What screen resolution does the iPhone have? What is the screen resolution of the iPhone? What is the resolution of the iPhone 6 plus

Apple unveiled new ones at an event in San Francisco iPhone smartphones 6s and iPhone 6s Plus. The new items look the same as their predecessors from last year (except that a new, fourth color “rose gold” has appeared), but they are made from different materials and have received a number of new features.

Stronger and heavier

Let's start with the appearance. As expected, the design of the devices remained exactly the same as last year's iPhone 6 and iPhone 6s. Neither the screen size (4.7 inches for the younger model and 5.5 inches for the older model) nor its resolution (1334 by 750 and 1920 by 1080, respectively) have changed. The dimensions have increased, however, by fractions of a millimeter - the iPhone 6s is 0.1 mm wider than its predecessor, 0.2 mm longer and 0.2 mm thicker. But the weight (due to the new hardware, which is discussed below) has grown more significantly: from 129 to 143 grams for the iPhone 6s and from 172 to 192 grams for the iPhone 6s Plus.

At the same time, Apple has changed the materials from which its smartphones are made. A new alloy based on 7000 series aluminum alloyed with zinc and magnesium is used, making the body 60% stronger. The glass that protects the display is also, according to Apple, stronger than before thanks to a dual ionization process and is now “stronger than any other smartphone glass.”

For those who find the dark grey, silver and gold versions of the iPhone not glamorous enough, Apple has introduced a fourth option - rose gold. The panel around the screen is white, but the metal has a copper-pink tint.

New dimension

The main innovation of the new iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus, implemented in hardware and new iOS 9, became the 3D Touch system. It allows the device, using special capacitive sensors, to distinguish between the degrees of force applied to the screen, and programs to respond to different presses, making the use of the gadget more natural and intuitive.

For example, touching and lightly tapping one of the emails in your inbox will display a preview of the text. If you release your finger, the text you are viewing will “collapse” back into the header of the letter, but if you press harder, the letter will open in full screen. In addition, swiping forcefully from the edge of the screen allows you to switch between applications with one touch.

During the presentation, the system capabilities available to application developers were shown using an example new version Instagram. Press firmly on the application icon on home screen, you can call context menu, allowing you to immediately go to the desired section within the application. When viewing a grid of photo thumbnails, tapping lightly lets you quickly view a larger photo or video. The technology works in a similar way in other programs:

3D Touch technology is complemented by a new haptic feedback system. iPhone 6s responds to every gesture not only by performing the corresponding actions on the screen, but also by responding from a special Taptic Engine vibration motor. The force of the reaction corresponds to the force of pressing the display, so the user knows exactly what he is doing and intuitively understands what the result will be.

More powerful and “big-eyed”

The smartphone is powered by an integrated 64-bit A9 processor, which claims 70% faster computing performance and 90% faster graphics performance compared to the A8 chip used in the iPhone 6. Apple claims that the performance of the new system-on-chip is comparable to many processors installed in modern PCs. The chip has a built-in M9 coprocessor, which is responsible for motion monitoring.

The new iPhones received a camera with increased resolution (12 megapixels, the pixel size decreased from 1.5 to 1.22 nm), which, thanks to a number of innovations, provides significantly more high quality Pictures. The smartphone can now even shoot video in 4K resolution, although to see it in all its glory, you will need to buy a modern 4K TV.

A new feature will be available on iPhone 6s and 6s Plus - Live Photos. When it is activated, the user takes a photo as usual, but the smartphone saves not only the photo, but also a short video with sound, including a few seconds before and after pressing the shutter button. When viewing, pressing hard on a photo starts playing a mini-video and makes the photo “come to life.”

“Selfie” lovers are not forgotten either - frontal iPhone camera new generation 5-megapixel, and the screen backlight is used as a flash, lighting up for a moment in white with the highest possible brightness.

iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus will go on sale on September 25 in the US and several other countries around the world, and will be available in 130 countries before the New Year. The prices of the new iPhones remained the same - from $200 with a two-year carrier contract for a 16-gigabyte model, while last year's iPhone 6 fell in price by $100 and lost the most capacious, 128-gigabyte versions. Of the older models, the compact iPhone 5s with a 4-inch screen was also kept on sale. It will be available in the US for free if you sign a contract with a mobile operator.

