Editor's note: So, it's finally happened. Following the trends of the times, our portal will now sometimes contain not only news about mobile devices, but also their reviews. We immediately hasten to reassure our readers: smartphones/tablets and other wearable technology will not be tested to the detriment of computer hardware; no one plans to reduce the number of reviews of the latter. But we need to keep up with progress, so the laboratory will sometimes also consider the most interesting mobile devices. And the first relevant review is in front of you.

Introduction

The shelf of inexpensive but beautiful HD smartphones has arrived! The Vobis Computer company has started selling its new smartphone Highscreen Alpha Ice.

First of all, it is interesting because, at a cost of only 10,990 rubles, it has a high-quality IPS screen matrix with a resolution of 720x1280 pixels. Moreover, the choice of solutions with similar characteristics in this price category is small; these are mainly non-branded Chinese models that are sold unofficially in Russia.

Another feature of the smartphone is its design and dimensions. The phone turned out to be very thin and compact, the display diagonal is 4.7 inches. Thus, the developers of this model ensured that Alpha Ice, among the variety of devices with similar technical specifications, stood out favorably due to its ergonomic parameters, IPS matrix and minimalistic design, somewhat reminiscent of Apple iPhone 5.

Add to this two SIM card slots and expandability internal memory with help MicroSD cards, and you get a very “tasty” set of characteristics. However, only testing will show how it all works together.

It's time to check how "ice" this phone is.

Packaging and equipment

The packaging design style of the latest Highscreen models has changed somewhat. And, in my opinion, this happened for the better. The box is compact and rectangular, its dimensions are 37 x 97 x 203 mm, the predominant background is matte black.

On the front side, the silhouette of a smartphone appears in two angles, most likely made using embossing. Next to it, in small font, are the main specifications devices. Below is a reminder about free 20 GB in cloud storage 4Sync service and the manufacturer’s website Highscreen.org.

There are no inscriptions on the ends of the box. The model name is printed on the sides, and on the right side there is a sticker with technical markings: device brand, barcodes, model, certification marks and IMEI numbers with serial number.

On the back of the package there is a QR code leading to the manufacturer’s website, certification marks, a barcode and an inscription notifying us that the smartphone was developed in Russia, by the Highscreen company (Designed by Highscreen in Russia), and manufactured in China.

It remains to be noted that the box is made of thick and durable cardboard, very pleasant to the touch, looks stylish and expensive.

It's time to look inside. As soon as we pull out the inner part, which is made of thick cardboard, the eye falls on the device, located in the niche of the cardboard box divider and packed in a shipping bag. There is a film on the screen on which the main technical characteristics and features are indicated.

The delivery set is located under a cardboard divider with a niche for a smartphone. It includes:

  • Micro-USB cable;
  • Brief instructions with a warranty card;
  • Stereo headset;
  • Charger with input voltage from 100 to 240 V and frequency 50/60 Hz. The output voltage is +5 V, with a current of 1 A;
  • Additional replaceable cover in white, slightly pearlescent color.

There is nothing else interesting in the box.

Appearance and design

The smartphone is available in one color, but with two back cover options: black and white. In my opinion, the black color creates the impression of greater thoughtfulness and completeness; the device looks more interesting than with a white cover.

The device in question vaguely resembles Apple design iPhone 5, the same neat and small “brick”, but made of plastic and with Android on board.

The dimensions of the device are 138 x 66.7 x 7.5 mm, weight – 120 g. Despite the fact that there are lighter smartphones, Alpha Ice feels like fluff in the hand. And thanks to its small size, it fits very comfortably in the palm of your hand. To reach the top of the display, the phone does not need to be “rolled” across your entire hand.

For the back cover, glossy plastic of white pearlescent color is used, in another version - black plastic. This one is already matte (but without the rubberized soft-touch coating). This type The plastic is quite pleasant to the touch. Much better than many Korean phones, which use a glossy and extremely easily soiled plastic coating. The device does not tend to slip out of the hand on its own, but the danger of dropping the device through carelessness still exists, since the plastic itself glides well in the hand.

The boundaries of the front panel abruptly merge with the plastic ends, resulting in a small edge being formed along the contour. The edging of the device is made of the same matte black plastic. And due to the fact that the black version is made in a matte finish, the lid does not immediately become stained with fingerprints, and small scratches on it are not noticeable. It is not difficult to wipe off fingerprints from the lid; an ordinary “microfiber” cloth can easily cope with this task. Of course, over time, with prolonged daily use, small abrasions may appear along the edges.

All parts were painted with high quality; I did not find any chips or other defects.

