At the 2017 Mobile World Congress, Sony was praised by critics for its Xperia flagship XZ Premium. At the same time, the brand did not forget to present the new device to the world Sony Xperia XA1, as well as its modifications with Plus and Ultra prefixes. These are the successors of the middle series of devices. There are no bright features in the XA1, but in the arsenal of the Japanese manufacturer the device is one of the most balanced in price and technical specifications. Sony review Xperia XA1 will tell you in detail about key features device and its capabilities.

Price list of a new device from the Japanese varies from 17 to 20 thousand rubles depending on the seller. For this money, the buyer gets high performance, a good camera and high-quality assembly in Japanese traditions. The characteristics of the Sony Xperia XA1 are in the table below.

As can be seen from the presented parameters, the device has a complete set wireless interfaces, The Wi-Fi module operates in two bands at the highest speed according to the 802.11ac standard. The device received the prefix DS to its name, which means presence of two SIM cards.

Sony Xperia XA1

Important! Looking ahead, we note that the Sony Xperia XA1 dual has separate slots for SIM and memory cards, that is, it allows you to work in two mobile networks and at the same time expand the main memory. For modern smartphone This is a nice feature.

Design

Mobile devices from Sony can be treated differently. There are ardent fans of the brand, and there are buyers who constantly criticize the company for its high prices. However, it should be noted that from a design point of view the brand has never had problems. These are always beautiful and somewhat strict smartphones. When looking at a shop window with mobile phones Sony equipment immediately catches the eye, but is not always bought.

The design feature of Sony smartphones is characterized by term Loop Surface. If we translate this into Russian, we get a “loop surface.” For Sony Xperia XA1, this means that the metal frames are bent in all directions - towards the display, back, and ends. Despite these curves, the body itself is visually square; sharp corners are another feature of the company.

On a note! An interesting fact is that users often complain in reviews about these sharp corners - they tear their pockets. Despite this, the brand's leaders, and with them the designers, firmly stand their ground and are not going to deviate from the usual form in the near future.

Despite the general similarity of the design of the new device with older devices, the Sony Xperia XA1 DS has a feature - very thin side frames and wide protrusions at the top and bottom. Due to this, the model turned out to be narrow and elongated. It's a little inconvenient, but you just need to get used to the phone. Even though the diagonal is not the smallest, it looks interesting. Rear side of the device – matte and completely non-slippery. But it has a significant drawback: without a case or cover, the device gets scratched very quickly.

The arrangement of elements on the body is quite familiar: the camera, speaker and sensor are located on top. In this case, the speaker is located at the very end, and the latter is its upper limit. The lower indent, almost two centimeters wide, does not have any elements, and only at the very bottom, near the border with the end, is the speaker installed again. Thus, the phone when listening to music through the speakers directs sound towards the user. This is especially pleasant when watching a movie - the sound does not dissipate to the sides.

The control buttons are traditionally touch sensitive. The glass protecting the display rises very slightly above the body, and if you look very closely, you can see small roundness in the 2.5D style.

On the back of the device, the user will only see the camera and flash. They are flush with the back panel and do not protrude at all. The control buttons are located on the right. The power supply, as usual, is round in shape, the volume control is an elongated oval shape. The camera operation button, which is obligatory for Sony, is also located here.

The left side accommodates a SIM card slot, as well as a memory card slot. SIM cards are placed on a pull-out tray. The memory card is immediately inserted into the case. The top end received a headphone jack and a microphone. At the bottom there is a speaker and Type-C with OTG support.

By phone color Sony Xperia XA1 is available in four variants: pink, gold, black, white. At the same time, the device is the same color on all sides, and what’s nice is that for each color the corresponding color design of the main theme is selected. This makes the device image completely complete. There are no nuances regarding the assembly. The phone is strong and reliable.

The diagonal of the model is 5 inches. Formally, the surface can be classified as 2.5D glass, but, as mentioned above, the slope is very small and almost unnoticeable. The device is protected by Gorilla Glass 3. Yes effective anti-reflective coating. Traditionally, IPS matrices have wide viewing angles, and unlike inexpensive matrices, colors are not inverted here. For such a diagonal, the resolution is not the highest - HD, but the device has image enhancement technology, for which Sony for some reason did not come up with a name. The picture on the screen turns out really good, and even in comparison with some FHD phones there is not much difference felt. In addition, the model has a good color reserve, adequate automatic brightness adjustment, and a high-quality oleophobic coating. There are no complaints about the display.

