Bluetooth headset samsung gear circle reviews. Review of the Samsung Gear Circle SM-R130 wireless Bluetooth headset

Recently, the fashion for wireless headsets, ala a sports and fashion accessory, has been gaining momentum. This is not to say that this is a new category of devices, but more and more famous companies have recently begun to produce their own variations on the theme. Samsung has this Gear Circle, introduced in the fall of 2014, which we will now begin reviewing.

Equipment

The headset is sold as a separate, independent accessory. It is not included with any of the mobile devices. In fact, not all users need the Hands-Free function and listening to music via Bluetooth, so few are willing to pay extra when buying a smartphone.

The Samsung Gear Circle box is quite impressive in size. Even the company's smartphones are supplied in packages that are more modest in size.

There is also thick cardboard with beautiful and high-quality printing, and under the lid there is a very interesting package.

The headphones are neatly placed on the first tier, and under them there are two additional pairs of replaceable ear pads of different sizes and a power supply (5V, 0.7A). There are also, at first glance, incomprehensible three plastic combs in sizes S, M and, of course, L. What they are and why they are needed is not clear at first. Maybe these are some special stands for storing headphones on them, or maybe they are used to measure the thickness of the neck. It's actually simple. I will explain in the next section.

Design and usability

The Gear Circle can be worn in two ways. I put it around my neck, inserted the headphones, took them out of my ears if necessary and, in principle, that’s all. Not very reliable, but the simplest option.

In this case, it is impossible to engage in any sports, except perhaps chess.

Headphones constantly fall out of the ear canals, and the headset slides onto your back or shoulders and can easily fall.

The second way is to use these same headbands. First you need to choose the one that suits your neck circumference. In my case, it was a comb under the letter M. Each of them has a special recess in the middle, where you need to insert the main part of the headset body until it clicks.

Next, this entire structure is put on the neck and you can move out. Under no circumstances will the headset fall to the ground, even with strong head tilts. The entire structure is held in place by the plastic ends of the rim. However, when actively playing sports, listening to music still won’t work. At least in my case, the headphones always fell out of my ears. Selecting suitable ear pads did not improve the situation.

During a simple walk or a relatively quiet pastime, the accessory does not cause any discomfort. Over time, you even forget about it.

Samsung thought of another very convenient feature. You don't have to take the headset off every time you stop listening to music. The headphones do not hang around your neck just like that, because at the slightest contact with each other they are attracted and independently secured in the form of a sort of technological necklace around the neck. It’s not for nothing that the gadget is called Gear Circle (from the English “circle”).

Accordingly, when magnetization of the “ears” occurs, the music itself stops and can be started again by pressing a special key. Again, a very convenient idea.

When a call comes in, just disconnect the speakers from each other and insert them into your ears. The answer will happen automatically. When a call arrives during playback, one single physical key is already responsible for receiving. Let's dwell a little on the last one.

A single press pauses playback or starts from where it stopped. Double clicking on the button goes to the next track. There is no going back. A long press will activate the search function for available Bluetooth devices within range. By the way, music is easily broadcast at a distance of 10 meters. If any obstacles appear in the path of the radio wave in the form of walls or something similar, no one promises anything.

In any position, the quality of speech transmission does not suffer and remains at a quite comfortable level for the subscriber at the other end of the line.

Next to the microphone there is an LED indicator for various events: a red light indicates a lack of charging, the power supply is in progress, or the gadget is turned off, and a blue light indicates when it is turned on or an incoming call.

On the reverse side there is the same multifunction key and a small touch pad, which is responsible for the music volume. I ran my finger along it towards the ear - the volume increased, ran it towards the eyes - it decreased. The sensitivity of the sensor is quite good. The touchpad is indicated by a special sticker, which during my use came off and was safely lost. However, there is still a sensitive area there, you will have to take my word for it.

Volume control occurs regardless of the level on the translator device. In other words, a smartphone has its own volume, and the Samsung Gear Circle has its own.

The left side of the headset is poorer in various elements. There is only a lever to turn the device on and off.

It’s nice that the manufacturer has equipped the headset with a vibration motor function. It is located at the back of the gadget and vibrates slightly, signaling various events and notifications.

Hidden nearby under a rubber plug is a MicroUSB port for connecting a charger. By the way, the gadget as a whole is afraid of immersion in water, but some protection from moisture is still present (P2i standard). This means exposure to rain, short-term exposure to water, etc.

The cable in the accessory is soft and most likely soiled. Although during my two-week operation it did not become unusable.

Audio frequency specifications could not be found. For some reason, the company did not present them publicly, so we will determine the sound quality from a subjective point of view.

Functionality

NFC connections are not provided here, but pairing of devices is already easy and fast via Bluetooth. The successful establishment of contact will be indicated by a green LED indicator.

By the way, the accessory can be connected to two devices simultaneously. Sparring occurs in stages for each device separately.

As I said earlier, the headset is capable of playing music in stereo mode from any compatible sound source (via Bluetooth), working as a regular wireless headset for conversations, and something else.

Additional functionality is available when you install the Samsung Gear Manager application on your smartphone. However, it is only compatible with devices of the same name and with Android 4.2.2 OS and at least one gigabyte of RAM.

Owners of all of the above have access to features such as voice notifications, SoundAlive and S Voice. In general, you can only experience all the delights of functionality if you have a smartphone from the Korean electronics giant.

Sound quality

I already mentioned above that Gear Circle supports the apt-X codec. I'll tell you a little more about this.

Most devices that support the Bluetooth A2DP profile transmit the signal using the SBC codec, which, of course, is supported by our headset. However, this is yesterday's century, while apt-X is the light of today. Using the latter, music is transmitted, so to speak, without loss and with more advanced content compression technologies. Everything looks great and promising, but the catch is that your audio source must also support this technology, otherwise the headset will not be able to realize its potential. If your smartphone does not support apt-X, then the signal will be transmitted to the Gear Circle only using the SBC codec, which, of course, will slightly degrade the playback quality. In this case, one of the advantages of purchasing an accessory disappears.

And now directly about the quality. Overall, it will more than satisfy the undemanding ear.

The accessory will definitely outshine your standard headset from the kit, no matter whose brand it is.

A more experienced user is unlikely to discover anything new. Personally, I was slightly disappointed by the lack of deep and confident bass. High and mid frequencies are revealed well, but the low ones are somehow meager.

As for the volume, it grabs it by the eyes. If you prefer the maximum level on Gear Circle, then most likely you need to see a doctor. 70-80 percent is quite sufficient for comfortable listening to audio content anytime, anywhere.

Sound insulation is not amazing. It is comparable to any headphones of this in-ear type.

At the same time, owners of Samsung smartphones or tablets will be able to experience the sound of the accessory using proprietary sound filters, try playing with the equalizer settings, and so on.

Battery life

On the official website, the specifications list the capacity of the built-in battery as 180 mAh. However, another number is printed on the back surface of the gadget - 150 mAh. It is not possible to find out what the actual capacity of the battery is.

The company claims that their gadget is capable of continuously playing music for 9 hours, maintaining a conversation/call for up to 11 hours and up to 300 hours in standby mode.

Real use has shown that what the manufacturer claims is quite true. If you listen to music for about two hours a day, the headset will last for 3-4 days. Answering calls and receiving various notifications will, of course, reduce the result of autonomy.

Bottom line

You can find various color variations on sale. There are black, white (like ours) and blue colors.

The official price of Samsung Gear Circle is set at 5990 rubles. You can try to look for cheaper options. Most likely, success awaits you.

Let's summarize the sound. The gadget is definitely not suitable for seasoned audiophiles. There are no miracles in the world, at least for this price. However, the sound quality here is at a very decent level, both among wired analogues and among Bluetooth accessories. Headphones are also popular for their functionality and some loyalty to the brand. Owners of Samsung smartphones will be able to get additional functionality such as voice notifications and proprietary sound enhancements.

