How to put a leading comma on the keyboard? How to put an apostrophe on the keyboard in different languages and applications? How to put an apostrophe in English.

This article describes how to find an apostrophe on a keyboard in various layouts: Russian, English or Ukrainian. The easiest way to do this is in the last two: a separate key is provided for these purposes. That is, you can enter this character without changing the keyboard layout. But in Russian there is also a simple and accessible solution. You can use the ASCII code to enter it. It is all these options that will be described within the framework of this article.

English layout

The apostrophe on the keyboard with this layout is on the same key as the Russian letter “e”. It is not so rare in English, and such a decision is more than justified. There is no need to remember a combination of symbols and use it as needed. It is enough only when such a layout is active (there should be a combination “En” in the lower right corner of the screen on the taskbar), just press the Russian “e”, which is located in the central row next to “Enter”, and after that “'” will appear in the open document .

Ukrainian version

The situation is similar in the Ukrainian language. It can even be found in the word “computer”. In this case, it is located on the same key as the Russian letter “ё” or the English letter (symbol ~). This is the answer to where the apostrophe is on the Ukrainian keyboard. But such use is provided only in the latest versions of the Windows operating system, starting with Vista. But in the earlier ones you had to use the “Ctrl” combination and at the same time you need to press the Russian “e” twice. It works on the latest versions of the OS, but it is more convenient to use a separate key.

Universal method

In Russian, the apostrophe is extremely rare. These are usually words of foreign origin. For example, the legendary hero of Dumas is D’Artagnan. In this case, we can offer three options for solving this problem. In the Russian keyboard layout there is no apostrophe on the keyboard. Therefore, you can briefly switch to English or Ukrainian to enter one “’”, and then return back. But this is not entirely convenient. It's easier to use ASCII code. To do this, immediately hold down “Alt” and then enter the digital code. In this case it is 039. We consistently dial 039 and get an apostrophe. Another method will be described a little further.

What about WORD?

In this case, you can use the text editor menu. Go to the “Insert” tab and find the “Symbol” field on it. We make a single click with the left mouse button on it. In the window that opens, by moving (using the navigation keys with arrows) through the set of characters, we find “’” and insert it by pressing “Enter”. After that, close the window and everything is ready. This is the last way to type an apostrophe on the keyboard. Not entirely convenient, but if you need to enter “’” once, you can use it.

Results

Within the framework of this material, various ways of how to find an apostrophe on the keyboard were described. The easiest way to do this is in English or Ukrainian. But this can also be done in Russian. You just need to enter the ASCII code. In each individual case, it is better to use the key or combination of keys intended for this language. This allows you to significantly increase productivity. Therefore, it is better to know each option and use them as necessary.

How to put an apostrophe on the keyboard?

In order to put an apostrophe on the keyboard, for example, Zhanna DARK.

What I do for this is:

    • I switch to English mode and press the letter e.
    • You can also put an apostrophe, and by switching to English I press the letter, although the apostrophe is at some angle.
  • Putting an apostrophe on the keyboard is quite simple, although I have never seen such words in Russian. But in French there are plenty of words with an apostrophe. Take, for example, the hero Dumas D'Artagnan or the name of the African country Cote d'Ivoire.

To put such a sign just click Alt + 39 or in the English layout just press the letter E.

Just press the appropriate key. The apostrophe is the same as E, only on the English layout. Moreover, in lower case, you don’t even need to press shift.

I wanted to write an answer about the main character of the novel by Alexandre Dumas about the Three Musketeers and ran into a problem: there is no apostrophe and I can’t find it. With the help of hints I found an apostrophe on a Russian keyboard.

To do this, you don’t need to switch anywhere, just press the Alt key and without releasing this key on the numeric keyboard layout, which is located on the right side of the keyboard in the form of calculator buttons, I press two numbers 3 and 9. Now I will demonstrate what I did .

