Samsung Galaxy S6 - Specifications. Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge review

In the past, Samsung was rightfully criticized for marking time and craving for the use of glossy plastic in the bodies of top-end devices. However, the South Korean manufacturer, as a true leader in the Android direction, took his will into his fist and proved (to himself and those around him) that he can surprise. Experiments with leather-like plastic in the line Galaxy Note, as well as flirting with metal in the Galaxy Alpha model and the Galaxy A series, naturally led to truly premium materials in the pearls of the Galaxy catalog - the flagship Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge. But is the new product notable only for its body? Let's figure it out.

Video review and unboxing

A video review will be added in the coming days.

Design and equipment

The box lists the characteristics of the device, indicating the color and amount of built-in memory. The box along with the smartphone contains a microUSB cable, charging (2 A), a needle for opening the nano-SIM tray, a user manual, a warranty card and a headset (for a complete set it sounds good, but there is not enough bass - you need to press hard to hear them). Built-in 2550 mAh battery (S6 Edge has a capacity of 2600 mAh).

Previous Galaxy S models could only be called attractive in appearance with a stretch, and many chose them mainly for their good balance of characteristics. The peculiar, off-putting design began to bother even seasoned fans, and the Galaxy S6 became a real breath of fresh air. New model not only stands out among other Galaxy devices, but is also one of the most stylish smartphones at all. At the same time, the design of the regular S6 cannot be called very original - we have seen the combination of metal and glass many times. However, a huge step forward has been taken from previous Samsung plastic gadgets, and a spectacular one at that. The same HTC One M9, Sony Xperia Z4 (Z3+), although they are nice solutions that use high-quality materials, they are very far from One M8 and Xperia Z/Z1/Z2/Z3 and therefore do not evoke fresh emotions. The S6 and S6 Edge have several colors and I highly recommend checking them out in person, as the colors play in the light. For example, “black sapphire” gives off a blue tint in some conditions and generally looks much cooler in reality than in the pictures.

While the Galaxy S6 Edge, with its curved glass and crooked metal frame, feels unpleasant on the hand, and I would give it 3.5 out of 5 for ergonomics, then the shape of the Galaxy S6 deserves an “excellent” rating. The S6 measures 143.4 x 70.5 x 6.8 mm and is suitable for a 5.1” diagonal. Due to the rounded corners of the metal frame and glass rounded on both sides, with dimensions comparable to the Xperia Z3 (146 x 72 x 7.3 mm), the regular S6 model fits much better in the hand, does not put pressure on the palm when resting and feels much more compact. The Galaxy S6 is also very light, and at first glance this leads to confusion, since you expect more weight from a flagship in metal and glass. Unlike Note 4, the aluminum frame of the S6 does not cause discomfort during side swipes - it is located just below the glass level and is not sharp. Swiping your finger left and right is extremely pleasant.

So, plastic is a thing of the past. Fashion is now set by metal and glass - these are, of course, beautiful and pleasant to the touch materials, but they can hardly be called practical. Therefore, if you want to keep your beauty presentable, you will have to take care of protection in the form of film/glass and a cover/case immediately after purchase. Otherwise, don’t be surprised when, within minutes of use, you find micro-scratches where the backrest touches the surface (Corning Gorilla Glass 4 is strong glass, but it’s not sapphire, and scratching it is just as easy as previous generations). In addition, protection is simply necessary for users who tend to drop gadgets. Well, the protruding peephole also needs to be protected somehow. At the same time, if you treat your smartphone as a thing that just needs to do its job, then you don’t need accessories.

Above the display are light and distance sensors, a speaker, and a 5-megapixel camera. Under it were placed two touch keys and a hardware button with a finger scanner integrated into it. Now you don’t have to swipe your finger - fingerprints are quickly read by touch and this is very convenient (iPhone 6 Plus reads fingerprints slower and less accurately). Separate volume keys are located on the left side, and the right side has a power button. At the top there is an IR transmitter for controlling equipment and a microphone. At the bottom there is a second microphone, an audio jack, microUSB and a multimedia speaker with loud and clear sound. On the back, attention is drawn to the 16-megapixel camera peephole, next to which there is a flash, an infrared sensor and a heart rate sensor. All buttons have a clear movement, do not play and click pleasantly.

