What is the cache for, and how is it advisable to increase it?
Let's start with the fact that there are several types of cache. The system cache, as is already clear, is used for the needs of Windows, and the program cache is intended for the correct functioning of applications. Most often, users encounter the concept of a cache when working with Internet browsers. But what is it and what is it for? A cache, regardless of type, is a kind of storage of temporary files, the use of which increases the speed of loading a program or opening the same pages on the Internet. That is, the user deals with a certain space reserved on the hard drive that is used operating system or a separate application.
How to increase system cache or program cache, we are not considering it yet. First, let's decide whether it's worth doing this at all? On the one hand, there is nothing wrong with reserving more disk space for storing temporary files. Most ordinary users think so. But in reality, the cache can only be increased to a certain extent, since setting it too large will result in the system having to sort through too many objects to load before it finds the one it needs when performing some operation. Accordingly, the launch time of programs will be significantly reduced. In addition, you should pay attention that the cache is reserved on the hard drive, and the speed of accessing it can be significantly reduced, for example, when errors occur, file fragmentation, etc.
How to increase the system cache in Windows 7 or another system?
Now let's move on to changing the size of the reserved space. First, let's look at the Windows 7 system cache.
To automatically increase its size, you must use the computer properties menu and go to additional settings. In the “Advanced” tab, you need to check the option for optimizing the operation of background services and cache. It is believed that in this way it is possible to slightly reduce the load on RAM and speed up the launch of programs.
Paging File Options
Sometimes, along with increasing the cache size, some experts recommend performing additional actions with the so-called paging file, which is responsible for the operation and use of virtual memory - the same reserved volume on the hard drive, but used for unloading software components in case of insufficient RAM.
As with the system cache, you need to be extremely careful. With a small amount of RAM, the paging file can actually be increased slightly by setting it to a value that is 1.5-2 times higher than the default value determined or recommended by the system. But even here it should be remembered that if you install too much volume, you can achieve the opposite effect, when programs will prioritize accessing virtual memory rather than RAM. We repeat: the access speed to the hard drive is lower than to the RAM strips. Because of this, we experience slowdowns in programs at startup or during operation.
It is unofficially believed that with settings set at 8 GB or more, the paging file can be disabled altogether, which will in no way affect the performance of the system in a negative way. On the contrary, sometimes performance improvements can be achieved.
System cache settings in the system registry
Virtual memory or cache parameters can also be changed in system registry. Regarding the standard automated increase in system Windows cache 10, it is better to do it in this particular editor (regedit). Here you need to use the HKLM branch and go through the SYSTEM section and current control parameters to the MemoryManagement folder.
Here we are interested in two parameters: DisablePagingExecutive and LargeSystemCache, which can be assigned values of either zero (disable) or one (enable). The first key actually duplicates disabling virtual memory, and the second increases the system cache (the system will use not the default 8 MB, but all memory, except for the last 4 MB).
Cache settings in web browsers
Browsers also have cache-related settings. Accordingly, the reserved volume can be changed. To do this, use the appropriate settings. True, depending on the developer of the browser itself, they may be located in completely different sections.
For example, in old version"Opera" options are set in the history settings. The cache in browsers is designed to store information downloaded from the network. When you reopen a site you've already visited, your browser downloads most of the data from your computer's cache, resulting in faster page loading times and less bandwidth. Using standard means through the settings menu in Chrome, you cannot increase the cache size, since it is dynamic in this browser. If you still want to manually set this parameter, do the following:
- Click right click mouse on the browser shortcut on your desktop and select Properties.
- Go to the “Shortcut” tab and add the following in the “Object:” field, separated by a space: --disk-cache-dir="c:\chromeсache" --disk-cache-size=536870912, where 536870912 is the cache size in bytes (in in this case 512 MB).
- Click OK and restart your browser.

Browser caches are copies of web pages that the user has already viewed. When you try to view these pages again, the browser (or proxy server) will no longer request them from the web server, but will retrieve them from the cache. Standard means do not provide for increasing the cache size, so we use alternative way- adding parameters separated by a space --disk-cache-dir="с:\browserсache" --disk-cache-size=1073741824 in the shortcut for the executable file.
- C:\browserсache - cache folder, indicated in quotes, the path is chosen at your discretion;
- 1073741824 - cache size in bytes, in this case it is 1 GB.
Instructions for increasing the cache using an example Google browser Chrome:
1) Find the shortcut with which you launch the browser (for example, Chrome), right-click on it and click “ Properties».
2) Go to the tab Label and in the field An object after ...chrome.exe" put a space and enter the line --disk-cache-dir="C:\ChromeCache" --disk-cache-size=1073741824

Where is the data located?

Disk-cache-size=CACHE_SIZE, where CACHE_SIZE is a numeric indicator specified in bytes. Here it is necessary to proceed from the fact that there are 1024 bytes in one kilobyte, 1024 KB in MB, and 1024 MB in one GB. Accordingly, if we want to set the cache size to 1 GB, the parameter will take the following form (1024 cubed = 1073741824):
- Try launching the browser from the updated shortcut - now the cache for the web browser is set to the size that you calculated yourself.
Changing the cache size only applies to one shortcut.
Disk-cache-size=1073741824
Due to the increase in cache size, it may be necessary to move the cache. This is relevant for those users who use a small SSD in combination with an HDD, or simply want to free up a partition C by moving the folder to a user partition (usually this D). There is a separate command for this, which also fits into the shortcut properties, at the end of the line "An object" similar to how the cache size was set. Enter this, separated by a space:
Disk-cache-dir="PATH" , where "PATH"— the address where the folder will be located. For example, you need to move it to the section D, to the folder "temp\Yandex". The command looks like this:
