Garmin 2. Southern style

Watches have long lost their intended purpose. Today it is an indicator of the status of their owner. Garmin Fenix 2 battery men's smart watch that will appeal to both athletes and business leaders. Garmin produces watches and bracelets aimed primarily at athletes. This brand is a sign of quality and functionality. Fenix 2 review follows.

Brief description of the model

The Phoenix 2 review showed that it is an improvement on the first model. In terms of appearance, nothing has changed. And the screen, and the diagonal and the material. Everything is identical. But Garmin is not the kind of company that presents new model for the sake of one single button. The technological content of the second model is completely different. Typically, smartwatches are focused on jogging and strength training in the gym. There are models that... And here everyone, from runners to snowboarders, will find something for themselves.

Included

Along with the watch, Garmin put a lot of interesting things in the box, which once again emphasizes the status of the device. So in the kit:

  • Charging cord
  • Adapter along with different socket adapter options
  • Instructions for use
  • Screwdrivers for belt replacement
  • Velcro strap
  • You can choose one of two configuration options: without a heart rate sensor or with it.

Tip: If you purchase a heart rate sensor along with a Garmin watch, then such a purchase will be much more profitable than purchasing a heart rate monitor separately. If the owner already has a heart rate sensor, then it needs to be synchronized with the watch. Fenix 2 can interact with ANT standard sensors.

Appearance and Design

Athletes and amateurs active rest can often find themselves in extreme situations. The developers took care of this and made the watch shockproof, and provided the glass with scratch protection. The body is made of durable matte plastic. All colors and numbers on the display are displayed clearly, even in sunlight. Embossed on the back of the device serial number, and sensors are located on the sides.

Technological characteristics

The main characteristics are presented in the table:

Sensors

The model has built-in motion sensors:

  • Heights
  • Barometer
  • temperature sensor
  • Compass
  • Accelerometer

What else can a watch do?

Smart watches from Garmin will not only count the distance traveled. Smart watch can record the descent of a mountain on skis, show laps and speed in open swimming and will be useful in multimedia sports. Through installation, the watch is programmed for a specific workout. If the route is lost, they will provide navigation assistance.

Receive advanced training data

Watches from Garmin allow you not only to read information received from sensors, but also to determine the level of sports training of the owner. Shared use with a heart rate sensor, through indicators of running speed, frequency of work, the consumed volume of oxygen per minute is calculated. You can track your pace and read recommendations for restoring it.

There is a descent counter for skis, which does not take into account the time on the lift. A removable fabric belt can be fastened over the jacket sleeve.

The second Phoenix was supplemented with notifications. The watch can receive incoming calls and display the text of the received message in full.

Modes

The watch supports a large number of modes:

  1. Cross Country;
  2. For tourists;
  3. Following the chosen route;
  4. Bike;
  5. Parachute jumping;
  6. Swimming in open areas and in pools where you need to enter parameters;
  7. Mountaineering mode, in which the watch displays vertical speed and distance.
  8. In addition to special modes, there are also standard applications, like in a smartphone.

For lovers of outdoor recreation

Garmin developers know that the only thing more beneficial than training is proper rest. And they did not stand aside. The clock can display information about the duration of daylight hours, and the barometer will notify you in the event of an impending storm. A compass and navigation will help you not to lose your way in the forest, or to get to your vacation spot along a laid out route.

Applications

The Garmin fenix 2 watch can be used either independently or in tandem with smartphones and iPhones. For the latter, the Basecamp application has been developed. The program does not work on the Android system. For smartphones there is a “Connect” application focused on training, available for IOS.

Reading principle

What is the most important thing in training? Of course, the accuracy of the data obtained under load. The Garmin Phoenix watch collects and analyzes information from all sensors, and not just what it receives via GPS.

Battery life

How long can Garmin Fenix 2 last without charging? With navigation and Bluetooth turned on, the device can work from 14 hours to a day. If these functions are turned off, the watch exhibits endurance and can last 8 days. The second question is how much to charge? And here is the record. Charging time is about 2 hours.

