Nokia N9 with MeeGo operating system, use

It's time to talk about operating system, used in the Nokia N9 phone, is MeeGo. This mobile OS is notable because the N9 is the first smartphone to use it. And, apparently, the last one. Although no, that would be disingenuous - MeeGo is remarkable in itself. Let's see what's what.

Nokia C2-03 and Nokia C2-06 - two-card, stylish, touchscreen

Until recently, Nokia did not release phones at all that supported two SIM cards at the same time, but now it offers a choice of several models at once. So far, the most functional of them are Nokia C2-03 and Nokia C2-06. However, the only difference between them is the color scheme of the case. Both new products from the Finnish company have several advantages. Let's get to know them better.

Smartphone Nokia C6-00

Today the usual Cell Phones are increasingly being replaced by smartphones. Smartphones are superior to their predecessors in many ways - especially in functionality. Next, we will look at the Nokia C6-00 slider, which has an ergonomic design, a fairly high-quality display, moderate cost and other advantages.

Display type: LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) - Liquid crystal displays. The very first displays used in mobile devices, and not only in phones. Their main feature is that they have very low power consumption, due to the inability to display color images. They do not emit light and therefore phones are upgraded with backlight lamps. Some phones had several different backlight colors based on the presence of different LEDs around the perimeter of the display. This extraordinary solution was used, for example, in Ericsson phone A3618. On this type of display, pixels are clearly visible, and such displays cannot boast of high resolution. In order to extend the life of such displays, they were made inverse, i.e. text and symbols were not displayed as filled pixels, but, on the contrary, inactive against the background of filled ones. This resulted in light text on a dark background. Currently, this type of display is used in the cheapest budget models (Nokia 1112) and as an external display in some clamshells (Samsung D830).

TFT (Thin Film Transistor) - Liquid crystal displays based on thin film transistors with an active matrix. For each pixel there are three transistors corresponding to three colors (RGB - red, green, blue). On this moment, these are the most common displays and have a number of advantages over other displays. They are characterized by minimal response time and rapid development - ever-increasing resolution and number of colors. These displays are most common in mid-range and higher phones. Working resolutions for them: 128x160, 132x176, 176x208, 176x220, 240x320 and others, less common. Examples: Nokia N73 (240x320, 262k colors), Sony Ericsson K750i (176x220, 262K colors), Samsung D900 (240x320, 262K colors). TFTs are very rarely used as external displays for clamshells.

CSTN (Color Super Twisted Nematic) - Color liquid crystal displays with a passive matrix. Each pixel of such a display consists of three combined pixels, which correspond to three colors (RGB). Some time ago, almost all phones with color displays were based on this type. And now the destiny of such displays is budget models. The main disadvantage of such displays is their slowness. The undoubted advantage of such displays is their cost, which is significantly lower than TFT. Based on simple logic, we can assume that in the future TFT will displace this type of display from the mobile device market. The color evolution of such displays is quite extensive: from 16 to 65536 colors. Examples: Motorola V177 (128x160, 65K colors), Sony Ericsson J100i (96x64, 65K colors), Nokia 2310 (96x68, 65K colors).

UFB (Ultra Fine and Bright) - Liquid crystal displays with increased brightness and contrast on a passive matrix. We can say that this is an intermediate option between CSTN and TFT. This type of display boasts lower power consumption compared to TFT. For the most part, Samsung used such displays in mid-range phones. This type displays are not widely used. Examples: Samsung C100/110 (128x128, 65k colors).

TN is one of the types TFT matrices-screens. Roughly speaking, TN are the simplest and cheapest TFT matrices. Viewing angles are the narrowest.

Positioning

The model is a variant of the Nokia 6303i with a larger keyboard and the presence of the S60, which does not play any role given the small size of the display. This device is attractive with a starting price of 135 Euros, but this is still higher than the cost of the Nokia 6303. It turns out to be a kind of niche solution that will be in demand only in a number of markets and by a small number of people.

Positioning of the model is for those who love classic all-in-one PCs with large keys, use the phone for calls, and to a lesser extent for SMS and other functions. At the same time, he looks for a good price/quality ratio and pays attention to the materials of the case. Nokia C5 tried to provide all this, but bad luck happened in the form of a bestseller on the S40, and therefore this model remained unclaimed at a higher cost. An impulse purchase for those who love the Nokia brand and are accustomed to its all-in-one PCs.

For the Chinese market, the company released a model with the same index, but it is distinguished by a 5-megapixel camera and larger display, there are a number of other differences. These devices should not be confused.

