Samsung TV lineup of the year. Samsung TVs

Samsung TVs in 2015 will all have LCD screens with LED backlighting. 4K resolution will be available in most models. The flagship models will use the new Tizen operating system, which will update the functionality of Smart TV. Advanced models will be called SUHD.

In 2015, there are no longer devices with plasma screens in the Samsung TV lineup, and there are still no OLED screens.

This year, LED matrix backlighting has been developed. Now, instead of conventional LED backlighting, quantum dot LEDs or composite LEDs are used, which combine three colors in one. These types of lighting allow you to expand the color palette. TVs that combine ultra-high resolution 4K Ultra HD with an expanded color gamut are called SUHD. These will be flagship models with a set of advanced technologies.

"Peak Illuminator" - This term indicates that the TV is capable of displaying an increased level of brightness. "Ultimate" this option has support for HDR (high luminance range).

"Precision Black" is a local backlight dimming system for better black levels. But only the "Pro" version has a full array of LEDs for maximum local dimming.

To increase the color gamut (increase the color gamut), quantum dots are used; in Samsung models this backlight is called “Nano crystals”.

At the beginning of 2015, Samsung introduced an updated range of its televisions. Back in 2014, the production of plasma TV models was discontinued, and the production of OLED TV receivers is not planned for 2015. So all 2015 TV models are assembled on liquid crystal matrices backlit by light emitting diodes (LED) or quantum dots.

It is the introduction by all manufacturers of quantum dots as backlight for LCD matrices that is one of the main trends of 2015. The use of quantum dot backlight allows you to expand the color palette; in another way, the number of displayed colors increases. Samsung calls its TVs with the new backlight "SUHD". UHD stands for ultra-high resolution 4K, which began to be introduced en masse last year, but the letter “S” stands for, according to Samsung representatives, four characteristics at once: stylish, smart, exciting and luxurious (Stylish, Spectacular, Smart, Superb).

In 2015, under the SUHD logo, Samsung will produce television receivers based on a liquid crystal matrix backlit by quantum dots. These models will also have a SUHD Re-mastering Engine. The screens will have a curved shape. SUHD TVs will also work with the updated Smart TV platform based on the new Tizen system.

Samsung's use of the Tizen operating system is also an innovation for the 2015 model range. Tizen is an open operating system developed by Intel and Samsung. Thanks to the use of Tizen, the new Smart TV will now have a different, more intuitive interface and other functions will be updated and improved.

Samsung SUHD models will be available in the JS9500, JS9000 and JS8500 series. In 2015, models with curved screens and ultra-high 4K resolution can already be found in the 7 and 6 series, while last year such TVs were only in the 8 and 9 series. This year, the basis of the model range will be television receivers with screens with 4K resolution (Ultra HD). The familiar Full HD format will be available in series 4, 5 and 6.

Samsung TVs of the 2015 model year will appear on sale throughout the year, the younger series will hit the shelves closer to autumn. But the flagship models should go on sale in the spring.

The main Samsung technologies that are used in this year’s television devices:

  1. Refresh rate Hz(increased this year, most likely due to an increase in the backlight flickering frequency);
  2. Peak Illuminator – the ability to reproduce a high level of brightness;
  3. Ultimate – support for HDR (High Dynamic Range) mode, high dynamic range;
  4. Precision Black – equalizes brightness across the screen area by correcting local dimming and improves black levels;
  5. Precision Black Pro is an improved version of the previous technology;
  6. VP9 – decoding of streaming 4K video, for example from YouTube;
  7. HDR (High Dynamic Range Imaging) - increased brightness range.

As for 3D surround television, the active 3D system remains in 2015, which Samsung has been developing for several years now. There are no revolutionary solutions in 3D, the system is the same as in 2014. The ability to play content in 3D is available in most models, so this parameter is not indicated separately in the characteristics.

New line of SUHD TVs

Samsung recently unveiled its line of SUHD TVs at CES 2015 with a number of important features. Innovations include SUHD image remastering processor, thanks to which the quality of the presented picture is significantly improved. Another unique development is also a curved TV screen, which creates an unusual presence effect. The Smart TV platform is enhanced with smart features and runs on the Tizen operating system, providing unlimited access to relevant content across a wide range of devices, increasing entertainment options.

The screen of the new Samsung SUHD TV is equipped nanocrystalline semiconductors, the transmission of color is carried out depending on the size of the point. This technology increases color accuracy by almost 64 times when comparing new products with conventional TVs. Notable is the automatic image brightness analysis function. Thus, the image remastering processor reduces unnecessary power consumption while simultaneously providing a high level of contrast. When compared with conventional TVs, the image brightness of new TVs from Samsung is noticeably increased by 2.5 times. Thanks to the innovation, black shades are even more saturated and have more points for color adjustment.

