In order to continue working with a previously created document, you need to open the corresponding file. There are several ways to do this, the simplest of which is to double-click the left mouse button on the file icon in the Windows Explorer window. This will automatically launch Microsoft Visio, and the document you specified will be opened in it for editing.
Visio files can be easily recognized by their characteristic blue icons; in addition, if you are working with Windows 7, the Explorer window will present small copies of the diagrams and diagrams contained in the files (Fig. 2.8). If Visio is already running and ready to go, you can open an existing document using the command File → Open or buttons Open located on the toolbar.
By calling this command or clicking on the button, you will see on the screen the document selection window shown in Fig. 2.9. Go to the desired folder, left-click on the desired document and click the button Open.
If your chosen folder contains many different files, you can “filter” the files of the desired type using the drop-down list located in the lower right corner of the window. By default, All Visio Files is selected in this list, which allows you to display only files in formats that are fully supported by this program.
If your computer has Windows Vista or 7/8 operating system installed, then to search for a file you can enter part of its name in the field Search, located at the top of the window.
Selecting the item Open or Open original, you can start working with files as usual. Changes made to a document during the editing process will be saved in the same document. If you do not want the changes to affect the original document, select the command Open as copy. In this case, the document will receive a new name immediately after opening, and its editing will not be reflected in the source file. A copy of the document with a new name will be located in the computer's RAM. To write it to disk, use the command File → Save or File → Save As.
Another way to protect the source file from being accidentally saved in a modified form is to open it read-only. This can be done using the Open for Reading command from the Open button menu (see Figure 2.10). When you try to save an edited document, you will be prompted to choose a new name for it.
The best way to protect important documents from accidental changes or damage is to back them up promptly. If such copies are stored outside the computer, for example on CDs, then they will be reliably protected not only from careless editing, but also from equipment failure or infection by computer viruses.
For even greater user comfort, Microsoft Visio stores information about recently edited documents, as well as the templates used to create new diagrams. A list of three recently used templates is presented in the central part of the program window in Fig. 2.11. On the right side of the window there is a list of documents recently opened for editing. In addition, a list of recently opened documents is in the menu File(see Fig. 2.12). Using the appropriate command, you can quickly open the desired document.
VSD Viewer is a program for viewing files created in Visio.
Usage
This solution will be useful for those who need to view various diagrams and flowcharts, but do not need to install the program itself (Microsoft Visio). Being free, VSD Viewer allows such users to avoid the need to purchase an expensive software license from Microsoft.
Functional
Please note that this program is a regular viewer. That is, you cannot edit documents in it. The main function of the "viewer" is to view documents. However, VSD Viewer also offers several less important, although quite useful, features. For example, when viewing a document, you can scale and rotate it. If the working file is large, it would be wise to use the built-in search engine to quickly find the desired element using keywords.
Among other things, VSD Viewer, if you have a printer connected to your PC, can print files and send them by email. It is also worth noting that using this program, you can work not only with files in the VSD format, but also with RFT and TXT documents. And, due to the fact that the documentation will be opened through a browser, Internet Explorer must be installed on your computer. This is perhaps one of the most significant disadvantages of the viewer, because this solution from Microsoft is no longer very popular these days.

What is the .VSD file format used for?
File extension .vsd Associated with the Microsoft Visio Document (VSD) file type/format. Microsoft Visio is a vector graphics application that is part of the popular commercial Microsoft Office suite. To save Microsoft Visio documents, it uses the proprietary VSD binary format, which is the default in all versions of Visio prior to Visio 2013.
File .vsd is a Microsoft Visio document (2000-2013). It stores data in binary form for a diagram, flowchart, organizational chart, or other drawing made using Microsoft Visio. Programs for opening or converting VSD files
You can open VSD files with the following programs: Files with the VSD extension are Visio diagram files. Microsoft Visio is used to create process diagrams, shapes, templates and other materials, but the VSD format is used specifically for diagrams.
How to open a VSD file?
There are several ways to do this and several programs that support displaying VSD files, but we will look at the simplest and most common method.
First you need to download and install. The installation is very fast, and in the installer you only need to accept the license agreement, then everything will be done automatically.
This program does not have its own interface, but is an add-on for Internet Explorer. Visio Viewer version 2010 works with browsers 5, 6, 7 and 8. And the new version 2013 requires 8, 9 or 10.
Once the program is installed, you can open VSD diagrams by double clicking on the file. Internet Explorer will open and for the first time the browser will ask for permission to activate the add-on by clicking on the lines at the top of the window.
Now we can view any VSD charts through Microsoft's browser.
When viewing diagrams, we can zoom in without losing quality, because Visio creates vector images. At the top of the toolbar there are several buttons that represent, in general, the entire functionality of the program.
We can select any object and view its properties. In properties, we can, for example, enable or disable layers, thereby operating with the visibility of certain elements.