Opinion of our sound expert Nikita Grishachev:

Among the Bluetooth smartphone solutions available on the market, Samsung Circle stands out among its competitors. At least by its design.

Finally, the company has found the right way to the hearts of people who are skeptical about Samsung. Finished is perhaps the best word to describe the device. Indeed, from a design perspective, it is difficult to come up with any feature that could complement the gadget.

However, not everything is so rosy. Due to the successful design, the convenience of the device suffered. You see, the design of the headphones themselves does not allow all users to wear them comfortably. Although they are in-ear, the size of the halves does not allow them to fit into the ear with the necessary comfort. As a result, the user will have to compromise with the headphones for the sake of a catchy design.

The sound quality of the headset is good. Moreover, this is the level of a headset for a smartphone, no higher. You shouldn't expect incredible sound from it. Quite a smooth flow, without noticeable differences at different frequencies. A distinctive feature from other solutions is the presence of a clear scene. However, this trait immediately disappears as soon as you get into a noisy place. Therefore, Samsung engineers should pay special attention to sound insulation and, perhaps, change the material of the tips to a higher quality one with better insulating properties.

But in essence, the headset looks great and performs its functions flawlessly, what else is needed?

And although most consumers do not associate the Samsung brand with accessories from the world of sound, the company has some portfolio and interesting devices in this segment. For example, the Gear Circle wireless headset, which will be discussed in the review.

What is this?

Samsung Gear Circle is a Bluetooth headset with apt-x support, thoughtful controls and dependence on devices of this company (the word Gear in the name seems to hint at the need to use the corresponding application), in particular smartphones or Gear S smartwatches, with which the model was presented. And although Samsung is not famous for low prices for its devices, Gear Circle, among other things, is also interesting for its cost, which in Ukraine does not exceed $80.

How does she look?

Family portrait: Samsung Gear Circle headset and Galaxyy A7 smartphone

Samsung Gear Circle is a wireless headset with a back-mount and earbuds with good noise isolation. In terms of form factor, the model is closest to devices such as Plantronics Backbeat Fit and LG Tone Infinim, although with its own body features. So, the Gear Circle stays tightly on the neck. Especially if you use the transparent plastic bow that comes with the kit. They come in three sizes in total, we had the M which was perfect for me. In the cold season, when there is a lot of clothing, a headset with a headband should be worn under all scarves and hairstyles, otherwise the headphones will fall out.

The exact weight of the model is not indicated in the specifications. But its body consists of three fairly weighty (by headset standards) elements: two headphones and a battery located in the back of the head. Using a bow that rests on the neck neutralizes excess weight. The wire connecting the headset together looks reliable. During rain and other wet conditions, Gear Circle is protected from moisture according to the p2i standard.

There are only three controls on the headset body: a slider that starts pairing mode, a button to turn on/off/answer calls/call S Voice, playback controls, and a touchpad for adjusting the volume (on the right earpiece). I liked that there is a separate control for starting pairing mode. Typically, on all headsets this function is combined with the on/off key. A touchpad for volume control is also a good idea. But there is a nuance - it is unrealistic to use it with gloves. Through thin sports contact occurs, but in warm winter ones it does not. You have to adjust the volume on your smartphone if the need arises.

And although the Samsung Gear Circle fits perfectly on the neck, due to the large weight and size of the “ears” themselves, it does not always fit perfectly in the user’s ears. There are no problems when walking, especially if you choose the right attachments. Unfortunately, I can’t show you three of them in the box, since the gadget was brought to us without any packaging. Apparently, we had some average ones. They were a bit large for my ears, although when walking this is again almost unnoticeable. When jogging, especially in winter, the model does not hold the ears so securely. Headphones often fall out due to shaking and their own weight. Due to their size, the cap always tends to rise, and controlling sound using the touch panel with a gloved hand is inconvenient. But headsets for sports are a completely separate issue. During physical activity, almost any headphones fall out of your ears. and those with an occipital attachment annoy with a knock on the neck. The only exception in my practice was the Plantronics Backbeat Fit headset. Samsung Gear Circle fits in the ears when running no better or worse than the average wireless or wired one, but is inferior to specialized ones.

