Review of the HTC One X smartphone. The one and only? Review and testing of the HTC One X smartphone Htc one x dimensions

HTC One X, Asus Transformer Prime

As you can see, with the arrival of the One X, the primacy of Prime came to an end. In some tests the difference is almost 25%. So what should regular users do with this kind of performance? Wait and believe that the time will come when you say to yourself: “yes, now I’m starting to understand why a pocket device needs so many cores.” In the meantime, rejoice in the fact that only those who will not appear soon are cooler.

Considering such power, one cannot expect any pleasant surprises from the operating time. Nevertheless, they exist. Of course, it was not possible to achieve a significant increase in operating time, but taking into account the display and processor, you expect much more modest indicators.

Video

Bravo! HTC smartphones have learned to play video in any container and with any codec. All test videos started and played. The exception was the Spartacus file in the MKV container. The video worked smoothly, but there were problems with the Dolby AC3 sound. To be more precise, it simply did not reproduce. But third-party video players downloaded from Google Play coped with this task without any problems. So in this category, the One X gets an extra plus.

Music

Here I want to be as objective as possible, but maintaining neutrality is not easy. To everyone who is in thought " buy/not buy", we recommend taking your favorite headphones and going to the store to listen to music from HTC One X. All your doubts will be dispelled literally from the first seconds.

The only sobering pill from such positive impressions is the absence manual settings equalizer, but if the presets are not enough for you, you can always use a specialized application.

Display

This model was the first HTC smartphone equipped with a display with a resolution of 1280x720 pixels. The diagonal of the matrix is 4.7". Brightness parameters range from 12-335 cd/m². Thanks to the use of a new generation of tempered glass - Gorilla Glass 2, as well as the absence of an air gap between it and the display, the picture quality is one of the best among devices on the market. By quality we mean viewing angles, image smoothness, and natural color rendition.

According to HTC, the One X has a Super IPS matrix. In principle, other smartphones of this brand have never suffered from low-quality displays, but with the advent of One X it is quite recommended as an alternative to the one installed in Apple iPhone 4/4S reference Retina display.

On this moment The market for smartphones with HD displays is at the beginning of its development. The first one available to a wide range of users was a smartphone equipped with a tablet display with a resolution of 1280x800 pixels. Following him appeared Samsung Galaxy Nexus. Although both of these smartphones have high-definition displays, not everyone will like their color reproduction. The HTC One X display was the first with HD resolution among liquid crystal matrices made using IPS technology, famous for its good viewing angles, natural color reproduction and RGB filter. IN AMOLED displays Samsung uses PenTile technology, where a pixel consists of four elements: red, green, blue, green. This makes them far from the best in terms of natural color reproduction, but gives them the advantage of reduced energy consumption. The smartphone we reviewed Sony Xperia S, is equipped with a display with a filter containing four photosensitive elements. Only unlike the above displays, in the Sony matrix the fourth element is not a green, but a white photodiode. Since pure white color does not exist in nature, in order to implement it in a liquid crystal display, we also had to resort to some tricks. As a result, theoretically, the Sony Xperia S display should be the brightest, because to display any of the primary colors, not only the corresponding light element is used, but also a “white companion” not covered with an RGB filter, which additionally transmits ¼ of the light.

Camera

If you believe the advertising, and sometimes you really want to, HTC managed to create a unique camera phone, which at least should be better than those we have seen before. You become convinced of this when you start taking photographs and shooting videos with its help. A huge number of settings and effects turn this whole process into pure pleasure. The positive emotions are further enhanced by viewing the results on a stunning screen. But as soon as you open a photo you like on the monitor, you become sober. Yes, this is definitely a breakthrough for HTC, but it’s still not enough to compete with the leaders like Apple iPhone 4S, Samsung Galaxy SII and Galaxy Note. If we evaluate the quality of photos and videos on a scale of ten, the smartphone deserves a rating of 7. This is partly due to the presence large quantity additional settings, which, when compared with the ascetic iPhone, is simply manna from heaven. Adding advantages are the shooting speed, the ability to take photos while recording video and, in fact, a redesigned interface. Although all this except saving separate file images when recording video has already been implemented or will be implemented in devices of other brands.

Therefore, the HTC One X can be compared with the best camera phones, but it is not capable of surpassing them.

Results

Extreme sound, extreme performance, extreme interface - anything, but not the camera. Why HTC decided to focus on this part of the One X is not clear. Apparently, like me, they are gradually beginning to realize that quality is only part of the component of a successful shot. Of course, we're not talking about something on the level of the LG Optimus L3. Everything is much better here, it’s just not enough to say: “Wow! It is fantastic". But what pleased me was the huge number of settings that allow you to make photos more attractive.
The bottom line is best Android smartphone, capable of satisfying all, within reason, the owner’s needs. The recommended price for HTC One X is 6,500 hryvnia. For this money you can buy any smartphone with an HD display, from the Samsung Galaxy Nexus to the just released Sony Xperia S, but we give our vote to the HTC One X. It has everything necessary to be the best.

Launched on sale last spring, it was not a revelation. Unfortunately, poor optimization of the hardware played a key role, which did not allow the device to compete with the Samsung Galaxy S III, although there were all the prerequisites for this. However, new firmware was released regularly, the smartphone began to work faster, heat up less and last longer on battery power. It’s a pity that he didn’t appear like this right away; it would certainly have had a positive impact on the company’s financial performance.

At the end of 2012, HTC introduced an upgraded version of its top model. It received a processor based on the NVIDIA Tegra 3 chip, “overclocked” to 1.7 GHz, 64 GB of internal memory, a slightly changed design, and at the same time an updated version of the software. In addition, there are no longer the problems that the first buyers of the HTC One X encountered, so the device initially looks more interesting and attractive for purchase.

Design

The smartphone exactly repeats the HTC One X and, which appeared earlier. There are some features, but those who are not very knowledgeable about mobile devices, they are unlikely to understand at first that this is the most functional representative of the One line.