The content has been successfully optimized to SUHD quality standards. Optimization was carried out with the help of the famous Hollywood studio - 20th CenturyFox. In addition, when creating SUHD TV, Samsung used environmentally friendly technologies that ensure a high level of energy efficiency and reliability. Smart TVs from Samsung, the production of which will be launched in 2015, will be produced on based on an OS called Tizen— a platform that allows the creation of compatible TV applications.

What features does the new range of TVs from Samsung 2015 have?

  • The developers have made the interface easier to use Samsung Smart Hub. The menu is displayed on one screen with convenient navigation, allowing you to immediately go to your favorite content. You can also see various recommendations in the menu, allowing you to search for relevant content.
  • Connection to mobile gadgets occurs through Quick Connect, as well as the well-known function Bluetooth Low Energy. Thus, the Samsung Smart TV allows the user to transfer any file to the TV with one click, or vice versa - from the TV to a mobile device. Noteworthy is the function of watching television programs via a mobile device.
  • Watching UHD movies and various programs can be provided by the best content providers. In addition, it is possible to use the new service from Samsung to download UHD movies through a familiar UHD Video Pack. Content security is ensured by standards developed by the Secure Content Storage Association.
  • Thanks to Samsung Sports Live the user will have the opportunity to watch their favorite game live while simultaneously conveniently viewing statistics of teams and players.
  • Samsung Milk Video is a service that will provide access to the best video clips directly from the web pages of Samsung partners, which number more than 50 content providers. To quickly and usefully search for content, the interface is equipped with individual recommendations.
  • Many people will also like the alarm clock Briefing on TV, which also allows synchronization of the TV with mobile devices. The TV screen can be configured to display important information, the type of which is selected by the user.
  • The line of TVs released in 2015 by Samsung SUHD TV will be presented on the market in three series: JS8500, JS9000 and JS9500. The number of diagonals will be nine in 48 - 88 inches.

Samsung will release more UltraHD TVs this year than ever before, and the company also unveiled high-end S’UHD models to argue that TVs go beyond the scope of a fair solution. Most of the new TVs are curved and Samsung has updated its Smart TV platform which now runs on Tizen. Below is full review of Samsung TVs 2015.

Plasma is gone, and Samsung's plans for OLED TVs are still high. Samsung ranks first in the UltraHD standard that goes beyond high definition. Samsung calls it S'UHD, and promises amazing pictures. S'UHD quality combines 4K and UltraHD resolution with a wider color gamut in close proximity to DCI-P3, which is used in cinemas. This means that TVs are capable of reproducing some of these colors that the HD (Rec.709) gamma standard cannot. The human eye can see many more colors than traditional TVs, so this is an important step forward. Samsung's flagship JS9500 adds another component to the mix, HDR (High Dynamic Range) for brighter whites and deeper blacks.

The future of televisions is literally flying forward. However, it's important to understand that you can only benefit from wider color gamut (WCG) and HDR if the film industry starts producing films that meet these standards. Samsung tells us that the company is working with Hollywood to make this possible, and Netflix promises HDR this year, but there are currently no films available on the consumer market. We recently had the opportunity to see Life of Pi HDR and WCG clips and it looked amazing.

Samsung will release a range of affordable TVs, which they simply call UltraHD TVs. This year, UltraHD will start with the 6 Series, which will offer different design options. There are also new 7 and 8 series UltraHD TVs. Most are curved, but there are flat ones if that's what you want. UltraHD TVs will be available in sizes from 40 to 88 inches, but there will be no larger Full HD TV sizes this year. Full HD is available on 4, 5 and 6 series TVs, but none of them will be UltraHD systems. Another big change for Samsung in 2015 is Tizen. You may have heard of Tizen if you use a Samsung smartphone, but Tizen is also intended for other products. In fact, Tizen is Samsung's idea of a cross-device operating system that will be used to power everything from kitchen appliances to mobile devices. And now Tizen is coming to TVs.

ALL NEW ULTRA-THIN TVS FROM SAMSUNG HD WILL WORK ON TIZEN

Tizen will offer apps including Netflix, YouTube, HBO Go, Vudu, BBC iPlayer, Plex, and Amazon Instant, but apps will need to be updated for the new platform so some apps from older TVs may be missing at launch. Samsung has even added support for VP9 decoding, meaning you can experience YouTube in 4K for the first time on a TV screen. There is already a lot of 4K content available for streaming on YouTube. Many of Samsung's TVs will offer multiroom support, something Samsung revealed last year. Essentially, this allows you to connect your speakers wirelessly to your TV. While speakers obviously still need cords, wireless audio makes it easier to set up a surround sound system in your living room without hassle. Look at Samsung "WAM" speakers, if you want to know more.