The display is covered with a protective glass panel - it is not Gorilla Glass, but it is also very durable and did not get scratched after two weeks of active use of the smartphone. The surface of the glass is easily soiled, marks are visible, but are erased relatively easily. There is no oleophobic coating on the device, but the finger glides well.

The front panel of the smartphone features a speaker covered with a plastic mesh, light and distance sensors, a 3 MP camera, and a 4.7” display. Three touch buttons“Back”, “Home” and “Menu”, indicated by dim white backlighting. If you disable it, then these keys can only be found intuitively.

On the back there is a 13 MP camera with dual LED flash, a loudspeaker and an additional microphone. On the right is the volume rocker and power button, on the left is empty, at the top is a 3.5 mm headphone jack, at the bottom is a conversational microphone and a Micro-USB port.

The device is assembled normally. Regardless of which socket is placed on the smartphone, there are no creaks or backlashes. The case does not crunch when compressed or twisted. But it must be said that the cover is pressed down the center to the battery. It gives the impression of emptiness under the lid. The latter must be opened carefully, as the legs holding it may be damaged.

To open the cover, you need to pry it by the notch on the lower right side. The lid is light, looks quite durable, and bends well.

Just above the battery there are three slots. One for a standard large SIM card, and to the right is a slot for installing a Micro-SIM. On the left side of the smartphone, relative to the SIM card slots, there is a slot for installing a MicroSD memory card, however, for some reason it is skewed. I hope this is a feature of only my test device.

Display

Highscreen Alpha Ice has a display with a diagonal of 4.7 inches (physical size -58 x 104 mm). The resolution is high - 1280x720 pixels (HD) and is the standard for modern smartphones. Density – 320 pixels per inch, naturally, pixelation is not visible.

The matrix is made according to IPS technology using OGS (One Glass Solution) - production technology touch displays without an air gap between the touchscreen and the display panel, the principle of which is to combine protective glass and display elements into one. Besides that this technology allows you to make the display thinner, it increases the viewing angle and improves readability in bright sunlight. And the display itself belongs to the highest grade screens (A-Grade).

The image quality is very decent, the rich but natural colors are especially pleasing.

Screens for Highscreen Alpha Ice are produced by Sharp, famous for its IPS matrices. The quality of the screen is really excellent and practically does not differ from the quality of matrices in more expensive models from other manufacturers. Angled Alpha Ice shows good results in terms of color rendering, viewing angle and contrast.

Below you can see the advantages IPS display at an angle.

The brightness of the backlight of the Alpha Ice matrix is relatively high, the information is quite readable in the sun.

If we had no complaints about data transmission in the MTS and BeeLine mobile networks with which we tested the device, everything was within the “reference” values for modern device, then searching for GPS satellites with the mobile network turned off caused a little confusion: a cold start in moderate clouds took almost a minute and a half.

Battery

Let us remind you that the device has a non-removable battery, which with an average user load, including 30–40 minutes of calls, 20–25 messages, periodic checking of mail and social networks, as well as shooting with a camera, will last about a day. Reducing the use of the mobile network and Wi-Fi will slightly increase the indicator, but disabling the second SIM will not, but this is not surprising, since there is only one radio module in the device.

Competitors

Oppo Mirror R819

The first competitor can be called Oppo Mirror R819. With a similar processor and a slightly higher price, the device from the Chinese manufacturer is non-separable and does not support memory cards. A camera with a more modest performance characteristics still produces more interesting images. In terms of battery - parity, but OPPO cares much more about the shell.

We have already reviewed a fairly wide range of devices from the company Vobis Computer, which is also the owner of the Highscreen brand, and over all this time there has been a clear trend towards systematic improvement of devices coming from the pen of the Russian-Chinese alliance. First we dealt with the performance and operation of the interface, then with the build quality, and now it’s time for materials and appearance, because Alpha Ice almost completely copies the well-known Apple iPhone 5.

This is exactly the impression one gets about the device initially, especially after viewing the files attached to its announcement. Having gotten to know this smartphone more closely, you begin to notice that there is something “of your own” here, and the appearance features similar to Cupertino’s creation blur and become less obvious. There are many differences, and the first is the body materials used, here it is plastic. In general, it’s difficult to spoil good blood and noble manners with a little pepper, and nothing has been spoiled here at all - the ends are framed by smooth (not to be confused with glossy) plastic, and back panel black color is made from its matte subspecies. It’s worth making a note here, since there are two versions (covers), both of which are supplied with the device; In addition to the already mentioned black, there is also a white one, and it is made of glossy plastic. I didn’t think I’d say that, but in this particular case, this type turned out to be better than its matte counterpart, since, unlike it, it does not collect fingerprints (even if they are easily wiped off in the black iteration), and thanks to it you can hold a smartphone in your hand fits like a glove. The amazing is nearby, nothing less.