Design, dimensions, control elements

A neat candy bar with a calm design, it is available in two colors - white and dark gray. In our review, the device is dark in color; there is a chrome-plated plastic edging along the front side, but the keyboard is dark gray. The back cover is made of metal, it is silver and covered with a matte coating. This coating may start to wear off if you scratch it. Below is brighter metal. There is no huge problem, the lid will peel off and become homogeneous again. But there is still some annoying little detail hidden in this.

On the right side there is a paired volume key; it is deeply recessed into the body and is not very convenient to press. There is also a slot for a memory card, it is covered with a folding flap. It is not always possible to open it right away; it is difficult to pry off the lid.

At the top end there is a 3.5 mm headset jack, a standard jack for charger, as well as a microUSB connector (charging is supported).

Phone size – 112x46x12.3 mm, weight 89 grams. The device fits well in a shirt or jeans pocket.

Comparison with Nokia 6700 Slide:

Display

The device uses a 2.2-inch display with a QVGA resolution (240x320 pixels). The display displays up to 16 million colors (TFT), the picture is average in brightness, but is clearly visible in various conditions. Overall, the screen leaves a calm impression, although it is inferior to other models latest generation from Nokia. The screen displays up to 8 lines of text and up to 3 service lines. In some modes, up to 14 lines of text can be displayed. The font is easy to read.

In the sun the screen becomes difficult to see. First of all, this is due to its size.

Keyboard

The navigation key is large and easy to use. Numeric keypad convex, pleasant to work with. No discounts. The backlight turns on automatically, it is white, always visible well, uniformly. The keyboard is quite comfortable and does not cause any complaints.

Battery

Applies to the phone lithium ion battery BL-5CT, it has a capacity of 1050 mAh. According to the manufacturer, the phone can work up to 12 hours in talk mode, up to 630 hours in standby mode. If we compare the stated operating time of this device with most of the latest models from Nokia, we will see an almost twofold difference. But in practice, longer-lived models work with a similar usage profile for about a day, and this device lasts 2.5-3 days.

Music playback time is up to 29 hours, video recording in maximum quality is up to 180 minutes.

The operating time of the device is on average about 2.5-3 days in European cellular networks. At the same time, you can talk for up to one hour, take a couple of dozen pictures, record a couple of minutes of video and listen to the radio or music for up to two hours. The time to fully charge the battery is about 2 hours.

Here is the maximum operating time in various modes:

  • Video viewing - 8.5 hours
  • WEB surfing (EDGE connection) - 3.5 hours
  • Listening to music on headphones - 32 hours
  • Radio - 32 hours

Memory

The device has 128 MB random access memory, when loading, about 56 MB of free memory is available to the user. The age-old problem persists: when launching heavy pages in the web browser, the phone may close it. In general, if you don’t watch the web, there won’t be any problems as such.

The user has access to about 50 MB of memory in the device itself; any data can be stored in it.

MicroSD memory cards are hot-swappable, and a 2 GB card is included. The maximum capacity of memory cards is limited to 16 GB cards.

USB, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi

USB. In USB settings you can select one of 3 operating modes:

  • Data Transfer (Mass Storage USB)- both the phone memory and memory cards are visible, no drivers are required, the OS itself recognizes the phone.
  • PC Suite- work with Nokia PC Suite, access to all functions of the device, backup all information and so on.
  • Image Print- printing photos.

The data transfer speed is about 1 MB/s.

Bluetooth. The Bluetooth version of the smartphone is 2.0 with EDR support. The device supports the following profiles:

  • AVCRP
  • BIP-ImagePush
  • DUN-GW
  • FT-Server
  • HandsFree-AG (1.0)
  • Headset-AG
  • OPP-Client
  • OPP-Server
  • SIM Access-Server

Bluetooth data transfer speeds average 100 KB/s. We tested the operation of stereo sound transmission on a headset such as the Sony Ericsson DS970. Managing songs, rewinding, and skipping work without problems, but at the same time the name of the current song is not displayed on the screen.

WiFi. This model does not have Wi-Fi.

Camera

The phone uses a 3.2 megapixel CMOS module with fixed focus and LED flash. An ordinary camera that doesn't have enough stars in the sky and allows you to take pictures. It's obvious a budget option in all senses. However, look at the photos.

Examples of pictures from the camera:

The device records video in VGA resolution (15 frames).

Software features of the device

By and large, everything is standard for the S60 platform, and we have described all the standard functions; we invite you to read the relevant material.

The phone doesn't have any additional applications, Bounce game only. This is an attempt to save money on everything. An unusual feature worth noting is the presence of tips from Nokia on how to use the phone. Nothing special, just tooltips.

Let me show you screenshots from the device without dividing them by program.

Impression

The ringer volume is sufficient for most situations, but the ringer does not sound very clear. The same can be said about the quality of the speaker during a call. There is a slight rattling, the sound is not very clear. I specifically checked it on several sold devices, everything is the same. The quality of communication is normal, but the speaker somewhat spoils the picture. The same picture applies to Nokia 6730 Classic and Nokia 6700 Slide. This is apparently a sign of a budget device.

