and corrected.

The most reliable smartphones, time-tested

3 ASUS Zenfone Max Pro (M2) ZB631KL 4/64GB

Best price
Country: Taiwan
Average price: 16910 rub.
Rating (2019): 4.6

Beautiful, fast and harmonious smartphone. Inexpensive and therefore extremely interesting. The model has not gained much popularity, and this is strange: the software is optimized, there are no bugs, the hardware is great, photography skills are not bad, the screen is excellent, battery life is at a sufficient level (5000 mAh battery). NFC and others wireless interfaces on the spot. The manufacturer does not forget about his brainchild - he regularly updates the software.

The case is durable, but cannot resist scratches - without a case, you will quickly “renew” the delicate coating of the back panel. The peculiarity of the model is that it is based on pure Android. This means that you will not find alien programs in the menu, and in the settings - atypical sliders and checkboxes. For lovers of minimalism and those who are looking for something high-quality and reliable for reasonable money, this is - the best option. You'll just have to come to terms with micro USB port and the susceptibility of the case to scratches.

2 Samsung Galaxy S9 64GB

The best ratio of price and quality
Country: South Korea
Average price: 44,300 rub.
Rating (2019): 4.7

An excellent flagship of 2018, which after more than a year of operation has not revealed its hidden shortcomings. One of the most optimized, it shows top results in synthetic tests and is not prone to slowdowns and bugs. Reviews are full of praise for the gorgeous screen, performance, photo capabilities, sound, and water resistance.

There are a small number of owners who complain about loss of communication. A pattern emerged - all users used both SIM cards with the checkbox turned on next to the line “Dual SIM in active mode.” The problem appeared on a few models, so even taking into account this significant drawback, the phone deserves the title of one of the highest quality. One more thing - don't expect amazing battery life from the S9. The battery is the weak point of the model. With moderate active use, the battery will last a day, and if you do not let go of the gadget, make sure that there is a charged power bank or outlet nearby.

1 OnePlus 5T 128GB

Time-tested reliability
Country: China
Average price: 29,900 rub.
Rating (2019): 4.8

A smartphone that is very loved by users from all over the world. The reason for universal adoration lies not only in the inexpensive price at powerful characteristics, but also to detailed development of the software, and work without glitches and slowdowns. The model runs on Android 7.1, which is improved with a proprietary shell from 1+. The phone looks great even by the standards of 2019 - thin frames, no unibrow, a large diagonal of 6 inches, a dual main camera and stylish colors. There is a 3.5 mm minijack.

In reviews, 5T owners reveal their cards: over a long period of operation, they did not identify any problems with the software. The device does not lag or slow down. The only thing they complain about is the slippery body and lack of moisture protection. But it's beautiful here AMOLED display, good autonomy and a rich supply package - the box contains a case, a power adapter with support for fast charging, and a factory-made film for the screen. This is the best of the highest quality phones that are time-tested and still relevant.

Everything you wanted to know about the security of the most popular mobile operating system

I used iPhones for six years, but in September I bought an Android smartphone.

Alexander Marfitsin

in former years - editor of "Makradar"

Friends warned that Android is unsafe: they say, there are viruses in every application, and danger awaits where you don’t expect it. I decided to find out if this was true and assembled a team of experts:

  • Denis Lesnik, developer of Tinkoff Bank,
  • Dmitry Peterson, head of Mobile Simbirsoft,
  • Victoria Nosova, Security Director, Check Point Software Technologies,
  • Evgeniy Katella, head of the Android development department at Rambler,
  • Artyom Baranov, leading virus analyst at Eset Russia.

Here's what I learned from them.

Is Android really dangerous?

Android is less secure than iOS. This operating system allows you to install applications from third-party stores, firmware updates are not released by all manufacturers, and users have direct access to file system.

But Android has many advantages. Firstly, applications work in the so-called “sandbox” - a special virtual space where the program runs separately and the operating system separately. Secondly, Android's security system is based on access rights.

If you follow security rules and watch what you let into your phone, an Android phone is no less secure than an iPhone.

What is the most insecure Android phone right now?

The most dangerous devices are smartphones with older versions of Android. Google does not release security updates for Android older than version 4.4.4. The fifth and sixth versions have enhanced security settings.

To see what version of Android your smartphone is running on, go to → “Settings” → “About phone” → “Android version”:

The most important thing is that your smartphone receives frequent updates. Most Android smartphones are rarely updated. The exception is the devices that Google produces: “Nexuses” and “Pixels”. There are also special smartphone models with an emphasis on protecting user data. For example, the Blackberry line of Android smartphones: Priv, DTEK50, DTEK60. Samsung and HTC update frequently, but older models at some point stop receiving updates.

Cheap ones are also at risk Chinese smartphones- as a rule, they are tied to their own application store - an analogue of Google Play, which is not so secure. Adware and spyware are often installed on such smartphones.

It is dangerous to use smartphones purchased second-hand if you have not reset their firmware and deleted all the legacy of the previous owner. If you bought the phone secondhand, restore it factory firmware. If you cannot do this yourself, contact service center, they will do it there in 15 minutes.

To reset the settings, go to the “Restore and reset” item of your smartphone’s settings:

When purchasing a smartphone by hand, wash it down to its base.

What is the most common reason why phones are hacked?

Due to user carelessness. It can download malware by opening a link in a dubious email, following links from spam and strange messages from instant messengers, or trying to gain access to a new application and install it from dubious sources.

Social engineering- the easiest way to attack a smartphone. This is a method of attack in which a person himself gives his data to scammers: for example, he reports the card number supposedly to bank employees; or enters the login and password for a social network in a dubious application. If you install applications not from Google Play, enter data from social networks and banking applications on unfamiliar sites, then Android will not save you, no matter how secure it is.

