Meizu pro 6 plus black.

The Chinese company MEIZU, one of the leaders in the budget segment, has recently produced a record number of a wide variety of inexpensive smartphones with alphanumeric names. Despite such a stream of new products, the PRO 6 Plus, announced on November 30, is not in danger of getting lost in the crowd: it received the honorary status of a new flagship, incorporating the most advanced MEIZU technologies. And not only.

The PRO line traces its lineage back to the affordable music flagship MEIZU MX4 PRO (2014). The success of the new product inspired the company to make a separate series of devices tailored to music. In 2015, the legendary MEIZU PRO 5 went on sale. In 2016, due to numerous requests from users tired of spade-shaped gadgets, they released the compact and powerful PRO 6. However, the baby did not live up to the role of a full-fledged flagship, so it was replaced at the “post” by a large and luxurious PRO 6 Plus.

Equipment

A neat square box made of matte black plastic with laconic PRO 6 Plus embossing reliably protects the contents: inside we have a phone, an envelope with documents and a key for changing Sim, as well as Charger. Under the envelope there is an empty compartment for an audio headset with a mocking inscription: “Headphones are not included.” In short, severe asceticism.

Appearance

The first thought that arises when you see MEIZU PRO 6 Plus: What are these “Apple” motifs? These characteristically rounded corners, thin edges and a single control button (well, at least not round, but elongated) hint at slight plagiarism. Okay, let's not blame the Chinese - they were guided by design gurus. And the “geography” of the rear panel varies quite a lot.

The sleek 7.3mm body is made of brushed aluminum with thin antenna lines at the top and bottom. We got the golden color option: a pleasant and non-vulgar shade. Above and below the screen there are 14 mm functional panels, the margin on the sides is only 2 mm. At the top center is a long earpiece that glitters gold. On the left is a small light indicator, on the right is a light sensor and front-camera.

Directly below the screen is an oblong control button with a thin gold edge. It is worth noting that the only control key for a Chinese Android is a rarity. (We are more used to the “triptych”). Officially, it is called the “mTouch button” and performs several functions at once depending on the force of pressing: “back”, “home” or “lock”. It also has a built-in fingerprint sensor. An interesting and ergonomic solution that allows you to avoid unaesthetic “crowdling” on the rear panel.

At the top of the smartphone there is only the top microphone point. On the left, on top, there is a SIM card tray; there is no microSD tray. On the right is the volume control and the power button. On the bottom edge, from left to right: a standard audio jack, a bottom microphone, USB Type C and an external speaker. The general fashion for removing the “hole” for headphones did not affect this model: otherwise it would have been a crappy music phone.

On the back panel there is a beautifully framed “halo” camera, and under it, perhaps, the main “highlight” of the PRO 6 Plus design, which distinguishes it from other models, is the ring flash. Below, in gray on gold, MEIZU is written large. The phone fits well in the hand for its size, but because of its “weightless” design, you’re always afraid that the device will break if you squeeze your fingers too hard.

Display

Even with a 5.7” screen, MEIZU PRO 6 PLUS tried to achieve maximum compactness using very narrow frames: almost a record for this moment. In a good way, this smartphone can probably be proud of best display in its segment: Super Amoled matrix with a resolution of 2560x1440 pixels (518 PPI) produces a 2K image. Protected by durable curved glass at the edges with a 2.5D effect. The colors are bright, clear and rich.

PRO 6 PLUS has amazing user care. It has an "Eye Protection Mode" that helps reduce annoying blue light when needed (like reading). It is possible to change the color temperature of the screen.

The display recognizes up to 10 simultaneous touches and supports the 3D Press function, which recognizes the force of pressing the screen and displays context menu applications without launching them. This function can also be customized.

Included in the set useful feature Always On Display AOD, - it permanently displays important information but doesn't eat much energy.

Camera

Main camera
MEIZU PRO 6 Plus produces very decent shooting quality thanks to the latest SONY IMX386 camera module: 6 lenses, resolution - 12 MP, aperture - f.2/0. Previously, a similar one was installed in the MEIZU MX6, but it was this model that added an optical image stabilization system, fast phase laser focusing and the ability to shoot video in 4K.

A ring flash of 10 LEDs of different tones gives a good effect, but the main advantage is still its unusual appearance. This is what can be considered the “calling card” of PRO 6 Plus.

Having resolution indicators that are not the highest for a flagship model, SONY’s brainchild “takes the cake” with properly configured “brains”. The phone almost never misses when selecting the exposure in automatic mode. It is still better to achieve the best results at night in manual mode.

The focus is fast and works equally well both in landscape photography and in Macro mode: without any problems you can shoot a subject from a distance of about 5 cm.

The setup menu is suitable for both beginners and experienced amateur photographers. You can rely on automation, or you can painstakingly select the exposure according to all the canons of photography. In addition to classic shots, you can take long panoramas and GIFs, regular videos and slow-motion. For complete happiness - a set of built-in filters.

