Instructions for connecting, solving various problems, errors, etc. And in this article we will look at connecting a router to a computer using network cable, which usually comes with the router. With a cable connection, everything is much simpler than with Wi-Fi. But despite this, sometimes problems arise with connecting to the router using a network cable (LAN).

Basically, of course, desktop computers that do not have a built-in Wi-Fi receiver are connected to the Internet using a cable. And if you buy it for a computer, then you can do without wires. I always advise connecting the router via cable to configure it, and of course update the firmware. There are different cases, maybe Wi-Fi does not work on a laptop, but you need to connect to the Internet, or the speed of the wireless network is low, here we need a network cable. A cable connection is always more stable than an air connection.

All we need is the network cable itself, which we will use to connect the computer to the router. This is normal twisted pair, with RJ-45 connectors on both sides. This cable should be included with your router. True, it's short there (depending on the router manufacturer). If you need a long cable, a computer store can make one for you. You can do it yourself, but you need a special tool. There are plenty of instructions on the Internet.

As a rule, you can connect 4 devices to the router via a network cable. You will most likely find 4 LAN connectors on your router. In some cases, the LAN connector can be 1 or 8. It doesn’t matter which Windows version installed on your computer. The instructions are suitable for Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 10. In Windows XP, everything is connected in exactly the same way, but the IP settings will be slightly different.

Connecting to a router using a network cable (LAN)

Everything is very simple. We take a network cable, connect one end to the router into one of the LAN connectors (they are signed LAN, or Home Network). And we connect the second end of the cable to the computer’s network card. It looks like this:

If you connect a laptop to the router, then we do everything exactly the same. One end of the cable to the router, and the other to the laptop’s network card:

That's all the connection is. If the router is turned on, the computer should immediately respond to connecting to the router. The connection status in the tray will change (bottom right corner).

If the Internet is connected to the router and it is already configured, then most likely the connection icon will look like this:

This means that everything is fine and the Internet is already working.

And if the router is not yet configured (you're just about to set it up), or there are some problems in the computer settings, then the connection status will be yellow exclamation point. And without internet access. The Internet on the computer will not work.

If the Internet from this router works fine on other devices, but on the computer that we connected without access to the Internet, then we need to check the IP and DNS settings for connecting via the local network.

Without access to the Internet when connected via cable

It may be that after connecting the Internet will not work. The connection will be “without Internet access”, or “Limited” (in Windows 8 and Windows 10). If the problem is not with the router (he distributes the Internet), then you need to check the settings on the computer itself.

Click right click mouse on the connection icon and select Network Control Center and shared access . In the new window select Change adapter settings.

What to do if the computer does not respond to connecting the network cable?

It may be that after connecting the cable to the computer, the connection status will not change, and there will be a computer with a red cross (no connection).

In this case, try the following:

  • Connect the network cable on the router to another LAN connector.
  • If possible, replace the network cable. It is possible that the problem is in the cable.
  • Install or update the network card driver.
  • Go to adapter management and check if the Local Area Connection adapter is enabled. Right-click on it and select enable.

As a rule, most problems arise when connecting to the router via a wireless network. Connecting via a network cable should not cause any difficulties. But, I have already encountered similar questions several times, and I decided to write a short instruction with a photo, in which I will tell you how to use LAN cable connect your computer (or laptop) to the router.

And what exactly is there to write about here? We took the cable, connected it to the router, then to the computer, and everything was ready. But still, it might be useful to someone. As a rule, modern routers have 4 LAN connectors. This means that you can connect 4 devices using a network cable. And they will all receive the Internet from the router, or work on the local network. We will need:

  • Router with a free LAN connector (yellow).
  • Network cable. A small cable is included with the router. But, if you need a longer cable, you can make it yourself. I wrote how to do this in the article. Or just go to a computer store and ask to crimp the network cable to the length you need.
  • Computer with network card (usually it is integrated into the motherboard). Well, or a laptop, netbook with an RJ-45 network connector.

Take our network cable, it looks like this (yours may be slightly different, I will enter a different length):

We connect one end of the cable to the yellow connector (LAN) of our router.

It doesn't matter which of the four connectors you connect the cable to.