Company Garmin first introduced a product called Fenix to the market five years ago, in June 2012. Since then, this device has undergone a number of significant changes, evolving from an ordinary watch for long hikes into a useful gadget for runners. But in the new generation, the changes turned out to be so significant that Fenix2 can be bought at watchshop.kz/collection/fenix-5 and called completely suitable for any sports.

Size and weight

Compared to Fenix1 watch Garmin Phoenix2 practically unchanged, maintaining their familiar appearance. They could be called “twins”, but they are not identical, since there are a number of significant differences between the two models. So, the layout of the buttons on the visible part has changed. There have also been minor changes to the inside of the device; the accelerometer has been modified to work while swimming. In appearance, the changes also affected the length of the strap; for the new generation, it is slightly longer, which allows it to be used on larger wrists. But even on small women’s wrists they fit quite well and do not fall off. At the same time, the weight, compared to the previous generation, remained approximately the same and practically did not change.

Clock operating modes

In order to select the sport you want to practice, just click on the red button on the right top corner. Once the mode is determined, the device will automatically search for and pair with sensors associated with it. Once this process is completed, connection to satellites will occur. This can be done either via a USB cable connected to Garmin Express, or via a Bluetooth connection with a smartphone, which must have the application Garmin Connect Mobile.

After all the preparatory activities, the screen will show the current data, navigation is carried out using the up and down buttons. The device can even track the route using GPS coordinates, continuing to navigate even in places where communication is lost, using the built-in accelerometer.

When the current sports session is completed, by pressing the red key you can go to the menu for selecting another mode. From there you can return to the current settings again, or by using the function Resume Later, put the device into standby mode when communication with satellites is turned off to save energy.

Mode: running

Fenix2 supports very extensive functionality, but the most significant functions will be discussed here. They, almost literally, determine the convenience of the device for the user.

Automatic distance markers: This feature allows you to make marks after a certain distance has been covered. The distance is set by users, depending on their own preferences. With this function you can compare your own performance on each individual running section.

Automatic pause: extremely useful feature for running in the city, where you often have to stop at traffic lights. When idle, the watch automatically stops recording your running time and resumes it when movement begins.

Virtual partner: the device creates a kind of “colleague” for running, which moves along with the users. At any moment you can find out whether your partner is behind or is already far ahead. True, this opportunity is most convenient on flat terrain, since the opponent does not pay attention to hilly terrain and moves with equal success on any type of terrain.

Warning: An extremely useful feature that automatically warns the user when certain events occur. It can be configured to respond to speed, heart rate, arrival at a certain point, elapsed time and much more.

Fenix2 watches can also track current running information and display it in the form of numerical indicators:

rhythm – shows the number of steps taken per minute;

Vertical Oscillation - allows you to see how high in the vertical grid the runner's torso moves with each step;

Ground Contact Time – Shows how long each foot was in contact with the ground.

No less useful are the functions related to recovery and planning for the upcoming race:

estimated oxygen uptake – based on heart rate allows you to calculate an important indicator of running fitness VO2Max or oxygen absorption;

Race Planner – uses VO2Max and age/gender chart to suggest optimal race times;

Rest Advisor - using available information, gives advice on how much rest you need before your next race;

Rest check – analyzes the first six to ten minutes of a workout and shows information about how much the user has recovered since the last time;

Workout results – displays a score of how effective the workout was for the user’s body.

Mode: swimming

This mode has become a significant addition to the device Phoenix2. It allows you to track swimming performed both in the pool and in “big” water - in rivers, lakes, seas and so on. Switching between types of water space occurs in the submenu after selecting the swimming mode.

Pool mode

This mode uses a built-in accelerometer, which determines the distance traveled and the amount of repulsion from the walls of the pool. Therefore, you must first set exact values for the distance between the two walls. The only drawback of this mode is the need to constantly pause the watch if swimming was temporarily interrupted by conversations with a friend, a short run to the shower or something else.

The device can measure the distance traveled, dividing it into segments, as is the case with running. But the functionality is much more interesting when connected to Garmin Connect. Now there is also the number of arm swings, which allows you to evaluate the effectiveness of the training much more accurately. At the same time, the device showed its good side and the values stored in it really correspond to reality.

