Seven-inch tablet phone Acer Iconia Talk S. Seven-inch tablet phone Acer Iconia Talk S Technical specifications Acer Iconia Talk S

Not a bad price/quality ratio. Two SIM cards. Good display color reproduction. Fast charging from the original adapter.

Minuses

The body is loose and creaks. The screen coating gets scratched once or twice. The display sometimes flickers when using the keyboard. Have to reboot. The screen may turn off during playback voice messages in WhatsApp/Telegram due to an inadequate light sensor, because... the tablet thinks you put it to your ear.

Review

In general, I did not expect anything special from a budget tablet; it is quite convenient in everyday life and for the purposes that I bought: browsing the Internet and messengers. The feeling of lack of RAM is almost not felt. Overall it works smoothly and with virtually no lag. Another problem is touch screen. Perhaps the most unbearable thing about this model. Among other things, the device cannot contact the official update server, producing error 0014. There are no tips anywhere on how to fix it. What is typical is that there is no firmware for this model on the official website, which means that it seems that the manufacturer is not going to support this model for a long time.

What I didn't like

Quality

What I liked

Good layout, fairly fast hardware, good 4G reception, battery holds a charge

What I didn't like

buggy (maybe it was defective, thanks to the m-video with a creak, but they accepted it back..)
Glitches:
1 - uncritical - the volume button in the vertical position increases up, in the horizontal position down... go figure in which direction to adjust it...
2) in Yandex and other applications it is rare, but unbearable - either the keyboard did not appear in the search line, then the back button vibrated, but categorically did not rewind back, I had to turn off the phone and turn it on with the button, after that everything worked
3) in the Yandex navigator, for some reason, only in the car the map did not move closer and was not removed either with fingers or + - it did not work, scrolling down - up, again only in the car ..
3) in the game (boom deech) the screen did not want to move in certain places, the glitch appeared and then went away..
When I bought two speakers, I thought they were playing together, good stereo sound, but only the bottom speaker plays, although the sound is good. But with 2 speakers it would be much more pleasant, because they exist, why didn’t they put sound on both?

What I liked

everything is there, 4g, 2 sim cards, good brightness, sound, etc. small size - practically big smartphone, only there is no flash.

What I didn't like

The rear camera is only 5 megapixels and there is no flash. RAM is 1 GB, but if you are not a gamer, then this is quite enough. Yes, he doesn’t look like a gamer, he looks too strict.

What I liked

Here, almost everything you need today is collected in “one bottle.” Try to find a tablet with minimum sizes case at 7 inches, for two SIM cards, and any one can work with LTE, with the function voice communication, space for a memory card, decent screen, very good battery, 410 processor, two cameras, very good design, masculine, nothing superfluous, well, it’s still ACER...

What I didn't like

1. When playing video or audio, only one speaker works (the second is only for conversations).
2. There is no proximity sensor - during a conversation the screen does not go dark and everything that is not allowed is pressed with the ears and cheeks.
3. Assume that there are no cameras (as on the Sony-Ericsson K750i).
4. Tricky switching of LTE on SIM cards (in two places).
5. There is no recording of the conversation.
6. There is no flash, and therefore no flashlight (I can’t live without a flashlight)
7. I didn’t feel LTE on the 2nd SIM card.

What I liked

1. Smooth bright large screen. 2. Some kind of unreal Wi-Fi. When it downloads, I get up (100 megabytes in 10 seconds), although all other computers, smartphones, tablets, laptops and TVs from the same Wi-Fi box barely download (20 megabytes in 2-3 minutes).