Apple has set many trends, but setting fashion large screens For some reason I didn’t (or couldn’t) use smartphones. Others did it for her, proving that users are not even against large diagonals. Be that as it may, this year the Cupertino team delighted the public with two models at once: the iPhone 6 with a 4.7” panel and the iPhone 6 Plus with a 5.5” diagonal. In my opinion, a truly fresh and vibrant user experience can only be achieved with the help of big iPhone 6 Plus.

Honestly, I've been waiting for a phablet from Apple for a very long time. Among the “iPhones” I had iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, and starting with iPhone 5 I realized that 3.5-4” was sorely missing for me, after which I switched to Android with almost no regrets, where large screens have already become the norm. In this review, I will share my overall impressions of the iPhone 6 Plus and tell you something about personal experience transition from Android (and I had almost all the flagships of recent years with this OS) to iOS 8.

Design and equipment

The iPhone 6 Plus has the same box as the iPhone 6 (pictured). On the top there is an embossed scale image of the device, on the sides there is an apple and a name without indicating a specific version. The reverse side lists some functions, equipment, memory capacity, color, model and other information. Inside there is a needle for opening the nano-SIM tray, several pieces of paper, a couple of stickers in the form of the Apple logo, a Lightning cable, Charger(1A), EarPods headset. Three colors - dark gray, silver, golden.

Fans of the Apple brand love it when the new generation is strikingly different from the old. So if you have an iPhone 6, and especially an iPhone 6 Plus, then everyone who has the slightest knowledge of smartphones will notice this. By the way, I once walked with an iPhone 6 Plus and a Samsung at the same time Galaxy Note 4, which at that time had not yet gone on official sale. Guess which device they didn’t show any interest in at all (even after the phrase “this is a cool new laptop 4 with metal, it’s not out yet”), and which one was and remains the center of attention of others?

Above the screen there is a front 1.2-megapixel iSight camera, a speaker, sensors, and under the screen there is a round hardware key with a Touch ID fingerprint scanner and a sapphire coating. Left – switch silent mode, volume keys, on the right – the power button and a slot for a SIM card (nano format). There is nothing at the top, and at the bottom there is a Lightning connector, a microphone, an audio jack and eight holes for a loud and rich speaker. At the back is an 8-megapixel camera, accompanied by an additional microphone and a dual True Tone flash.

In a nutshell, then iPhone design I really like the 6/6 Plus. You can complain about the not-so-small height and high-placed buttons on the sides, but the quality of workmanship, materials, thickness and rounded shape reduce all negative thoughts to nothing. The stripes on the back do not cause me uncontrollable attacks of hate - they look neat and even stylish to some extent (a solid metal cover would look boring, and the antennas need to be routed somewhere).

The protruding camera may not look very neat, but in reality it is not annoying at all: the peephole does not scratch (thanks to the sapphire glass), and the phone practically does not wobble on the surface and does not jump when you press the screen. In addition, you will almost certainly use some kind of case or case, and with it the camera will be inside. But the main thing is the result. This “bulging camera” takes pictures very, very well. And if Apple engineers could embed the entire module into a 7.1 mm case, preserving all its capabilities, then they would do it. So I suggest enjoying the photos and videos you get with it, and not getting hung up on it.

iPhone 6 display Plus excellent even without the newfangled 2K. On a 5.5” diagonal with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels, the pixel density is 401 ppi and you will have to try hard to convince yourself that this value is not enough for comfortable use. The declared characteristics of the IPS panel are as follows: contrast – 1300:1, brightness – up to 500 cd/m2. According to technical description, the full sRGB color sensor uses dual-domain pixels to deliver accurate colors across a wider viewing angle. And, indeed, the iPhone 6 Plus has high-quality color reproduction (blacks are quite deep, whites are naturally white), and viewing angles are maximum with a slight inversion.