The size of the tips, of course, plays an important role in how securely the model fits in the ears.

Samsung Gear Circle is not called a “circle” for nothing. If you connect the headphones (with a built-in magnet), then the whole structure really turns into almost a circle. Controlling playback or answering calls occurs automatically - just connect or disconnect the magnets. If we add to this the fact that in standby mode the Gear Circle’s battery charge lasts for a long time, much longer than the same Plantronics Backbeat Fit, then you get an ideal solution for those who talk a lot on the phone and don’t like to charge gadgets often and fuss with connecting them. According to Samsung, the gadget, when not in use, should look like a decoration on the neck when not in use. How harmonious it will be in this role depends on your clothing style and color scheme. This is what it looks like

Access headset available in black, blue and white.

The ergonomics of the Samsung Gear Circle body seemed to me to be good for people leading an active social life and those who like to play music from their mobile device everywhere. The only contraindication for Gear Circle is use during active sports activities - there are headsets that stay in the ears much better.

What's so special about management?

Firstly, it turns music on and off or automatically answers calls when the headphones are disconnected. I really can't put into words how convenient this is. You have to try it once to expect similar behavior from all headsets in the world in the future. Secondly, I repeat that I liked that the device search function is placed on a separate key. Thirdly, volume control is elegantly implemented - you don’t need to look for any buttons. Only in winter it turns out to be uncomfortable.

In fact, Gear Circle does not need a Samsung smartphone to work as a headset - it connects to anyone. And it supports simultaneous work with two gadgets and pairing with eight. But to connect and configure notifications, as well as organize voice control of your smartphone via S Voice, you need Gear Manager. You can download the application from Galaxy Apps. It requires Android at least 4.2.2 and at least 1 GB of RAM to work. If you don't want to download from the Samsung store, you can go to apps.samsung.com/gear. Oddly enough, the program refused to be installed on the Samsung tablet (Galaxy Tab Active). There were no problems with the smartphone (Galaxy A7).

On the main screen in the Gear Manager program, you can see the charge status of the headset - useful, although it’s a pity that this information is not displayed on the notification panel. There you can also configure programs from which you want to receive notifications through your headphones. Notifications can be voiced in two types - simple and detailed. At first I set the detailed mode for messages, but then practice showed that simple is enough for any programs. In simple mode, only the source of the event in the smartphone is announced (Gmail, Skype, SMS, etc.). In detail - the contents of the message. After the robotic woman pedantically read out two notices from the bank to me, I almost went crazy and decided that it was enough for me to only know the source. I thought that I would have to look at my smartphone for the full text, and from the headset I would only learn about the sender. But no, everything is much more complicated. Although somewhere while driving a car or bicycle, especially if you are in the habit of controlling your smartphone via S Voice, the detailed format will be useful. You can connect notifications to absolutely all programs installed on your smartphone.

Here, in Gear Manager, you can adjust the equalizer. That is, his costs adjust because the result of this setting will affect the result of the headset music data.

And using a Samsung smartphone with Gear Circle allows you to control it with your voice. To be honest, I don’t really like all these smart functions in gadgets. S Voice knows commands in Russian, but all these nuances of pronunciation (both mine and the electronic “voice” of the smartphone) greatly annoy me. The second point is that to launch S Voice you need to press the only physical button on the headset for about 1 second. If you don't hold it enough, the music will turn on or off. If you hold it too long, the headset will turn off. It takes skill. I was able to get used to the pace of Gear Circle in ten minutes, but I still didn’t get the habit of controlling my smartphone with my voice. If you have one, then having such an opportunity in Gear Circle will be a definite plus for you.