By the standards of the world mobile devices one year on the market is a decent age for any smartphone, when it becomes clear how successful the design idea was. Even after such a significant period of time, the shape of the One X+ looks attractive, among top-end smartphones it is one of the most attractive devices.

If previously polycarbonate with a smooth texture was used, now it has been replaced by rough plastic. This is noticeable, especially if you have the opportunity to touch both smartphones.

The dimensions have not changed at all, the numbers remain the same - it is 134.4x69.8x8.9 mm, weight 135 g. The design is monolithic, there are no removable parts, except for the microSIM card tray, which is removed using a special tool that included in the kit.

The sides turned out to be slightly beveled; they allow you to comfortably grasp the smartphone while talking or working with the device. There is a flat screen, but due to the cutout on the sides it seems that it is convex. A beautiful, interesting design technique.

At the top of the front panel there are holes for the speaker, which are made directly into the frame of the case. The front camera is located to the right. There are also light and proximity sensors, as well as led indicator to notify about events.

There are three controls touch buttons: back, home, task manager. The place chosen for them is convenient, everyone can be easily reached. There is a backlight that is always visible, and vibration can also be triggered when touched. Interestingly, the buttons are highlighted in red, as we have already seen on the Sensation XE.

There is a microphone at the bottom end.

The second is located at the top end, where there is also a 3.5 mm headphone output and a convenient screen lock button.

At the back there is a compartment for microSIM. It is placed in a special tray, which is securely fixed in the depths of the cases; it simply cannot fall out accidentally.

On the left is a microUSB port for cable and charging. You can connect an HDMI cable to it to display images on a large screen if you buy a special adapter.

On the right is a large and comfortable volume rocker with excellent movement.

The design of the back surface is quite simple. At the top, the 8-megapixel camera lens stands out, inscribed in a silver protruding frame, in which there is also room for a flash. At the bottom you can see the speaker holes, and to the right there are special contacts that serve to communicate with the docking station, which can be purchased separately.

Screen

The smartphone has a Super LCD 2 display with a resolution of 720x1280 pixels with a diagonal of 4.7 inches, pixel density is 312 PPI. In the sun, the image remains readable, although it fades within reasonable limits.

The resolution is “fair”, there is no PenTile here, so the picture is of better quality than in other models with HD screens released earlier. I liked the picture for its natural colors, large margin of brightness, contrast level and viewing angles. If blacks were displayed as well as SuperAMOLED, it would be just perfect. There is no air gap between the screen and glass, so the image is very pleasing to the eye.

To protect the surface, second generation Gorilla Glass is used, and there is an oleophobic coating. The automatic brightness adjustment sensor works well, as does the proximity sensor, which locks the screen during a call.

Filling

The processor is NVIDIA Tegra 3, which turned out to be a controversial decision, as practice has shown. On the first firmware, the One X got very hot, slowed down, did not work very well - a quick discharge tormented the owners of the smartphone. Subsequently, software ailments were compensated for by updates, but negative feedback significantly affected the model’s reputation. One X+ behaves well; the only noticeable phenomenon is the decent heating of the rear part of the case, if you actively use it mobile internet. However, this also occurs in other models. In general, the situation is good, and if the first generation devices had immediately entered the market like this, the company’s financial indicators would probably have been so sad.

As for the technical characteristics, they are as follows. There is a quad-core processor with an “economical” fifth core, the frequency is increased to 1.7 GHz. 1 GB of RAM available, 64 GB built-in. Such an array is rare, I think it will be more than enough for any user. Everything works quickly, the test scores are also high. The model received a more recent Android version 4.1.1 and Sense 4+.

Interface

At the top of the screen there is a service line, which displays the time, battery charge, and signal reception level indicator. Active connections and other data are also visible there. By clicking on a line, you will find out what programs have been downloaded, what messages and letters have been received, or what files have been received via Bluetooth.

HTC has created many beautiful and functional widgets. Each function has several design styles, such as clock or weather. You can choose between sizes, choosing the ones that are comfortable for you. You can place several widgets on each work area, it all depends on their size.

There are seven desktops in total, and if you like minimalism, then they are reduced to one. Scrolling between them is smooth, without delays, and there is no cyclic scrolling.

As before, HTC pays great attention to smartphone personalization. For this purpose, a separate settings section is allocated, where you can select a design theme, cover, and set a background image. The picture can be any image from the device’s memory, including animated “live” wallpaper. The basic equipment includes covers and stories, and when you want something new, you can visit the company store, where you can easily find stylish design.

The lock screen has retained all its functionality: the operator's name, time and date are displayed. At the bottom there are four icons, under which there is a metal ring, or rather part of it. As soon as you pull the virtual part up, the display will be unlocked. You can also decorate the lock screen in several ways. It displays various multimedia data: background image, notifications, pictures from a photo album, messages from social networks, weather, stock prices, contacts or clocks. Any of these eight listed applications is supplemented with animation and looks beautiful.

The menu consists of application icons, which are arranged in alphabetical order. 20 icons are displayed on one screen, areas with shortcuts scroll left or right with smooth animation. Sorting by date is also enabled: the newest or oldest are selected as priority for generating the list. Separate buttons stand out independently installed programs and frequently used applications. The tab at the top helps you access settings, search functions, and the app store.

The highlighted key launches a menu of running tasks, which are displayed in the form of thumbnail panels open windows.

Phone book

The general list shows contacts stored both in the phone memory and SIM card, as well as data from your Google account and social networks, which can be combined into one contact. There is a function for selecting the necessary data; it will hide unnecessary information.

When creating a new contact, the user provides a variety of information. This includes Various types telephone numbers, email addresses, means of quick communication (AIM, ICQ, Gtalk, Skype and others), residential addresses and other information (nickname, birthday automatically added to the calendar, note). The search works among contacts by the first letters of the first or last name.

By clicking on the space reserved for the subscriber's picture, you will launch a quick menu with which you can send a message, mail, or make a phone call to the selected person. You can also contact him using contact information from social networks. Numbers can be distributed into different groups, which are assigned an individual signal.