With the increase in screen size, the company optimized the software component. Firstly, there is not only a standard mode for displaying content (it fits a little more information), but also an enlarged mode, in which interface elements become larger (font, icons, indents). Secondly, with standard display, the iPhone 6 Plus has a horizontal mode when rotated - it works on tables and in a number of built-in applications (mail, calendar, stocks, reminders, notes, and so on). Thirdly, for ease of operation with one hand, you can lower all content to the middle of the screen. That is, if you need to reach some virtual key at the top of the display, then tap twice on Home button and take action. I can’t say that this implementation of “one-handedness” is very comfortable in everyday life, but some people use it. I believe that if a person buys a phablet, then he should be mentally prepared for the fact that he will have to use the gadget with both hands in many tasks. Even the 5.5” LG G3, for all its compactness, often requires a second hand.

I would like to highlight the fingerprint scanner separately. The fact that different companies are building it in is good, but it’s bad when the implementation leaves much to be desired. Fortunately, Apple did everything right the first time - the Touch ID sensor, which first debuted in the iPhone 5S, turned out to be very convenient and appropriate - it does not take up additional space, since it is integrated into the button, and works the first time with a light touch. And if you Samsung devices The scanner does not make you want to use it in everyday life due to the frequent ignoring of commands and the inconvenient unlocking process (you need to swipe your finger across the screen and button), while on the iPhone 6 Plus you don’t want to turn it off. The scanner is intended primarily for security, but I find it simplifies the process of purchasing and downloading content from App Store(without a scanner you need to constantly enter the password, but that’s all). Also, with the Touch ID scanner, unlocking your smartphone is simplified - you just press the Home button and at the same time the fingerprint is read. There is no need to do any additional manipulations, nor do you need to wait for reading. I pressed it and that’s it – it’s as simple as that. If we consider Android, then in its camp the Meizu MX4 Pro with the mTouch scanner came close to Touch ID - also under the screen and also responds to a simple touch from any angle.

Software

Even after giving up my iPhone with 4S, I didn’t stop interacting with the iOS ecosystem thanks to iPad tablets. However, the smartphone experience is still different from the tablet because the usage scenarios are different, so the iPhone 6 Plus was something really fresh for me. At the same time, the transition from Android to iOS 8 went smoothly, since OS in the process of their development they became noticeably closer. And the Android camp borrows Apple's ideas, and Apple spies on competitors from the neighboring camp. There is nothing wrong with the fact that successful moves are implemented by someone else - users benefit from this. Review of the final iOS versions 8 we have in a separate article, so I won’t go into the nuances, but I will highlight interesting points.

The lock screen displays the date, time, allows you to lower the top and bottom curtains, and launch the camera. When the music player is active, the locker is completely transformed: the cover, artist, song and album names, volume and scroll sliders, and track control keys are displayed on the screen.

The top curtain (“Notification Center”) in iOS 8 has two tabs: “Today” and “Notifications”. The second one is clear, but the first one deserves some explanation. In fact, Today contains widgets. The developers did not dare to place them on tables, but it’s not bad anyway. There are widgets (that is, mini-applications) from Apple, and there are also from third party developers– are in the App Store. I recommend downloading Weather Live: Reboot, iMonitor with information about memory capacity, connection speed and processor load, as well as Wdgts, in which I liked the photo frame and calendar. Of course, it’s not worth installing a bunch of everything, but I personally left a few widgets and use them regularly.

The bottom curtain (“Control Center”) is one of the most significant innovations in iOS over the past few years. It contains wireless shortcut keys, a brightness slider, music keys, AirDrop sharing, as well as keys for the flashlight, timer, calculator, and camera. Surprisingly, of the brands I know, only Vivo decided to copy such a convenient thing (a curtain that extends from below) (read the review of Vivo Xshot). Recent tiles appear when you double-click the Home button open source software with a clear display of the latest event. Above them - recent contacts(surprisingly, during all this time I never called contacts from there).

Multitasking in iOS, by the way, is implemented in a very interesting way. Contrary to misconceptions, programs can and do run in the background. To put it simply, iOS applications are divided by type (music players that play music in the background, social media, receiving regular notifications (this can be configured by the user), heavy toys, etc.) and can also function in several modes: in real multitasking mode, working in the background (up to 10 minutes), and in pause/deep sleep mode (the game is still will open at the folding point even after a week). However, the lack of RAM is still felt. Whatever one may say, 1 GB in a powerful phablet, even with the vaunted optimization of iOS, is not enough - and tabs in the browser are reloaded, and applications are often launched again (VKontakte is often guilty of this).

