Today I got my hands on the Lenovo S820, which is positioned as a device for the fair sex. In the CIS countries, the smartphone is available in two color palettes: white and red. The white version has a glossy finish, while the red version is made of a pleasant velvety matte material. Initially, the smartphone had several pre-installed applications specifically for women, but with the release latest versions firmware they were removed.

External appearance and ease of use
Thanks to the smoothed corners, the device fits comfortably in the hand, and the glossy body makes it pleasant to the touch. I did not evaluate the female structure myself and resorted to the help of representatives of the fair sex.
All subjects agreed that the smartphone was very cute and beautiful. The case looks monolithic and does not have any silver inserts. The front part is made in black and goes well with both white and red body colors.
To protect the glossy back cover from scratches, there is a small protrusion above the external speaker of the device, so that when the smartphone is lying on the table, it rests on both the camera bezel and that same protrusion. Unfortunately, the screen is not protected by Gorilla Glass. The resistance of the case to scratches cannot be discussed at all, because the vast majority of girls handle their phones very carefully and carefully.
The touch buttons on the front panel are made in silver, but, unfortunately, are not backlit.
As with any other Lenovo smartphone, the lock button here is located on the top, which is not very convenient. With a screen diagonal of 4.7 inches, only a giant and a pianist with 40 years of experience can reach it with his index finger without grabbing the smartphone. A more convenient location for the lock button is the space under the volume buttons on the right side of the device. The volume rocker has quite a lot of play with the body, so it looks very flimsy and dangles in different directions.
The latch of the back cover is not very convenient and you have to apply quite a lot of force when removing it.
Screen
Lenovo S820 is equipped with a 4.7-inch IPS display, built using OGS technology (without an air gap) with a resolution of 720x1280 pixels. At maximum viewing angles, the picture looks great, colors do not fade or change. The difference between the upper and lower brightness levels of the screen is quite large, which allows you not to “burn out” your eyes when reading from the screen at night and to use the device in bright sunny weather. In addition, there is a light sensor that will take care of the required brightness level.
The picture is quite rich, but there is clearly something wrong with the color balance. Compared to other devices, the screen appears to be slightly covered with a yellow-brown veil.
System
Immediately after the first launch, the smartphone offered an over-the-air firmware update. The S820 runs Android 4.2.1. Lenovo Launcher 2.0 is used as the shell. The shell is quite functional; you can choose themes, hide unnecessary icons from the menu, or change the sorting order of shortcuts.
Almost all standard applications that come in stock Android firmware, have been replaced by Lenovo's own applications, even the settings section has been redesigned and changed.
Changed interface of gallery and camera applications
The gallery and camera interface were so modified that the developers felt it necessary to rename them “Super Gallery” and “Super Camera”, respectively. In general, the modified applications do not have very advanced functionality and clearly will not play a big role for the buyer when choosing a smartphone. Separately, I would like to highlight the LenovoPower utility, which allows you to optimize the power consumption of your smartphone depending on the situation. There are 3 different energy saving modes available, which differ in a certain set of rules for the behavior of the smartphone. For example, in maximum battery saving mode, the backlight brightness will be reduced, and when the screen is locked, the Wi-Fi module will be disabled, Mobile Internet and all background applications will be closed.
Of course, the utility allows the user to create his own mode with manual setting all rules for communication modules and actions when the screen is locked. There is also a function to turn the smartphone on and off according to a schedule. The program contains general tips on improving the operating time of your smartphone and general information about battery use.
The dialer and phone book are well adapted to work with two SIM cards and allow you to exclude calls from the wrong card.
Performance
Lenovo S820 is equipped with a quad-core MediaTek MT6589W processor with clock frequency 1.2 GHz and 1 GB random access memory. PowerVR SGX 544MP GPU shows enough good performance in various tests and allows you to comfortably play top games.
For testing, as usual, we took Real Racing 3 and GTA 3. The result turned out to be more than satisfactory, not a single slowdown was noticed.

The smartphone's operation in cellular networks or when using Bluetooth did not raise any complaints. It is also worth noting the fact that the FM receiver can work without connecting headphones.
Bottom line
Lenovo S820 was another proof that Chinese smartphone manufacturers have stepped far forward. In addition to a nice price, now you also get an excellent design coupled with good performance, which could not be said about smartphones that came out a year ago.Lenovo really did it stylish smartphone, which will appeal to many girls. Autonomy of work on good level, with a light load the charge will be enough for 2-2.5 days of operation. It is worth noting that with a screen diagonal of 4.7 inches, the device has very good dimensions and can hardly be called a shovel. Using built-in applications developed by Lenovo left only positive emotions.

Since the previous generation of phones, Lenovo has moved away from using the standard Android OS design and is actively developing its own design. In general, they are doing very well at this. But there are pros and cons:
- Light colors of design.
- Tab with basic settings.
- Possibility of installation individual melodies calls and SMS to different SIMs.
- The ability to change design themes (Settings menu, notification curtains, boot animations, etc.) - available only in Chinese firmware.
- Removed the battery consumption statistics item in the settings.
- Lack of full theming in ROW firmware.
Why develop ROW firmware from scratch when you can only do a small modification and localization of the Chinese one? Chinese firmware look much more stable and functional.