Calls

Directly from the phone book you have access to the call log - it is highlighted in a separate tab. There, a single list contains dialed numbers, received and missed calls. All telephone conversations fall into one list, where they are not grouped if several calls were made to the same number. Here you can only display incoming, outgoing or missed calls.

Dialing is carried out using a convenient virtual keyboard. By viewing your call history, you can not only make phone conversation with the selected subscriber, but also send him an SMS or letter via e-mail from this list without going to another menu. As you enter numbers, the phone automatically matches contacts by selecting from numbers stored in its memory or by searching by name. The phone has a speed dial, you can assign it to number keys up to 8 rooms.

Messages and mail

For SMS and MMS there is a shared folder, where received messages go. When you add various objects to the SMS, it will automatically turn into an MMS. Messages are grouped by recipient into a correspondence feed. Search works inside the message archive. When dialing a subscriber's number, the phone displays a list of matching numbers in alternating numbers.

The device can copy, cut and paste text. The font size in messages is set: small, medium, large, extra large. The received text can be forwarded to another number, moved to a SIM card, added to the calendar as a task, or blocked from receiving messages from this number in the future. There is an option for archiving messages; sorting by date and name works.

Intelligent input is available, when word correction and auto-completion systems help you type text, allowing you to avoid wasting time correcting errors. You can type text without lifting your finger from the screen; the smartphone will automatically substitute the appropriate words. This functionality is familiar from Swype. Possible word options are shown in a separate line above the keyboard. Voice typing is also well implemented. The keys are large in size and are accompanied by a pleasant vibration feedback, which can be turned off.

Job mail client very easy to set up. When activating the smartphone, data is specified account, which will be linked to the Gmail server. The smartphone understands various encodings and supports downloading attachments in familiar formats. The search works, the font changes, a caption is added to the text, the synchronization period and sound notification parameters are set. Implemented mail sorting by date, subject, sender and size.

Camera

The smartphone has an 8-megapixel F2.0/28 module with backlighting, autofocus and LED flash. There is no quick launch button; the simplest option is to set a shortcut on the lock screen to quickly start shooting. The flash options open at the top, and the shooting mode is activated at the bottom. The general idea remains the same: the keys for taking photos and videos are located on the right, and from here you can quickly go to the gallery or select effects.

Camera settings:

Image resolution: 8M (3263x2448 pixels), 5M (2592x1952 pixels), 3M (2048x1536 pixels), 1M (1280x960 pixels), 0.3M (640x480 pixels).

Review after shooting: 3.5 seconds, unlimited.

Exposition.

ISO: auto, 100, 200, 400, 800.

White balance: auto, incandescent, fluorescent, daylight, cloudy.

Face detection, automatic smile detection, 4:3 widescreen frame, geotagging, grid activation, shutter sound off.

Scenes: auto, HDR, panorama, portrait, group landscape, whiteboard, close-up, low light.

Video resolution: 1920x1080 pixels, 1280x720 pixels, 960x540 pixels, 640x480 pixels, 320x240 pixels and 176x144 pixels.

Videos are created in MP4 format with stereo sound, autofocus works, and you can also take pictures while recording video without interrupting the process.

The shooting quality is excellent, the camera performs well in various conditions, but you won’t be able to see any significant differences from the One X or One XL.

Player

When you open the player, which is highlighted in the menu with a bright red icon, you will see several icons. The first of them leads to the player itself. Also here is the SoundHound program, TuneIn Internet radio and 7Digital, which leads to the music store. Unnecessary shortcuts are removed from here, and new ones are added from the menu. This creates a separate group of all audio-related applications, which is quite convenient.

Just below, recently played songs are shown, as well as information about the currently playing song. By selecting the music section on your phone, the player menu itself will open. There are several criteria for sorting here: albums, artists, compositions, playlists, genres. In any case, files will be displayed on the screen, clearly highlighted by covers and signatures. The search and mixed playback function works. At the same time, the search function in the library will also come in handy.

When you select the desired album, the following menu will open. In it you can see the cover, information about the number of tracks, genre, year. The song is sent to a playlist or another device. Another menu brings up a large list of additional actions, where there is not only information about the song, but also the ability to set it as a ringtone.

While songs are playing, the screen displays the album, artist name, track title, duration and remaining time. The track is added to the playback queue and sent to an external device via DLNA. A convenient option for downloading covers is supported, which helps make the album presentable. The player works in both landscape and portrait modes.

By turning on sound enhancement using the Beats software option, you can see how the sound changes when listening to different music genres. It works with any headphones connected to your smartphone. There are also other sound profile options, but there are no manual settings among them: classic, bass boost, vocals, bass boost, live, dance, warmth, sweetener. If you listen to music with the keyboard locked, pressing a mechanical key will wake up the screen, then the display will display the player control menu and the album cover, if any. This is convenient and allows you not to go into the menu if you want to switch to another track. When the keyboard is locked, you can adjust the volume in the player using the side buttons.

The smartphone was tested with Triple Fi.10 Pro headphones, with which it showed good results. There is sufficient volume reserve here, there is no hissing high frequencies, clear and powerful bass, which will really appeal to fans of electronic music with an abundance of rhythmic sets. I liked the sound.

Radio

The radio receiver can independently search for stations and store them in its memory. At the same time, you can make a list of your favorites and quickly switch between them. There is RDS support, as well as a playback function through the phone speaker. You can rename stations in your phone's memory yourself. There is a SoundHound search, which works in radio or music player mode. It will help you quickly find detailed information about an interesting composition.

Browser

The browser works in both horizontal and vertical screen orientations. Thanks to multi-touch, pages can be easily scaled (virtual keys also work to change the size of what is displayed), the browser interface itself is clear and convenient. At the top there is an address bar, next to it there is an icon, clicking on which adds the page to bookmarks. At the bottom of the screen, an additional menu is called up in the form of a sliding panel, which allows you to open new windows.