Some of Samsung's European TVs will provide single-channel tuner capabilities to record one program while watching another. You just need to buy and connect a USB hard drive to one of the USB ports on the back of your TV. You can also pause a live stream and schedule future recordings even when the TV is turned off. As always, there are a lot of buzzwords in the spec list, including inflated Hz numbers. "Peak Illuminator" is Samsung's way of saying that the TV can reproduce higher brightness levels, but only the "Ultimate" variant has full HDR (High Dynamic Range) support. "Precision Black" is a local dimming system for deeper blacks, but only the "Pro" option is full-array local dimming. Samsung uses quantum dots to increase the color gamut in its S'UHD TVs, but the company prefers to call it "Nano crystals." Like all other TV makers, Samsung has more or less forgotten about 3D. In fact, Samsung doesn't even talk about 3D and no longer highlights 3D in the specs list. To be clear, 3D is still included in some TVs, but the industry isn't really focusing on it anymore. It's probably worth noting that a 4K 3D standard doesn't exist yet, and not even the upcoming UltraHD Blu-Ray standard will support 3D.

Samsung's 2015 TVs will begin shipping in the US and Europe in the next couple of weeks. This review will be updated as we receive more information.

SAMSUNG J5100 AND J4100

Finally, we have the J5100 and J4100 budget models. These are ordinary TVs without Smart TV and without modern image systems.

  • Flat
  • Full HD

S'UHD Ultra HD Full HD

  • Display: 48’’, 1920x1080, flat
  • Matrix: LCD (*VA)
  • 3D: no
  • SmartTV: Tizen OS
  • Sound: 2x 10 W
  • Price: 45,000 rub.

A model with the non-trivial name UE48J6330AU found itself in this top TV set as an inexpensive but functional solution with Full HD support. 48 inches is a balanced size for the average living room or bedroom. I admit, it was not easy to make the final choice in this category, since absolutely all manufacturers released a huge number of devices with similar characteristics in 2015. Still, with all the imposition of Ultra HD and devices with curved screens, the most popular is still the “flat” 1080p format. The final price of the product also plays an important role.

The Korean manufacturer also did their best. The number of lines updated in 2015 is simply off the charts. Specifically, the UE48J6330AU model belongs to the sixth series. I chose a 48'' TV. But there is a 40-inch version on sale. The J6300 and J6200 series have similar properties and characteristics. So, the difference between them is the presence of a special control panel with a touch button. With its help it is more convenient to manage Tizen OS. The J6200 comes with the usual “lazy one”. In general, there is plenty to choose from.

Samsung UE48J6330AU

It makes no sense to demand much from the UE48J6330AU. Still, the TV is equipped with a lot of interesting features. The main thing in the “box” is, of course, the image quality. This model uses a VA matrix with a scanning frequency of 120 Hz. Therefore, the UE48J6330AU is fine with contrast. Additionally, Micro Dimming Pro technology is used, which at the software level divides the screen area into many parts and shades them if necessary. The model is qualitatively calibrated at the factory. The “Cinema” mode is especially pleasing. In any case, the TV is replete with a variety of options for changing the image quality. For example, it is possible to adjust the white balance by 10 points.

Perhaps this point will be critical for some when choosing a TV, but the UE48J6330AU does not support 3D. For me personally, the lack of this technology is not a tragedy. All the hype about 3D died down a long time ago. Company marketers have other targets.

As for functionality, in the 2015 models the Tizen operating system is responsible for it. Samsung's main motive for switching to this OS is to optimize the process of writing additional software, as well as improve multitasking. At the time of the announcement, the firmware already had a very large number of applications for every taste and color. You can read more about Tizen OS.

Sony BRAVIA KDL-55W807C

Characteristics:

  • Display: 65’’, 1920x1080, flat
  • Matrix: LCD (*VA)
  • 3D: yes
  • SmartTV: Android TV
  • Sound: 2x 10 W
  • Price: 80,000 rub.

BRAVIA KDL-55W807C acts as an advanced Full HD TV. The W807C line includes four models with diagonals of 43 inches, 50 inches, 55 inches and 65 inches, respectively. I didn't choose the largest model. However, its cost exceeds some budget 4K solutions with smaller diagonals. And yet, having gotten to know the BRAVIA KDL-55W807C better, you understand what you are paying that kind of money for.

The first is excellent image quality. Sony remains true to itself and continues to use VA matrices. Therefore, the BRAVIA KDL-55W807C has a contrast ratio of 3300:1. Indeed, on both TVs the image on the screen looks very deep and realistic. The quality of the transmitted image is also okay. The average gray scale Delta-E deviation was only 2.45 (less than three is an excellent rating). The ColorChecker test using 24 patterns recorded an error of 2.7 with a maximum deviation of 5.06. Just a great result for the out-of-the-box mode! However, it can always be improved. The TV in question is equipped with a large number of picture settings. The most important thing, in my opinion, is support for 10-point white balance calibration.