On a note! The touch is designed for 4 touches. This, of course, is not 10 like the Chinese, but it’s difficult to come up with a task in which you need to touch the screen with all fingers of both hands, so there are no questions about the sensor.

The Sony Xperia XA1 camera is represented by a wide-angle front sensor of 8 megapixels, as well as a main matrix of 23 megapixels with 5x zoom and hybrid autofocus.

Regarding the front camera, it can be noted high-quality shooting with good brightness. In the corners, the image does not lose color and accuracy, as sometimes happens with matrices with wide image capture. The selfie camera's light sensitivity is ISO 3200.

The rear matrix also has wide image capture angle. The maximum photosensitivity is 6400, but for manual settings only 3200 available. Yes electronic stabilization using proprietary technology, in most situations she shows herself with dignity. The camera takes high-quality pictures. The noise reduction technology works at night, sometimes it is too intrusive, but the pictures come out good. For its price, there are no questions about the camera. Big photo buffs will probably find some flaws, but for the vast majority of users it will be excellent.

Regarding the camera controls, it must be emphasized that they are not the most convenient, since all the settings are scattered in different corners of the display, but long-time Sony users will not find this any problem.

Important! There are manual and automatic modes. An interesting mode is augmented reality, when the existing image can be supplemented with various objects from the library. Separately, you can download different goodies for the camera, if necessary.

The device can shoot video in FHD. Unfortunately, the device decided not to shoot in 4K and slow-mo mode with 960 fps, which are present in expensive devices of the brand. But this phone costs less, so you shouldn’t be surprised. According to the picture in the video, the device is not the best. There is some vagueness, but the sound is recorded well - the noise reduction system is working.

Smartphone at work

The Sony Xperia XA1 dual (G3112) smartphone runs on an eight-core Helio P20 processor. This is a 2016 solution that was developed for devices in the mid-price segment. Shows itself quite well. Gains in tests about 60 thousand points. Games launch without any problems. Performance and multitasking high level. The device memory is represented by 3 gigabytes of RAM and 32 gigabytes of main storage. Of these, 1.7 and 23 gigabytes are available to the user, respectively.

Important! The main memory can be expanded with a memory card. If you format it on your phone, then some applications can be transferred to this medium. The device also supports OTG, that is, it understands flash drives connected via a USB adapter.

The device operates in LTE networks and supports all possible standards. However, sometimes the device does not catch the network very confidently and may show fewer connection sticks than smartphones from other brands. This does not interfere with life too much, but it seems that the radio module of the phone is a little lost. This is enough standard problem for Sony, so it’s impossible to call the XA1 only a minus.

There is only one radio module in the phone, but both SIM cards can work in LTE networks simultaneously. This is a good plus for the device. There are no questions regarding the operation of the other interfaces. Wi-Fi supports two bands, NFC allows you to work with travel documents, not to mention paying with a smartphone, Bluetooth provides a fast connection with peripherals.

In terms of battery, the phone is clearly inferior to its competitors. Its reserve is very small, especially considering the chipset from MediaTek, which has never been famous for energy efficiency. As a result, the device will allow you to enjoy the gameplay for four hours, you can read for thirteen hours, and watch movies for about nine hours. Total phone is enough for a working day. The downside is that the device does not support fast or accelerated charging and will reach full capacity in almost three hours.

Conclusion

Sony Xperia XA1 is a fairly good representative in the mid-price segment. It has a couple of drawbacks - the lack of a finger scanner and not the highest autonomy, but in other respects the device shows decent results. Its price in Russia is on average about 20 thousand, and for a Japanese with such parameters this is very pleasant. The ratio of price and characteristics attracts even those customers who are skeptical about this brand. Considering that not everyone usually likes Sony phones, the XA1 is clearly a step in the right direction to capture the market.