The mysterious Beauty mode is a godsend for taking perfect portraits. The painstaking Chinese anticipated Photoshop, making it possible to correct flaws in appearance not after the shutter click, but before! Cunning software can enlarge your eyes, make your face wider, or, which is important on the eve of the winter holidays, hide skin imperfections or (Asians have a thing for this) make the skin several tones lighter!

The front camera compensates for its weak resolution of 5 megapixels with special filters and image processing algorithms from ArcSoft: selfie lovers will be able to work their magic on themselves in the same “Beauty” mode.

You can switch between cameras using the menu icon or a special gesture. True, at first the camera rotates when you don’t expect it...

The built-in photo editor has a fairly wide range of capabilities: from basic cropping, adjusting exposure and applying filters to the ability to use a set of creative tools. The unusual “Mosaic” mode allows you to turn the selected part of the image into artistically “pixelated” areas.

The software distinguishes portraits from other photographs and offers to apply makeup and correct imperfections in appearance. Girls can be happy - MEIZU takes care of them like no one else!

OS and interface

The craftsmen from MEIZU were not too lazy to develop their own version of the shell for Android called Flyme: it has its own redrawn style of screen design and icons, many unique control functions and unusual interface elements, a developed gesture control system and even its own browser. What can we say, there is also a letter layout.

Specifically, our smartphone got Flyme 5.2.7 OG, in which 6.0.1 Marshmallow is wrapped
Pre-installed programs there is a basic minimum, a separate “Tools” folder (for some reason on the screen the word “you” has lost, leaving the mysterious “Toolman”) and a weather widget. The developers have a well-developed economic sense: there is a compass, a mirror, a magnifying glass, a ruler, a flashlight and a magnifying glass, as well as a standard stationery set. A proprietary system optimizer ensures “cleanliness and order.”

A wide range of settings allows you to customize the control of your smartphone for yourself: adjust the screen, controls, gestures, navigation, rebuild the control panel, sort applications into desktops and folders.

When turned on, the smartphone prompts you to immediately register in the “User Center” - an account protection service that will link the device to your number and make it difficult for a thief to get into the smartphone. In addition, by joining the “team”, you get access to branded themes and wallpapers.

For a person who communicates with Flyme for the first time, it will be unusual at first: in general, Android is familiar, but in the details... The devil, as they say, is in the details! It will probably take months to catch and master these features. Either you like it, or you get annoyed and move on to something else. It’s not for nothing that MEIZU fans keep to themselves and even founded the MY+ MEIZU CLUB RUSSIA community. They have their own atmosphere there...

Manufacturers promise to soon update the Flyme shell to version 6: the interface will be seriously redesigned, which will be further sharpened for one-handed control, taking into account the large diagonal, and will also go deeper into protecting and saving user data.

Iron

It is not for nothing that popular rumor calls the PRO 6 Plus the “Chinese Samsung”: in this model, the traditional Mediatek Helio has given way to the Samsung Exynos 8890 (the same installed in the Galaxy S 7). The latest 8-core 64-bit processor, developed using a 14 nm process technology , definitely “takes out” this phone, making it fast and productive.

4 GB of RAM is inferior to the top 6 GB... but this is the budget segment! Internal memory is limited to built-in storage: 64 or 128 GB to choose from. Our 64 GB version has a 10-core Mali-T880MP10 graphics chip (the more powerful Mali-T880MP12 corresponds to the 128 GB version).

There is more than enough hardware for regular routine applications, videos and 2D games. But 3D for this smartphone is still a bit complicated - the smoothness of playback is lost, and the gadget itself begins to obviously burn your hands.

Connection

Meizu has long had patent tensions with Qualcomm, which primarily interfere with normal interaction between the companies. Lacking the resources to independently create mobile platforms in the manner of Samsung, Huawei and, more recently, the company turns to MediaTek, and from time to time the aforementioned Samsung. The situation may change after the licensing agreement is signed between (and also after), but for now we are dealing with unusual variations on the theme of a flagship smartphone - without Snapdragon on board.

Mid-last year works on the basis of the MediaTek Helio X25 platform, which is not very successful and prone to overheating. It is logical that the upgrade of this model with a larger diagonal display received another hardware platform - Samsung Exynos 8990, thus becoming the second smartphone with this system-on-chip after ( Galaxy Note 7 doesn't count).

In addition to a larger AMOLED display - with Quad HD resolution, by the way - the Pro 6 Plus received new camera(now 12 megapixels, not 21, but such a decrease in resolution should no longer surprise anyone), more capacious battery, a heart rate sensor built into the Home key and other DACs with an amplifier. The design has remained almost unchanged, but there are indeed many internal differences.

Appearance, ergonomics and software

Usually, talking about smartphone design resembles a game of “find 10 differences” - and even this phrase has already become a template for review. Yes, smartphones are like two peas in a pod. But today’s case is particularly advanced: Pro 6 Plus directly inherits the regular Pro 6. Well, since it has its own face Meizu smartphones and so no (well, don’t take the eternal oval button, which replaces all navigation controls at once, as a corporate identity), all that remains is to admit the obvious - you will just have another smartphone.

You should also pay attention to the mini-jack, which in this case located below - near USB port Type-C and main speaker. Meizu engineers did not pretend that the smartphone had a built-in stereo system.

Another feature of the Plus is its size. The small frames around the display don’t help the situation much - recently only LG has been able to adequately beat the 5.7-inch diagonal with the G6 model, where the screen actually occupied almost the entire area of the front panel. Here, the space under and above the screen takes up a lot of space. It is inconvenient to use the gadget with one hand.

The device is available in gold (like ours), silver and dark gray colors. Meizu has not yet succumbed to the fashion for brighter shades.

The materials are typical for a flagship (and not only) smartphone these days - glass, which covers the front panel, and metal, from which the body itself is made. It is not known whether tempered glass is used here and, if so, what brand. But, unfortunately, it collects scratches and abrasions very quickly - you don’t even need to carry the Meizu Pro 6 Plus in one pocket with your keys. Also a smartphone can't brag and a high-quality oleophobic coating - prints are collected easily, but wiped off with difficulty.

Meizu Pro 6 Plus weighs relatively little - 158 grams. It's even lighter than the smaller regular Pro 6.

The controls are organized in a manner typical for Meizu smartphones - previously, the way of interacting with an Android smartphone using a single key could be called unique, but now, after the release of Huawei P10, it deserves the term “proprietary”. A full press takes the user to the main menu (a typical “Home” scenario), a light touch returns to the previous screen. List open applications called by swiping from the bottom of the screen.

Naturally, a fingerprint scanner is built into the same key - typical for modern smartphone, capacitive. The manufacturer claims that the scanner now works faster than on the Pro 6, but in fact it is impossible to notice this difference. Moreover, I didn't like how accurately it responded to touch. When using capacitive sensors, it is generally necessary to regularly update the fingerprint - sensors of this type are sensitive to microdamage to the skin. But in this case, errors (recognition on the second or third attempt) began already on the second day after recording the fingerprint. Rewriting also helped for about a day. A strange moment - it seemed that everyone had already learned how to work with scanners, and the same Meizu smartphones were already demonstrating a completely normal, average level for the industry. Using a fingerprint you can only unlock the device, no additional functions not provided. The heart rate sensor built into the same button here serves the sole purpose of increasing the security of the fingerprint sensor so that it cannot be fooled by a 3D impression of the finger or anything like that.

After the release of Meizu Pro 6, there was a certain understatement - the flagship smartphone turned out to be much more modest than usual. However, after the presentation of the Pro 6 Plus version, it became clear that the niche of top-end devices will now be occupied by the Plus series, and the regular Pro will go down a step lower, into the middle class.

Meizu Pro 6 Plus, the review of which is presented to your attention, is an uncompromising flagship. It contains all the best that can be offered to us today. Let's test the device and determine whether it can compete with smartphones in its price category.

Price and main characteristics

Pro 6 Plus is the most expensive smartphone in the Meizu range; its price in Chinese yuan is 29 and 32 thousand rubles per different versions, at the beginning of official sales in Russia, you can expect a price tag of 40 thousand. Specifications The device fully corresponds to its level:

  • display: 5.7”, Super AMOLED Quad HD 2560*1440 px;
  • processor: Samsung Exynos 8890 (4*2 GHz + 4*1.5 GHz) and Mali T880-MP10 video accelerator;
  • RAM: 4 GB;
  • internal memory: 64/128 GB, not expandable with memory cards;
  • camera: main – 12 MP, front – 5 MP;
  • communication: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.1, GPS, LTE;
  • battery: 3400 mAh.

It is noteworthy that the company abandoned the use of Helio chips from MediaTek in the flagship and installed the Exynos 8890 - the Galaxy S7 runs on a similar processor. In fact, the only criticism of the new product is the lack of a slot for a memory card.

Equipment and appearance

The Pro 6 Plus comes in an elegant matte black plastic box. The packaging is designed in a minimalist style; apart from the model name and company logo, there are no advertising inscriptions on it.

The smartphone package includes:

  • charging adapter;
  • USB cable-C;
  • clip;
  • technical waste paper.

The cable is packaged in a separate plastic case - a small thing, but a good thing. The quality of the accessories is excellent.

Appearance Pro 6 Plus is typical of the Meizu company, which has found its own style and continues to exploit it. Fans of the company like it, others consider the devices faceless - it's a matter of taste. The smartphone has an all-metal body and is available on the market in grey, black and gold colours.

The entire front of the Pro 6 Plus is covered with rounded edges. protective glass Gorilla Glass 3, the surface has a good oleophobic coating.

Above the screen is the earpiece, front camera and sensors. There is also a top led indicator events, which is practically invisible when disabled.

Under the screen there is a multifunctional mechanical key mTouch 2.2. This is the first smartphone from Meizu to use the proprietary button version 2.2. Its main difference from the previous version is the presence of a built-in heart rate meter; it also functions as a fingerprint scanner, encrypts individual applications and files, recognizes gestures, etc. However, Pro 6 Plus will be able to measure heart rate only after the release of the firmware update to Flyme 6, which is expected on December 30.