I'm not a fan of AMOLED screens with a PenTile structure. At the same time, I am satisfied with the SGS6 display in everything. It has excellent response speed and the highest viewing angles, it is bright, produces deep blacks, and four color modes should suit both those who like the rich color reproduction of Super AMOLED and those who need quieter colors. With all this, the screen is still not ideal. So the white color is dirty and this is especially noticeable when compared with high-quality IPS matrices. The nature of the “grayness” lies in the PenTile structure of subpixels - Diamond Pixel. It has green subpixels in the form of an oval and are in a row, and red and blue subpixels are larger in size and alternate. The screen refresh rate is also a weak point - you don’t notice the flickering with your eyes (but you can see it on the camera), but your eyes probably feel it and can get tired when reading for a long time. The numbers are good: the resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels with a diagonal of 5.1” provides a high pixel value of 577 ppi. Actually, thanks high resolution PenTile in the Galaxy S6 doesn’t bother me (let me explain: pixels consist of subpixels, and because of the “pentile” there are fewer of them than in IPS with RGB - that is, the resolution perceived by the eyes is lower than on paper - interface elements with HD and Full resolution HD appear spongy and have red halos).

Software: interface and settings

At the time of writing the review, the smartphone uses the Android 5.0.2 Lollipop platform and there is information that an update to Android 5.1.1 will be released soon. In general, device owners should not worry about up-to-date software - SGS6 will be supported for a long time.

The latest version of TouchWiz is simpler and prettier. The company removed little-used items in the menu and settings, replaced unintuitive icons with text, and got rid of unnecessary system warnings and notifications. All this benefited the branded shell - it became more nimble and agile, and it was almost impossible to encounter lag. I liked the convenient “close all” button on the active applications screen. I also appreciated the ability to select a grid of icons on the tables (4x4, 4x5, 5x5). The Flipboard news feed is available and can be disabled.

In addition, the long-awaited themes have finally been introduced into the corporate interface! There are already a sufficient number of them and among them there are quite high quality ones.

I don’t think that 5.1” can be considered the optimal diagonal for operating an interface with two windows, but there is such an opportunity and whether you use it or not is your decision. Programs can also be minimized into mini-windows and even draggable icons - and these are also not very convenient to interact with on the S6. Note 4 is doing better with this. There is nothing more to add about the interface - just look at the screenshots.

Settings are presented in a vertical list with “Quick Settings” at the top (up to 9 functions). In “Sounds and notifications” you can select the type of vibration from those offered, create your own and adjust the vibration intensity separately for calls, notifications and feedback. “Display” has a “font” item, where you can change the size (7 pieces) and select the font style by downloading additional ones from the store. A huge number of all kinds of gestures debuted in the Galaxy S4, and only a few made it to the Galaxy S6 - you can see them in the “Movements and Gestures” section. Programs associated with certain actions are specified in the “Standard Applications” section.

A lot of interesting things are contained in “Lock Screen and Security”. In particular, this is where fingerprints are entered (I repeat, unlocking the Galaxy is now very convenient). If you're in another country, you'll appreciate the ability to display dual clocks on your lock screen. You can also display the weather and information about the owner on the lockscreen.

Few people would like to lose their SGS6, but if this does happen, then use the “Find Phone” function (don’t forget to activate it first). From the site findmymobile.samsung.com you can determine the location of the device on the map, make a call to it with a message, activate maximum energy saving (to get additional time for searching), lock the screen (there will be a message from the owner with a contact number on it), lock activation (resetting parameters does not seem to help attackers), delete the contents. In addition, the service allows you to view your call log. In short, don’t neglect the Find My Phone feature. Will it come in handy?

Some users may benefit from a simple interface with large fonts and easier access to contacts and apps.

There is only one keyboard – branded from Samsung. Continuous input (swipe) is supported. There is a T9 dictionary and it is possible to change the keyboard height. I like the keyboard because it has a row of numbers.

The phone conveniently allows you to call a subscriber and send him a message. For the first action you need to swipe on the left, for the second - on the right.

If there are charge-consuming programs, they will be shown in the “Battery”. At this point you can turn on the charge percentage, view statistics and activate energy saving. There are the usual power savers that limit performance, reduce brightness, frame rate, and remove key backlighting and vibration. And there is extreme power saving, which changes the screen color to shades of gray, disables wireless functions (you can call and text) and limits the available applications.

