The Beeline provider, in order to keep up with others, decided to release its own router, which connects to networks of this operator configured in a couple of clicks. Offered under the name Smart Box router built on a unified Realtek 8197D processor and equipped with 64 MB of memory.

In fact, all the complaints that there may be about the operation of this device relate rather to the firmware. We hope it will be fixed soon. Let's look at how a branded Beeline router needs to be configured, and also how to update its firmware.

Router "Beeline Smart Box"

On the rear panel, in addition to the standard set of ports and the power button, you see an operating mode switch. The “router” mode is activated when the toggle switch knob is in the up position. The second mode is “switch”.

We will look at how to set up a connection with the Beeline provider. To do this, you can connect a computer to the router via a patch cord or via a wireless network (which operates in mixed mode b/g/n, it is named “Smart_box-…”). Finally, we will look at how to update the firmware. The firmware version current at the time of creation of the review is 2.0.19.

Connection setup

As is easy to understand, you need to connect the Beeline cord connector to the WAN port. You can access the router’s web interface from a wired or Wi-Fi network (the latter works without a password).

The actions should be as follows: having connected all the cables, supply power to the router, wait 1 minute, open the web interface. The requirement for setting up a network card is to set the “automatic” mode:

Setting up a wired connection on your computer

On wireless cards, they also enable a similar mode (“auto” DNS and IP). The parameter values needed to open the web interface are given below.

How to open the GUI?

If a wired network is used to configure the router, the patch cord is connected to one of the LAN ports. To LAN card received IP and DNS from the router, you need to right-click on the connection icon and click “Fix”. You can connect to a wireless network without a password; its name is “Smart_box-XXXXXX”.

Let us remind you that the router takes at least a minute to load. The graphical interface address of Smart Box is standard and equal to 192.168.1.1. The default password is the same as the login, this is the word admin:

Login GUI

Setting up a connection with Beeline

While on the start tab of the interface, click the “Quick setup” button. The following page will open:

Connection setup

Here you need to set the parameters:

  1. Subscriber login of the form “089XXXXXX” (read the contract)
  2. The subscriber's password is what is specified in the contract
  3. “Network name” – you can leave it as is
  4. "Password" - meaning Wi-Fi password(may not be used at first)
  5. We will not enable the guest Wi-Fi network
  6. Select one LAN port for the TV set-top box, if required (just not the one that is currently in use)
  7. Click “Save”

Firmware update

The built-in program for the router, that is, the firmware, can be downloaded from the official Beeline website. The firmware file takes 16 or 17 megabytes. Save it to your “desktop”. Next, we will look at how to reinstall the firmware in a Smart Box router, and most importantly, how not to make things worse.

Preliminary actions

It is best to perform a factory reset before updating the firmware. Turn on the router, wait 2 minutes, press reset with a paper clip (the button must be held for 10-15 seconds). The LEDs should blink, then the router will boot again (but with the default settings).

We will install the firmware by connecting the router to the PC via a wired network. It is necessary. Reinstalling the software is carried out for the sole purpose: to rid the router of the “bugs” of the previous firmware. If everything works well, there is no need to reinstall anything.

It is important to know that while transferring the firmware file, you cannot turn off the power or break the connection between the devices. After the installation is complete, it is better to wait another 5 minutes, and only then briefly press reset.

We update the firmware via the web interface

Go to the configuration GUI as discussed above. On the start tab, click the “Advanced settings” button. Then, select the “Others” tab -> “Software Update”:

Reinstalling the firmware

Sequencing:

  1. Click “Select file”, find the file on the “desktop” and click “Open”
  2. Check the connection again and click “Update”
  3. Wait for the reinstallation to complete
  4. Wait 5-6 minutes
  5. Briefly press the reset button on the router

Happy setup!

In our city, the Internet provider Beeline began connecting subscribers via so-called “fiber to the home” - FTTB - in parallel with Rostelecom. Dom.ru didn’t even exist then. At first they offered different models WiFi routers flashed with proprietary firmware - D-Link DIR-300, TrendNet, NetGear, etc. Then came new model, which gradually replaced the others - this is the Smart Box router. As it turned out later, this is actually the only good branded router not only from Beeline, but also among competing providers.
Setting up Smart Box yourself is very simple and there is no need to call a specialist. Now I will tell you how to do this.

Login to the configurator interface:

Device IP address in local network(), as well as login and password to enter the configurator ( admin/admin) can be found on the sticker located on the bottom of the case:

After that, open the web browser and enter the address - http://192.168.1.1. Press the Enter key and see this greeting.