The body of the smartphone is monolithic, its back cover smoothly merges into the side ends. The back side has a pleasant rough texture, it is matte and does not collect fingerprints. To ensure network reception, there are two plastic strips for antennas on the cover.

The edge of the camera lens protrudes slightly beyond the body; under the optics there is a laser autofocus rangefinder, which is framed by a multi-tone LED flash. The flash itself consists of 10 separate diodes, which provides an extremely high level of brightness.

In terms of placement of functional elements, everything is standard: at the bottom there is an external speaker hole, a USB-C connector, a 3.5 port for headphones.

On the left is a slot for a SIM card tray.

On the right is the smartphone’s power key and volume rocker.

The build quality of Meizu's smartphones is traditionally high, this is evident even in budget models, so there are no complaints about the flagship. The body is rigid and resists bending and deformation well. The Pro 6 Plus is comfortable to hold in your hand; due to the rounded ends it does not cut your palm, and the rough surface of the back cover ensures no slipping.

Screen

Pro 6 Plus is equipped with a 5.7-inch Super AMOLED display, which has Quad HD resolution and a pixel density of 515 ppi. This resolution completely minimizes the main drawback of Amoled matrices - PenTile; individual points are not considered even point-blank. Like the processor, the smartphone screen is manufactured by Samsung.

The screen pleases the eye with an excellent level of contrast and wide viewing angles, without inversion in either brightness or color rendition. White color is displayed correctly, without tilting to the cold side. The maximum brightness is 600 cd/m2, which is enough for comfortable use of the smartphone in bright sunlight.

The Pro 6 Plus display supports 3D Touch technology, it is able to recognize pressure pressure, which gives additional features smartphone controls. Multi-touch handles 10 touches, there are color temperature settings.

The screen leaves a good overall impression; excellent characteristics are combined with decent workmanship, so the Pro 6 Plus gets a well-deserved A here

Performance

The Pro 6 Plus is based on an 8-core Exynos 8890 processor; a similar chip is installed in the Galaxy S7, but here it operates at lower frequencies. The new product has 4 GB of RAM built in, and they also promise the imminent release of the older version 6 Plus, which will have 6 GB of RAM and an uncut processor.

At everyday use the reduced processor frequencies are absolutely not felt - the smartphone, as befits a flagship, flies: the interface works perfectly smoothly, there are no stutters when surfing heavy Internet pages, any 3D games are launched at maximum speed.

In the benchmark, the Pro 6 Plus scores almost 114 thousand points, in the geekbench - 6 thousand points in multicore and 1737 points in single. The maximum processor heating under load was 35.6 degrees, which is not much. There is no throttling, the chip operates at the same frequencies even during prolonged gaming.

Camera

The smartphone is equipped with a 12 MP main module and a 5 MP front camera, and looking ahead, we’ll say that both cameras are implemented very well. The rear camera has an f/2.0 aperture, an optical image stabilizer and a 10-segment flash that works in two colors - in general, complete stuffing.

The Pro 6 Plus takes better photos than all Meizu smartphones. The pictures come out sharp, detailed, with excellent color rendition and dynamic range. Autofocus thanks to the laser rangefinder works extremely quickly, there are no problems with exposure and white balance.

The camera is also good in low light conditions. The quality of pictures indoors or in the evening is very decent, largely due to the presence of an optical stabilizer, due to which the automation can set a longer shutter speed without the risk of blurring.

The Pro 6 Plus can shoot video in 4K resolution at 30 fps, the built-in camera application is extremely functional, there is a complete set manual settings. Overall, the photographic capabilities of the Pro 6 Plus are comparable to those of Samsung Galaxy S7, which is considered one of the best camera phones on the market.

Speaker, sound quality

Sound quality in headphones is traditionally the strong point of Meizu smartphones. The Pro 6 Plus features a dedicated ESS ES9018K2M audio chip and an ADI AD45275 amplifier powered by Rybicon capacitors. These are Hi-Fi level solutions that can reveal even the highest quality headphones.

The sound in the headphones amazes you from the very first minutes of listening to music. The sound is high quality, lows and highs are perfectly balanced, the stage and sound detail are pleasing. The volume reserve is extremely large; the Pro 6 Plus can handle even high-impedance headphones.

The main speaker of the smartphone is not bad, it is loud and very clear - there is no metallic tint to the sound, there is even a slight hint of low frequencies. Suitable for viewing video content and signaling calls and notifications.

Battery

Pro 6 Plus is equipped with a 3400 mAh battery. You can’t call it a long-liver – battery life is average in the ward, but the smartphone, even with active use, is enough for a whole working day. During testing, the device lasted 12 hours when surfing the web with maximum screen brightness, 14 hours when playing HD video, and gave 6 hours of screen operation at maximum load.

It supports fast charging technology, which takes no more than 60 minutes, and also has standard and extreme energy-saving modes. In the latter, the smartphone screen turns black and white and all functions, except the dialer, are frozen, which allows you to stretch the charge for as long as possible.