The letter is dubious because we did not expect any payments, and the link leads to a strange website

Disable the “Allow installation of applications from unknown sources” option in the security settings:

Now applications can only be installed from the official store

When installing an application, check what data it asks for. For example, if a flashlight needs access to phone calls or messages, this is a reason to be wary, because the flashlight only needs a flash to work. You can change permissions in your smartphone application settings:

The flashlight needs access to the camera to turn on the flash. But to your contacts - no need

And, of course, do not tell anyone your personal data and SMS codes. Beware of universal messengers, applications like “VK Music” or “Who was on your page”. Any unofficial applications who ask for your personal information may use it against you.

Do you need an antivirus on your phone?

Antiviruses protect against certain threats - they scan installed applications and flash cards. But a phone out of the box with the latest version of Android does not need an antivirus - in this case, the antivirus will simply consume the phone's resources. If you have an old phone and it does not receive updates, then you should install an antivirus.

Android limits the capabilities of applications, so most modern antiviruses are useless. If you install applications only from Google Play, then the antivirus will most likely not bring any tangible benefit: it will always tell you that no threats have been detected.

The phone constantly prompts to update. What to do?

Smartphone firmware updates fix critical security vulnerabilities. Try to use the latest firmware version. Make sure that it is the phone that offers the update, and not third party program. If everything is fine, then update.

But before installing new firmware, make sure it works fine. Read reviews on the Internet from users who have already upgraded. It often happens that an update eliminates one old problem and create three new ones.

Before upgrading, save all important data - if something goes wrong, you can restore the information. Android has most likely already made a backup copy of your contacts, but it is better to save photos separately.

How to save data?

In your smartphone settings there is a “Backup and Reset” item. Check if the “Data backup” toggle switch is turned on. This is a backup built into Android - it saves backups application data, Wi-Fi passwords, Chrome bookmarks.

Contacts from your address book and Google mail, events in Google Calendar, and purchases in Google Play are saved automatically if account synchronization is enabled. This can be checked in the account settings of your smartphone.

IN latest versions Android for smartphones of the “Pixel” line is complete data backup in Google Drive. But these models are not officially sold in Russia yet.

What absolutely should not be done on the Internet from a mobile phone or tablet?

Do not install applications not from Google Play or additional add-ons from dubious sites. Be careful about your data accounts social networks and banking applications - make sure that the site or application is truly official and the connection is secure.

Often, attackers fake banking websites, and users do not notice the trick.

To make sure your connection to the site is secure, look for the padlock icon to the left of address bar Chroma:

The connection is secure

Be careful on porn sites, sites with free games and TV series, torrent sites, online casinos. They may ask you to install an update, clean your phone, extend battery life, or something else promising. Most often, Trojans, viruses or botnet agents will be hidden behind all these miracle programs. If you install something, do it only from the official Google Play store.

Do not buy anything or conduct important correspondence from your smartphone if you are using public Wi-Fi that is not password-protected. Don't root your phone unless absolutely necessary.

What is phone rooting? What is it for?

Android runs on the Linux operating system. It has a root user who has access to all system objects. This is where the word “rooting” came from.

Rooting gives programs access to system files and settings. For example, using rooting you can control processor power or take a complete digital copy of your smartphone with all applications, settings and user data. Experienced guys do rooting to strip everything down to the bare metal unnecessary programs, overclock the phone as much as possible, open it in hidden functions or install alternative firmware. It sounds tempting, but rooting is dangerous.

An inexperienced user, due to rooting, can damage the firmware so that the smartphone will no longer work. A rooted phone loses its warranty and is not updated by the manufacturer. To root, you must have a very good reason and a reliable geek on hand.

If a malicious application gets onto a rooted phone, you will have to completely reflash the phone to remove it. A malicious application with root access will be able to send messages from your phone to short numbers and use banking programs without your knowledge.

Remember

  1. Buy smartphones with the latest version of Android - preferably 6.0 and higher. If you purchase Chinese smartphones, pay attention to the built-in application store. If this is an analogue of Google Play, and not Google Play itself, then downloading programs and games is dangerous.
  2. If your smartphone's firmware has not been updated for a long time, install an antivirus. If the manufacturer frequently releases updates for the device, then you don’t have to install an antivirus.
  3. Install applications only from Google Play. In the settings, disable downloading programs from other sources. Keep track of what information applications request, do not forget to check them in the settings.
  4. When paying for purchases from a smartphone, make sure that you are on the official website of the bank or payment system. Check that the connection is secure.
  5. Rooting opens access to the system settings of the smartphone third party applications. It also voids your manufacturer's warranty. Don't root.
  6. Check if your Google account is synchronized and if the built-in backup works in the smartphone settings. To save photos and videos, use Google Photos.

The world knows many attempts to create a secure smartphone. This includes Blackphone with the function of encrypting all communications, and the dubious BlackBerry Priv, and even GATCA Elite, the creators of which did not invent anything at all and passed it off as exclusive standard Android features. Quite recently, Tor developers announced the creation of a working prototype of a secure smartphone, and such news definitely cannot be ignored.

“A protected smartphone from the developers of anonymizing software” sounds strange, doesn’t it? But don't rush to conclusions. Unlike the BlackBerry Priv, the “Tor smartphone” is based on open software from several companies and independent developers; the smartphone itself is a Nexus 6P. They are not even going to sell it, but instead supply special firmware.

The firmware, of course, is based on Android, but not on the Android that you are used to seeing in your smartphone, but on its modification called CopperheadOS. It was created by security specialists from the Canadian company Copperhead. In general, they are not known for anything else, but judging by the functions that are already implemented in the firmware, these guys clearly know what they are doing.