Open water mode

In terms of its capabilities, in general, it is similar to the swimming mode in a pool, but the method and accuracy of calculation are significantly different. To determine the distance traveled it is used GPS, and the accelerometer measures the number of times you swing your arms. Moreover, every time the watch goes under water, the signal is lost and the connection is established again. As a result, the spread of data stored by the device can be quite large. But, despite this drawback, Fenix2 works very productively in marine conditions. Based on the results of the swim, it will be possible to obtain a fairly detailed map, the error level is within ten percent, where not only the route will be displayed, but also basic indicators for the distance and the number of arm swings.

Ride a bike

In a new device this mode has been significantly improved and allows you to qualitatively measure various indicators, including the force put into each movement. In this mode, the watch can be attached not only to the wrist, but also to the bike itself, which is very convenient, especially for those who do not like unnecessary objects on their wrist.

The settings are highly flexible and it is possible to select different modes, including separate changes in speed, rhythm or their combined consideration. Also in the settings menu you will have to determine the size of the wheels, as well as where the race takes place - outdoors or indoors. The main advantage of Fenix2 is the ability to save and transfer all data using Garmin Connect. On the computer, all information will be presented not only in numerical, but also in graphical values, which will allow you to evaluate the results of your training much more effectively.

Multisport

This mode allows you to set the clock to count up to three various types playing sports. In this case, the device automatically determines when the new stage workouts and displays pages with corresponding indicators. Distinctive feature Fenix2 is an opportunity to choose the upcoming activity, so both triathlon fans and users who prefer two sports will not be offended.

Autonomy

In hours Phoenix2 two modes are implemented - in the first, communication with satellites is updated every second, which allows you to obtain the most accurate results, and in the second, updates occur every sixty seconds. But at the same time, you have to pay for high accuracy of coordinates over time battery life, which is reduced to fifteen or, at best, seventeen hours. If you are not planning a marathon race lasting a day, then such indicators should be more than enough.

At the same time, the second mode is completely suitable for those cases where special measurement accuracy is not so important. It uses the charge more economically, which allows you to extend it up to fifty-five hours.

Communication with other devices

The Fenix2 sports watch has gone a long way in terms of connectivity. external devices, compared to the previous generation. There are several different channels for input or output of information, each of which has specific functionality:

Garmin Connect Mobile – allows you to download the results of completed workouts, download scheduled races, and track the user’s current activity;

Garmin Basecamp – necessary for working with planned routes, allows you to create them and track them on the map;

base OS capabilities operating system, installed on Fenix2, fully complies with modern smartwatch standards and allows you to receive information from various applications.

Results

In general, the device turned out to be quite well thought out and takes into account all the needs that arise among modern triathletes or fans of several sports at once. At the same time, the clock Phoenix2 offer convenient ways to exchange information with external equipment, both for collecting current data and for summing up after a completed run or swim.

Don’t forget about additional functionality, such as navigation. A smart watch can serve not only as a compass, allowing you to navigate between points stored in advance in memory, but also as a full-fledged navigator with a map display and the current position.

Thanks to numerous sensors and the ability to collect diverse information about the state of the user's body, Fenix2 will become excellent choice for most amateur and professional athletes.

I am the proud owner of both models - Fenix 3, Fenix 2. Therefore, I carry out my comparative analysis from my personal experience and subjective judgments. But in order to somehow abstract from any comments, let’s create a comparative table between these models:

So, a comparison between Garmin Fenix 3 or Garmin Fenix 2 - which is better to buy, which model to choose?

So that you can see the significant differences, I have highlighted them in color.

1 — Price of watches

For the new model, you'll have to fork out $100 for the Fenix 3 Silver, Gray version, or $200 for the new model. for Garmin Fenix 3 Sapphire, down from $400. Phoenix 2.

If you want to get a cardio monitor for running and other dynamic activity measurement (HRM), add another + 50 dollars to the price.

2 - Watch materials

Fenix 3 Silver, Gray models come with rubber straps. At the same time, the color of the case changes in accordance with the name - Gray, Silver.

