Currently, the CHM format is widespread and is used not only for developing documentation, but also in e-books. Windows Applications support the CHM format, but, unfortunately, not all applications allow you to view it.
This problem can be solved by converting CHM files into a portable and widely used PDF format. This will make it easy to distribute CHM files ( technical documentation, e-books, manuals, etc.) among users who prefer to read texts on PDAs or smartphones, as well as among users of Macintosh computers or Linux OS.

pdf Portable Document Format File
The .pdf file format extension was developed by Adobe systems in 1993 as a means of presenting documents in a consistent manner across different platforms, hardware, operating systems, and applications. The format was not released as an open source document format until 2008, though minimal proprietary technologies still controlled by Adobe Systems exist in the format. Every .pdf document carries with it the necessary meta information required to properly reconstruct the text, fonts, and graphics used to produce the document. This ensures that documents will be viewed in exactly the same way the author intended regardless of the device used to open the document. From conception to date, Adobe Systems has continued to support the format adding features with every iteration of the standard including hardened algorithms for document encryption and privacy. Today, many freely available readers exist allowing you to open and view .pdf documents and create or convert other file formats such as .jpeg and .doc into .pdf documents.Announcement
CHM Document File Format
CHM (Microsoft Compiled HTML Help) files are proprietary files Microsoft. They are HTML pages used for online formatting and indexing navigation tools. CHM files are compressed and hosted using binary files, and are often used to host application documentation. The first release of the CHM format came with Windows 98 (subsequent OS versions also support this format). The main advantage of such files is compatibility with most web browsers (regardless of OS). However, the main disadvantage is the ability to launch certain applications using CHM files, which causes certain problems.
Technical information about CHM files
CHM files can be found in Windows Help files. Such files at one time became a replacement Microsoft files WinHelp. It is worth noting that both the table of contents and the HTML pages themselves in this format support 28 languages. It is possible to compress documents, merge them, and search through documents. In addition, on HTML pages you can place tags, images, text, hyperlinks, etc., which allows you to improve the quality of help files. Thanks to reverse engineering capabilities, CHM files are supported by many various programs to view documents. The LIT file extension is a modified version of CHM files (it's worth noting that the CHM format is also used e-books). Despite the lack of encoding support, Unicode is supported a large number of other encodings. Compression is performed using the LZX compression method. Unpacking is carried out using HTML Help Workshop and 7-Zip programs.