The IdeaFriend application (calls, contacts, SMS) is “crude”: entering SMS in portrait mode does not work, a convenient notification with SMS text and the ability to quickly respond is displayed only when the screen is unlocked, the design of the call screen is poorly thought out (the font for displaying the caller is too large with a stupid scroll from -for which it is not always clear who it is).
Graphics with letters on the phone buttons, completely inconsistent with the theme of the design, migrate from phone to phone for a long time (Is it really so difficult to draw localized buttons in the same style as the English version of the design?).

The phone successfully connects to routers and access points: TP-Link WR1043ND, D-Link DWL-3260AP, HP ProCurve MSM320. No additional dances with a tambourine, changing channels on the router or other settings are required (the bug with channels 12 and 13 not working, I think, will be fixed in the next firmware versions).
The speed of data exchange between a computer and a phone within one router (the computer is connected by cable, LAN card Realtek RTL8168C (1Gbps), Win7x64SP1): reception to phone ~4.7 Mb/sec, transmission ~8.1 Mb/sec.
Speed Test over WiFi on an external 12 Mbit channel shows full speed.
FM radio works without headphones; more than 20 stations were found in the city center, even where a stationary Chinese FM receiver does not receive reception.
The FM transmitter does not work, the additional antenna is presumably missing.

Advantages:
Screen, weight, battery, radio without headphones and much more. Very cool screen cover and good value prices and functionality of the phone.
Flaws:
The power button is small and inconvenient; the speaker behind the case is easily blocked. The camera is not bad, but I expected more High Quality. There are no arrows on the keyboard, HTC had an excellent track sensor, however, no one has it on current models. It’s a pity, because this is an indispensable thing for editing text. The display of names in contacts is inconvenient: if a lot has been written, you don’t see all the information; If there are two numbers recorded for a contact, then it is inconvenient to select the second number. The keyboard slows down from time to time, it is not very clear to touch it with your fingers, or you should buy a stylus.
Before this there was the first HTC Desire, where the screen is an inch smaller, but the keyboard and touchpad are much more convenient. Enough high level Minimum screen brightness - it hurts your eyes in the dark. WIFI is not that powerful, HTC had a stronger, weak vibration signal.
Accelerometer(or G-sensor) - sensor of the device’s position in space. As a main function, the accelerometer is used to automatically change the orientation of the image on the display (vertical or horizontal). Also, the G-sensor is used as a pedometer; it can control various functions of the device by turning or shaking.
Gyroscope- a sensor that measures rotation angles relative to a fixed coordinate system. Capable of measuring rotation angles in several planes simultaneously. A gyroscope together with an accelerometer allows you to accurately determine the position of the device in space. Devices that use only accelerometers have lower measurement accuracy, especially when moving quickly. Also, the capabilities of the gyroscope can be used in modern games for mobile devices.
Light sensor- a sensor that sets the optimal brightness and contrast values for a given light level. The presence of a sensor allows you to increase the battery life of the device.
Proximity sensor- a sensor that detects when the device is close to your face during a call, turns off the backlight and locks the screen, preventing accidental clicks. The presence of a sensor allows you to increase the battery life of the device.

Design and ergonomics
Anyone who has even one eye on the mobile device market will find that the Lenovo S820 is the spitting image HTC One X, and it's worth noting that he won't be wrong. The Lenovo S820 is indeed very similar to the One X, with the only significant difference being that the body of the Taiwanese smartphone is made of matte polycarbonate, while the body of the S820 is completely glossy. On the one hand, such similarity in design is bad, but on the other hand, a well-replicated beautiful appearance is much better than the original, but bad one.
Case materials – glossy plastic. In this regard, the smartphone is very slippery and tends to slip out of your hand.
Lenovo S820 is sold in three colors: white, black and red.
As for the build, it's not bad. The only complaints that arise are the creaking of the case if you press a little from above between the power key and the headphone jack. Otherwise, there are no special comments about the build quality.
On the front panel there is a convex curved glass and a large 4.7-inch screen. Above the screen is the Lenovo logo, speaker grille, front camera and a set of sensors.
Below the screen there are three touch buttons: menu, home and back. The layout of the touch keys is exactly the same as on Samsung smartphones. The microphone hole is neatly hidden at the bottom of the smartphone - right next to the glass surface of the screen.
On top are the power key and a standard 3.5 mm headphone jack.
On the right side there are volume keys, and on the bottom side in the center there is a slot for Micro SD. The left side is completely empty.
On the back cover there is a camera with a protruding silver edging “metallic” and a flash. This shape will ensure the safety of the camera and will allow you to place the smartphone with the camera facing down without unnecessary worries. Below that is the speaker grille, which has a small protrusion that should reduce sound muffling when the phone is placed face up.
The unlock button is located on the top, which is not very convenient, given the considerable size of the screen, so to unlock the device you must change your grip and reach with your index finger to the upper right end.
It is also worth noting the very beautiful LED indicator at the bottom of the smartphone. It looks like a narrow stripe of colored dots. Although in practice such an indicator is less noticeable than the usual round version.
Characteristics
The smartphone is equipped with decent hardware at a very affordable price. The 1.2 GHz MTK 6589W quad-core processor and PowerVR SGX544 graphics card ensure smooth operation of the interface and the ability to play 3D games such as Real Racing 3 or Asphalt 8 at medium settings.
The device has 1 GB of RAM and 4 GB of flash memory, of which only 1.5 GB is available to the user. And although the smartphone has a slot for memory cards, the biggest drawback of the Lenovo S820 is the small amount of built-in memory on which all games and applications will be installed. If you only install applications and light arcade games, then you will have enough memory. But if you want to install some heavy game, such as Real Racing 3 or Modern Combat 4, then the memory will immediately become sorely lacking, or the games will not fit at all. Of course, you can transfer applications to a memory card, but you will not be able to transfer the cache from games.