Software: Applications

There are fewer programs preinstalled on the S6 than on previous flagships Samsung Galaxy. You can see everything that comes out of the box in the screenshots above. At the same time, most of the stock software can be disabled (such programs are marked with a “-” sign).

By the way, it’s not very cool that there is no sorting in the application menu. Want to get organized? Waste your time.

What is turned off does not manifest itself at all and does not hang in the memory. You can reactivate the application in the “Disabled” tab in the “Application Manager”. What was not included in the starting list, but may be of interest to users, according to Samsung, is included in the Essentials section of the Galaxy Apps store (and pleasant gifts in Galaxy Gifts). This is a compromise approach that suits the company and users. And don’t neglect turning it off, since unnecessary things may well uselessly fill up the RAM (as Hangouts, Play Music, g+ did for me).

In the “Gallery” you can change the number of previews in a row by plucking – I first saw this in Xperia a long time ago and really wanted other manufacturers to adopt it. And they adopted it - first LG, then Samsung. The photo editor provides automatic adjustment, orientation correction, cropping, effects, and tonal adjustment. If there is a face in the frame, then it becomes possible to apply effects - enlarge the eyes, lighten the skin, blur the background to make the face thinner. But don’t overdo it, otherwise your mother won’t find out :)

The proprietary video player has the ability to change the aspect ratio and run the video in a window.

The music player lost horizontal tabs (there was still no support for swipes and you could switch by tapping) and now you can select the display of content by touching the top left key. Not very convenient, since you have to use your second hand. The player does not know how to capture covers and lyrics from the Internet, and on this point the Korean player is noticeably inferior to the players of Meizu, HTC and Apple. Sound adjustment is carried out in the Sound Alive item. The user has access to controls for bass/treble, instrumental/vocal composition, a seven-band equalizer with presets and four effects (3D, bass, clarity, concert hall), tube amplifier emulation and surround sound effect. But what interested me most was the ability to optimize the sound according to your hearing. You simply take the test with headphones on, noting what you hear. sound signals, and then the player amplifies the tones that you cannot hear - this really works, the sound becomes richer. Unfortunately, the optimized sound is not compatible with third-party players, although PowerAmp was able to combine with surround sound and the effect of a tube amplifier (it goes well with some tracks). The sound in the Galaxy S6 is provided by a dedicated Wolfson WM1840 audio chip. The company generally likes to use Wolfson’s developments in conjunction with Exynos, but all previous works, to be honest, were not impressive and were inferior to competitors with the same DACs. The Note 4 with WM5110E was especially disappointing. However, with the Galaxy S6, the company's engineers were able to well reveal the potential of the WM1840. Smartphone with Denon D600 and Creative Aurvana Platinum headphones gives loud noise with a reserve, it plays cleanly and assertively - you can hear details in it that were inexpressive on the Note 4 and were simply lost. However, if you compare S6 with Meizu MX4 Pro and Apple iPhone 6 Plus, the advantage is not on the side of the Galaxy model.

The weather forecast is integrated into the calendar with the S Planner task planner.

With the help of S Health, the user’s health status is measured, activity programs and sleep status are monitored. The sensor on the camera allows you to determine your pulse, measure the concentration of oxygen in the blood, and also assess your stress state. If you use accessories from Samsung partners, you can enter blood sugar and blood pressure readings into the S6. The phone also receives data from Galaxy watches, scales and bracelets.

S Voice – voice assistant. Understands Russian and can carry out various commands. To start, you need to say the command that you spoke during setup (any combination of words). And I still think that all these “esvoices” and “siri” are self-indulgence.

Smart Manager - quick access to battery and energy saving modes, internal memory and cleaning unnecessary data, random access memory and task manager, security with Knox protection and antivirus. The application comes with a convenient widget.

And the last thing I would like to note from the preinstalled one is “Dictaphone”. This feature is present in every smartphone, but only Samsung Galaxy devices offer multiple modes. There is a standard mode, there is an interview mode (microphones become sensitive to sounds coming from the top and bottom ends), and there is a voice note mode that turns speech into text (you can then correct the text while listening to this note).