The browser supports the function of simultaneous work with several pages involved. You can switch between them, refresh the page, view bookmarks and perform some other options (search by text, view downloaded files, and others). The address bar disappears as you scroll the page, but it may reappear as you scroll the site. It is very convenient that when pages are scaled, they adapt to the boundaries of the screen; they are pleasant and comfortable to view. Flash support is available; animation can be disabled if desired.

The browser works very quickly, pages load completely, even large tests with hundreds of screenshots are displayed without problems: when quickly scrolling through pages, despite the very high scrolling speed, the data is displayed instantly, without delay.

Gallery

All images from the smartphone’s memory go into the general gallery section, where they are presented in folders. The gallery works in both portrait and landscape mode. You can choose different criteria for viewing data by uploading images from Facebook, Flickr, Dropbox, Picasa or Skydrive. The settings specify hidden albums, the existence of which no one except the smartphone owner will know.

By clicking on the cover of the folder, the role of which is played by the last picture added to it, you can see the animation effect, after which it will open. The reaction speed is very high, scrolling is fast, without any hint of delay.

While viewing files, a slide show is activated, which is complemented by music. The picture is sent to various social networks, storages, in a message or via Bluetooth. It can be set as wallpaper, used for contact or added to your favorites list. The picture can be cropped or processed in the built-in photo editor, which has many beautiful effects available.

Video player

Declared support for video formats: .3gp, .3g2, .mp4, .wmv ( Windows Media Video 9), .avi (MP4 ASP and MP3), .xvid (MP4 ASP and MP3). The video is played in full screen and rewinded using separate keys. Compared to previous models, the smartphone began to play more files, but still a separate player would not hurt for better confidence. The player remembers where the video playback stopped in different files. The player adjusts the brightness level, and you can take a screenshot.

It is unlikely that anyone will argue with the fact that in the second half of last year, HTC was in search. From the very first devices on Android, the company shot too hard, but at a certain period even my interest in the new models began to decline; there was no special feature, or something. Most likely, the most important feature of former HTC smartphones – courage – has disappeared. In particular, this applies to device design. Another weak point of HTC smartphones has always been the camera. Just remember the Desire and Samsung Galaxy S models that competed at the time; the latter’s camera is still quite relevant today, while the Desire’s photos were of rather poor quality from the very beginning. The latest models did not stand out in performance either; the same Sensation and Sensation XE were quite inferior to the SGS2, and in the Sensation XL the display resolution was also small. But the expectation of something great remained and, as is now clear, not in vain.

If you go through all the described omissions of the company and look at new HTC One X, we get the following picture: incredible design, a good camera even by the strictest standards, one of the most powerful hardware on the market and a gorgeous display. What else does? Looking ahead, I’ll say that One X is definitely the brightest Android smartphone of all that was presented at MWC 2012 and, perhaps, the coolest Android on the market in general. Of course, this is just my opinion, but let me tell you why I think so.

I'll start with what creates the first impression - the quality of the case and design. By the way, I would really like to look at the packaging, since its design definitely deserves attention, but our copy arrived just like that. So, the design turned out great. Someone once wrote that creating a memorable and beautiful touchscreen candy bar is a difficult task, even Apple, releasing only one smartphone a year, changes the design every two years. Just remember something memorable that was released over the past six months, but not the Galaxy Note, it is memorable not because of its design. Of course, this is all a matter of taste, but basically all smartphones have become either parodies of each other or forgettable “remnants”. HTC One X is not like that. You don’t have to turn it on and just enjoy the shapes!

The color can be white or black, white seemed more expressive to me. Contrary to expectations, using a smartphone with a 4.7″ display is convenient; probably, the slight bend of the rear part played a significant role.

The body is non-separable, made of polycarbonate. If earlier HTC rolled out models with “unibody” aluminum cases, but which still opened something, now everything is fair: the battery is non-removable, the card micro SIM inserted into a special slot, like in an iPhone, the rigidity of the case is amazing. I’ll tell you a little secret: when a smartphone is provided by a representative office (not an online store), I check the case for strength like this: I hold the upper and lower parts of the case in my hands and start the “torsion test.” Most devices make unpleasant crunching noises; the Galaxy Note, for example, is bursting at the seams very much. The One X will most likely never have such squeaks, at least I can’t imagine why there would be a squeak.

The display is also a separate matter. The 4.7″ diagonal no longer seems too huge, and the resolution of 1280x720 pixels is becoming standard, but the One X set the bar here too. Yes, the density is not the same as in, but the picture quality is better: both the colors and viewing angles are excellent. I remember how and Sony Ericsson, and LG talked about the lack of an air gap, calling it cool names, HTC didn’t say anything, but simply made a display in which the picture literally lies on the surface, right under your fingers. Even in the iPhone 4/4s the effect is not the same; in the One X (as well as in other smartphones from the One line), no matter what angle I look at the display, the image remains on the surface and the colors are not distorted.

SuperLCD 2 display covered protective glass Gorilla Glass 2, the strength of which specialists from Corning demonstrated to everyone at CES 2012. The glass has curves on the right and left, as in Nokia Lumia. I'm glad that, unlike the Galaxy Nexus, the buttons do not “eat up” part of the usable display area; they are placed separately. But there are also two disadvantages: for the first time, after HTC Hero, I saw a green pixel, it is small, but when I noticed it once, the eye itself knows where to look; and second - I have already seen two reviews that the display is moving away from some angle. There are no other consequences besides the fact itself, but still.

Below the display there are three touch control keys: back, home and running applications. On top there is a speaker, an alert LED (under the speaker grille), light and proximity sensors, as well as a 1.3 MP camera with the ability to shoot video in 720p.

On the right we see only the volume key, on the left – the microUSB connector. By the way, it would be more convenient to place it at the bottom; it would be inconvenient to play Modern Combat with the charger connected!

At the top there is a power button and display lock, a headphone jack, a second microphone for noise reduction and a slot for micro SIM. It opens in the same way as on the iPhone - using the supplied paperclip. Or anyone else, for that matter.