There are a lot of parameters available to configure. If you've owned an iPhone, then you're already aware of this. If not, then I suggest you look key settings in the screenshots.

An important innovation in iOS is support for third-party keyboards. If you're planning on switching from Android and are used to swiping gestures (like me), then you'll definitely like this new feature. Quite a few keyboards have already been added to the App Store, but I advise you to pay attention to TouchPal and Swype (both have Russian language and their own interesting features). I note that the password-login combination is entered only through the stock keyboard - in the name of security. I will also say that some applications may have problems. For example, on VKontakte you cannot add an attachment for a post on the wall, so you have to switch to stock. Not very convenient, but not fatal, and over time this will all go away with updates. But what is truly surprising is the impossibility of leaving a comment on a program in the App Store through a third-party keyboard - the text is simply not visible.

Making free internet calls to another iOS user via Facetime turned out to be a very pleasant experience. Not only is it “a freebie, sir,” but also the quality of voice transmission is amazing (as if the interlocutor is standing somewhere nearby, there is no booming or distortion). Free text communication through the iMessage service also only works in the Apple ecosystem, but you probably have a few iPhone friends. This is not a separate application - it is integrated into Messages, where SMS. The service itself will determine whether your interlocutor is an iOS user, so no unnecessary actions are required.

The Find iPhone service will help you locate your lost or stolen device. If you can’t get it back in the first few hours, then all data needs to be erased remotely and then turned on in lost mode. In this case, the iPhone is blocked and contact information is displayed on the display to contact the true owner. The device requires activation, that is, it cannot be used until you enter your Apple ID. There is no way to bypass this protection; the company’s technical support will not help. Therefore, the new owners will either contact you for a return, or they will just have to throw away the piece of hardware. In this regard, it is recommended to approach the purchase of phones second-hand with caution - there are frequent cases of Apple ID fraud, when the buyer is extorted money for a password, or simply sold a stolen “brick”.

The popularity of various fitness trackers and bracelets is growing. In iOS, all data is collected in Health. Without additional accessories, thanks to the M8 motion coprocessor, the smartphone can track distance (walking, running, cycling), count steps, calories.

The App Store is a real treasure trove of high-quality and necessary software. It’s probably not worth saying again that the priority platform for developers is still iOS. It has more children's applications, creative software, art programs, and games. Moreover, games are often released on iOS much earlier, and sometimes remain exclusive. Especially for new iPhone users, the store has several sections that are recommended for visiting first. These are “App Store for Beginners” and “Apps for iOS 8”. In general, the App Store is very well looked after, they regularly update selections, display home page really high-quality content (and you can feel the hand of the Russian team). All this makes you open the catalog again and again, follow reviews and download, download, download...

The music player is beautiful, fast and convenient. The sound thanks to the Cirrus Logic 338S1201 DAC is excellent - clean, with a noticeable volume reserve and sufficient bass. The standard player, however, has limited support for formats and cannot play popular lossless files in FLAC. If you have an extensive FLAC collection, you will have to spend some time transcoding to ALAC (Apple Lossless Audio Codec). Although MP3 320 sounds good on the iPhone 6 Plus. Files are added via iTunes. Not everyone will be able to understand the program right away, but when you understand the principle of operation, you will appreciate the resulting order of the music library, the correct tags, the correct covers and images of artists.

Photos are distributed over several time periods (years, months, days) and albums. Photos can be shared, copied, printed, etc. Of course, they can be edited. And the editor on iOS is one of the most convenient! On the right top corner located Magic wand, which sets the automatic parameters in the best possible way. The tools include rotation, cropping, filters, and three controls for highlight, color, and black and white. You can change them directly, or you can expand the items and get started fine tuning. After changes are made, the final version of the image is shown in the gallery, but the original is saved and the changes can be rolled back by clicking the “revert” button.