I will not describe other programs, I will limit myself to screenshots:

Camera

Cameras have never been the weak point of top-end cameras Samsung devices. The Galaxy S6 (paired with the S6 Edge) was no exception. Initially, there was information that the manufacturer chose the Japanese Sony IMX240 sensor for the main 16-megapixel camera, but later information appeared about the use of ISOCELL’s own sensor in some phones (to check, you need to enter the code *#34971539# and press ISP VER CHECK, it will say Rear Camera SLSI_S5K2P2 for ISOCELL or SONY_IMX240 for IMX240, respectively). Modules with different sensors are identical in characteristics, and pictures from them differ slightly in color rendition, but the difference is not so critical that you need to rush around the shops and look for a sample with the desired matrix. We offer you to verify this in our own comparison of two Galaxy S6s with Samsung and Sony sensors.

The camera offers optical stabilization, a fast f/1.9 aperture, fast autofocus and an infrared sensor for correct selection white balance. Contrary to assumptions, the camera is not covered with sapphire glass, but with regular glass. It doesn’t even seem like Gorilla Glass 4. It often happens that an interesting shot is ruined due to slow or awkward camera startup. This will not happen with the Galaxy S6 due to the quick turn on of the camera by double pressing the home key. Poke twice and in less than a second (0.7 seconds to be exact) the camera is ready to go!

The camera interface has been thoroughly redesigned. On the left are filters (7 pieces + you can download additional ones), HDR mode (auto, on, off), timer (2, 5, 10 sec), flash (auto, on, off), settings. Right: go to the gallery (swipe from right to left does the same), video, photo, switch to the front camera, select a shooting mode (swipe from left to right). Depending on the shooting conditions, different icons may appear at the top. If you want to lock focus and exposure on a specific subject, then simply hold your finger on it for a second. In the settings, you select the resolution for photos (at 16:9 the maximum resolution is 16 MP, and at 4:3 – 12 MP) and video (VGA, HD, Full HD at 30 fps, Full HD at 60 fps, QHD and UHD). There are several shooting modes out of the box, but that’s not all – additional ones are waiting for you in the store. WITH automatic mode(“Auto”) parameters are selected in the best way, according to the automation version. With the “Pro” mode, the exposure metering mode is selected, the exposure is adjusted (within +-2 in 0.1EV steps), the ISO is set (auto, 100, 200, 400, 800), the white balance is indicated and the focus is adjusted. In addition, you can apply one of the color profiles and even create your own (there are two slots with controls for color temperature, hue, contrast, saturation, highlight and shadows). In general, there are many options for professional photographers. Of course, it would be possible to set them each time from memory (for night photography, for macro photography, for children, for example), but the company has provided three cells for storing all parameters - this is convenient. With Selective Focus you can change the focus after the photo shoot. You can focus on an object close up, in the background, or leave everything in focus. If the composition is not very suitable for this mode, the phone will warn you if it is difficult to identify objects. “Virtual shooting” is useful when shooting objects from different angles. You can scroll through the footage with your finger or tilt.

vertical panorama

horizontally shot panorama

I was pleased with the panoramic photography. Canvases can be removed horizontally and vertically, but you will get the greatest coverage in the second case. The resolution will leave few people indifferent - the vertical panorama is 60 megapixels, the horizontal one is “only” 28 megapixels. The weight of the finished images is also impressive - almost 23 MB for a vertical panorama and about 13 MB for a horizontal one.

The bulk of the footage presented to you was obtained in auto mode. The first set of photographs were taken in simple conditions - in daylight. Even on a sunny day, some top smartphones surprise with strong noise in the blue sky. The Galaxy S6, however, is not one of them. The footage comes out high-quality at long distances and does not disappoint when shooting macro. I especially like the bokeh - it looks natural. Autofocusing is fast, frames are also taken quickly - there is a minimum of blurry photos.

without and with HDR:

without and with HDR

Real-time HDR mode doesn't require manual activation and deactivation every time you find the right conditions. All you have to do is select HDR Auto and trust the algorithms (that’s what I did - almost all the photos presented were taken with “auto”, although this does not mean that HDR worked everywhere). To evaluate HDR, I shot several samples with the mode (on) and without (off). It seems to me that the mode is effective and it makes sense to keep it on “auto” (it certainly won’t be worse). Look:

The high-aperture optics allow you to keep ISO low indoors, where Galaxy camera The S6 does not lose its positive qualities and continues to confidently provide stable results with clear images. White balance is determined correctly in artificial light, and there are no problems with colors either.