Now we connect the other end of the cable to our computer or laptop.

Now look at the computer screen. If in the notification panel (bottom, right) you see this connection status (as in the screenshot below), then everything is fine. The Internet is already working.

But, in this way, it would seem in a simple way, problems may also arise. Now we will look at some of the most popular ones.

Problems connecting your computer to the router via a network cable

After connecting, the status on the notification panel may not change; you will see the computer crossed out with a red cross.

In this case, first of all you need to check the cable with which you connected the computer to the router. How to do it? You can, for example, take another cable, or a cable that carries the Internet directly to your computer. If this connection status changes (even if a yellow triangle appears), then the problem is in the cable. Perhaps something has come loose there. Just change it.

It's possible that LAN card just disabled. Let's check. Go to and find there LAN connection. If there is a status next to it Disabled, then right-click on this connection and select Turn on.

If such a connection as There is no local network connection at all, then most likely the driver is simply not installed on your network card. Download and install the driver. If there was a disc included with your computer (laptop), then most likely it has this driver.

Connected the cable, but the connection does not have access to the Internet

And this can happen. The problem looks like this:

But I'll tell you in a simple way. If other devices work normally from this router, and there is Internet on them, then most likely the problem is on the computer itself. It's clear:).

And as a rule, there is only one problem.

Go to again Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network Connections and right-click on Local Area Connection. Select properties. Then highlight "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)" and press the button again Properties.

Set to receive IP and DNS automatically and click OK.

But, we must not forget that, for example, there may be technical problems with the network card (maybe it just burned out) and other various reasons why a variety of problems may arise.

The moment another computer or laptop appears in the house, the question arises of how to organize Internet access for all devices. The way out of this situation is simple - (or as it is also called, a router). But due to ignorance of the basics of building local networks, connecting a router can be far from the easiest task. In order not to create unnecessary problems, you need to clearly understand what tasks it performs. The router creates an internal home local network and connects it to the Internet. Once you have installed and connected the router, it becomes an access point, DNS and DHCP server. So, now that we have understood the main functions and connectors of the router, we can begin connecting it. In order to connect you need to do the following:

  1. Connect the router to power.
  2. Connect the network cable from the Internet to the “WAN” connector, which is located on the back of the router.
  3. Connect the router to your computer or laptop using a network cable. For this you will need a small one. As a rule, such a cable comes with the router. Plug this cable into the network connector on your computer, as well as into one of the ports on the back of the router.

How to install a Wi-Fi router: step-by-step instructions

In order to connect and configure the router yourself, you need to do the following:

  1. The first thing they do to install the equipment is to connect all communications from the router to the PC and to the Internet signal transmission unit from the provider. To do this, insert an Internet cable into the connector called WAN, and insert the cable that comes with the router into one of the remaining ports; its other end is intended for the Ethernet connector on the back panel of the PC. After this, turn on the power to the device.
  2. Next move on to configuration software router. The equipment setup is not standard and may differ depending on the router model and connection settings from the provider. After these steps, the Internet connection should already be working. However, if the Internet speed is low or constant signal loss occurs, experts recommend choosing a specific channel (from 1 to 13), saving the settings. It is also worth taking care of the access password to the signal of the connected router. Otherwise, unauthorized connections are possible, which will also reduce traffic and make the router work slower.

After the router is connected and configured, all that remains is to connect the network card to your PC or laptop and use the device’s internet connection. On a laptop, you need to make sure that a special key is pressed that turns on Wi-Fi mode. If this operation is completed, you must connect the device to the network.

External wifi receivers

Such devices look very similar to a large flash drive: they are small gadgets with a USB plug at one end (see Fig. 1). In addition, they may have a small antenna to increase the “collected” signal.

This device for connecting a PC to a wireless network is quite inexpensive (can be purchased for 10-20 USD). After purchasing, all you have to do is connect it to your computer via USB, install it from the included driver disk, make the simplest settings and connect to wifi. We will consider all these operations in detail after we get acquainted with another type of wireless network adapters.

Internal (built-in) wifi receivers

Their name comes from the fact that they are built inside system unit PC. To connect to the motherboard, they use the PCI interface, through which they are connected to a special connector.