Communication and Internet

The smartphone has a standard set of wireless interfaces on board - Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and is also present NFC module. USB-C interface introduced version 3.0, which provides much higher data transfer speeds than mid-price smartphones with USB 2.0. There are no problems with operator signal reception and satellite navigation. Pro 6 Plus picks up satellites in 4-5 seconds even on a cold start, which is an excellent result. The accuracy of the geopositioning system is high.

Competitors, conclusion

The Pro 6 Plus is a flagship through and through. This device succeeded in everything, from a good camera and excellent audio capabilities, to a cool screen and top-end hardware. The price of the smartphone cannot be called low; when translated into rubles, the official Chinese price is 29 and 32 thousand for versions with 64 and 128 GB of memory on board.

When the device goes on sale from domestic resellers it will be even more expensive, about 40 thousand, so the Pro 6 Plus can be compared with the flagships of A brands - Galaxy S7 (the gray version can be purchased for 35 thousand), HTC 10 (39 thousand in Svyaznoy). The direct competitor among the top Chinese is (33 thousand for the 128/6 GB version), which is better in terms of performance due to the Snapdragon 821, but is inferior to the Pro 6 Plus in terms of camera and sound quality in the headphones.

The Meizu lineup is diverse and wide, and people are buying up inexpensive representatives of the Meilan line in droves. However, my soul lies with the flagships, since it is in them that companies show everything they are capable of. Meizu's Pro 6 Plus is just like that - top-end, cool, powerful. Not some kind of “semi-flagship” like the Pro 6, but a real flagship with a capital “F”. Let's figure out exactly what Meizu is going to throw at its competitors.

Design and equipment

In addition to the phone, the black plastic box contains a powerful charger, a USB Type-C cable, documentation and a nice needle for removing the SIM tray. Often, headsets are not included in kits for the sake of saving money, but here the main reason for the lack of a headset can be cited as the musical component of the smartphone (and savings, of course). To reveal the sound potential of the device, you need quite expensive and high-quality headphones, and few people would agree to pay for such a set. Equipping such a musicphone with a wretched accessory is more expensive for yourself, and you won’t get any criticism later.

Nowadays, few people can surprise with their design, but Meizu must be given its due - among the dull monotony, it was able to find and preserve some kind of corporate style. In general, jokes aside, Meizu’s style is not something ephemeral. In the past, it definitely looked at Apple, but now it is going its own way, and many manufacturers from the Middle Kingdom are copying not just anyone, but the Zhuhai vendor. I think, looking at the latest Android devices from Chinese companies, you have often caught yourself thinking that they are somewhat similar to the M3 Note or Pro 6. In particular, Meizu products are remembered by the button copied from mBack/mTouch.

Meizu Pro 6 Plus with a 5.7" display is comparable in size to Apple iPhone 7 Plus and Google Pixel XL, which have 5.5" panels. You can regard this as a criticism of Apple and HTC, or you can praise Meizu. I'm used to phablets, so such dimensions don't cause me any inconvenience. In addition, the Flyme platform is designed for gesture control. The Pro 6 Plus case can be praised for its thinness and rounded edges (nothing sticks in anywhere), for adequate bezels and indents, as well as for the mTouch multifunction key with a fast and accurate fingerprint scanner. If you have not yet joined Meizu and have no idea what it is, let me explain: there is only one button under the screen and several actions are associated with it. A single tap on the touch layer is responsible for “back”, a single tap sends you to home screen, pressing and holding locks the phone, and double pressing on the locker brings up the music player. You can easily figure out the gestures on the lock screen yourself.

The Meizu Pro 6 Plus comes in three colors (black, silver and gold), but rumors suggest a fourth option – red. To my taste, the Pro 6 Plus looks best in a dark case - solid, impressive, always on trend.

The multimedia speaker is located at the bottom end and is accompanied by other elements. I'm glad that everything is displayed symmetrically - it's nice to look at. The speaker is inferior in sound volume to the stereo speakers of the iPhone 7 Plus, but plays noticeably cleaner and deeper brainchild of Apple. Comparison with the Mi5S is not in favor of the Xiaomi flagship in all respects, since the Pro 6 Plus is both louder and more detailed.

I don’t know about you, but I am amused by the change in rhetoric of Meizu representatives during each announcement. Then they drown for IPS and Full resolution HD, then they turn the record over and sing odes to AMOLED and 2K. Marketing as it is. The Pro 6 Plus uses a high-quality, latest generation Super AMOLED panel from Samsung. The colors are quite pleasant, not eye-popping. White color, of course, is not like best IPS, but compared to previous generations, AMOLED is very good. The brightness adjustment range is wide, which will please residents of sunny regions and those who like to stare at the screen at night.