photo in auto mode and a photo with manually set ISO 400

In difficult conditions with a lack of light, you begin to appreciate the Pro mode with manual settings. You can, of course, trust the auto mode, but with a little intervention you will get much more interesting results. The left photos were taken on “auto”, and the right photos were taken with ISO 100 and 200 (shutter speed is adjusted automatically):

without and with flash

regular selfie and selfie with maximum level retouching

Self-portraits with a 5-megapixel camera with wide-angle optics and an f/1.9 aperture can be taken as is, or with the effect of a beautiful face. If the capture angle does not suit you (and it is wide - 120 degrees), then use the group selfie function (tilt the device to the sides). To take a photo, turn your palm toward the camera, press the shutter button, touch the sensor on the back, or say the magic word (“take a photo,” “shoot,” “smile,” or “shoot”). Video on the front camera can be recorded in high resolution UHD.

The maximum video resolution is 4K (Ultra HD or UHD). Unfortunately, image stabilization (OIS) does not work with it, although the video sequence is not particularly jerky. But you need to understand that 4K is a mode for experienced users and you should shoot all sorts of beautiful things with a tripod. Full-time autofocus is fast and accurate (faster than the Xperia Z3, but not as good as the iPhone 6 Plus). While shooting a video, you can track an object - focus on it and then the automation will take over everything. You can also select the focus point with exposure - also for advanced users. I think the most popular mode will be Full HD with 60 fps. When you select it, you see a warning about stabilization not working - and this is strange, since stabilization works. The fps value (60 or 30) is stable during the day, at night and indoors. Slow motion video is captured at 720p resolution. The phone subsequently selects a slowdown zone and cuts out the audio if necessary.

The video camera pleases with fast focusing, correct color reproduction and a good optical stabilizer. Maybe there is a catch in the sound recording? I'll upset the haters - no. And I’ll say more - regarding the capture Sound Galaxy S6 is ahead of its opponents. Stereo audio with a bitrate of 256 kbps does not give preference to voice or ambient noise - the entire sound stream is captured as fully as possible. Microphones correctly capture the timbre of voices, record birdsong, and pass creaking floorboards and road noise through a noise reduction filter. Everything you hear during shooting ends up on film.

By the way, Samsung is not going to sit back and abandon the camera. It is expected that along with Android 5.1.1, the S6 and S6 Edge models will learn to shoot in RAW and the Pro mode will receive manual shutter speed control - just like the HTC One M9 and LG G4. In general, if you add up all the photo and video capabilities and evaluate the shooting results, then the SGS6 can well be considered a smartphone with some of the best cameras in the industry. In particular, I will highlight the main 16-megapixel camera, which produces high-quality frames in the “Auto” mode and is able to reward the user when shooting manually in the “Pro” mode. Good job, Samsung!

Benchmarks and Performance

For the Galaxy S6, the company abandoned Qualcomm chipsets, deciding to give preference to its own development – Exynos 7420. This is probably the right decision, since at the time of the smartphone’s release the reviews around the Snapdragon 810 were extremely negative. Judging by Xiaomi's statement, its engineers only recently managed to overcome overheating and severe throttling in close cooperation with Qualcomm engineers (they finished Mi Note Pro). Samsung Exynos 7420 is made using the latest 14nm process technology, supports 64-bit computing and includes 8 cores. Four fast Cortex-A57 cores operate at frequencies up to 2.1 GHz, four slow Cortex-A53 cores support frequencies up to 1.5 GHz. The Korean SoC is complemented by a Mali-T760MP8 graphics accelerator with a frequency of 772 MHz and 3 GB of fast LPDDR4 RAM. This filling is fast and the optimization of the launcher did not disappoint this time, so the phone pleases with its speed on desktops, in simple programs and heavy gaming applications.

Normal mode and power saving mode

And here are the “parrots” (the maximum indicators are presented after several runs of benchmarks (from 3 to 5): GFXBench – 6/14/33 fps and 13/22/49 fps for QHD and Full HD, AnTuTu 5.7 – 68,157, 3DMark Unlimited – 22,414, Epic Citadel Ultra – 53.6 fps, Geekbench 3 – 1492/5225, Basemark OS 2 – 1786. In power saving mode with processor performance limitation, the figures are lower, but still quite high: AnTuTu 5.7 – 52,665, 3DMark Unlimited – 15,852, Epic Citadel Ultra – 38.5 fps, Geekbench 3 – 1046/4242, Basemark OS 2 – 1192 (see the screenshot for GFXBench frames – after a recent update the program stopped counting fps).