On versions of iPhone 6 and 6 Plus with 64 and 128 GB of memory, pre-installed useful packages iWork and iLife. They include applications for working with documents, spreadsheets and presentations (Pages, Numbers and Keynote), as well as programs for working with music, video and courses (GarageBand, iMovie and iTunes U). In one line I will mention other built-in software: video player, functional Safari browser, stocks, maps, podcasts, compass, voice recorder, calculator, weather, book, magazine, music and video stores iBooks, Kiosk and iTunes Store. By the way, returning to the issue of openness/closedness of the platform: I can download a doc file from the VKontakte program, edit it right there in Pages and send it by mail through a third-party mail client"Yandex Mail". I was assured that this was impossible on iOS, and now imagine the reaction of the person who was convinced of the opposite - this is how we destroy myths with an individual approach.

And finally, I would like to note the presence of a blacklist. You can prevent sound notifications from certain contacts, or you can completely block the subscriber. It’s a pity that not all smartphones from large companies have this functionality out of the box.

Camera

The iPhone 6 Plus uses an 8-megapixel camera with a 1/3” sensor, 1.5 micron pixel size, f/2.2 aperture, 5-lens optics and optical image stabilization. The lens is covered with sapphire crystal. The new generation of iPhone features Focus Pixels fast focusing technology and improved face detection. The camera interface is convenient and fast. On the left side switch to front camera, timer (3 and 10 seconds), HDR (auto, on, off), flash. On the right there is an item with 8 filters and a list of 6 modes: panorama, square (1x1), photo, video, slow and interval. When you touch the screen, a focus area appears and you can smoothly adjust the exposure by swiping on the sun icon. Focus Pixels technology is based on Apple's new image signal processor. With it, the sensor receives more information about the image, autofocus works much more efficiently. As a result, the camera instantly focuses on the subject - I have never seen it faster anywhere else. At the same time, the focus is rebuilt very naturally and it can be difficult to notice the process itself. Optical stabilization in iPhone 6 Plus uses the A8 processor, M8 motion coprocessor and gyroscope. Together they collect and analyze information about movement and conditions, and then set the lens parameters to compensate for hand shake as much as possible. As a result, it is almost impossible to get a blurry shot on the iPhone 6 Plus, not only during the day, but also at night.

Panoramas can have a maximum resolution of 43 MP. When shooting large photos Dynamic autoexposure works, guaranteeing optimal lighting throughout the entire canvas. The front camera, despite its 1.2 megapixels, produces better results than competitors with more high resolution.

If you are looking for yourself new phone or just an Apple fan who wants to learn more about the screen resolution of all iPhone models, then you have come to the right place.

What is the screen resolution of the iPhone?

The main part of any modern iPhone is the screen, and therefore, when purchasing, many users are interested in its resolution. If you pick up a phone, you want to know everything about it.

What is the resolution of the iPhone display?

If, in addition to resolution, you are also interested in screen sizes and other points, then you can go here How many inches does the iPhone have? - everything is described in detail here.

Screen resolution of the first generation iPhone, 3, 3GS

Although the screen sizes of the first phones from this manufacturer were not the largest, at that moment everyone went crazy for them. Such a thing as multitouch had just appeared and everyone was starting to get acquainted with it.

Color saturation and brightness did not change too noticeably on the initial models, but for that time this was enough to get a large number of fans.

The most top scores had the 3GS, which received the most saturated colors. There is also a grease-repellent coating for less staining.

Screen resolution for iPhone 4, 4S

Still the same multi-touch, but now the picture is significantly improved by increasing the resolution and pixels per inch. Everything takes on a completely different look.

conclusions

As I already said, here I wanted to show you exclusively all the information about the resolution of all generations of iPhones. Now you know what resolution each model has.

Samsung and Apple have been the undisputed leaders in the premium segment of the smartphone market for many years now, receiving a total of more than 100% of the profit. This means that the release of new flagships of these companies is a major event that has an impact on the entire industry.

Compare and Galaxy 6S difficult for a number of reasons, but direct comparison technical characteristics, functions and capabilities of smartphones allows us to indirectly determine the strengths and weaknesses of these devices.

Design

You can talk for quite a long time about the design features of each device, but by and large iPhone 6s And Galaxy 6S are very similar to each other. Not long ago, the South Korean manufacturer switched to using metal as the main body material and significantly updated the appearance of its flagship smartphones.
In turn, Apple traditionally did not make fundamental changes to the appearance of the iPhone with the “s” prefix - it is actually identical to the design of last year’s model.