What I didn't like

1. There are no stereo speakers. What are called "right" and "left" are the conversation speaker and the external audio speaker.
2. Low sensitivity of the WWAN radio path.
3. Disable the BT driver and restart all applications.
4. Video lags. Judging by the symptoms, a pause followed by fast playback indicates software problems (dma?) - data in memory, access to them is not possible (commercial mx, tried all available codecs, external-internal memory).
5. The choice of SIM cards is divided into two menus. Those. To switch from one SIM to another, you need
First select a communication standard in one place, enable data transfer, and in another place switch data transfer (some kind) to another SIM.
6. Contrary to numerous information on the net, the operating mode of SIM cards is as follows: on one LTE/WCDMA/GSM, on the other only GSM (old GMSK).
7. 5Ghz WiFi does not see.
8. The back cover is metal(?), shields the signal. In one position cellular signal will be accepted, in another - not.
9. After a series of experiments, it was possible to find out that problems with WWAN arise due to the simultaneous operation of two SIM cards. Moreover, disabling data transfer for one of the cards does not change the situation. Simultaneous operation causes problems. Cards - Yota and Mega.
10. The device charges for more than 3 hours from a 2.1A power supply.

In 2015, I expected the appearance of ultra-compact seven-inch tablets, more reminiscent of slightly larger phablets. The first sign was Huawei MediaPad X1, announced last year, and gradually successors and competitors are beginning to appear.

Appearance, materials, control elements, assembly

From a design point of view, we have a regular seven-inch tablet with rounded corners. The only interesting feature that can be highlighted is the color of the back cover; in my sample it was soft blue with a silver tint.

Most of the front side of the tablet is occupied by a seven-inch screen, above it there are light and proximity sensors, as well as a front camera eye and a light indicator.

The manufacturer also installed two stereo speakers in the device, also located on the front side. At least that's what I thought at first. As it turns out, the top one is conversational, and the bottom one is external. And I almost praised Acer for its excellent implementation. The only bottom speaker has a good volume reserve, but keep in mind that it is only enough for a small quiet room.

On the left side you can see a tray for two microSIM SIM cards, as well as a volume rocker and a power button. I will never tire of praising the buttons on Acer tablets: convenient location (right under the thumb), soft pressing, good movement.

A 3.5 mm headphone and microUSB jack was installed on top, and a microphone was installed on the bottom.

There is also a slot for a memory card, it is on the right.

The back cover is made of matte, slightly rough plastic, pleasant to the touch. Thanks to it, the tablet is comfortable to hold in your hand and does not slip.

In general, there are no complaints about the assembly, but sometimes when you take the tablet with your left hand, you can hear a quiet crunch of plastic. However, it is not permanent, that is, it is not. I don't think this is a widespread problem, just pay attention to it if you check the device.

Dimensions

Acer is gradually getting rid of the brand's reputation for thick and heavy tablets, and the dimensions of the Iconia Talk S are a great example of this. This tablet is comfortable to hold even with one hand; thanks to the small frames around the screen, it was possible to significantly reduce its width; pay attention to this parameter among competitors.

The weight and thickness of the tablet are also very good; it is quite thin and light (although it is inferior in these parameters to the same MediaPad X1, but the latter is more expensive).

Screen

Let's move on to the most ambiguous parameter of this model. Let me remind you that Talk S costs 15,000 rubles, and the display only has HD resolution. In my opinion, this is a significant drawback. Personally, I can see the difference between HD and FHD with the naked eye. It manifests itself primarily in the graininess of small fonts. On the other hand, when watching video, FHD at this diagonal does not have any special advantages.

The display has good viewing angles, a good range of maximum/minimum brightness and mediocre behavior in the sun.

The screen in this tablet is inferior to competitors, primarily in resolution, and this is one of the main disadvantages of the device.

Among the interesting features, I would like to note the ability to quickly unlock the screen using a double tap. In addition, you can assign the launch of any applications to this press. A simple and convenient function (but the translation into Russian will not be finalized).

operating system

The tablet works under Android control 4.4.4 with minor changes from Acer. The manufacturer promises an update for this model to Android 5.0 (information on timing at this moment No).

Among the additions, I will highlight the appearance of shortcuts on the lock screen (although they are not customizable, which is a minus).

A slight change to the curtain with switches.

And floating widgets. This is a small window with a calendar, calculator, maps or notes.

Otherwise, we have before us “pure” Android 4.4 KitKat with all its pros and cons.

By the way, when you buy this tablet you are given 10 GB in Dropbox, but for only 3 months.