Many users are outraged by the lack of a microSD slot in the flagship. There is an explanation for this and it is very simple. The fact is that the S6 received fast UFS 2.0 flash memory and removable cards would not work well with it. And so that users do not complain about slow work and all sorts of errors, the company decided to simply abandon microSD, the quality of which is not guaranteed, assuming that users will have a sufficient amount of built-in memory (from 32 to 128 GB). And the inconvenience of transferring files without a PC is leveled out with support wireless interfaces And external drives via USB OTG – connect the flash drive via an adapter and off you go. Android platform 5.0.2 is an early build of Lollipop and it itself has some problems with RAM allocation. The consequence of this was aggressive multitasking - applications are unloaded from memory as actively as if the S6 had not 3 GB of RAM, but 2 or even 1 (I’m exaggerating this, of course). According to the latest information, a small update has already been released for the S6 in some regions to fix a memory leak. The final point in this will be the firmware with Android 5.1.1 - the release will take place in the near future. In the meantime, users are seeing a free amount of RAM of 400-900 MB.

discharge in video and in game

discharge in everyday life

discharge in everyday life

The capacity of the S6's non-removable battery is 2550 mAh. The value is not very large, but sufficient - I got 4-5.5 hours of screen time during the day, which is comparable to the iPhone 6 Plus and Sony Xperia Z3. The operating time in video player mode with maximum brightness exceeded 10 hours, and the discharge GTA game San Andreas with comfortable brightness was 11% in half an hour (or about 4.5 hours of play). All these are decent indicators for a flagship, especially with such a battery capacity. They were made possible thanks to the AMOLED screen and the 14nm chipset process technology. If your phone runs out of juice in the middle of the day with heavy use, you'll appreciate the fast charging (1.5 times faster than the Galaxy S5). My measurements with a standard unit showed the following: a 10-minute recharge increases the charge from 1% to 19%, a 30-minute recharge increases the charge to 51%, and an hourly recharge increases the charge to 89%. Charging from 1% to 100% takes only 1 hour 23 minutes - that's very fast. But that's not all that Samsung has done for the user - the Galaxy S6 also supports wireless charging.

Typically, metal and glass smartphones tend to get very hot. And if it were not the Exynos 7420, but the Snapdragon 810, then rest assured, you could fry eggs on the S6. In reality, the smartphone heats up tolerably and cools down quickly. Even a 5-minute recording of 4K video and demanding 3D games (half an hour in GTA San Andreas results in only 35 degrees of battery life) does not cause severe discomfort - the desire to urgently throw the phone or put it in a case does not appear (but the smartphone case is still recommended).

conclusions

Last year's Galaxy S5 left mixed feelings and it was personally difficult for me to definitely recommend it for purchase against the backdrop of the successful LG G3, HTC One M8 and Sony Xperia Z2. But the Galaxy S6, without exaggeration, was a huge step forward for Samsung and for the Android direction from A-brands in general (stop treading water!). HTC One M9 is out, and the release of the new G4 and Xperia Z3+ (Z4) in Russia is just planned, but I have no compelling reason to convince you to refrain from buying the SGS6 right now. It looks great, has quality materials, offers fast hardware, is free of many of TouchWiz's past shortcomings, and has great cameras. The only thing I would like from the Galaxy S6 is a larger diagonal. But for such requirements there is the Galaxy Note series.

We have already written about the expected exhibition Mobile World Congress 2015, which will show new flagships from Samsung and finally it happened. After several months of wondering what these new devices will look like, the flagships are officially shown to the public. Maybe Samsung Galaxy S6 will be a bestseller this year, and Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge claims to have the most non-standard design among Android smartphones.

Samsung Galaxy S6- This is the next model (after the S5), which received higher quality body materials, a slightly updated design and finally a metal frame. Now Samsung flagships can be compared with latest iPhone in terms of quality and design.