Display

The main innovation iPhone 6s became a display with support for 3D Touch technology. Apple not only equipped the smartphone with a pressure-sensing processor and a Taptic Engine for haptic feedback, but also implemented a number of software functions for their practical use, and also released a corresponding API for third-party developers. In this case, the screen iPhone 6s, like the 2014 model, has a diagonal of 4.7 or 5.5 inches with a resolution of 1334 x 750 pixels (326 ppi) and 1920 x 1080 pixels (401 ppi), respectively.

Samsung Galaxy 6S equipped with a Quad-HD display with a resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels, which allows you to transmit images at 577 dpi. A more detailed comparison reveals the advantages and disadvantages of each screen, but in general both modules correspond to the status of flagship devices.

Camera

IN iPhone 6s And iPhone 6s Plus Apple developers installed with higher resolution matrices (12 megapixel main camera and 5 megapixel front camera). In addition, Apple smartphones can now shoot video in 4K quality, and a Retina Flash software function has been developed for selfies, replacing the flash. However, only the 5.5-inch model has optical image stabilization.
Main camera Galaxy 6S It has a 16-megapixel sensor and can also shoot 4K video at 30 frames per second. For a more detailed comparison of photomodules, you should wait for practical tests of the Apple flagship.

Performance

This year, Apple finally switched to 2GB of RAM, which is especially important for the 5.5-inch model iPhone 6s Plus. In addition, the evolution of proprietary processors continued - new smartphones received a 64-bit Apple A9 chip with an integrated M9 motion coprocessor. Korean flagship equipped with a tandem of two quad-core Exynos processors with clock frequency 1.5 and 2.2 GHz, as well as 3 gigabytes of RAM.

Despite the higher performance in numbers, the Samsung smartphone is inferior to its apple competitor in synthetic tests - in multi-core mode, the flagships showed approximately the same result - 4036 and 4107 points, and in single-core mode iPhone 6s turned out to be faster - 2248 points versus 1204. The reasons for this are the higher screen resolution of the Korean and software optimization of the American.

Results

In the table below you can notice a number of additional differences between iPhone 6s And Galaxy 6S, but in general, both smartphones are an example of the rational use of advanced technologies and fully meet the expectations of users.

It remains to add that the average cost iPhone 6s expected at 52 thousand rubles for a model with 16 GB of internal memory, while the price Galaxy 6S with 32 GB storage in this moment is about 36 thousand rubles.

Dr. Raymond M. Soneira, President of DisplayMate Technologies Corporation, wrote in which he conducted a detailed analysis of the characteristics and technologies used by Apple in the manufacture of displays for its new flagships in comparison with the iPhone 5 and existing competitors. Dr. Sauniera also conducted an incredible number of laboratory tests, the descriptions and results of which you can read in our translation.

Introduction

At all times, the key element of a successful smartphone has been an innovative and high-tech display, which has always been featured in the flagships of top manufacturers. Apple iPhones and iPads until recently remained at the top of technological progress: they very early introduced high-performance IPS LCDs that transmit 100% of the sRGB gamut and 24-bit color. Steve Jobs and Apple in general have always paid a lot of attention to the quality of displays in promoting their products.

Apple's most aggressive innovation was the iPhone 4's Retina display, which doubled the resolution and pixel density (ppi). It was a brilliant technical and marketing move that left its competitors far behind.

iPhone 4s, 5, 5s

But since then, iPhone display innovation has slowed and faded: in 2011, the iPhone 4s display remained the same; in 2012, the iPhone 5 display received an expansion of the sRGB color gamut to 100% and was increased to four inches; The iPhone 5s display in 2013 remained exactly the same.

Rivalry

While the development of innovations in the field Apple displays slowed down, other manufacturers were constantly working in this direction, trying to take the initiative. Amazon, Google, HTC, Huawei, LG and Samsung are now using better and more innovative displays in their products than Apple. Take displays for example. new iPads mini Retina, the color gamut of which has been reduced from 100 to 63% (compared to earlier Apple products), which is why it ranks far behind the best place among competitors.

iPhone 6

Now, in 2014, four years after the release of the innovative iPhone 4, it's nice to see improved displays again in the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. However, Apple has a lot to make up for over these four years, since competitors did not sit idly by and there are now a lot of smartphones on the market with Full HD LCD and OLED displays.