How long does it work?

Samsung Gear Circle is equipped with a 180 mAh battery. The specifications state 300 hours of standby time, 11 of talk time and 9 of music playback. I was satisfied with the autonomy of the gadget. It would be difficult to verify the veracity of the assessment of work in standby mode and talk mode, but the Gear Circle works out for 9 hours of music playback at medium volume. Under the conditions of the measurement, it even turned out to be a little more, about 10-15 minutes, although during the day I interrupted the music a couple of times to talk. In use mode, when the Gear Circle is connected to a smartphone, but I listen to music on average for an hour and a half a day, the gadget lasted for three days. The result is much better than the Planctronics sports headset.

How are things going with the sound?

Samsung Gear Circle supports audio transmission via Bluetooth (version 3.0, by the way) without loss of quality (apt-X and Samsung HD). Therefore, it is suitable even for those users who previously abandoned the comfort of wireless technologies in favor of sound.

Gear Circle is distinguished by good noise insulation - the listener does not disturb the office, the office does not disturb the listener. If you are gaping on the road, you may not notice an approaching car, and on a subway train you will be able to listen to music rather than the rumble of wheels. Somewhere in the background the noise of the subway will still be heard, and the roar of the road will be a little audible while walking near a busy highway, but at an unobtrusive level. The Gear Circle has a decent volume reserve; I like to listen to music loudly, and every time I had to reconnect the gadget, I turned down the volume a little. But Technoslav Bergamot, having connected the headset to his Macbook, complained that it did not sound as loud as he would like. To get loud sound from Gear Circle, you must first agree in the app that any hearing problems you may have are your responsibility (as shown in the screenshots above). The same practice is found in many modern Android smartphones. Then you can make it loud.

By the standards of a wireless headset, the sound of the Samsung Gear Circle is excellent, spacious and clear and without a “metallic” taste in the highs, if you connect it to a decent source. It’s a gift that the device supports sound transmission standards without loss of quality. But in comparison with the LG Tone Infinim, it seemed less expressive to me (and, by the way, to Tekhnoslav Bergamot, who also compared both devices). However, the comparison can only conditionally be called objective - different sources, different music. All this could affect perception. But the Samsung headset definitely wins over the sports Plancronic Backbeat Fit.

Bottom line

The advisability of purchasing a Samsung Gear Circle depends on whether you have Samsung mobile devices (meeting the requirements) and what kind of lifestyle you lead, respectively, for what purposes you will use the headset. If you can't imagine life without running, then Gear Circle will not be the optimal choice. If you don’t consider yourself an avid sportsman, yogi, or wizard, but you need the most comfortable headset with good battery life and high-quality sound, and you have a Samsung smartphone, then you should definitely look at Gear Circle. There is simply nothing better on the market in terms of control and connectivity. If, in addition, your lifestyle involves voice communication with a mobile device via S Voice, then Circle will only make your life more convenient. If you don’t have a Samsung gadget on your household, then, by and large, there’s no point in Circle. You can buy a decent headset from the LG Tone line with more outstanding sound (Infinim) or at a more attractive price (Tone+ first generation).

5 reasons to buy Samsung Gear Circle:

  • better implementation of control in headsets;
  • high-quality sound;
  • a convenient neck mount that makes it difficult to lose the gadget when not in use;
  • large volume reserve;
  • the ability to voice control a smartphone (Samsung) from a headset.

2 reasons not to buy Samsung Gear Circle:

  • Without a Samsung smartphone, the purchase is meaningless;
  • you need a headset that fits perfectly on your ears during workouts.

Here is a very unusual Bluetooth stereo headset. The model has an original shape, unique design, support for the Samsung Gear application and high-quality sound. Let's take a closer look at the Samsung Gear Circle.