Performance

In terms of the chipset, we have a typical average chipset from Qualcomm, or rather, an updated version of it. Its performance is enough for everyday tasks (web surfing, mail, working with the launcher) and most undemanding games. But the same Asphalt 8 runs only on medium settings.

Autonomous operation

Despite the more than modest battery capacity, when testing battery life Talk S showed excellent results. Here, however, it is important to take into account that in everyday use will also be active Mobile Internet, so expect 2-3 days of use on a single charge.

Wireless interfaces

One of the advantages of using Qualcomm chipsets is the ideal operation of the GPS module; satellites are located very quickly compared to the same MediaTek.

By the way, this is one of the few tablets that not only supports dual SIM cards, but also works with our LTE networks. Of course, you can also make calls using Talk S.

Conclusion

There are no complaints about the quality of speech transmission; you and your interlocutor can hear each other perfectly.

In retail this tablet sold for 15,000 rubles. For this money you get a very compact seven-inch tablet with support for two SIM cards, LTE, voice calls, IPS matrix and HD resolution, as well as excellent battery life.

The key competitor to this model is Asus MeMO Pad 7 ME572CL, a seven-inch tablet from Asus. Its main difference is FHD resolution, and this is a very significant plus. Thanks to this, the picture and text look much better on MeMO Pad 7. Let’s add to this the fact that the ME572CL retails for 14,000 rubles.

What are the advantages on the side of Iconia Talk S? These include the presence of two SIM cards with LTE support (the MeMO Pad 7 also has LTE, but there is only one SIM card, and you cannot make calls using it), as well as more compact dimensions and lighter weight. It’s too early to consider the planned update to Android 5.0 an advantage, because MeMO Pad 7 is also planned to be updated, but the timing for neither one nor the other tablet is unknown.

To justify Talk S, I will say that, apparently, this tablet is being sold taking into account the new exchange rate, while Asus is selling its ME572CL at the old rate (otherwise how to explain that in MVideo and Yulmart it costs 14,000 rubles, and in Citylink - 20,000 rubles ?). However, for the end consumer none of this matters. While there is MeMO Pad 7 ME572CL for 14,000 rubles, the only reason Taking Acer Iconia Talk S for 15,000 rubles only supports voice calls and the presence of two SIM cards, but are these sufficient advantages over FHD resolution? Personally, I don't think so.

According to statistics, users are increasingly willing to purchase smartphones with big screen. The displays of some models already reach 6 inches. They are convenient for watching movies, and any content on the Internet. Acer went even further and equipped the 7-inch Acer Iconia Talk 7 tablet with voice communication functions. We found out how comfortable it is to place the tablet to the ear during a user test.

Large smartphones are replacing small tablets - this is the market trend mobile devices. However, some manufacturers, including Acer, are not ready to put up with the current state of affairs and are releasing tablet computers, which, if desired, can be used as a telephone by placing the device to your ear or using a headset - whichever you prefer. A striking example of this is the Acer Iconia Talk 7.

Characteristics of the new product with the exception of voice support mobile communications do not distinguish the Acer Iconia Talk 7 from its competitors. This is a typical budget employee. Among the interesting features worth noting is that high-quality assembly, original design of the rear panel of the case and very decent battery life. But first things first.

Design, construction

id="sub2">

The appearance of Acer Iconia Talk 7 is typical for most inexpensive devices. The tablet body is made of plastic. The front side is glossy, and the back is matte with an ornament in the form of small dots. It looks quite interesting and attractive. The manufacturer claims that specialists from Italy worked on the design of the tablet, as indicated by a sticker at the bottom of the case.

Fingerprints and dust instantly appear on the glossy surface of the screen. And here rear end practical. There are no fingerprints, no abrasions, no scratches visible on it.

The case itself is monolithic (except for the cover for two SIM cards and the memory card on the right side), all parts fit tightly. For a budget-level plastic device, the assembly is very solid.