At the back, in addition to the camera, there are five pins for connecting a proprietary dock and an external speaker. Despite the presence of the BeatsAudio logo, the headset included is a fairly standard one, not Beats.

Camera

The camera in this smartphone deserves special attention. HTC promised almost a revolution among camera phones. I won’t say that it was a revolution on a global scale, but definitely among HTC smartphones. As I already said, for many users it was the camera that was the stumbling block, because of which they had to abandon the purchase at the last moment in favor of Samsung, for example. The first sign with a pretty good camera was the HTC Sensation XL, but I, for example, would have been put off by the display resolution, build quality and the inability to shoot video in 1080p. The One X has none of the listed disadvantages, and the camera is even cuter. There is an 8 MP sensor with an HTC ImageChip image processor, which helps to “develop” dark photos, and videos are recorded up to 1080p. The interface of the standard camera has also changed; I can call it a brilliantly simple revolution. Agree, as often happens, when instead of a photo you get a second video on which it sounds “damn...” The interface of any camera in smartphones involves switching between photo and video modes using a special slider, but sometimes you need to quickly take a photo, but the video mode is set. In the One line, the camera screen has two buttons at once - both photo and video.

There are several new scenes when shooting photos, including HDR, which works better than standard HDR on the iPhone 4s. You can also take pictures with different color effects. The camera is incredibly fast, most likely the fastest on the market: the first photo is taken in 0.7 seconds, focusing occurs in 0.2 seconds. By holding down the camera button on the screen, continuous shooting will begin at a frequency of 4 frames per second. Upon completion, you will be asked to choose the best photo, and the smartphone does this at its own discretion, but you can help it. You can save all photos. At the same time, the photos are hardly inferior in quality to the current market leaders - iPhone 4s and Samsung Galaxy Note. No, the quality still doesn’t reach them, but still, this is a breakthrough among HTC smartphones. It’s not clear why at HTC presentations they compared the camera with that of the iPhone 4s, saying that the latter’s image quality is even inferior to the new flagship.

The video is not yet written as well as we would like. In particular, jerks and slow focusing when objects appear in the frame are not pleasing. But there is one more “killer feature”: you can take photos right while shooting! Again, brilliant!

The only drawback of the camera design is the lens glass; it is placed above the surface of the body and is not recessed inward at all, which means that scratches are very likely to appear on it.

BY

Finally, no compromises! Here you have Android 4.0.3, and the latest version of the proprietary Sense shell - the fourth. HTC, unlike everyone else, managed not to spoil Android 4, and, retaining all its features, even added ease of use. There is also the creation of a folder by dragging icons one on top of another, and a multitasking menu, and much more. The shell looks beautiful, all the intrusiveness from the third version was removed. For now, I can name only one downside: the inability to configure four settings on the lock screen. function keys, they strictly duplicate the four function keys on the main screen.

HTC One X specifications

Marketing has prevailed over reason and in the smartphone we see a quad-core Nvidia Tegra3 processor, with clock frequency 1.5 GHz. There is also a fifth core with a frequency of 500 MHz for performing undemanding tasks. Why marketing? It's simple. Even the Sense interface, which I praised, sometimes noticeably slows down when simply switching between desktops. Games? Yes, too, not everything is clear. It seems that there are 5-10 games adapted specifically for Tegra3, but there is nothing outstanding in them. At the same time, if you run them on a less powerful smartphone, there is no difference in fps and graphics. Honestly, I can’t imagine a game that will be developed exclusively for Tegra3, will be more beautiful than Infinity Blade 2, IB Dungeos, Sky Gamblers: Air Supremacy or Modern Combat 3 and will not be available for Tegra2 or Exynos in SGS2. But tests - yes, they show all the power, but who needs it?

RAM 1 GB, built-in 32 GB. Unfortunately, there is no slot for memory expansion, but 32 GB in the One X should be enough for anyone. The same cannot be said about the One S. In addition, DropBox provides all users of the new line of smartphones from HTC with 25 GB of cloud space, albeit for 2 years.

Autonomy

It seems that 1800 mAh is not small, but the display still takes its toll, the smartphone will last a day under average load, and even less if you actively use Twitter and email. Unfortunately, what’s frustrating is not the very fact of low autonomy, but the inability, if desired, to purchase an additional battery with a higher capacity, as people do, for example, with the Galaxy Nexus.

Conclusion

What can I say, like any smartphone on the market, the HTC One X has some controversial moments. If we draw a line under all of the above, I would include the disadvantages: the camera, although excellent in functionality, is slightly inferior in quality to SGN and i4s; unprotected camera lens; not the best better autonomy; non-customizable lockscreen in Sense 4; using Nvidia Tegra3. But this is nothing compared to all the advantages, I can safely recommend the HTC One X for purchase and in general, it seems to me that it best android smartphone today.

New HTC flagship with NVIDIA Tegra 3 and Google Android 4

One of the most anticipated smartphone innovations of this year has arrived on the Russian market - One X, the flagship of HTC. You may have already read our report from the Russian presentation of the One line, so we won’t list general things about the new line here and will focus on practical acquaintance with the HTC One X.

But before we start testing the device, let's take a look at it specifications and compare them with our main competitors. Of the models already on the market, these can be considered, first of all, Samsung Galaxy Nexus i9250 and Sony Xperia S: both of these smartphones are flagship, both with big screen, and both work under Android control 4.0. Of course, we cannot help but include the Apple iPhone 4S in the comparison. By the way, reviews of all the above devices have already been published on our website.

As you can see, the characteristics of all three Android smartphones are very similar to each other. At the same time, the Nexus i9250 is the cheapest of all, but it also has a weaker SoC. The most expensive is our today's hero HTC One X, but he also has the most powerful filling: We haven’t seen NVIDIA Tegra 3 in smartphones yet. But it’s difficult to compare the HTC One X (as well as other models) with the iPhone 4S. Because, for example, the presence of processor cores with a frequency of 1.5 GHz in the Sony Xperia S does not mean at all that this smartphone will be twice as fast as the iPhone 4S (with 800 MHz cores). The same goes for RAM. However, according to iPhone cost 4S from the official “white” deliveries is still the most expensive. So it makes all the more sense to take a closer look at Android competitors. The most current of which is HTC One X.

