Smart box firmware 2.0 30. How to properly connect a router from Beeline

Many Beeline customers know about the release Wi-Fi router Smart Box and purchased it to use the Internet and interactive television. This device is positioned as a modem for fast wireless internet and meets all current standards to ensure high connection speeds.

The Beeline company issues devices for its customers

What is remarkable about Smart Box from Beeline? It is worth saying that the router is really good in terms of internal content - it supports speeds of up to 300 Mbit/s, has a fairly capacious RAM and outperforms other models in performance. The router has an additional USB port, and the only relative drawback of its design is the built-in antennas, which, however, provide a larger signal coverage area.

To initially set the router parameters, do the following:

  • Open the Smart Box menu - enter in address bar browser IP address of the device (192.168.1.1.), after the welcome message, click “Continue”.
  • In the login window, enter Admin in both lines. This data is standard; during subsequent setup, you can change it to protect the equipment parameters from outside interference.
  • Select menu " Quick setup».
  • In the window that appears, in the fields “ Home Internet» you should enter the login and key issued to you by the provider (you will find this information in the contract).
  • In the “Wi-Fi Router Network” menu lines, come up with a name home network and set an Internet access password so that the connection is inaccessible to .
  • You can activate the “Guest Network” section as you wish. If you want to create a separate network based on your router for your friends and acquaintances, come up with a name and access key for it.
  • Since the router has 4 LAN connectors, select in the bottom line the one to which you will connect the interactive set-top box television IPTV.

After entering all the necessary data, reboot the equipment from Beeline - the corresponding command will appear when you save the changes.

Configuring Wi-Fi Settings

If you want to change the Internet settings from Beeline, go to the router menu and follow these steps:

  • Select "Advanced Settings" and open Wi-Fi section, on the left, select the main settings tab.
  • The network SSID string is the name of the connection itself, which you change at your discretion.
  • You can change the operating mode and channel. It is worth setting automatic detection for the second function, then the router will be able to determine which channel to connect to. What is it for? If your neighbors also have a router installed and your device operates on the same channel, the connection may not be efficient enough. When you select automatic mode, the router will automatically switch to a less crowded channel.
  • In the same smart box menu, you can disable the guest network by checking the corresponding line (don’t forget to save changes).

Internet Connection Security

To protect your connection from unauthorized access, it is not enough just good password- it is worth choosing a reliable encryption type for Smart Box. This is done like this:

  • In the advanced settings, Wi-Fi section, select the “Security” tab in the left menu.
  • In the “Authentication” line, select the encryption type WPA2-PSK.
  • In the same window below you can change the access key to connect to the network.

Software update

Each router has separate firmware, which is constantly being refined and improved to make the device’s operation even more efficient, fast and uninterrupted. Therefore you should update from time to time Wi-Fi firmware equipment, which you can do as follows:

  • Download the new firmware from the official website of the Beeline provider.
  • We go to the initial menu of the router and select “Advanced settings”.
  • Open the “Others” section and click on the update line software(BY).
  • Select "Select file" and specify the path to the downloaded firmware.
  • The router will automatically update the software, after which you need to reboot it - disconnect and reconnect it to the power supply.

Port forwarding

Often, if you want to use a torrent client to download files or play in online applications when help Smart Box, you need to forward the port, that is, open it for the above purposes. How to do it?

This is all quite simple and will take a little time, just follow these directions:

  • Select “Advanced settings” again in the Wi-Fi router menu, “Other” section.
  • In the left menu, select the NAT, Application Support tab.
  • In the window that appears, you can select an application from the list or set your own value, for which you need to click on the “Set user service” button.
  • If you are defining your service, enter the application name, select the protocol type and the desired port range in the next two lines.

Don't forget to save all changes! If, after completing these steps, torrenting or playing games are still unavailable, try selecting the DMZ Host line in the NAT tab - enter the IP address of your computer from which you are opening the port. Did not help? In this case, the problem lies not in the router, but in the PC security settings.

As you can see, Smart setting Box from Beeline is quite simple and will allow any user to quickly and easily start using the device. Thanks to the services of the provider and a powerful router, you will be able to use wireless access to the Internet with high speed, stable operation and a strong signal.

The story is about how I made a candy rocket, or rather, transferred the router software to the Padavan firmware.
Hardware specialists, IT specialists, owners of Smart BOX Pro, please under the cat!
“Without buldrabyz”®
Clause 18 is carefully present,
Post from the section/category do it yourself! This is a technical post!
Sak bulygyz - Important: The article was written for people with hands that know how to hold a soldering iron and know how to Google!