Screen
The Lenovo S820 has a good 4.7” IPS screen with a resolution of 1280 by 720 pixels. The viewing angles are good and, judging by the data on the official website, they are 178°. The screen is nice and high quality, although it can't compare to current flagships. And the curved glass at the edges allows you to conveniently swipe from the edges of the screen, which is a big advantage, given the tendency to increasingly use gestures instead of the usual taps.
Connection
The smartphone supports simultaneous operation with two SIM cards. In active mode (for receiving calls), only one can be used. Only the first SIM card slot supports 3G networks.
The signal reception level is no worse than on other smartphones with support for a single SIM card.
Sound
The sound from the speakers cannot be praised, but there is no reason to complain about it either. The volume is quite consistent with the level of most smartphones.
Battery
A replaceable lithium-polymer battery with a capacity of 2000 mAh ensures operation for two days in economical use mode and daylight hours with active use of the Internet, calls and multimedia.
The Lenovo S820 has a special utility that allows you to adjust the operating time by disabling or enabling various sensors and services. In it you can set a decrease in power consumption when the charge is low, network activity when the screen is locked (you can block some applications from accessing the Internet), uploading background processes when locking the screen, reduce power consumption in standby mode and so on.
This utility also has four work profiles: maximum long, long, optimal and custom. In the longest mode, airplane mode is activated and all sensors are turned off. In the “long” mode, data transmission and many sensors are turned off, but the ability to make and receive calls remains. In Custom mode, you can select features to be turned on or off.
Using this utility, you can calibrate the battery and view the battery status: charge, temperature and voltage.
Here you can also view data on the use of the phone and the approximate remaining operating time in different conditions: calls, music, video, networks, data and standby.

Shell and software part
The smartphone has a custom shell from Lenovo, which is a bit reminiscent of MIUI and has absorbed many advantages and ideas from other manufacturers.
The lock screen is very similar to the standard one from Android 4.2, but pop-up notifications about missed SMS or calls appear on it. If you pull the icon towards the lock ring, the corresponding application will open (SMS or call history.)
The desktop is decorated with Lenovo Launcher. Here you can customize icons, animations, effects, desktop grid size, icon density, and much more. It is also possible to change desktop themes. Very nice features for a standard desktop.
I liked the ability to set video wallpaper. This is another way to make your smartphone unique.
As for the application menu, here Lenovo has slightly spoiled the standard “Google experience”. Only icons remain in the application menu, but widgets and icons need to be added only from the desktop through the add widgets menu. This method is much longer than the usual dragging and dropping of icons.

Applications for dialing numbers, contacts, SMS also from Lenovo and their key feature– support for dual SIM cards. The dialer and SMS application have two call (send) buttons. For each SIM card there is a button. But in the settings you can select the default SIM card for various operations: calls, SMS, data transfer.
The notification panel is made in an old and convenient style. There are no tiles here. At the top there are three groups of switches, which are scrolled through by swiping. The first group is responsible for the ease of use of the smartphone, the second – sensors and communications, the third – volume modes.
The settings are also divided into three tabs. The first is general parameters. Here you can turn on Wi-Fi, mobile Internet, Bluetooth, change brightness, wallpaper, themes, volume and ringtones and SMS for each SIM card. These are the settings that are used most often.
The second tab contains settings for sensors and gestures. This includes gestures such as automatically increasing and decreasing the volume in the pocket and outside the pocket, respectively. Here you can calibrate the sensor and enable smart answering - answering a call when brought to your ear (hello Samsung). In the notification settings, you can select those applications that are allowed to show notifications, and in the indicator settings, you can select the actions after which it will light up.
The last tab is standard Android settings, all combined into a heap.

Perhaps it's worth noting good app gallery, which can display pictures in four display ways: chronologically, by people, landscapes and folders. If sorting by people and landscapes does not always work correctly and conveniently, then chronological sorting is very convenient.
Well, as a bonus, we added the ability to view and create GIFs and collages to the gallery. GIFs are created by filming a short video, processing and adjusting the animation speed.