Since 2015, Sony has relied on Android TV in its solutions. The previous operating system - Sony Entertainment Network (SEN) - was seriously criticized, but cooperation with Google made it possible in 2015 to compete on an equal footing with the same Tizen OS and WebOS. In particular, there are no complaints at all about the functionality of Android TV. Although modified, this firmware significantly increases the multimedia capabilities of the TV, because it adds the ability to install applications from the Play Market, including games, as well as connect various peripherals: from a keyboard to a gamepad. Plus, Sony TVs allow you to install programs from an external drive. You just need to upload the APK file to the USB flash drive and load it in the pre-installed ES Explorer program.

LG 55EG910V

Characteristics:

  • Display: 55’’, 1920x1080, curved
  • Matrix: OLED
  • 3D: yes
  • SmartTV: WebOS
  • Sound: 2x 10 W
  • Price: 135,000 rub.

The BRAVIA KDL-55W807C will easily compete for the title of the best Full HD TV with the 55EG910V model. But we decided to give it another award - as the most affordable OLED device. In principle, only models from LG and one single TV from Panasonic can participate in this nomination. In fact, the only competitor to the LG 55EG910V is... 55EC930V, but last year's model is equipped with the first, slower version of WebOS. Other producers prefer to watch on the sidelines. There is nothing to be done, it is the Korean giant that is betting on OLED. And her TVs are getting better and better year after year, but most importantly, they are getting cheaper and cheaper.

The 55EG910V has a smooth curved screen. Therefore, at a right angle with a diagonal of 55 inches, it is almost not felt. This may not suit those users who want more immersion. The solution here is simple: take a large diagonal with Ultra HD resolution. A smooth arc avoids geometric distortions that are unpleasant to the eye. So the curvature of the 55EG910V specifically should be considered solely as a design move.

OLED is always an excellent contrast, tending to infinity. That is why no LCD matrix can compare with it in terms of realism and depth of the picture. Everything is fine with the 55EG910V and image quality. Yes, OLED settings are generally more difficult to configure than LCD panels. In addition to trivial functions, for example, 20-point white balance calibration is available. You can also select the color gamut option in the settings: “Original” or “Standard”. In the first case, it slightly exceeds the Rec. 709.

WebOS has long established itself as a very functional operating system on LG TVs. The number of programs is off the charts. Here the firmware is certainly not inferior to Tizen OS from Samsung. It was WebOS that became the first operating system with multitasking. This means that several applications can be running simultaneously, and you can always switch between them if necessary. The main feature of the second version of WebOS is optimization. Compared to the first revision, the firmware began to work noticeably faster. All applications open in literally seconds. Media files stored on external drives are instantly processed. Simultaneous launch of several tasks (from three to five) does not lead to unpleasant interface slowdowns.

Panasonic VIERA TX-50CXR800

Characteristics:

  • Display: 50’’, 3840x2160, flat
  • Matrix: LCD (*VA)
  • 3D: yes
  • SmartTV: Firefox OS
  • Sound: 2x 10 W
  • Price: 75,000 rub.

Panasonic VIERA TX-50CXR800 in our rating acts as the best budget TV with 4K resolution. And yet, the Japanese manufacturer resorted to a little marketing trick. The fact is that in Russia, under the more prestigious index XR800, they sell the European version of the CX700. As a result, VIERA TX-50CXR800 at 50 inches has a low cost for Ultra HD TVs. Yes, you can find cheaper devices on sale, but they will not be able to compete in terms of image quality with the Japanese model.

The VIERA TX-50CXR800 is based on a VA matrix. Therefore, the TV has a high contrast ratio of 4000:1. Excellent result for LCD. The Panas' image quality is also okay. The average error on 24 ColorChecker templates fits into two units. The Delta-E deviation on the gray scale also does not exceed two. At the same time, the VIERA TX-50CXR800 provides 10-point white balance and gamma calibration. After detailed adjustments, it is possible to obtain almost ideal indicators from the TV matrix both in the gray scale and in the main shades.

Panasonic VIERA TX-50CXR800

The Panasonic TV product line switched to the new Firefox OS operating system in 2015. At the moment, it cannot compete with Tizen, WebOS and Android TV in terms of functionality, but the Japanese have ensured full compatibility with applications from the previous firmware. In principle, the basic set of programs is quite sufficient for everyday use. What appeals most about Firefox OS is the ease of use and logical placement of all controls.