S6 got Super AMOLED screen 5.1-inch diagonal (same as S5). Samsung believes that there is no point in making the screen larger on the new flagship, because there is still a series Note smartphones with a large diagonal screen. The resolution has been increased to qHD 2560x1440, like other recent top-end smartphones, such as the Note 4. The metal body is 50% stronger than other smartphones with a metal body, the manufacturers claim. On the front panel there is a mechanical “Home” button and touch “ Latest apps" and "Back".

It can be said that Samsung Galaxy S6 looks like an iPhone, but it's not. Although the frame also became metal with rounded corners, and the speaker was moved to the bottom of the smartphone, otherwise the front part is more similar to the previous S5 model, and rear end received the new kind. The thickness of the device is only 6.8 mm and a possible solution with rounded corners of the metal frame will make it more convenient to use.

You won’t be able to get the battery out of the S6 (without disassembling the device); while previously you could open the cover and change the battery, now it is non-removable. The capacity is 2550 mAh, which is pretty standard for smartphones of this size.

Now is the opportunity wireless charging this is not a separate option. The manufacturer promises 4 hours of device operation in just 10 minutes of recharging with an original wireless charger. But you can say goodbye to expanding the memory capacity thanks to microSD cards; there is no slot for flash drives. But the S6 will be available in versions with 64GB and even 128GB, and the very first version will have 32GB of internal memory.

Previously, there were rumors that Samsung was abandoning Qualcomm chips and would produce new flagships only on its processors Exynos. IN Galaxy S6 used 64 bit Exynos octa-core processor and 3 GB RAM new standard DDR4. Company representatives did not specify what processor is used, but the 14nm architecture suggests that it should be Exynos 7. Samsung claims the chip is more efficient, 35% more efficient and 20% faster than the Exynos in the Note 4.

The rear camera has a resolution of 16MP with optical stabilization. The camera lens has an aperture value of F/1.9, which means higher quality pictures in low light. The camera module protrudes noticeably from the back cover. But a tracking autofocus function appeared, similar to SLR cameras. The front camera is 5MP with a wide-angle lens, which is more of a standard these days. There is also a heart rate sensor on the back cover, and the central button on the front can scan fingerprints (as in the S5).

The new flagships will, of course, run on a mobile operating system Android 5.0. New shell version TouchWiz will become easier than previous versions. Samsung makes a big bet on payment system Samsung Pay, which will compete with Google Wallet and Apple Pay, as well as a partnership with Microsoft to receive a bonus place in cloud storage OneDrive. By using Samsung Pay And NFC chip, you will be able to make purchases in any place where plastic cards are serviced. There is already support for Mastercard and Visa of several large banks. Samsung Pay should launch in the summer in the USA and South Korea.

Now let's talk about Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge, which should diversify flagship devices with its unusual alternative design. Screen S6 Edge is now rounded on both sides, on which widgets and program launcher icons can be located, as well as useful information can be displayed. "Your friends will think it's really cool," says a Samsung spokesperson. But it’s quite difficult to say how many people will be willing to pay for such a “wow” effect.

Screen Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge like the S6 - Super AMOLED 2560x1440 (qHD) 5.1 inches. CPU Exynos And 3GB DDR4 RAM. Built-in memory 32GB, 64GB or 128GB. The camera is the same as in the S6, 16MP main and 5MP front. But the battery is slightly different - 2600mAh.

Already on April 10, both smartphones will be available in 20 countries (it is unknown whether Russia is on this list). Prices are not yet known. Several body colors were shown (white, blue, gold and other colors).

Why choose a Samsung Galaxy S6 32Gb smartphone

For a bright screen

The smartphone display diagonal is 5.1 inches. This size is convenient for viewing photos and videos, surfing the web and reading e-books. Thanks to Super AMOLED technology and a high resolution of 2560x1440 pixels, the screen surprises with clarity and contrast, accurate display of the smallest details, and impresses with rich and colorful color reproduction.

For effective work

Thanks to a powerful eight-core processor with a frequency of 2100 MHz and 3 GB of RAM, the smartphone confidently functions in multitasking mode, quickly responds to commands and loads applications, and does not freeze in resource-intensive games. Built-in memory of 32 GB allows you to store a large number of photos, videos, music and other content. If necessary, its volume can be increased to 64 GB using a microSD card.

For the smart camera

The main camera with a resolution of 16 megapixels takes bright and clear pictures in any conditions. It is equipped with a powerful flash and a fast autofocus system, which prevents blurry frames thanks to the optical stabilization function.