The role of D'Artagnan glorified Mikhail Boyarsky. As you can see, I no longer have problems with the apostrophe, but I can’t get the apostrophe through E.

When I need an apostrophe sign, I switch to the Latin keyboard layout: in it this sign is located next to the letter E. In other ways, you can get an apostrophe from text copied from the Internet or paste it from the Word character table.

My keyboard is generally Latin, and does not include Cyrillic. I just added both languages (Russian and Ukrainian), I type blindly, and I find all the squiggles at random. I can find an apostrophe in three ways:

    • In the Ukrainian layout, the apostrophe was found in the very top left button, where it is on the Latin layout, but with the Ukrainian it turns out. In the attached photo this button is marked with a red circle.
    • In the English layout, a key that corresponds to the letter in Russian uh. It is highlighted in the picture with a green circle.

In the Russian layout, without switching anywhere, we get an apostrophe with the key combination Alt + number 39 on the numeric keypad. Moreover, experienced people advise first pressing the NumLock button, but I succeeded both with the button pressed and without. This combination is shown in the illustration with blue circles, and the NumLock button is highlighted in pink, and on my keyboard it is located in a different place, to the right of the Backspace button, and I’ll emphasize once again - I don’t need it at all.

Let's look at the picture (photo of the keyboard was found on the Internet, this is not my keyboard):

  • An apostrophe is a comma at the top; this spelling sign is used in place of a missing letter, for example in the word: dArc, DArtagnan

You can put an apostrophe using the keyboard; you need to translate e into English and press the button where the Russian letter is -E-

An apostrophe, or a comma on top, can be placed in a simple way:

    • Switch to the English layout and press the key on which the Russian letter E is located.

Usually you need to put a comma on top to indicate soft consonant sounds or when writing, for example, French names or surnames. And so it turned out like this: D'Artagnan.

How to put a comma at the top on the keyboard?

A comma at the top, or an apostrophe, is an icon at the top of a letter, for example it looks like this.

Serves to indicate softness, instead of the letter ъ, etc.

In order to write this icon, press the ALT key on the keyboard and on the side panel of the keyboard with numbers, type the combination of numbers 039, we get.

I usually select the letter button, it's in the top right corner. To get an apostrophe - an icon similar to a comma, only at the top -, it is enough to translate the keyboard into Latin. By the way, I sometimes use it instead of a hard sign, out of habit.

To type on the keyboard, place the cursor on it, then hold down the Alt button and type the numbers 039 on the right side of the keyboard (calculator). However, this method is not suitable for laptops that do not have an additional department for working with numbers.

An apostrophe is a spelling sign that is not a letter, but is used to write words. The apostrophe is used in many languages, for example in English, French, Ukrainian and Belarusian. This character looks like a comma located above the line or a single closing parenthesis. In this material we will look at several ways to put an apostrophe on a computer or laptop keyboard.

Perhaps the simplest and most memorable way to insert put on a computer or laptop is to switch to the English keyboard layout. In the English layout, the apostrophe is located on the key with the Russian letter “E”. Therefore, in order to put an apostrophe, you just need to switch to English (key combination Alt-Shift or Ctrl-Shift), press the key with the letter “E” and return to the language with which you were working.

Due to the close location of the key with the letter “E” to the Shift key, this method is quite fast, but if you remember a more complex key combination, you can add an apostrophe without switching the keyboard layout.

Keyboard shortcuts for inserting an apostrophe

In order to place an apostrophe without switching the keyboard to the English layout, you can use several different key combinations. The simplest option is a combination Alt-39. In order to use this combination, you need to hold down the left Alt and type the number 39 on the block of additional keys (on the right side of the keyboard). In this case, Num Lock must be turned on.

Note that if you use Alt-39 when the cursor is positioned after a space, you will get an opening parenthesis. In this case, you need to repeat Alt-39 again so that the appropriate sign for the apostrophe appears. If you use this key combination after the letter, then this problem does not exist.