Design

The smartphone arrived to us for testing without any packaging, so it’s better to find out about packaging and accessories in the store before purchasing. We will focus on the design of the smartphone.

HTC One X is available in black and white. We tested the version with a white body, and I can immediately say that I did not like the appearance of the smartphone. Firstly, the white plastic looks cheap (unlike, say, the white iPhone 4/4S); secondly, the shape of the device is uninteresting and boring (compare with the same Nexus i9250); thirdly, the back surface of the Nexus i9250 is much nicer and more original to the touch than that of the HTC One X.

Another downside is the non-removable back cover (sometimes the only way to reboot a frozen smartphone is to remove and reinsert the battery; this is not about specific model, and about smartphones in general). The SIM card is inserted in the same way as in the iPhone - you need to insert a pin or paper clip into the small hole and press, after which the cradle comes out of the case. And yes, like the iPhone, it requires a Micro-SIM card.

Something unusual worth noting is the speaker for playing music and sounds on the back side. Judging by the number of holes, it is larger than many other smartphones, although it is clear that in any case the speaker of the smartphone will not the best solution to play music.

There is no support for SD cards. In principle, this is not such a big problem, since the built-in memory is 32 GB. But sometimes using microSD can be very convenient if, say, you need to transfer a movie from one device to another.

The situation with connectors is as follows: on the left side there is Micro-USB for charging and connecting to a PC. On the right side there is a volume rocker.

There is no HDMI, but the Micro-USB port supports the MHL (Mobile High-definition Link) standard, which allows you to output Full HD video and eight-channel audio to a TV/monitor with HDMI. However, this requires a special adapter. HTC has already used MHL in the Flyer tablet, and you can read some details about MHL in our review of that device.

The last thing I would note is the camera that rises above the back cover, surrounded by an aluminum frame. From the point of view of appearance, the solution is questionable, but functionally, it is probably quite justified.

Overall, I didn't find the design of the HTC One X to be very successful. His appearance is boring, ordinary, without any zest. It’s interesting what HTC’s designers were guided by when creating the One X. It’s appropriate to remember here that Apple first came up with the case, and then the engineers had to cram all the components into this case. HTC obviously has the reverse sequence. Or they approached the task without any enthusiasm.

In terms of convenience and functionality, the HTC One X exhibits the same disadvantages that the iPhone has: an inconvenient mechanism for placing the SIM card (it cannot be pulled out without improvised materials), a non-removable back cover, and the absence of a slot for a memory card. On the other hand, none of this interferes Apple device to be one of the most popular (and objectively best) smartphones. So it would not be entirely correct to blame the HTC One X for this. It's just worth considering these features when buying One X.

The weight of the device is 130 grams, which is quite normal for a male model.

Screen

The screen makes a very pleasant impression. The SuperLCD2 matrix provides good viewing angles, sufficient brightness and pleasant colors.

Comparison with the Nexus i9250 screen of a similar diagonal shows that SuperLCD2 produces slightly less saturated colors than Super AMOLED HD. Its black color is also not as black as the Nexus. But this is a common feature of all LCD displays (as opposed to OLED displays). In this case, we don’t think that the SuperLCD2 screen depletes the colors too much, but in general this is a matter of subjective feelings. Therefore, we advise you to simply take the HTC One X and any phone with an AMOLED display in the store before purchasing and compare the sensations. Perhaps you'll like the One X better.

Compared to the Nexus, the One X's screen has one advantage: the picture on it looks a little smoother, it's simply impossible to see any pixels.

The screen is capacitive touch, multitouch is supported, but by default - only two simultaneous touches. After the article was published, readers pointed out to us that support can be activated in the settings more simultaneous touches, but the meaning of this decision (disabling support for multi-finger multi-touch by default) remained a mystery to us.

Automatic brightness control works well, quickly adjusting brightness both down and up.

Physical dimensions of usable screen area: 10.4 × 5.8 cm. Diagonal - 11.9 cm (4.68 inches).

Performance

Let's start with benchmarks. The result in Quadrant Standard is remarkable: 4635 points.

This is an absolute record among smartphones.

In the SunSpider 0.9.1 browser test, the advantage of Tegra 3 is less obvious. And it’s time to admit that for powerful modern SoCs SunSpider is no longer so indicative. Their performance is quite sufficient for browsing the Internet and processing Javascript. Therefore, say, the browser can have a greater influence on the result than the SoC.

Note: for HTC testing One X and Samsung Galaxy Nexus i9250 used the stock Android browser, and iPhone 4S used Safari. The table shows the best results demonstrated by the devices.

It's amazing, but ASUS Eee The Pad Transformer Prime performed worse in this test! Thus, we can say that in terms of counting Pi numbers, HTC One X is still the absolute record holder.

In the comprehensive AnTuTu Benchmark, the smartphone scored 10043 points.

This, again, is an undoubted victory over other smartphones (including the flagships of Samsung and Sony), and the only loss here is to the ASUS tablet.

In the multi-platform GeekBench 2, the gap from competitors is not so impressive. However, as we have noted more than once, we have doubts about how correctly GeekBench behaves on non-Apple devices.

We tested graphics performance in NenaMark2 (v2.2). The result is expectedly excellent - 47.7 fps.

So, the benchmarks showed the unconditional leadership of the HTC One X among Android smartphones (comparing with the iPhone is more difficult, and we don’t yet have enough reliable tools for this).