For a reliable battery

The capacity of the battery installed in the smartphone is 2550 mAh. It is designed for 17 hours of active calls and can be up to 168 hours in standby mode. The smartphone supports fast charging technology and can be charged both traditionally and wirelessly.

For the necessary functions

Samsung Galaxy S6 is equipped with a radio and MP3 player. The built-in fingerprint scanner is responsible for quick unlocking and reliable data protection. NFC technology allows you to pay for purchases contactlessly without taking your wallet or bank card out of your bag.

The South Korean smartphone manufacturer will undoubtedly continue to release flagship models of the Galaxy S line in 2015. The Galaxy S6 has been featured in various rumors for months now, and we already know something about its hardware specifications and the timing of its announcement. In any case, the S6 model is already in the works and in the coming months there will be a lot of information from various sources.

The Samsung Galaxy S5 has been on the market for about six months now, so the media, analysts and fans are already turning their attention towards the Galaxy S6. Based on previous presentations and leaks that have surfaced online in various articles, we hope to get an idea of what we can expect from the unannounced flagship.

Over the course of a couple of years, we have already gotten used to the fact that Samsung introduces its Galaxy S smartphones in February or March. We also expect the Galaxy S6 to be unveiled in the first quarter of 2015 - probably either in February at MWC 2015, or maybe at CES 2015 in January (but there's very little chance of that). In any case, sales could begin in March next year.

In recent news, we said that Samsung is working on Galaxy flagship S6 literally from scratch. The smartphone is being developed as part of Project Zero, which is not surprising, since sales of smartphones have dropped significantly compared to its predecessors, and the company clearly does not intend to lose fans.

At the beginning of this year, there were already rumors that the Galaxy S5 will receive a display with Quad HD resolution. Samsung considered that a Full HD screen would be sufficient for a flagship, and therefore in 2015 we should definitely expect an increase in the screen resolution of the S6 to QHD (2560 x 1440 pixels). This is because already in the second half of this year an unspoken standard for flagship smartphones was established. Again we will see a Super AMOLED screen, but its diagonal should grow to at least 5.2 inches, but no more, so as not to threaten sales of the Galaxy Note 4. By the way, Samsung is quite capable of fitting a little larger display V Galaxy sizes S5 due to narrower frames.

We all know that Google recently introduced new version its operating system is Android 5.0 Lollipop with built-in support for 64-bit processors. There are already rumors that the Galaxy S6 will run on a self-produced processor – Exynos 7420, and the second flagship model will already have Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processors (depending on the sales market). Yes, let's clarify about the processors - the Exynos 7420 will have LTE support thanks to the built-in Exynos Modem 333 modem, but the Snapdragon 810 will already be eight-core with four Cortex-A57 and four Cortex-A53 cores, with an Adreno 430 graphics accelerator and support for 64-bit calculations.

As for the design, this should be the first flagship of the Galaxy S line with a metal body. Enough steps have already been taken to release affordable smartphones premium class. Firstly, this is the Galaxy Alpha with its metal frame, which we also saw on the Galaxy Note 4 phablet. Secondly, a separate premium line has appeared Galaxy smartphones A with metal housings. It's a pity, but this means one thing - we lose access to a replaceable battery.

The Galaxy S6 will “get fatter” due to an increase in memory - the RAM will already be 3GB, and the built-in volume will increase to 128GB. The initial model will have 16GB of internal memory, but is only available in the Asian market, while the international market will have 3 variants: 32, 64 and 128GB. But what about support? MicroSD cards? I hope Samsung doesn't give up on this.

Samsung is also already installing for itself new standard For front cameras– it makes sense to wait for a 5-megapixel selfie camera, given that this is already a popular trend. As for the main camera, Samsung may limit itself to a 16-megapixel camera, as in the Galaxy Note 4, with optical image stabilization, smart autofocus, support for Ultra HD video recording, as well as the possibility of accelerated recording (slow motion). It looks like low-light shooting will also be improved.

Apple set a new rule in the smartphone market by introducing its iPhone with a fingerprint scanner. Samsung supported the initiative, so the S6 will also have this sensor, and there will also be a heart rate monitor and an ultraviolet sensor, which gives a significant advantage. Perhaps a retinal scanner will also appear, but the chances are slim.