There is an Always on Display function, with which the screen is turned off helpful information. For AMOLED, it is very appropriate, since due to the peculiarity of the organic matrix, only those pixels that output data are active. There will not be such a high power consumption as with IPS, which illuminates the entire panel even when outputting black. For some reason the company does not name the supplier of 2.5D glass, but I will say that during the test no visible scratches appeared, the glass survived several falls to the floor, and the oleophobic layer was much more pleasing than the iPhone’s. The 3D Press function, which allows you to recognize forceful pressing, first appeared in Meizu in Pro 6. In Pro 6 Plus, I remembered about it only when I was studying the settings menu, and I used it only a few times - while shooting a video review. Forgive me Apple fans, but 3D Touch and its derivatives are one of the most useless innovations the mobile industry has seen.

Software

Currently, the Pro 6 Plus is based on the fifth version of Flyme, however, this will not last long, because the company is about to release a redesigned Flyme OS 6 (there is already a beta version). Among other things, it will offer the function of measuring heartbeat by touching the user's finger to the mTouch key. A minimalistic interface, the ability to root with a minimum of effort and a small amount of pre-installed software - all this will remain a feature of Flyme. And due to the imminent update, I will not dwell on the software in more detail. Let's do a separate review of Flyme OS 6.

Sound

Many of you know that Meizu started out by producing music players. Good audio is in the company's DNA. And due to its capabilities and expediency, it will definitely please music lovers. Even Meizu's budget phones sound good next to their classmates, and the flagships are always at the top in terms of sound. The Pro 6 Plus uses an ESS ES9018K2M DAC and an ADI AD45275 amplifier. On the smartphone, we listened to lossless tracks with Denon D600, Sennheiser Momentum M2, Beyerdynamic DT1770 Pro and Meizu HD50 headphones. The sound of the Pro 6 Plus was compared with the Xiaomi Mi5s and Google Pixel XL.

In the reviews of Mi5s and Pixel XL, I emphasized that the Qualcomm codec integrated into the Snapdragon 821 provides decent sound even for demanding listeners. Meizu raises the bar even higher with Pro 6 Plus. However, you must understand that just purchasing a top-end musicphone is not enough to get the full thrill from the work of professionals - producers, sound engineers and artists. I suggest paying a lot of attention to headphones, as they have a much greater impact on the quality and perception of sound. Relatively speaking, if in a blind audition you take the sound of Meizu Pro 6 Plus with Sennheiser Momentum M2 as 8 points out of 10, then you would not rate the Pro 6 Plus – HD50 combination higher than 4/10. This in no way makes Meizu headphones bad (they fit perfectly with the initial Meilan), it’s just that the Pro 6 Plus has much more potential that the on-ear HD50s are not capable of revealing. In other words, when buying a Pro 6 Plus, be prepared to invest in quality headphones that cost at least half the price of a smartphone.

Camera

The Pro 6 Plus not only has the best audio hardware among Meizu smartphones, but also the best camera. And it doesn’t look weak compared to its competitors. In the implementation of the 12-megapixel Sony IMX386 sensor with 1.25 micron pixels, 4-axis optical stabilization, phase and laser autofocus and 6-lens optics with f/2.0 aperture, the Chinese manufacturer was helped by South Korean specialists from Samsung. How are they even here, you ask? The fact is that the camera is based on chipset drivers, and since the Pro 6 Plus has Samsung Exynos, the algorithms were mostly provided by the Korean side. On paper, the MX6 and Pro 6 Plus cameras are similar in specifications, but there is little similarity between the photos. See for yourself and pass it on to others who say the same:

MX6 and Pro 6 Plus:

MX6 and Pro 6 Plus

What causes such significant differences? Algorithms, drivers and optical stabilization, which allows you to more flexibly adjust shutter speed and ISO to achieve best result. I was able to shoot with the Pro 6 Plus in a variety of conditions, both simple and challenging. The results in the vast majority of scenarios were, if not outstanding, then very decent. The design of the Pro 6 Plus is reminiscent of Samsung's with the Galaxy S7 edge, only without strong sharpening. The real scourge of past Meizu phones was blurry frames, because of which, under unfavorable lighting conditions, you had to take 2-4 identical frames in the hope that at least one of them would be clear. If this bothered you and you were waiting for the company to finally figure it out, then rejoice, because optical stabilization works real miracles here: there is little defect, there is little noise in the dark, and it helps a lot in video (more on that below) . Perhaps, in terms of camera, the Pro 6 Plus can confidently compete with others for a place in the Top 5 best flagship camera phones of 2016.

The front camera has a resolution of 5 megapixels. The American company ArcSoft helped in the implementation of the Meizu selfie module. All these retouching effects that can turn you into a big-eyed, rosy-cheeked Chinese cutie are their doing. Personally, I would like ArcSoft specialists to help Meizu with the main module, as they did in 2014 for VIVO Xshot, the photos from which still look amazing today. As for ourselves with the Pro 6 Plus, they are normal. Autofocus and a high resolution They wouldn't hurt here, but even without them, selfies are fun.

Serious progress is also noticeable in the implementation of 4K video recording. The optical stabilizer helps smooth out shaking, tracking autofocus is aimed smoothly and accurately, and the picture does not crumble into squares, like the Xiaomi Mi Mix (examples), and does not double, like the Google Pixel XL (examples). The fly in the ointment was the soundtrack, which is recorded in mono with a low bitrate of 96 kbit/sec. The company was able to overcome the overload at concerts, but the overall quality could have been higher. There is a lack of bitrate.