Appearance and materials

From a design point of view, we have a typical Sony Style: sharp corners, strict appearance, large frames on top and bottom. The smartphone is sold in four colors: pink, gold, blue and black. It was the last one that was on my test.

The back cover is made of matte practical plastic. In the black version, stains and fingerprints are noticeable at a certain angle; let me assume that on lighter cases all this is not visible.

The top and bottom ends are also plastic, but the side edges are made of aluminum.

Control elements, assembly

Above the display you can see the front camera eye, light and proximity sensors, a speaker grille, and an indicator light.

On the right side there is a power button, a volume rocker and a camera key. The button contains a fingerprint scanner, so it is slightly recessed into the body. Placing the scanner on the side allows you to save space under the screen and simplifies the unlocking process, because your finger immediately rests on the scanner, but if you need to view information from the lock screen, this will be problematic, because when touched, the display will immediately unlock.

On the left there is a tray for two nanoSIM cards and a slot for a memory card. Important: the slot and tray are not combined, this is rarely seen these days.

At the bottom there is a Type C port and an external speaker, and at the top there is a mini-jack and a second microphone.

Over the course of a month of use, I did not have any problems with the assembly, the device does not creak, does not play, and there are no gaps.

Dimensions

I always like to call the design of Sony smartphones strict and light. From the renderings and photographs, one gets the feeling that the devices are thin and light. Unfortunately, these descriptions have nothing to do with the XA1 Plus. The smartphone is thick and heavy, but it is completely unclear what this is connected with; pay attention to the competitors in the table, each of them is thinner and lighter, while the XA1 Plus has the smallest battery capacity. After the same XZ1, the XA1 Plus feels completely different. I know that there are people who like to feel the heaviness of a smartphone in their hands, but I’m not one of them, so I’ll attribute the dimensions to the disadvantages of the model.

Compared to Apple iPhone 7Plus

Screen

The smartphone uses a high-quality display: it has good viewing angles, there is no air gap, color rendition is close to natural, and the brightness range is above average. I liked the good oleophobic coating and high screen resolution. Automatic brightness works too aggressively, you have to manually adjust it.

Separately, I would like to note the small side frames around the display; it feels as if the glass is bending a little at the edges, literally just a little, but the perception of the frames is completely different because of this.

But the top and bottom frames, traditionally for Sony, are large. Some people may not like it, but I didn’t feel any particular discomfort during use.

Despite the large diagonal, the smartphone has a rather large interface. I would attribute this to the disadvantages of the model, but, fortunately, you can change the scaling and size of elements in the settings.

Sony traditionally delights with the opportunity fine tuning display. You can change the white balance yourself and choose one of three color presets.

operating system

The smartphone works under Android control 7.0 and the proprietary Xperia UI shell. Sony has plans to update it to 8.0, but for now the current firmware works on the “seven”.

Xperia UI very carefully changes the interface of stock Android, while not significantly modifying its appearance. I like this approach. Just recently we released detailed review Xperia UI, be sure to read it if you want to learn more about the smartphone.

Performance

The performance of the device, in my opinion, is the second weak point of the smartphone (after dimensions). I tested a number of models with FHD resolution running on Helio P20, and, in theory, this chipset should support FHD perfectly, but on the XA1 Plus there is a slight stutter when scrolling the interface. This applies to both desktops and the browser with third party applications. Let me suggest that the issue is more likely to be a lack of optimization than a lack of power on the Helio P20. By the way, at your request, I am now running an additional test for RAM speed. His results are below.

Autonomous operation

As I wrote above, the battery capacity with such a thickness and weight of the smartphone is surprising. However, let's not judge a book by its cover and look at the test results. And they, in general, are not bad: 10 hours in video mode, and 2% background discharge per night. Let us add to this that when everyday use you can count on 4-5 hours of display on, and we get a pretty good picture.

By the way, the smartphone supports fast charging using MediaTek Pump Express+ 2.0 technology; the smartphone is fully charged in about 80-85 minutes.

Camera

Daytime photos on a smartphone turn out quite well, but artificial lighting and night photography are much more difficult for it. Keep in mind that shots in this light will be either blurry or noisy. At night, the picture also turns out to be overexposed, due to manual mode reduce brightness.