By the way, the manufacturer of the device was a certain company Cellon, which can be found out when installing applications via the web interface Google store Play:

In general, a lot of attention was paid to the exterior here; there are no unnecessary lines or details that distract attention and destroy the integrity of the picture. Thin and light (7.5 mm, 120 g), well-cut and tightly knitted block leaves an extremely positive impression of communication with itself, and the small thickness here only plays into the hands of the device, allowing you to easily operate it with one hand, despite the display with a diagonal of 4.7 ″ manufactured by Sharp, under which there are three touch keys “Menu”, “Home”, “Back” (the backlight is uneven and dim).

By the way, a few words about it - we have already said in previous issues of cedarcast that now almost all famous (and not so famous) Chinese manufacturers have begun installing high-quality IPS panels in their devices, and Highscreen Alpha Ice is no exception. Yes, it's not best display on the market, in comparison with the same HTC One or OPPO Find 5 it lacks contrast, and the color rendition itself is shifted towards warm tones, but this does not in any way affect its perception during actual use. Viewing angles are almost maximum, colors fade only slightly when the smartphone deviates extremely from its usual position. The maximum brightness is very high, but the minimum does not dazzle even in complete darkness. Needless to say, the HD resolution used here (1280 x 720 pixels) is enough for the eyes?

All the few control elements are located on the right side of the device, these are the power button and a paired volume key. The key travel is small and distinct, but without any obvious sound. A 3.5 mm miniJACK jack fits on top, and on the bottom is the main microphone (the second, necessary for noise reduction, is located on the rear panel at the top of the case) and a microUSB port, necessary for recharging the smartphone (or synchronizing it with a computer).

The back panel, as you might have guessed, is removable, underneath it there are as many as three slots where you can place a microSD memory card (up to 32 GB) and two SIM cards of different standards, this is both the “classic” miniSIM and the now standard microSIM, as needed Going to your operator’s salon with a request to replace the card is not here. They, SIM cards, can work simultaneously, although, as in previous models, only one “goes all out,” providing the user with 3G Internet (the second is limited to 2G speeds). The 2000 mAh battery can surprise you, providing an average of 16-18 hours of operation (about 3 hours of screen time). Sleep, by the way, is good; in “vegetable” mode with two actively working SIM cards, the device can lie down for four days, which is a good result. Although the battery is visible to the naked eye, it is non-removable, this is not obvious and, due to ignorance, you can start trying to get it out, which is fraught with consequences.

Next to the main speaker on the rear panel, on either side of it there are two plastic points that lift the smartphone above the surface on which it lies - thus the sound is not muffled; It would seem to be an elementary implementation, but for some reason not all manufacturers still resort to this (or similar) scheme.

Particular attention is paid to the photo camera, because it has a 13 MP sensor with dual LED flash and an infrared filter. Alas, despite the promises and possible expectations, its quality leaves much to be desired; the pictures can hardly be called good - although the level is, of course, higher in comparison with its predecessors. Focusing also works strangely in it, no matter how much I directed it (focus) to some part of the picture, in the photo it ended up in a completely different place, a little higher and to the right of the initially set target.

The redesigned camera application has several shooting modes, and in the settings it is possible to set image parameters, such as “contrast”, “brightness” and others. HDR images turn out controversial, everything becomes clearer and brighter, but this is still very far from the best representatives of the genre; the interesting and promising “beautiful shot” mode allows you to take disgusting, pixelated, low-resolution photos – why it is needed here remains a mystery. However, not everything is so bad in this camera; video shooting deserves respect and praise - the detail is normal, focusing is very fast, and the electronic image stabilizer works perfectly, concealing almost any “shaking” and without turning the picture into smeared jelly. Here Alpha Ice gets a well-deserved credit.

Moving to the operating room interface Android systems 4.2.1, I want to give Highscreen both a bow and a slap. A bow - for not making any radical changes to the “bare” Android, a slap in the face - for the “optimization” of the kernel, which is why the governor slowly increases the processor frequency, which is reflected in the brakes in the first 5-15 seconds of using the smartphone after unlocking it. Yes, yes, the interface does not work smoothly during this period of time, and why this was done is understandable, because an undemanding user will not care, but over time battery life, which doesn’t shine here anyway, will have a positive effect. However, we should hope that the programmers will come to their senses and fix this flaw in one of the future updates. The power of the local quad-core MediaTek MT6589 processor operating at a frequency of 1.2 GHz, coupled with the PowerVR SGX544MP video accelerator, is certainly enough for the smartphone to work decently.

To run “heavy” and sophisticated games, you should buy something more powerful, or limit yourself to simple “time killers”.