Video testing

We were going to test the HTC One X for support for video formats (using our test method, an example of which you can see in the article about the Galaxy Nexus i9250), but failed. It's hard to believe, but the HTC One X doesn't have a native video player. We installed Dice Player (which NVIDIA employees recommend for testing Tegra chips) and MX Video Player, but both applications did not work entirely correctly. Dice Player simply crashed immediately after trying to start a video (any one), and MX Video Player could not play sound correctly. Perhaps this is a problem with the sample (we had a copy that was not from a commercial batch), but in any case the situation is alarming. As we remember, the ASUS Eee Pad Transformer Prime tablet based on the same NVIDIA Tegra 3 coped with playing test videos perfectly (provided that Dice Player was used). This means that in One X it is not a matter of the platform, but of the firmware. One way or another, we cannot yet recommend this smartphone for use as a media player.

After the publication of the article, we received a comment from representatives of NVIDIA: on their copies, Dice Player worked correctly and there were no such problems with video playback. In the near future we will try to check this on another copy of HTC One X and will update the article.

Operating system and applications

HTC One X is the second smartphone on Android 4.0 that came to our editorial office. However, what distinguishes the new product from its predecessor, the Samsung Galaxy Nexus i9250, is the presence of the proprietary HTC Sense 4.0 shell.

HTC continues to develop Sense and equips all new products with its shell. One X was no exception. The difference from the original Android 4.0 was manifested primarily in the organization of desktops, pre-installed widgets and the changed appearance of icons. The folder icons also look completely different (note the screenshot above).

It takes a while to get used to some changes - for example, the browser icon is very confusing; It's hard to find right away.

The latest viewing mode looks very interesting running applications: It is made three-dimensional (like Cover Flow in iOS). The only confusing thing is that in horizontal mode, application thumbnails “lie on their sides.”

HTC offers a range of apps beyond the ones that come with Ice Cream Sandwich by default. Among them office suite Polaris Office, allowing you to view, create and edit text files, tables and presentations, applications for receiving FM radio and Internet radio, as well as various useful utilities - for example, Task Manager. It can be very useful when you need to release RAM devices.

The “In the Car” application is very interesting. In fact, this is another shell, only significantly limiting functionality and focused on use while driving a car.

The general impression of HTC Sense and the pre-installed software is the following: essentially, there is nothing unique or expensive here, but it is obvious that the smartphone manufacturer wants to relieve the owner of a brand new device as much as possible. There is no need to look for third-party shells, all the necessary software is already installed (including useful little things like “Flashlight” and “Mirrors”). It is clear that all this can be found in the Google Play Store, and for free. But HTC saves its buyer from having to search.

On the other hand, purely aesthetically, HTC Sense is no longer as superior to the original Android 4.0 as it was in versions 2.x. I would even say that for my taste the Android on the Nexus i9250 is prettier. But this is a matter of subjective preference.

Camera

HTC One X is equipped front camera for video communication and a rear camera for taking photos and videos.

The manufacturer especially emphasizes the advantages of the rear camera. There really is something to be proud of. Firstly, according to the characteristics of the rear HTC camera is quite consistent with the modern flagship level. Doesn't surpass, but matches. Secondly, there are some additional features, which not all competitors have. First of all, this is continuous shooting. We hold down the shutter button - and the smartphone takes a machine-gun burst of pictures, from which it is then asked to choose the best one.

Here is an example of one image from the series (the original is available by clicking).

Regular shooting, of course, is also possible, and its speed is very high, as is the quality of the resulting images. As an example, we present a fragment of an image enlarged to 100% (click on the full image in original quality).

Note the low amount of digital noise. And although there is still room for improvement in clarity, overall the quality should be considered high.

Another picture (click on the full picture in original quality):

Shooting a page from a magazine also pleased me: the text is legible, you can quickly shoot documents or texts and then read them or recognize them with special programs.

There is a digital zoom, but its use does not have the best effect on the quality of pictures.

In addition, a number of effects are available (in addition to the standard settings).

Video can be shot in a resolution of 1920x1080 (the default is 1280x720). Example videos: how the camera handles small details in a long shot (29 seconds, MP4, 31.2 MB) and moving objects (29 seconds, MP4, 33.3 MB).

Overall, the camera is one of the strengths of the HTC One X.

Autonomous operation

Despite claims about the special energy efficiency of NVIDIA Tegra 3, it did not seem to us that this smartphone lasts any longer on a single battery charge than other Android devices. The owner of One X will have to recharge it every day.

You can watch a video on a smartphone without recharging for about 4.5 hours (MKV, 720p) - however, this is the result for our “incomplete” playback in MX Player without sound. And with a full processor load, the device will work for less than two hours, as shown by testing in AnTuTu Tester.

NVIDIA, represented by Irina Shekhovtsova (head of the PR service), commented on the situation with the energy consumption of NVIDIA Tegra 3 and the operating time of the HTC One X smartphone on a single battery charge:

Of course, thanks to the use of the fifth companion core, which operates at lower frequencies, in a number of scenarios, Tegra 3-based devices will be more battery efficient compared to previous-generation devices. But in general, so far we are not talking about a fundamental increase in time battery life, but about providing devices with greater performance and better capabilities without increasing their power consumption. The term “energy efficiency” in this context should be understood as best ratio performance per watt. The Tegra 3 platform is more energy efficient because it provides devices based on it with more resources, keeping their power consumption at the level of previous generation flagships. And, of course, it is worth distinguishing between the capabilities of the platform and the capabilities of the product on its platform. In fact, the battery life of each specific device greatly depends on the features of its design, display optimization, battery capacity, etc.

conclusions

So what do we end up with? Close-up of a man's smartphone with a large good screen, great camera and outstanding performance, but with a mediocre design, short battery life and strange problems with video playback. Does it deserve flagship status? Yes, if you evaluate the smartphone by its technical characteristics. Could this smartphone be of interest? regular user, who needs performance for specific tasks, and not as such? In our opinion, at the current price - hardly.

The same Galaxy Nexus i9250, which can be found for around 21-22 thousand rubles, looks much more attractive. And although it is significantly inferior in performance to the HTC One X, this does not affect the ease of use. At least for now. Yes, of course, an expensive device is worth taking “for growth”, and in this sense, the costs of Tegra 3 can be completely justified. But if Tegra 3 is what you really need, I would recommend waiting a while. Still, such productivity is of no use now. But soon other manufacturers will release smartphones based on this SoC. And some of the future new products may seem more attractive to you than the HTC One X.