Video shooting is typical for this price segment, but the selfie camera was pleased with the presence of autofocus. Examples of pictures are below.

Wireless interfaces

But in terms of wireless interfaces, Sony can only be praised. Firstly, the smartphone supports the aptX codec, secondly, it has separate slots for memory cards and SIM cards, and thirdly, it has a full-fledged NFC module, which is rare for this price segment.

Conclusion

I had no complaints about the quality of speech transmission; you and your interlocutor can hear each other perfectly. The external speaker is mono, but still loud enough, you're unlikely to miss it incoming call or notification.

At retail, the Xperia XA1 Plus costs 20 thousand rubles. For this money, the device turned out to be somewhat contradictory. On the one hand, it has many advantages: good operating time, Type C port, NFC support, aptX wireless codec, high-quality display, separate slots for SIM cards and memory cards. On the other hand, there are also plenty of disadvantages: a thick and heavy body, average performance, and a not-so-good camera.

In the segment up to 20 thousand, XA1 Plus has many competitors from Chinese companies, here and regular smartphones and newfangled full-screen ones. True, half of them do not have a Type C port and almost none have an NFC module.

But the Chinese are not the only competitors for the XA1 Plus. It is worth highlighting Samsung Galaxy J7 2017 - a strong Korean opponent. J7 2017 also has an NFC module, better camera, and the only downside is the microUSB port. And even with the trump card XA1 Plus, a separate slot for SIM and microSD, Samsung responds in kind.

And what is the end result? If you need a combination of NFC + Type C + separate slot + almost stock Android, while the dimensions and camera do not play a key role, then you should look towards the XA1 Plus. As soon as priorities shift, strong competitors immediately appear in in the form of Samsung, Huawei, Xiaomi and Meizu.

In fact, Sony did almost everything perfectly, I would have worked a little on the dimensions and performance (I would have taken the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 625), and it would have been an excellent device. Especially for geeks who so value all these little things like NFC, Type C and separate slots.

Hero this review became a smartphone from the famous manufacturer Sony. The Xperia XA1 Dual model is the second copy in the XA line. It was presented in 2017. Unlike its predecessor, it has characteristics that correspond to the middle segment. But let’s look at which ones exactly in detail.

Appearance, controls, dimensions

Buyers are presented with several options for the Sony Xperia XA1 Dual: white, gold, black and pink. The case has a clear rectangular shape with rough corners, which is quite consistent with the style of this brand. The top and bottom ends have a chrome finish, thanks to which attention is focused on the small thickness. The dimensions of the gadget are 145 × 67 × 8 mm. Most of the body is made of plastic, but the “sides” have a metal finish.

Users responded enthusiastically to the presence of an oleophobic coating. Now there is no need to constantly wipe the screen. Back panel has a matte surface. Unfortunately, there are always fingerprints on it, which can only be dealt with by putting on a case.

As for the functional elements, they are all located in the usual places, so there is no need to dwell on them in detail.

Screen and camera features

The middle segment corresponds to the XA1 Dual. For operation, the gadget has a five-inch diagonal screen. It is based on an IPS matrix. The colors on the display are displayed realistically and the viewing angles are wide. When you tilt your smartphone, you may notice a decrease in contrast and brightness. The pixel density (294 ppi) is enough to avoid seeing “squares” on the screen. Resolution - HD.

Particularly noteworthy is the main camera, which features a 23-megapixel Exmor RS™ sensor. Hybrid autofocus. There is a quick start option. Wide angle lens. High-quality pictures taken by the main camera are obtained even in poor lighting (ISO 6400). To get closer to the subject, a five-fold zoom is provided.

The front camera has a resolution of 8 megapixels. It is based on the Exmor R sensor. The pictures are obtained good quality even in low light conditions.

Sony Xperia XA1 Dual: Performance Specifications

The “heart” of the smartphone is the powerful Helio P20 chipset TM MediaTek. It is based on Cortex-A53 computing elements. There are eight of them installed in total. The platform operates as a 4*4 type. The first half of the cores is capable of accelerating to 2300 MHz, the second operates at a lower frequency - 1600 MHz. There should be no problems with displaying graphics, since the device has a Mali-T880MP2 video card installed.