Overall, Meizu has done a great job on the camera, which is good news. There is confidence that with the same course the company will not only gain a foothold in the Top 5 best brands camera, but will also become a constant source of comparison, like the Apple iPhone and Samsung Galaxy, which are often seen as the gold standard.

Benchmarks and Performance

The Meizu Pro 6 Plus has top-end hardware: Exynos 8 Octa 8890 processor, 4 GB of RAM and 64 or 128 GB of internal memory. One could say that it is like the Samsung Galaxy S7, if not for one “but”. Versions with 64 and 128 GB of memory use different chips and graphics accelerators. The smaller variant has 4 x 2.0 GHz Exynos M1 cores and 4 x 1.5 GHz Cortex-A53 cores, while the larger storage option boasts 4 x 2.3 GHz Exynos M1 cores and 4 x 1.5 GHz Cortex-A53 cores. 1.6 GHz. As for the video chip, the 64 GB has a Mali-T880MP10, and the 128 GB has a Mali-T880MP12. U Korean flagship The chipset corresponds to the older Pro 6 Plus. In the test we have a regular firmware and in benchmarks it is inferior to the Galaxy S7 edge we have at our disposal. In addition, the device throttles quite a bit, as can be seen from a series of AnTuTu runs (already on the second run, the scores drop from 113 thousand to 78 thousand).

In toys, Samsung's flagship is also ahead. Whatever one may say, the extra gigahertz and the additional two graphics cores do their job. Our test subject’s situation with games is as follows: Asphalt 8 – stable 30 fps, Asphalt Extreme – 15-25 fps, Bully – 25-30 fps, Riptide GP: Renegade – 15-20 fps, Dead Trigger 2 – 25-60 fps, Spider -Man 2 – 15-30 fps, World of Tanks – 25-60 fps. The graphics were set to the highest possible level everywhere, and the processor operating mode was high-performance. I’m sure the 128GB Pro 6 Plus runs these applications 10-20 percent better, so as soon as the opportunity arises, we’ll definitely try it out. Of course, you can and should play on a Pro 6 Plus with 64 GB of memory, but in some cases you will have to lower the graphics for a comfortable game. Perhaps Meizu should implement a feature to change the screen resolution, like Samsung did with the Galaxy S7 edge after updating to Android Nougat. By the way, the phone heats up slightly, which can be seen from the temperature sensor of the battery - no higher than 38 degrees.

discharge in video and in game

The battery for a smartphone of this format is adequate: 3400 mAh. In addition, mCharge 3.0 fast charging technology is supported, with which the battery is recharged in a matter of minutes. Our measurements showed that when playing video at maximum brightness, the device can last about 13.5 hours, and the discharge in the game Asphalt 8 per hour at a brightness level comfortable for the eyes is almost 29%. If the power consumption in video mode matches that of competitors with AMOLED and exceeds that of opponents with IPS, then such power consumption in gaming mode is somewhat anomalous (checked twice) - other devices sit down 1.5-2 times slower. At the same time, during idle time, when browsing and in social networks, the level is quite low. There is a suspicion that the reason may be that we have a press sample on hand, released several months before the start of sales in Russia. And this is another reason to get a Meizu Pro 6 Plus with 128 GB from a fresh pariah. At the same time, you can do a review of Flyme OS 6 with it.

conclusions

For all fans of the Meizu Pro 6 Plus brand, it is a real find. And for those who have never owned a “meiza” before, this is an excellent candidate for purchase if you need a “multimedia combine.” He got better sound and best camera, it feels amazing in your hands and looks impressive, and the screen, although devoid of the currently fashionable curves, is able to please even AMOLED haters with a picture. For 35-39 thousand rubles (versions with 64 and 128 GB of memory), there are simply no smartphones in Russian retail that can offer a comparable set of advantages.

About six months ago, I seriously thought about buying a Meizu Pro 6. For my money, it was an interesting phone, photos of which some media confused with the new iPhone. Plus it has a good DAC, which was important to me. But even at the time of announcement, the device’s performance was not the best. And today its characteristics are comparable to almost any phone in the mid-price segment. Meizu realized its mistakes and released Meizu Pro 6 Plus, which took the place of the flagship.

Appearance

This phone cannot be confused with anything else. The corporate style is immediately recognizable. Once you see the mechanical button, it’s immediately clear that this is Meizu. So it makes no sense to accuse the company of plagiarism now.

But this hides a small drawback. All Meizu phones, except for the U line, are as similar to each other as two peas in a pod. For owners of budget solutions, this is only a plus, but it’s a shame to go with a flagship for 11-12 thousand hryvnia and be indistinguishable from the same M3s or M5 Note.

The body is entirely made of high-quality aluminum, which is available in three colors: gold, silver and dark gray. Its design has not changed at all - it is a slightly larger version of the Pro 6. The phone retains all the features of its predecessor: curved antenna dividers, a round flash with 10 diodes and neat rounded edges. The problem with it slipping out of your hands also remains. The body of the phone is too smooth, there is nothing for your fingers to grab onto.