Almost the entire front part of the tablet occupies touchscreen with a diagonal of 7 inches. There is a fairly wide frame on the top and bottom of the tablet. It is a little narrower in length. Above the screen there is a 2 MP front camera for selfies and video calls. There is also a speaker for playing voice calls. Despite the fact that this is a tablet, it can make calls like a classic smartphone. A little lower and to the left are the accelerometer and light sensor.

At the top of the right side there is a button to turn on, turn off and lock the screen, as well as keys for adjusting the volume. Hidden under the plastic cover next to it is a slot for microSD cards and slots for two SIM cards (both for mini-SIM cards).

The main connectors can be seen on the top end. There's a 3.5mm headphone port and a microUSB port. A microphone for phone calls is located on the bottom edge.

On the back side there is the main camera. It has a resolution of 5 megapixels. There is no flash.

At the bottom of the tablet there is a speaker for audio playback. The volume reserve is decent. The sound is quite loud. But at volumes above average, the sound begins to wheeze and a background hiss appears.

The tablet is assembled at a factory in China.

Screen. Graphics capabilities

id="sub3">

The tablet has a 7-inch TFT screen with a resolution of 600x1024, which is low by modern standards. If you look closely, individual pixels are visible in the texts and pictures. The display is inferior to the matrices of tablets in a higher price category, but is generally adequate for its class. Colors do not look artificial, brightness and contrast are at an acceptable level. Even the viewing angles are a little wider than you would expect from an inexpensive device.

The tablet has an application for adjusting the MiraVision picture. This is a fairly common utility that allows you to adjust sharpness, color temperature, dynamic contrast and image saturation. In general, the picture quality does not change radically, but it’s really worth playing with the settings if the tablet is used to view photos or videos.

The tablet is equipped with a light sensor, but the auto-brightness function does not do its job very consistently. In some cases, the screen had to be forced to adjust to work on a sunny day and in a dimly lit room. Without additional settings The display fades greatly in the sun. The information, of course, can be read, but to do this you need to strain your eyesight.

There are no complaints about the screen's sensitivity to touch. Everything works correctly. There is support for multi-touch with 5 simultaneous presses.

Programs and software

id="sub4">

The tablet runs Android 5.1. At the same time, the user interface has been slightly redesigned compared to the classic Android tablet. But these changes are purely cosmetic.

In standby mode, the user has access to several desktops. By default, there is one desktop with the phone, browser, contacts, SMS and store applications removed Google Play. This list can be supplemented and changed. At the bottom there are buttons for navigation and launching the context menu.

Each new desktop can be customized to suit you. To do this, simply hold down any widget in the widget toolbar, or the icon of the corresponding application for a long time. In the future, individual programs can be grouped by meaning, for example, photos, videos and YouTube on one screen, and a calendar and notes on another.

Acer Iconia Talk 7 has a dozen pre-installed programs.

“System Doctor” (a utility that works in the image of CCleaner, deleting the application cache and unloading unused processes from RAM).

A package of Acer proprietary applications for working with files, documents, photos and music (abDocs, abFiles, abMusic, abPhoto), which respectively represent the usual file manager with uploading data to the cloud Acer Cloud, a client similar to Google Docs for viewing hosted data in the cloud office documents, a gallery of multimedia files and a simple media player. These applications are also displayed in the menu of the single “Acer Portal” - the registration program account V cloud service and integration of files on the device with their cloud copies.

From local applications It is worth noting EZ Note for taking notes, EZ Snap for taking screenshots and EZ WakeUp (unlock the screen with touches). All of them are combined into a floating EZ Gadget widget for quick access from the desktop.

Overall I liked the user interface. IN individual programs The tablet worked a little more thoughtfully than in others, but I did not experience any critical problems.

Multimedia capabilities

id="sub5">

The application for playing music is called "Music". Here you can view and listen to audio tracks. The following file formats are supported: AAC, OGG, FLAC, MP3. There is sorting by artists, albums, genres, composers. There is no FM radio app.

The “Video” item displays videos made both by the device’s camera and downloaded from the Internet. The tablet is capable of playing files in MPEG-4, MKV, H.264, H.263, MP4 formats.