About sapphire

The use of sapphire in iPhone displays to provide scratch protection has been perhaps one of the most popular rumors. However, the likelihood of sapphire appearing in the iPhone 6 display was close to zero, since it would take at least a year to “break in” the technology. In addition, sapphire has disadvantages in addition to its high cost and difficulty in manufacturing. Its main problem is that it almost doubles the reflective properties, so the sapphire display will be very difficult to read in natural light. This is one of the reasons why the Apple Watch Sport Edition uses regular glass displays, since it will be used outdoors most of the time. Another reason is the high hardness of sapphire and, as a result, greater fragility and susceptibility to destruction from impacts, which are inevitable when playing sports.

Testing methodology and conclusions for each section

Research is based on comprehensive laboratory tests and extensive visual comparisons using reference test photos and patterns.

Display resolution and PPI

The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are equipped with Retina displays, which mean that when used from a normal distance, their pixels will be indistinguishable to the human eye with 100% vision. The iPhone 6 has an almost identical display to the iPhone 6 Plus, with the only difference being that it has a lower resolution and total number of pixels - it has only 1.0 MP versus 2.1 MP for the iPhone 6 Plus (and 2.1–3.7 MP like existing competitors) . This point should not be underestimated, since the total number of pixels is very important, especially for displaying photos and images with a resolution higher than the native resolution of the device. The same high-resolution (more native) photos look better on the iPhone 6 Plus, but even the same resolution photos look better on the larger iPhone 6 Plus. Most people are able to notice this difference and for them best choice there will be an iPhone 6 Plus.

Full sRGB gamut support and absolute color accuracy

It's good to see that the new iPhones have returned to 100% sRGB support after iPad mini Retina, released in 2013, it was reduced to 63%. Both iPhones very accurately reproduce the sRGB gamut, which is used to display the vast majority of digital content in cameras, HDTVs, the Internet and computers.

To ensure absolute color accuracy, you need an accurate saturation scale and white point. Both iPhone 6s have accurate saturation with a gamma of 2.22, but they have a slightly shifted white point (towards blue) with a color temperature of 7.300K, which remains a very good result and is better than the iPhone 5.

Screen brightness and natural light performance

Mobile displays often operate under relatively bright ambient light, which significantly reduces the colors and contrast of the image, degrading the quality and making it difficult to read. In such cases, two things are very important: the brightness of the display and its resistance to glare - the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus have both. Their displays deliver a brightness of over 550 cd/m², which is superior to any smartphone we've ever tested and significantly higher than the Full HD smartphones from the 2013 lineup.

The display reflectance of both iPhones is 4.6%, which is very close to the result we have ever measured in a Full HD smartphone with an LCD display.

Redundant Display Features

The displays of all the iPhones we tested had virtually identical brightness, contrast, gamma, saturation, and overall calibration specifications. This is very unusual and can only happen if detailed automated calibration is performed on each individual display in the factory.

But the most surprising thing is that all the characteristics exceed the declared ones by 10–13%. For the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, the display brightness is listed as 500 cd/m², but in reality it is 558 cd/m² for the iPhone 6 and 566 cd/m² for the iPhone 6 Plus. We have a “reserve” of 12%. The same goes for the stated contrast, Apple indicates 1:1400 for the iPhone 6 and 1:1300 for the iPhone 6 Plus, but in fact the real values are 1:1591 and 1:1451, respectively. That is about 13% margin in both models and the highest value we have ever measured in a mobile display.

Energy efficiency of displays

The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus have about the same power consumption as the iPhone 5, which is not surprising since all of their displays have low-temperature polycrystalline silicon boards, which are the most energy efficient currently available. They're 10% more efficient than any LCD we've ever tested, but the reason for this is... different densities pixels (PPI).