The quality of all elements deserves only praise. Everything fits perfectly, nothing crunches or rings. Only the camera module sticks out a little above the body, but this can be justified by the presence of optical stabilization.

Screen

The front panel is covered with protective 2.5D glass with a good oleophobic coating. Underneath it is a 5.7-inch Super AMOLED matrix with 2K resolution. There is no particular benefit from this resolution, but you cannot deny the richness and sharpness of this panel. Watching 2K video on it is a complete thrill; I haven’t been so happy with a screen on a phone for a long time.

For those who have used devices with IPS matrices, the color saturation may seem too high, but you get used to it after a couple of days. And you already look at IPS like an old discolored trough.

The matrix here is made by Samsung, so there are no problems - maximum viewing angles, a good margin of brightness and a normal white color, which almost does not turn green.

The Super AMOLED panel allowed the phone to constantly display the time, date and battery level without draining the phone's battery. It's a pity, but you can't customize this list.

In addition, the manufacturer has equipped the screen with 3D Press support. This is not the company's first phone with this technology, but throughout its existence, it has never become useful.

Third-party developers are not interested in adding 3D Press support for the sake of several Meizu models.

Specifications

  • Dimensions: 155.6 x 77.3 x 7.3 mm, weight: 158 g;
  • Display: 5.7-inch with a resolution of 2560 x 1440, 518ppi, matrix – Super AMOLED;
  • Processor: Exynos 8890;
  • Video accelerator: ARM Mali-T880 MP10;
  • RAM: 4 GB LPDDR4;
  • ROM: 64 GB, UFS 2.0;
  • Main camera: 12 MP, f/2.0, 4K video at 30 fps;
  • Front camera: 5 MP, f/2.0;
  • Battery: 3400 mAh;
  • Other: USB Type-C v3.1, Wi-Fi ac, NFC, Bluetooth 4.1, fast charging, fingerprint scanner.

The smartphone has an eight-core Exynos 8890, 4 GB random access memory and video accelerator Mali-T880. The 64 and 128 GB versions differ in CPU speed and video accelerator. The top version has 12-core graphics instead of 10-core.

This set of characteristics should have helped the phone run any games on maximum settings. But, for example, in Geekbench 4 the smartphone produced simply ridiculous results, and the same Asphalt Xtreme mercilessly slows down. And this despite the fact that in the settings I set the “maximum performance” parameter.

NFS and Unkilled are more stable. True, the phone heats up so much that it is uncomfortable to hold in your hands. This can all be attributed to the dampness of the firmware, because the phone was created for Flyme 6, but now runs on the old version (Flyme 5). With it, even some phone features are disabled, like the same heart rate sensor that is built into the fingerprint scanner. At the moment it is simply not involved.

And here operating system works stably and quickly. However, this is not surprising. Flyme is perfectly optimized and even state employees work on it without problems.

The phone uses the company's standard fingerprint scanner – mTouch 2.1. Placement on the front side, in my opinion, is the most convenient. The smartphone can be unlocked without lifting it from the table. There are no questions about the work and accuracy of the definition.

Sound quality and battery life

As for music, that's a separate conversation. Meizu Pro 6 Plus is equipped with a separate ES9018k2m DAC, Solo AD45275 amplifier and high-quality Rubycon capacitors. Paired with good headphones it gives great sound.

Manual signal gain control is available in the settings. If the volume level seems insufficient to you, you can increase it.

Volume, frequency range and detail are excellent here. If you need a phone with high-quality sound, Pro 6 Plus will be a great option. Only the standard equalizer should be replaced immediately, it is too primitive.

But the external speakers, as in most Meizu phones, are quiet and mediocre. The sound from them is squeaky, so it’s better to get a wireless speaker.

You shouldn’t count on record-breaking battery life, because this is a flagship with a powerful processor and big screen. In active mode – a day and a half of battery life. Thank you anyway.

But in an emergency, proprietary fast charging via USB Type-C 3.1 solves the problem – half the battery will be filled in just half an hour. Further charging is not so fast, but it is better than the standard two to three hours. And the data transfer speed through this connector can reach 5 Gbit/sec.

Camera

The phone has a relatively fresh 12 MP Sony IMX386 sensor with laser and phase detection autofocus, 6-lens optics, f/2.0 aperture and optical stabilization. Compared to the previous model, the quality has increased significantly, this is noticeable even on the phone screen. But the phone is still far from reaching the level of other flagships.

I repeat, perhaps the problems are due to dampness in the firmware, but both optical stabilization and autofocus in my model did not work correctly, which is why most of the photos turned out out of focus. And as the quality deteriorates, the picture begins to become noticeably noisy.

The dynamic range was frankly pleasing; you can get good pictures even without using HDR. But HDR itself works very slowly, and it’s awkward to turn on. I'd like to see an updated version of the camera app, as the current one isn't the most intuitive. It’s time to replace mode management using small icons with swipes.