Another option is a keyboard shortcut Alt-0146. This combination works exactly the same way: hold down left Alt and type 0146 on the block of additional keys on the right side of the keyboard. Unlike the previous case, Alt-0146 always inserts a closed parenthesis, so there are fewer problems with it.

Another key combination that works similar to the previous one is - Alt-8217. It can also be used to add an apostrophe using the keyboard.

How to put an apostrophe without a keyboard

If necessary, you can add an apostrophe without using the keyboard. If you type text in Microsoft Word, you can use the “Character” function for this. Go to the "Insert" tab, click on the "Symbol" button and select the "More Symbols" option.

As a result, a window will open with a list of available symbols. Here you need to select the “Punctuation Marks” section, highlight the apostrophe and click on the “Insert” button. This will place an apostrophe at the point in the document where the cursor is located.

In the future, you will be able to insert an apostrophe simply using the "Symbol" button, since it will appear in the list of recently used characters.

An apostrophe is a comma-shaped superscript (’) used in writing in many languages around the world. In Russian, this symbol is in most cases used to display proper names of foreign origin and is placed after the initial elements d’, O’ and l’ (for example, Joan of Arc, O'Hara, d'Artagnan etc.). The apostrophe is also used when adding foreign words and names that are not transcribed into Russian: "Intel processor", “send by e-mail”. But it is impossible to imagine the Ukrainian, English, French, Serbian languages without this symbol: in some places it replaces vowels and consonants, in others it conveys the peculiarities of the sound of the subsequent letter, or is considered a full-fledged letter. But how to put an apostrophe on the keyboard? Let's find out!

For Windows

Method No. 1. English layout

If you are typing text on an English layout, then adding an apostrophe will be very easy for you. This symbol is located on the key with the letter "e"(next to “Enter”). Interestingly, Unicode recommends using the English single quotation mark or the Marr quotation mark. Such quotation marks are highly specialized signs and are used mainly in philology.

If you are typing text in Russian, then it is convenient to carry out such an operation only when the apostrophe is not required so often. What to do in this case:

  1. Switch the layout from Russian to English ( Alt+Shift or Ctrl + Shift);
  2. Press the letter "e" key. An apostrophe will appear in the required place;
  3. Switch the layout from English to Russian in the same way as indicated in step 1.

Remember that the display of the symbol depends on the selected font!

Method No. 2. Number pad

An apostrophe can be placed in Russian text without switching keyboards. To do this, use the numeric keypad:

Method No. 3. Single quotes

You can type an apostrophe on the Russian layout without switching languages using the same single quotes. In this case, you will also need to activate the number pad. To enter a character, use the combination Alt+0146. Don't forget to deactivate the numeric keypad for further work.

Method number 4. Insert-Symbol

If you are typing text in Word, you can find the apostrophe in special characters. To do this you need:

The apostrophe symbol will automatically appear in the list of previously used icons, so if you need the apostrophe again soon, it won’t be difficult to find it.

Method No. 5. Gravis

Gravis is a small stroke above the symbol (ò, è ) , appearing as a back accent mark. This icon is used in French, Italian, Portuguese, Norwegian, Lithuanian, Macedonian and other languages. In Russian, gravis is rarely used - mainly for translations of ancient books (in particular, the Bible). The gravis is the same in shape as the typographic keyboard symbol for the back apostrophe (`), which occupies an important place in computer science and engineering. There are two ways to print this character:

In fact, gravis has nothing to do with apostrophes, and therefore its use as a regular apostrophe (for example, O'Hara, D'Arc) is only allowed in informal writing.

For OS Mac

To type an apostrophe on Mac keyboards, use a keyboard shortcut Shift+Alt+P(typesetting language is Russian). An apostrophe should not be confused with a single quotation mark. Alt + ], which is typed in the English layout.

That's all. All you have to do is remember the most suitable and easiest option for you!