Camera: photography and video

id="sub6">

The Acer Iconia Talk 7 user has two cameras at his disposal. The main camera (on the back) has a resolution of 5 megapixels and autofocus. There is no flash. The front camera has a resolution of 2 megapixels. You can only take photographs with both cameras in very good lighting. Otherwise, your photos will be washed out, with inadequate colors and white balance. In general, it is quite enough for a tablet.

The camera menu is familiar. It has a pop-up menu for switching from photo to video shooting, as well as a blur mode (a variation on the theme of taking photos with a blur effect - in practice, the function is very unstable and the quality is unsatisfactory).

The tablet records video confidently, but its quality is not much different from the photo described above - artifacts are visible, color rendition is unnatural.

The tablet can easily display video with a resolution of up to 720p. FullHD works intermittently. This is an extreme load that causes the device to heat up and the picture may jerk. It's better not to watch FullHD with this quality.

The sound module is an ordinary mediocre sound source, at the level of inexpensive Android smartphones - for comfortable listening to music (even in MP3 320 Kbps format) you want more, but for movies and simple games it’s enough.

Hardware

id="sub7">

The Acer Iconia Talk 7 is powered by a MediaTek MTK8321 chipset with a 1.3GHz quad-core Cortex-A7 processor. Random access memory here is 1 GB. Despite the fact that the amount of RAM is small, the tablet works stably. I didn’t notice any interface jerks or freezes. However, there is a performance hit when running a video or browser with multiple tabs. Slowness appears. You should take this calmly. The hardware here is the most budget-friendly, it can be forgiven for that.

If we take as a basis the games that were launched on the device, then the smoothness of their passage ( standard settings with the sound turned off) left much to be desired in most cases. Acer Iconia Talk 7 is primarily a device for reading, accessing the Internet, viewing photos, communicating on social networks, etc. It is not designed for productivity games.

The tablet has 16 GB installed internal memory, of which about 10 GB are available for use. This memory can be expanded using microSD cards up to 32 GB.

Communication capabilities

id="sub8">

The tablet works in mobile networks 2G and 3G. There is no 4G support. Maximum speed The data transfer that I observed in 3G was 9.5 Mbit/s. For communication, there are two SIM card slots: both for microSIM cards. In addition, there is Wi-Fi (802.11 a/b/g/n). Eat Bluetooth support 4.0.

The device can be used as a telephone. True, talking on a tablet is not very convenient when holding it to your ear. It is much more practical to talk through a headset or speakerphone. There are no comments regarding the quality of transmitted speech and volume. The interlocutor can be heard well.

The device has aGPS and GPS. For navigation, you can use pre-installed maps from Google or Yandex. They are quite convenient, regularly updated with new functions.

Duration of work

id="sub9">

The tablet has a lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 3380 mAh. With Wi-Fi always on and internet browsing for about 3 hours, as well as video playback for 3 hours, the battery charge is enough for one day. If you enable navigation and also allow several applications to run in the background, the time will drop by 50%. With a more economical operating mode, this value can be 3-4 days.

Charging accumulator battery in 3 hours. Recharging can be done from a contact network, a computer via a USB port or a portable battery.

Results

id="sub10">

The segment of inexpensive tablets with a screen diagonal of 7-8 inches is not just saturated, but oversaturated; there is plenty to choose from. Acer Iconia Talk 7 is typical of this class. The advantages include high-quality assembly, compact size and weight, adequate autonomy, and the ability to make phone calls.

Among the shortcomings, I would like to note the budget hardware, which does not allow it to work normally with productive games and heavy websites in the browser. The lack of LTE was also disappointing.

For an undemanding person who needs phone calls on a tablet, Iconia Talk 7 may be interesting. For other categories of consumers, the model is not so interesting. There are a dozen similar devices on the market at a slightly lower price.

Advantages

High quality build

Dual SIM support

Flaws

No 4G support

Weak camera

On the day of publication, the Acer Iconia Talk 7 tablet could be purchased at a price of 6,990 rubles.