HTC has given the world many legendary smartphones. For example, HTC Dream was the first in the world to receive an operating system Android system, HTC Advantage (x7500) became the first phablet, HTC Touch Pro personified the world of communicators, and HTC HD2, released in 2009, remained for several years perhaps the most popular smartphone in the world.

Reliable models with advanced capabilities were loved and highly valued by “advanced” users. However, over time, Apple, Samsung and numerous Chinese manufacturers took away significant market share from HTC. But the company remained true to itself - it produced high-quality smartphones with excellent characteristics, did not skimp on materials and assembly, and did not copy models from other brands.

HTC One X10 – a smartphone with good cameras and powerful hardware at a reasonable price. Traditional brutal design, high-quality workmanship, excellent battery life are its main advantages, and we will tell you about the other features of the HTC One X10 in our review, let's go!

HTC designers decided not to experiment with appearance One X10. The signature strict design is recognizable by the rounded corners and stripes located at the top and bottom. The body is made of aluminum, the camera is located in the center of the upper part, the logo is in the middle. The metal was painted in an unusual way: a diffusion method was used, in which paint molecules penetrate to the required depth inside the aluminum. As a result, the paint becomes part of the metal surface, which means that it will not be erased over time, and small scratches are unlikely to appear on the body - a very practical solution.

The smartphone screen is covered with 2.5D glass. Today this is a sign of good form for branded smartphones. HTC One X10 looks elegant and at the same time solid.

Below the screen there are three familiar keys - “Menu”, “Home” and “Back”, equipped with backlight. The power key (on the right side) has a textured surface. Nearby is a volume rocker. The fingerprint scanner is placed on the back cover (just below the main camera), and your index finger automatically appears on it when you pick up the smartphone. The microUSB port for charging and synchronization is located next to the speaker on the bottom end, and the 3.5 mm jack is on the top.

The diagonal of the smartphone screen is 5.5 inches, the frames are of medium thickness - when you hold the device in your hands, it is almost impossible to accidentally touch the touch area with your finger. The SuperLCD 3 matrix is a high-quality IPS panel with wide viewing angles and natural color reproduction.

The display resolution is high – Full HD (1920x1080 pixels), density is 400 dpi. On average, the human eye can discern 300 dots per inch of screen area, so the picture appears very realistic. When tilted, the display loses a little contrast, but this does not change the perception of the image. Under the sun's rays, you can lament a message and complete a level in the game.

The screen is protected from damage by tempered Corning Gorilla Glass 3. The oleophobic coating is of high quality - your finger easily glides across the screen, and fingerprints are erased in one motion. There is also an anti-reflective coating if you often use your smartphone outdoors - this is a very useful feature.

Performance

The basis of the smartphone is the Helio P10 chipset. This is MediaTek's first production platform to use TSMC's HPC+ 28nm process technology. It made it possible to reduce processor power consumption by 30% compared to its predecessors.

The chipset includes eight ARM Cortex A53 cores with a frequency of 1-1.8 GHz and a 64-bit ARM Mali-T860 graphics chip. Four processor cores are more productive, the other four are energy efficient. This solution extends the operating time of the smartphone without loss of power.

The HTC One X10 has 3 GB of RAM. Of course, this is enough not only for the fast operation of standard applications, but also for launching the latest games, simultaneous operation of the browser, instant messengers, navigation and several other applications.

The volume of permanent memory is 32 GB. This is more than enough for applications and music, but if you don't have enough space, there is a slot for microSD cards up to 2 TB.

Separately, we note the HTC BoomSound sound processor. It provides high quality sound when playing music of any style, both through the built-in speaker and headphones.

The cameras on the HTC One X10 are very decent. The resolution of the main module “OmniVision OV16880” is 16 megapixels, aperture – f/2.0, matrix size – 1/3.06 inches. Fast and accurate phase autofocus is implemented - what you need for shooting children and animals. The bright dual LED flash will improve the quality of shooting indoors and in the evening. Fully manual configuration mode is supported.

The results of photo and video shooting are on high level. During the day there is no noise in the frame, color rendition is natural at any time. In terms of night photography quality, the HTC One X10 also outperforms other smartphones in the “up to 25 thousand rubles” category.

By the way, video can be shot in FullHD resolution at speeds of up to 30 frames per second and, thanks to three built-in microphones, with stereo sound. And HTC One X10 allows you to save photos in RAW (DNG) format for subsequent professional processing.

Communications

HTC One X10 received a hybrid slot - you can install either 2 SIM cards or a SIM card and a memory card. The HTC One X10 chipset integrates a third-generation 4G WorldMode modem with support for Cat.6 LTE networks and frequency aggregation. It will provide stable communication and fast Internet access even in areas of poor reception.

In addition, the smartphone has Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n Dual Band and Bluetooth 4.2 modules, as well as a GPS adapter. “Cold” navigation start takes about 30 seconds, “hot” - 3-5 seconds. So you can connect accessories to the HTC One X10 without any problems, and it will replace the navigator.

Software

The HTC One X10 runs Android 6 in the proprietary HTC Sense shell. The system is convenient to use - everything is at hand, the menus are logical, the Russification is good. By the way, Android 6 works effectively with hardware, saving memory and battery power. Additionally, the Boost+ system is used, it optimizes the consumption of smartphone resources.

The smartphone supports proprietary HTC Connect functions. Swiping three fingers across the screen will play music or video on your external device. When you pick up your smartphone, the ringer volume automatically decreases, and if you turn HTC One X10 over, the call volume is muted.

Autonomy

The battery capacity is 4000 mAh – 1.5-2 times more than its closest competitors. It is enough for 25 hours of calls mobile network and 20 days standby time. The smartphone will allow you to continuously watch videos for 10 hours, surf the Internet or play for 6 hours. With average usage