Appearance, quality of materials

The first acquaintance with the headset caused mixed feelings - it looks like this is a collar, but how does it fit on the ears? And everything is simple, because the headphones have magnetized elements that hold this necklace.

The control unit itself, from which the wires go to the headphones, has a streamlined shape. In general, the model looks quite unusual and a little futuristic. We tested a black headset; white and blue models are also available for sale. The main material is plastic, while rubber is used in the cable and ear pads. The assembly is at a high level - nothing sticks together or falls apart, this gadget is pleasant to hold in your hands.

Ergonomics

“Unfastening” our necklace, we throw the control transmitter behind our neck and in front of us are two rather large headphones, which can hang separately or linked. Much to our chagrin, it is not possible to say that the stereo headset is completely imperceptible and comfortable. In a static position, say, at home or in the office, there are absolutely no complaints. But as soon as you start using the device on the street, discomfort appears.

The headphones are quite large in size and noticeable weight, which limits head movement and does not allow for maximum fixation. Listening under the Samsung Gear Circle will also be problematic due to its considerable size and shape. The ear pads were also not the most comfortable - you always get the impression that the tips don’t fit well and you want to fix them.

Controls, interfaces

In order to turn on Samsung Gear Circle, you need to move the slider on the left earphone; to turn on visibility/switch tracks/answer calls, use the button and the corresponding indicator on the right earphone. The main unit has a microUSB connector for charging and a corresponding indicator.

The volume itself is adjusted using the touch sensor on the left earphone; you just need to swipe your fingers up or down to change the volume, it’s very convenient. The device also has a vibration drive that creates vibrations when turned on, incoming calls, pairing, etc.

The headset connects to smartphones and other devices using the Bluetooth 3.0 interface with support for HSP, HFP, A2DP, AVRCP profiles. The connection is similar to all modern Bluetooth headsets and is not difficult.

Sound quality

The Bluetooth stereo headset in question runs on a system based on the CSR8670 chip, which guarantees high sound quality. Lossless codecs Apt-X, Samsung HD and SBC are supported. After a week of listening to music using the Samsung Gear Circle paired with the Samsung Galaxy S5, the experience is overwhelmingly positive. The sound is perfectly balanced and does not have dominant frequencies. The headset makes it clear to hear the difference between MP3 and FLAC. Instruments are clearly distinguishable; with high-quality recording, the width of the stage and overall drive are pleasantly surprising. The maximum volume is simply off the charts, and the sound insulation is excellent - this allows you to listen to music anywhere. The interlocutor can be heard loudly and clearly in any situation, no complaints.

Microphone

The quality of the transmitted voice is also at a high level; the interlocutor can hear you perfectly. The microphone itself is located in the right earpiece, which, when talking, it is advisable to move towards the mouth, since in the standard position, audibility decreases.

Functionality

The headset works with any Bluetooth-enabled device, but to get the best functionality from the Samsung Gear Circle you will need a Samsung smartphone and the Samsung Gear app. The latter is a headset manager where you can find out about the battery status, rename the device, configure the SoundAlive equalizer and alerts.

It is also possible to adjust the actions when connecting the two magnetic ends - end the call or stop playback. In addition, you can enable voice control and a sound monitor, which will help protect your hearing by calculating the level of stress when listening to music.

Autonomy

The device has a 180 mAh battery. The manufacturer claims that Samsung Gear Circle is capable of 11 hours of talk time and 9 hours of audio playback. In practice, the results are approximately the same, and in some cases even better. So, during testing, the headset worked quietly for 10 hours while listening to music at a volume of 70% of the maximum, which is not a bad result.

Results

What we're left with is an extraordinary-looking Bluetooth headset that will make many passers-by take a look at you. In addition to its unusual appearance, Samsung Gear Circle includes excellent sound, which many will like, and good functionality. Among the shortcomings, it is worth noting that the ergonomics are not entirely successful, but this is a matter of habit. The cost of the model at the time of writing was about $100, which is quite reasonable for such a headset.