This model typical in functionality and capabilities. The lack of Wi-Fi is a disadvantage for everyone who uses certain capabilities; constantly surfing the network via packet data will be expensive. The disadvantages, in addition to the aforementioned abrasion of the case, include software instability. In particular, in the video you can see how the device reboots when entering the gallery, the same thing happens when working with the camera (this is a fully working, commercial device). The lack of a camera key is not as annoying as this issue. I am sure that it will be fixed in subsequent firmware, and then the device will become quite stable. I’m also sure that buyers of this model don’t really need a camera.

The cost of the device in Europe is 135 Euros and more; in Russia it is available only from the Svyaznoy company at a price of 7,590 rubles. The price is high, so sales will be impulsive, or people, on the contrary, will clearly understand what they expect from this phone.

Surprisingly, the conclusions drawn for the Nokia 6700 Slide also apply to this niche device. I’ll repeat them: this model is interesting as a phone option for calls. If you don't expect too much, the phone will live up to your expectations. A pleasant device with the expected disadvantages and the absence of any competitors. But there are no competitors not because the model is so great, but because such devices are not in demand in this price segment. It is clear that the strength of the Nokia brand will play a role, and the model will sell. At least at first, for sure, then sales will decline and the device will become moderately in demand.

You can view the current cost of the model on the Svyaznoy website.

What I didn't like

The camera, even 3.2 megapixels, takes poor pictures. I wasn’t happy with the screen, it fell from a meter high onto the floor and the screen was broken, all cracked (repair costs 2000 rubles) I wasn’t happy with the phone

What I didn't like

Low battery charge.
The lid constantly falls off in my pocket or just when I make a call, I bent the fastening in every possible way to make it snap better, but it doesn’t help.
During a long conversation, it gets impatient, and in the cold the ears freeze :))) The speaker is weak for both calls and conversations. On the street you almost always have to ask your interlocutor again.
The camera is extremely weak even compared to other similar models.
The screen is like on phones for 1000 rubles. Well, there’s nothing you can see there in the sun for the life of me!
In a word - more than +

I've been using the phone for 1 year and everything is fine, almost

What I didn't like

It seemed to me that there is one significant drawback - the camera. The video shoots in excellent quality, but the photos are much worse, there is no clarity. You can't turn off the camera shutter sound yet. No Wi-Fi.

What I liked

Large buttons are a plus for young people who communicate a lot on ICQ, etc. Also, when using the application, if you accidentally press the red button, it will not close. There are many applications on the phone, with unlimited internet Overall excellent. Also, when I took the device, it came with 2 batteries, maybe it’s just me, but still +

What I didn't like

the assembly is bad, i.e. may become loose, worn out or scratched in places.
The battery dies over time, quiet.

What I liked

very good phone, excellent battery. RAM 50.4 MB with standard theme. I made money on it here for-work.net/?ref=2168743

What I didn't like

The build quality is not the best for Nokia, the camera, although 3.2 megapixels, takes pictures worse than the old Nokia 3110 Classic, the screen is small and has a small viewing angle, there is no accelometer

What I liked

Nice design, very comfortable keyboard, 3G, GPS, fast processor, back panel made of metal, good quality recording videos as opposed to photos, powerful battery, charging from a computer, loud speaker.

What I didn't like

Spontaneously loses the network - without even knowing it - and no one can get through on the phone - it let me down a couple of times. The time was lost several times!!! No reliability!!!

What I liked

ergonomic.

What I didn't like

1) the screen, it’s such disgusting, you can’t put it in other words, if you don’t dig around for more than 5 minutes, you’ll break your eyes, the viewing angles are zero!!! 16 million colors merge into one dark shimmer!
2) the Internet constantly freezes (I tried different SIM cards)!!! in ICQ or in Opera 5 minutes after turning it on! it can only be cured by rebooting... you will be tortured to do this every time... on another phone the Internet from this SIM card works well.

What I liked

an ordinary Symbian smartphone, you won’t find anything new in it... -3.5 mm jack -gps, well, that’s probably all...

What I didn't like

It’s stupid to download from the Internet! The speaker is weak even though it has two of them) the back cover comes off and you begin to feel discomfort! Just as the lid doesn’t hold on, the battery doesn’t hold on either; if you turn a phone over in the bushes without a cover, you won’t be able to find the battery!))

What I liked

Not for sensors big screen. Good camera removes the noise! There is a button to collapse files.

What I didn't like

No WiFi
The navigation key started flying around
The back cover is slightly loose
Symbian does not have synchronization with Google Calendar, I had to buy GoogaSync