The gadget's power is enough to perform all tasks, without exception. Even “heavy” games run without problems. Of course, the amount of RAM plays a big role in performance. The developers installed 3Gb, which by modern standards is quite consistent with the middle segment. The size of the built-in memory is 32Gb. About 10 are occupied by the system. If the remaining is not enough, you can use an external drive.

The device is running the latest version of the OS. The seventh "Android" is supplemented with proprietary Sony interface. There are practically no pronounced differences between the “pure” operating system and the shell, with the exception of some “tricks”. For example, unlocking is carried out by swiping up or to the left, the search for programs is started by swiping down.

Battery life

An important criterion for a mobile device is timing battery life. In this matter Sony specifications The Xperia XA1 Dual is hardly impressive. The battery installed in the phone has a small capacity. Unfortunately, only 2300 mAh is provided for everything. Accordingly, there is no point in expecting high results. With an average load, you can count on no more than 20-24 hours. If you put your smartphone in austerity mode, you can increase the battery life to two days.

Sony Xperia XA1 Dual: reviews

This model went on sale only in 2017, but users have already identified the strengths and weaknesses of the smartphone. The advantages definitely include an excellent display, original design, quality of materials used, body assembly and, of course, the main camera.

There were also shortcomings in the Sony Xperia XA1 Dual. The battery characteristics are quite weak for such a “filling”. IN large quantities reviews say that after a few months of use, the sensor around the edges stops working. Many also noticed that the device really lacks a fingerprint scanner.

Sony Xperia XA1 – new model middle class, presented at MWC 2017 and being the most inexpensive option among the new products. In shaping the appearance Sony smartphone They applied the design concept of Loop Surface, and in comparison with its predecessor Xperia XA, the new product turned out to be more brutal and already corresponds to the features of the new flagship. Representatives of the company noted that the smartphone carries a flagship design and functions. But some technical parameters could be better even within its price segment. Overall, the model is worthy of attention.

Personally, I am very impressed by the appearance of the smartphone; it is definitely impossible to confuse the hand of the designers of which company was involved. Thin side frames add even more sophistication, which cannot be said about the margins at the bottom and top.

The side panels are aluminum and, despite the predominance of plastic in the case, the smartphone does not feel like cheap plastic to the touch, but rather a completely monolithic block that is pleasant to the touch. The manufacturer didn’t deprive you of an abundance of body colors: there are gold, white, black and pink options to choose from.

The Xperia XA1 screen was the same as its predecessor - 5-inch IPS matrix, covered with Gorilla Glass with an olephobic coating, but its resolution is 1280 by 720 pixels (HD). Pixelation is not noticeable if you pay attention to it. Some will consider this resolution normal, but in our humble opinion, a Full HD matrix would be much more appropriate and attractive.

The Helio P20 chipset from MediaTek will carry all the functional luggage: 8 Cortex-A53 cores with a frequency of up to 2.3 GHz and Mali-T880 MP2 video. I’m glad that they weren’t deprived of memory - the RAM capacity is 3 GB, while the internal storage is 32 GB with the ability to use microSD cards up to 256 GB. They did not change the battery capacity - still the same 2300 mAh, and this adds a note of disappointment. Of course, the improved energy efficiency of the chipset and the low screen resolution should help moderate battery consumption, but I don’t think we should expect outstanding battery life. The presence of a software solution for battery-friendly Qnovo Adaptive Charging and support for fast charging MediaTek PumpExpress 2.0 is noted. It is important to note that the model received a USB 2.0 connector in Type-C format. It is worth noting that only the Sony Xperia XA1 Dual SIM version will officially be released on the Russian market.

What used to be flagship is now quietly used in mid-range models. Here we are talking about the main camera, which migrated to the new Sony Xperia Z5 - a 23-megapixel 1/2.3-inch Exmor RS sensor with hybrid autofocus, a quick camera launch function from a button, a wide-angle lens with an f/2.0 aperture. It will be interesting to look at the optimization of the software and whether Sony was able to improve the quality in comparison with the same Z5.

Selfie lovers won't be disappointed by the 8-megapixel camera either. front camera, which is already familiar and does its job well. Well, you can see more detailed parameters of the Sony Xperia XA1 below:
