By default, after installing Windows (and this applies not only to Windows 10, but also to all others), the automatic update option will be enabled. By the way, the update itself is a necessary and useful thing, but because of it the computer often behaves unstably...
For example, it’s not uncommon to experience slowdowns, or the network may be overloaded (when downloading an update from the Internet). Also, if your traffic is limited, constant updating is not good, all the traffic may be used for tasks other than those intended.
In this article I want to look at a simple and quick way to disable automatic updates in Windows 10. And so...
1) Disabling updates in Windows 10
In Windows 10, the START menu has been implemented quite conveniently. Now if you right-click on it, you can immediately get, for example, to computer control(bypassing the control panel). What exactly needs to be done (see Fig. 1) ...
In the list of services you need to find " Windows Update (Local Computer)". Then open it and stop it. In the “Startup type” column, set the value “Stopped” (see Fig. 3).

It has a parameter AUOptions- its default value is 4. It needs to be changed to 1! See fig. 5.

What do the numbers in this parameter mean:
- 00000001 - Do not check for updates;
- 00000002 - Look for updates, but the decision to download and install is made by me;
- 00000003 - Download updates, but the decision to install is made by me;
- 00000004 - auto mode (downloading and installing updates without user command).
3) Setting up Windows Update
First, open the START menu and go to the “Settings” section (see Fig. 6).

1. Notify when a reboot is scheduled (so that the computer asks you before each update whether it is necessary);
2. Check the box next to “Delay updates” (see Fig. 10).

By the way, from time to time I recommend manually checking for critical and important updates. Still, Windows 10 is still far from perfect and the developers (I think) will bring it to an optimal state (which means there will definitely be important updates!).

How to disable automatic updates in Windows 10 - method 1
Windows 10 tools automatically detect, download and install updates on your computer.
On Win 10, you can disable updates in a way that disables the Windows Update service. This method works in all versions of Windows 10; it ensures that Windows updates are disabled forever.
Enter Administrative Tools from the Control Panel, or use an easier method: in the Windows Search field, enter the expression: “administration” (without quotes), and then open the Administrative Tools window.
In the “Administration” window, right-click twice on the “Services” shortcut.
In the “Services” window that opens, in the “Services (Local)” section, find the Windows Update service.
In the “Properties: Windows Update (Local Computer)” window, in the “General” tab, change the “Startup Type” setting to “Disabled”.
In the “Status” setting, click on the “Stop” button to stop the Windows 10 update service.
After this, Windows 10 updates will stop coming to your computer.
To enable the automatic update function, in the “Properties: Windows Update (Local Computer)” window, select the preferred startup type: “Automatic (Delayed Start)”, “Automatic”, or “Manual”.
How to disable Windows 10 updates using the Local Group Policy Editor - method 2
At this moment, let's see how to disable Windows 10 updates in the Local Group Policy Editor.
Please note that this method is not suitable for Windows 10 Home (Windows 10 Home) and Windows 10 Single Language (Windows 10 Home for the 1st language). This feature is present in older versions of the operating system: Windows 10 Pro (Windows 10 Professional) and Windows 10 Enterprise (Windows 10 Enterprise).
First you need to log into the Local Group Policy Editor. In the Windows Search box, type "gpedit.msc" (without the quotes), and then launch the editor.
Alternatively, you can enter the Local Group Policy Editor in the following way: press the “Win” + “R” keys, enter the expression “gpedit.msc” (without quotes) in the “Open” field, and then click on the “OK” button.
In the “Local Group Policy Editor” window, follow the path: “Writer Configuration” => “Administrative Templates” => “Windows Components” => “Windows Update”.
In the “Windows Update” section, find the “Setting automatic updates” item, right-click on it, and select “Change” in the context menu.
In the Automatic Update Settings window, enable the Disabled setting, and then click OK.
After this, the operating system will not search for, download and install automatic Windows 10 updates.
Disabling Windows 10 updates in the Registry Editor - method 3
The third way to disable Windows 10 updates is to make changes to the Registry Editor. This method works in all versions of Windows 10.
In Windows Search, type "regedit" (without the quotes), and then run the command.
In the Registry Editor window, follow the path:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\WindowsWindowsUpdate\AU
In the Registry Editor window, right-click on an empty space. From the context menu, select New and then DWORD Value (32-bit). Give the parameter a name: “NoAutoUpdate” (without quotes).
Right-click on the “NoAutoUpdate” parameter and select “Change...” from the context menu.
Enter the parameter “1” (without quotes) in the “Value” field and click the “OK” button.
To enable the update in Windows 10, you need to change the value of the parameter to “0” (without quotes), or simply delete the “NoAutoUpdate” parameter from the registry.
Enabling metered connections in Windows 10 - method 4
This method makes it possible to configure a metered connection in the Windows operating system if the network is accessed via Wi-Fi.
Follow these sequential steps:
- Enter system settings.
- From the Settings window, go to Network & Internet.
- Go to the “Wi-Fi” setting, click on the “Manage known networks” link.
- Select your Wi-Fi network, click on the “Properties” button.
- In the “Set as metered connection” parameter, move the slider to the “Enabled” position.

Disable access to Windows Update - method 5
In new versions of Windows 10, after the user disables it, after a while the Update Center service on the PC is forced to turn on. So we need to block Windows Update's access to Microsoft update servers.
First, disable the Windows Update service (see method 1).
- Follow the path: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM
- Right-click. select “New => “Partition”. Give the section a name “Internet Communication Management” (hereinafter without quotes).
- Click on the created “Internet Communication Management” section, create a new section inside called “Internet Communication”.
- Enter the “Internet Communication” section, right-click on an empty space.
- From the context menu, select New => DWORD Value (32 bits).
- Name the created parameter “DisableWindowsUpdateAccess”.
- Double-click with the left mouse button on the “DisableWindowsUpdateAccess” parameter. in the “Change DWORD (32-bit) parameter” window, select “1” in the “Value” field.
In the Registry Editor, do the following:
- Enter the section: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
- Create a "DWORD (32-bit) Value", name it "NoWindowsUpdate" with a value of "1".
Create a new parameter in the Registry Editor window:
- Follow the path: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate
- Create a "DWORD Value (32-bit)", name the parameter "DisableWindowsUpdateAccess" with a value of "1".
Close the Registry Editor window and restart your computer. When checking for updates, Windows Update will show error “0x8024002e”.
To enable access to Windows Update servers, delete previously created settings from the registry.
Turn off automatic updates from the command line
To stop and then disable the Automatic Updates service, use the command line:
- Run .
- Run the following commands sequentially:
net stop wuauserv
sc config wuauserv start= disabled
To start and enable the Automatic Updates service, run the following commands:
net start wuauserv
sc config wuauserv start=auto
Disable checking for updates in Windows 10
If all else fails, disable checking for updates in Windows 10. If automatic checking does not work, it means that updates will not be downloaded to your computer.
To disable checking for updates, follow these steps:
- Run Command Prompt as Administrator. In the command line interpreter window, enter the command and then press the Enter key: takeown /f c:\windows\system32\usoclient.exe /a
- Go to the path: C:\Windows\System32, find the file “UsoClient.exe”.
- Right-click on the “UsoClient.exe” file and select “Properties” from the context menu.
After this, restart your computer.
To restore the permissions of the "UsoClient.exe" file, run Command Prompt as an administrator, and then run the command:
icacls c:\windows\system32\usoclient.exe" /reset
Restart your computer.
If necessary, you can manually check for and install updates from Windows Update.

Cancel obtaining hardware drivers in Windows 10
If you come across hardware that is not entirely compatible, you can also disable receiving drivers. I only had this with the “ten” three times; usually I don’t turn this function off. Through the “Run” menu, enter the command rundll32 newdev.dll,DeviceInternetSettingUi (use Win+R):

The user must have administrator rights, otherwise the system will not allow you to change this parameter.
Is it possible to cancel an update in Windows 10 home edition through group policies?
In Windows 10, the Group Policy snap-in is only available in the Pro edition and higher. You can check whether it is possible to cancel delivery on your computer by calling this snap-in with the gpedit.msc command. We again use the Win+R key combination and insert the command there:
If the snap-in has opened, proceed further; if not, move on to the next chapter. So, here we also need to find the “Update Center”. To do this, open one by one the folders “Computer Configuration” - “Administrative Templates” - “Windows Components” - “Update Center”:

Cancel receiving “dozens” updates via a metered connection
In conclusion, another official way not to receive updates is to indicate your connection as a metered connection. The system will think that you are accessing the Internet, for example, through a 3g modem, and since money is withdrawn there for the received/
transferred volume of information, it will not be profitable for you to spend traffic on “patches”. Everything is done very simply. Right-click on your connection icon and select as in the picture:

We mark our connection as metered by enabling the required setting:
All. If you have a local network, you may additionally need to disable delivery over the local network. Also, if you do not forget to “unpause it”, synchronization will be paused.

How to quickly abort an update
If you want to quickly abort a Windows 10 update, depending on its stage, the first thing you need to do is the following:
- if the update has just started downloading, disconnect from the Internet;
- if the update has downloaded and the system asks to restart to apply it, do not do this under any circumstances;
- If, when you turn on/off/restart the system, installation or application of updates begins, turn off the computer by holding down the power button on the case.
Regardless of the option you are faced with, all further steps will look almost the same. Now you need to start canceling the update that has started. For the last problem, start the system in safe mode.
Starting the system in safe mode
Starting the system in safe mode is guaranteed to help start the computer without installing downloaded updates.
If you skipped downloading updates and turned off your computer, canceling them will pose some difficulties: every time you try to log in, an attempt will be made to apply the updates. This problem has been fixed in later versions of Windows 10, but it's best to start your computer in Safe Mode just in case.
How to cancel an update
The described method is suitable for quickly interrupting an ongoing update. Now the update needs to be canceled so that you can safely turn on the Internet or restart your computer.
There are several ways to cancel an update that has started. For example, enable a metered connection or Airplane mode. However, such methods will only interrupt the downloading of new packages and will not prevent the installation of already downloaded ones. The only way to guarantee that an update has started is through the command line.
To resume the update, you need to repeat the above commands, replacing stop with start.
How to permanently disable downloading updates
The method mentioned in canceling the update also includes prohibiting further system updates. But there are others that will be more convenient and reliable in the long term.
Via Group Policy Editor
This method will not work for the home version of Windows and some unlicensed versions of the system, but by using it you will retain the ability to manually run system updates.
Through services
This method is available on all versions of Windows, but it completely prohibits system updates: you will not be able to download updates even by running the scan manually (the scan will run, but will not be able to find anything).
Via Registry Editor
This method can be considered the most correct, but also the least safe: it makes changes directly to the system configuration, and you can cancel it only by doing the same steps again. If you intend to use this method, save the path to the parameter you are changing somewhere so that you can roll back the changes.
Via Windows Update
Blocking updates through Windows Update is official, but it is also the least reliable. In this way, you will mark your own Internet connection as metered: updates are not downloaded through such connections in order to save traffic.