For Fenix 3 Sapphire, a metal strap is used that matches the color of the case. Additionally, for this business model there is a spare black rubber strap for replacement.

The Fenix 2 has a black rubber strap. By the way, you can order other colors of straps through eBay if you want.

3 — Cases, watch glass

The material of the Fenix 2 watch case feels more like metal to which plastic has been added.

In the Fenix 3 watch, the case material is more similar to an alloy of metal and carbon.

By reducing the Fenix 2 battery from 500 mAh to 300 mAh in the Fenix 3 watch, the thickness of the case has changed slightly. If earlier a watch looked like a big barrel on your hand, now it looks more like a watch :)

The reduction in battery capacity is the price to pay for reducing the height of the Fenix 3 watch case.

Dial glass— to be honest, I really liked the Fenix 3 glass. It feels very different than the Fenix 2. It's like the glass on the Fenix 2 is more like a durable plastic glass. But the Fenix 3 Sapphire is completely different.

But by the way, over all the years of use of the Fenix 2 (swimming, hiking in the mountains, hiking - summer, winter) - no scratches or chips appeared. I don’t know, maybe I wore my watch so carefully?!

I note that the Fenix 3 watch uses a display more high resolution 218 x 218 pixels instead of the 70 x 70 pixels of the Fenix 2. And best of all, it's COLOR. And what’s more, the display type is Transflectronic. In theory, it is more readable in bright sun and the colors will be rich and vibrant.

In the next article I will compare the operating modes of displays during the day and at night with backlighting.

According to my subjective feelings, the dial in bright sunlight is better readable in Fenix 2. However, no one is stopping you from setting a monochrome theme or adjusting the brightness of the display. Perhaps my settings were not suitable for the bright sun.

4 - Navigation

The Fenix 3 watch adds Glonass + GPS as opposed to GPS. On a personal note, I want to say that my Fenix 3 is now much faster in catching satellites than the old Fenix 2 model. Sometimes, I had to wait 2-3 minutes to search for a navigation signal, unlike the Fenix 3, which is ready to work in 3-4 seconds.

This may be due to the use of two GPS + Glonass navigation systems, or perhaps also because the new model uses a new antenna - EXO antenna Garmin.

5 - Protocols

All watches work with Bluetooth, ANT+, via USB cable. The Fenix 3 also adds Wi-Fi, allowing them to download updates and data without a PC. Convenient enough.

6 - Software, data

The most interesting and useful feature of the Fenix 3 watch is support for working with the ConnectIQ portal, where you can upload applications, widgets, watch skins, and data fields that are developed by enthusiasts all over the world to the watch.

How to connect your Fenix 3 watch with ConnectIQ, watch video instructions

Unfortunately, Fenix 2 does not support this feature.

But, on the other hand, you can upload your custom maps to the watch, as an additional layer along which you can show the route. This map is of course schematic on such a small display of 70 x 70 pixels. But this is also good.

All watches work through the Garmin Express app, which makes it easy to reset data to account Garmin, which is located on the Internet.

7 - Sports modes

All watches support all the necessary sports modes: running, triathlon, alpine skiing, rock climbing, swimming, walking.

Although the Fenix 3 has an improved water resistance rating of 10 ATM instead of 5 ATM for the Fenix 2.

But the most interesting thing is that in the instructions for the watch the manufacturer writes that the watch is not intended for deep-sea diving. Why make the Waterproof class to a greater depth is not clear to me. 🙁

Conclusions: should I buy Fenix 3 or Fenix 2?

Of course, Fenix 3 is a model that has moved forward from Fenix 2. Another question is, does your budget allow the purchase of a 3rd Fenix model? In principle, if you need the necessary information for sports and tourism, you can save money and get yourself a Fenix 2.

But it seems to me that Fenix 3 is an expensive foreign car in the world of cars. Those. you can drive a Lada or softly and comfortably, with a set of all additional services: climate control, interior, chassis.

If your budget is a little tight - I would recommend getting Fenix 3 Silver or Gray. Here you can save $100 on the bracelet and glass, and all the new functions will remain in the watch.