Click on the “Continue” button and see this authorization form:

Enter the login admin, password admin and get to the start menu Smart settings Box from Beeline.

Basic setup of Smart Box

In the start menu we need to call the configuration wizard, for which we click on the “Quick setup” button:

This will take you to a page where everything is collected required parameters. Honestly, as far as I remember, this was done by Dom.ru. On devices from Rostelecom and TTK, everything is much more complicated and confusing for an untrained user.

In the “Login” and “Password” fields you must enter data for authorization in Beeline billing. The account number is used as a login in our area. I think that this is how it is organized in other areas.
In the “Network name” field, you need to come up with and enter the name of your home network Wi-Fi on Smart Box. In the “Password” field, you also need to enter a key phrase that the router will request when connecting to its Wi-Fi.
If you have also connected Beeline television, then in the very bottom section of the menu, called “Beeline TV”, you should mark the LAN port into which the set-top box will be connected. Click on the “Save” button.
That's all. You can check the operation of the device!

If something is unclear, watch the video instructions.

Smart Box firmware

As with any other router, you need to periodically update the firmware on the Beeline Smart Box to a more recent one. This measure is necessary, since new firmware versions fix problems that were present in previous ones. You can download the latest version on the official Beeline website - link.

In order to reflash the Smart Box router, you need to click on the “Advanced settings” button in the start menu:

In the window that appears, you need to open the menu section Other >>> Software update:

Click on the “Select file” button, find and feed the firmware file to Smartbox. Now you need to click the “Update” button. The following image will appear:

After the process is completed, the router will reboot itself. The settings are usually not reset. But even if they reset, don’t be alarmed, following the instructions above you can set everything up yourself without any problems!

Working with other providers

Nowadays, switching from one telecom operator to another is a completely common procedure. Everyone is looking for a cheaper tariff, higher speed, and better conditions. This is understandable and quite normal. Router Smart Box is locked to Beeline. But if you have a Superuser password, then you can configure it for other providers. And at the same time, everything is done using standard software and no alternative firmware is required. User login with elevated rights is SuperUser. The password for firmware up to and including version 2.0.24 is Beeline$martB0x. After version 2.0.25, the superadmin password was changed. Now the serial number of the device of the type SF********* is used in this capacity. You can see it on the sticker. For example, on my device it is like this - SF13F4FF1F78.
Next we open Advanced settings >> Other >> WAN. Smartbox works without problems with almost any other provider. Here is an example of its configuration under Rostelecom and Dom.ru:

The router supports virtual networks VLAN, which means there will be no problems with interactive TV from Rostelecom, TTK, and Dom.ru!

Firmware update

First, determine the revision of the router!

1. Revision B1/B2/B3 with firmware versions from 1.2.100 to 1.2.119: current firmware 1.2.120
If the router revision B1/B2/B3 has a software version lower than 1.2.100 (1.2.99 and lower), then you need to update first to 1.2.100, THEN to the current firmware 1.2.120
For revision B5/B6, you need to update to firmware 1.2.254, then to the newer 1.2.255

2. The D-Link DIR 300/NRU router revision B1/B2/B3/B5/C1 works correctly on the Beeline network only with specially developed firmware from D-Link. This firmware optimized by D-Link specialists to work on our network.
if you have D-Link router DIR 300/NRU revision B1/B2/B3/B5/C1 with factory firmware, you can update the firmware to customized one at the nearest D-Link service center, the update procedure is free, you will need the device itself and a valid subscription agreement.
Please note that services for restoring unsuccessfully flashed routers and returning from customized firmware to factory firmware are provided at the D-Link Service Center on a paid basis.
For routers revision C1, after a successful firmware update, you need to reset the router by pressing the RESET button on the side panel for 30 seconds. After this, produce standard setting router.
Do not install firmware for DIR-300/NRU hardware revisions B1, B2, B3 on a DIR-300/NRU router with hardware revision B5. This leads to the router not working.

3. Open your browser and enter 192.168.1.1 in the address bar. The router will prompt you to enter your username and password. Enter admin in both fields. Click OK.

5. On the left side of the menu, go to the “System” section, then the “Software Update” subsection. Click on the “Select file” button and in the window that appears, select the file with the firmware. Click the "Update" button.

6. Wait while the router updates the firmware and reboots, this process may take up to 5 minutes. During this time, do not unplug the router from the power supply.

Reset

Use a hard reset if you need to configure the device again (delete all user settings), there is no access to the web page of the router settings interface, after setting up the router, the Internet connection was not established or the access password was lost.