These devices differ little in price from external ones, and installing them on a computer also does not take much time and should not cause any particular difficulties.

So which type of adapter should you choose? External or internal?

  • The external one can be quickly disconnected and connected to another PC;

Router (router)

A wifi receiver can connect a computer to the network only if it can “reach” it. In other words, the signal source - the router - must be within range.

It receives a signal from the provider via an Ethernet cable, passes it through itself and “distributes” it to wireless devices (including a computer). Routers are more versatile and easier to use than access points. They allow you to simultaneously connect several gadgets (laptop, tablet, smartphone, PC...) to one network.

Connecting equipment

We move on to the promised description of the process of installing a Wi-Fi receiver for a desktop computer.

External wireless network adapter - installation and configuration

As an example, let’s take the TP-LINK TL-WN721N receiver model, which has proven itself to be a reliable receiver. It can be purchased for 13-18 USD, and it is ideal for Windows 7. In addition, it supports all types of data encryption, and it is possible to quickly create a connection. The maximum signal reception speed is 150 Mbit/sec.

Step 1

We take the device out of the box and carefully examine the package, which should include:

  • The receiver itself;
  • USB cable (can be connected through it and used as an extension cord when searching for a better signal);
  • Instructions in several languages;
  • Driver disk.

Step 2

We connect the adapter to the PC directly, or through an extension cord (it can strengthen the signal, acting as an additional antenna) to a USB port. Next, ignore any messages about the successful installation of device drivers. You need to install them yourself from a special disk that we found in the receiver box.

Step 3

Insert the driver disk into the computer, and then launch the installation wizard. In the program that opens, select our model and click “Install driver and utility” (see Fig. 5)

During the installation process, the following messages may appear (Fig. 7 and Fig. 8):

Step 4

Now that the adapter is ready to connect the Internet to your computer, all you have to do is click on that icon and select the appropriate wifi network.

Installing the Internal Wireless Network Adapter

Step 1

For example, let's take the TP-Link TL-WN751ND model (approximate price: $15).

We take the device out of the box and unscrew the antenna if it is connected to the module (Fig. 12), since with it it will not be possible to install it in the system unit.

Open the cover of the system unit and look for a slot for the wifi module on motherboard(one of the PCI slots through which you can connect a Wi-Fi receiver is usually located below, under sound card) (see Fig. 13)

Step 3

Settings internal map wifi is no different from setting up an external one: first you need to “install” the drivers, then find a network and connect your computer to it. We discussed these steps in detail in the previous chapter.

Installing and configuring the router

For example, let's look at the process on the TP-Link TL-WR841N model.

Step 1

First you need to connect the router to the computer through which it will be configured. Figure 16 shows the connectors through which the router is installed (blue - for power supply; red - for the Internet cable entering the apartment; green - for connecting to the main PC, from where the network will be managed).

Step 2

We go to the web interface of the router.

To do this, in the browser, in the address bar, enter the router’s IP address with the http:// prefix (as in Fig. 17). This “set” of numbers varies. It can be read where it will be indicated by the manufacturer in 99% of cases - on the back cover of the device.

Step 3

Enter the username/password pair. In 90% of cases this is admin/admin.

Step 4

Once in the settings, look for the “Network” tab, and in it “WAN”. Here you need to specify the network type. To determine which connection is suitable in your case, you can consult with your provider. Click “Save” and move on.

Step 5

We go to “MAC Clone” (in the same place, in “Network”) and click on “Clone MAC Address”, after which we save the changes again (save).

Step 6

We go to “Wireles” > “Wireless Settings”, where we enter all the values ​​as shown in the figure below. The only thing you can think of is the name of the network and indicate your real region. Don't forget to save.

Step 7


Now go to the “Security” tab. Indicate the encryption type and its algorithm as in the screenshot (you can simply fill in everything in the same way as in the figure above). And, most importantly, come up with your own password for the created network.

Save all changes again and complete the router installation by rebooting. To do this, look for the “System Tools” > “Reboot” tab, in which we click the only “reboot” button.

This completes the router setup process. Now you can connect wireless Internet to the computer on which you installed the wifi receiver. You need to log in through that PC to “ Available connections"(as stated above), select the created network and connect to it.