Where can I buy Garmin watch?

Hi all!

This is my first review, so please don't hurt me.

For a long time I was looking for a watch like a Casio G-SHOCK or PROTRECK, but I was always put off by their design - for me, they are too overloaded with all sorts of nonsense + a small dial. After wandering around online and offline, I reviewed a bunch of watches like: Suunto, Casio, Polar and ultimately the choice fell on Garmin Fenix 2. Among the advantages I appreciated the presence of Bluetooth and huge numbers on the dial, as well as notification of calls and messages by vibration

And so, the choice is made. Having looked at the prices from the “officials”, I took the risk of taking Refurbished from Ebay. I paid with a stick, the seller sent it within 2 days, before shipping I asked for the opportunity to flash the Russian language into the watch - I was refused with an apology. Well! Happens.

It arrived quite quickly (city of Ust-Kamenogorsk, Republic of Kazakhstan), if not for my stupidity with customs (I entered the number incorrectly cell phone on the parcel).

Workout - you can create a training plan for time intervals and follow it.

Everything was packed in a standard package + wrapped in bubble wrap. I didn’t take a photo of the packaging because... I decided to write a review 10 days after receiving it.

The box is ordinary with the inscription Refurbished unit.

Set:
Charger 100-240V/, 5V, 1A Max.
Soft fabric strap with Velcro + extension for attaching over clothing.
Instructions
Two shaped screwdrivers
Two spare pins and four bolts.

Front side. The case is plastic, matte, and feels durable. The glass is mineral, I decided not to test it for scratch resistance =) The information is perfectly readable, the colors are inverted.

Rear with serial number.

Temperature and pressure sensors are located on the sides

The strap looks reliable, quite soft, but I don’t know how it will behave in the cold.

As an amateur climber, I am interested in the “Mountaineering” mode
It starts by pressing the start button, then you need to select “Climber”
The watch displays vertical speed and distance traveled

By pressing the “Down” button you can change the displayed information.
Location

Map (needs to be preinstalled)

You can also create waypoints.

As a test, I went to the store for juice)
Screenshots from the Connect web portal
By the way, regarding the temperature - on the hand it shows 4-5 degrees higher, to accurately determine it you have to remove it from the hand and wait 10 minutes.

Confident GPS reception I wasn’t in the city, so the schedule is a little “ragged”, I think there will be no problems with this in the mountains.

To my sadness, the watch does not display the Cyrillic alphabet (as you probably already noticed). Therefore, the alerts are unreadable:

Backlight

Watch on hand. To be honest, the watch is a little thick and tends to get caught on something

Satisfied for hours. During the two-week operation, no glitches or jambs were identified. Regarding charging, I’ll say that with Bluetooth turned on and active notifications, they lasted for two days, I didn’t test them further, I just charged and turned off the blue-toothed one, and now after two weeks it’s 30%. Finds satellites quickly - 30-40 seconds.

Traditional pros and cons.

Pros:
Bluetooth Vibration Alert
GPS
Many modes
Durable strap
Rugged housing
Waterproof up to 50 meters (and where more?)
Minuses:
Lack of Russian language (normal Russian, not transliterated)
They're a bit slow with notifications for calls (this doesn't happen with messages)
Cyrillic alphabet is not displayed.
There is no built-in cardio sensor.

In order to choose something that will fit you perfectly, you need to accurately determine your size. Each manufacturer's size is converted to a single international letter value (XS, S, M, etc.). In order to determine your size, you need to find out three parameters: chest girth, waist girth, hip girth, and compare them with to determine which letter value corresponds exactly to your physique. It should be taken into account that each figure is individual, and some deviations in centimeters are acceptable. To do this, you can use and check your parameters with international standards. Also, for greater accuracy, use, remembering to take into account your body type and height. Consider the cut of clothing when choosing the model you like - give preference to a greater result for things that fit tightly to the figure and fitted silhouettes, and in favor of a smaller result for loose and voluminous items. Clothes should not restrict your movements or cause inconvenience. Pay great attention to this when choosing a new item.