Compared to OLED displays, LCDs are generally more energy efficient for images where the content consists of white colors (such as displaying text). OLEDs, on the other hand, perform well when displaying mixed content because they are emissive and their power consumption depends on the average signal level (image colors), while LCD displays consume the same amount of power regardless of the signal level.

When displaying mixed content, including photos, videos, movies, with an average signal level (about 50%), the OLED display of the Galaxy Note 4 was 21% more efficient than the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. On the other hand, when displaying content with 100% signal strength ( White screen), the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus were the leaders, showing a 45% better result.

Viewing Angles

Even though smartphones are individual devices and only have one “viewer,” viewing angles of displays are still important since users often hold them at different angles. This is usually an angle of about 30 degrees (or more if the device is lying on a table).

Angles iPhone review 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are significantly better than the iPhone 5 and any LCD display we've ever tested. High contrast values and are especially important.

Visual tests

The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus provide very good, pleasing and accurate colors and image quality. Although the white point is (intentionally) slightly too high towards blue, absolute color accuracy and saturation are excellent.

iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus Final Score: Stunning Mobile Displays

The main goal of all DisplayMate Technologies tests is to identify the manufacturer and display technologies that are at the cutting edge. Based on extensive testing and in-depth analysis, we find out which manufacturers are leading, who are remaining behind, who are improving technology, and who are (unfortunately) slowing it down.

iPhone 6 Plus

Displays iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus have the best displays of any LCD smartphone we've ever tested. At the same time, the iPhone 6 Plus is the second smartphone (both LCD and OLED) in history (since 2006) whose display received “green” ratings (from “very good” to “excellent”) in all evaluated categories (for with the exception of the brightness drop when viewing angles change, which is typical for LCD displays). This in itself is an impressive achievement for a display.

iPhone 6 Plus equaled and broke the records of all LCD displays in the following parameters:

  • Best maximum brightness
  • Lowest reflectance
  • Highest contrast ratio
  • Better contrast in natural light
  • Color saturation and gamma accuracy
  • Image Contrast Accuracy
  • The smallest drop in brightness, contrast and color when viewing angles change

Where the iPhone 6 Plus display is good, but not perfect (it hasn't broken the record for LCD displays), is in resolution (1920x1080 vs. 2560x1440), PPI (401 vs. 538), and absolute color accuracy ( 3.1 JNCD vs 2.1 JNCD).

iPhone 6

The iPhone 6 display is almost identical to the iPhone 6 Plus in terms of features, but has fewer pixels (1.0 MP), which is significantly lower than others popular smartphones(from 2.1. to 3.7 MP). And although its display qualifies as a Retina display with a density of 326 ppi and a resolution of 1334×750, the picture looks much better on the same display of the iPhone 6 Plus, but with a higher resolution. At the same time, not only images with a higher resolution than the display, but those with a “native” resolution look better on the iPhone 6 Plus.

But be that as it may, the iPhone 6 has a very good display and most users will be happy with it. However, it's surprising that Apple chose "good" instead of "best" for it. Perhaps this was done deliberately to differentiate its two products in this way, or perhaps to increase profits... With a Full HD 1920x1080 display, the iPhone 6 would be a real king.

Comparison of LCD displays of iPhone 6 and iPhone 5 Plus, with OLED displays of Samsung Galaxy S5 and Note 4

LCD and OLED are two advanced mobile display technologies. They differ significantly from each other, but each of them has its own advantages.

Currently, the iPhone 6 Plus display is best LCD display, and the displays of the Galaxy S5 and Galaxy Note 4 are the best OLED displays. The iPhone 6 with a 4.7-inch display with a resolution of 1334 x 750 and a pixel density of 326 ppi is closest to the Galaxy S5 with a 5.2-inch display with 1920 x 1080 and a pixel density of 432 ppi. And the iPhone 6 Plus, with a 1920x1080 display and 401 ppi pixel density, matches the Galaxy Note 4 with a 5.7-inch 2560x1440 display with a pixel density of 518 ppi.

Advantages of LCD

  • High maximum brightness with high signal level
  • No change in brightness at different signal levels
  • Wide color gamut with quantum dots
  • Small drop in brightness when viewing angles change
  • High energy efficiency with high signal strength
  • Wider distribution around the world

Benefits of OLED

  • Lower reflectance