Preface: (Pain) can be skipped:

I had asus router rt16, I lived and did not grieve. (could have ended there)
It's 2014. I was supposed to become a young dad, my daughter was going to be born soon.
I wanted a powerful router, no worse than the asus rt16, and it had 5 GHz wifi support!
I started choosing a router for myself: take the kineticist, they shouted from the depths of the forums, the wallet said: we won’t pull it.
Here an advertisement appeared: “Hey guy, if you want a router for free, take it,” the advertisement said, but under the conditions, you take the Internet for 1 year and get the router for free.
I immediately Googled and came across an article on Habré “no router from your ISP, no need.”
There seemed to be no signs of trouble - beautiful hardware CPU1: MediaTek MT7621AT (880 MHz, 2 cores)
RAM: 256 MiB (ESMT F59L2G81A-25T), gigabit ports, Wi-Fi 5 hertz, two USB ports, that’s it I thought!
An inner voice said: listen! - and the guy who takes your VPN will continue to take it for another 1 year? - Yes, I answered in my thoughts! And then the wallet shouted: “The budget has been allocated - adjustments have been made.
That's how I became the owner of Smart BOX Pro.
Having installed the router after RT16 for about 3 months, I was overwhelmed with work and forgot about it.
Slowly, shortcomings of the router began to emerge, ahaahhah naive Chukchi boy - free cheese only in a mousetrap!
The router was created by Sercom, commissioned by Beeline.
It looked like a redrawn simple gui, but there was no torrent, and no one claimed it.
There is no VPN server. There is a long server, but when it encountered Cyrillic on the disk, it froze completely.
Load per processor in idle time 23%, settings of forwarded ports are forgotten after a restart, intensive googling for alternative firmware said

: “There will be no miracle”

Memory in a Nand device with a locked bootloader.
There were people like me on the ixbt forum. After reading many pages I came to the short conclusion that rgmi 2 was cut off from the van port to light bulbs and it became a pseudo gigabit.
As a result, on the forum one could come across the statement: throw it away, buy a normal router.
Everything was very sad.
The thought was that the investment was in vain, but then I remembered that it was worth a whopping 5,990 rubles at that time. I remembered about the identified jamb in the server length and decided to make a ticket to the provider’s technical support, this was the month of July/June 2015.
Technical support worked quickly, we connected remotely and found that the problem was real and that was all.
Once every six months since 2014, I called Beeline and asked how things were going with my ticket, to which they endlessly transferred me - once to the head of the department with complaints from clients. There they answered me, “The young man, the router is working, what are your complaints?” to which I objected: but the server does not work correctly, and it is stated in the router and your specialists confirm this, to which this inadequate person answered me - this is not our router, but from the Sercom company, contact them.
I objected - the router was created by order of Beeline and sold under the Beeline brand - from Beeline, it immediately became a non-Beeline router, to which they simply dropped the call.
A call to Moscow Sercom yielded nothing: if the piece of hardware is short, ask the customer.
Time passed, my daughter was born in December 2014, in 2016 I also called unsuccessfully, to which I received an answer like wait for the firmware, the firmware is not written so quickly, well, probably just another programmer was not born) I should have already had a son, then in my head and the thought came up that he would inherit the router, maybe they’ll write the firmware by this time.
In July 2018, firmware 2.0.19 finally appeared, I don’t know what they have already changed there, it seems they have already forgotten the promise to call back when the firmware comes out.
My knowledge grew in the field of it and hardware. And already in 2018, at the end of March and beginning of April, I looked askance at the Smart BOX Pro and wondered if the time had passed to open you up and do something good.
My hands were itching, but my sober mind said that knowledge was still not enough, until I came across a comment on Muska that said, “The Nand guys change and sew flash on a spy flash, and I asked for a link. And how it turned out...
After talking with people on the forum, I came to an understanding of how to change nand to spi memory.

Oh man - that you wanted to remake the router -
The rest is one way, be careful!
Remember, everything is presented as is, and there is a big risk of not reaching the end if you break your equipment, then only you are to blame! In general, “The road can be mastered by those who walk!”
Given:
Smart box pro router - 1 piece
Straight arms - 1 pair
Soldering iron - 1 piece
Flash memory W25Q128FVSIG 1 piece
Bright heads - Legion :)
Not required, but recommended to have:
1) Soldering Hair Dryer or Wood/Rose-Friends Alloy with or without a programmer!

Action plan:
1) Make a backup of calibrations and firmware. (important and mandatory, do not proceed to step 2 until you make a backup)
2) Disassembly and re-soldering: resistor chip / flash / nand desoldering
3) Assembling firmware from the Prometheus project: yes, it is there!
4) Return of native calibrations.
Stage 2 can be performed last, depending on what is more convenient for you, but I prefer it 2)

Let's go: Stage 1

1) Connect to the smart box pro - super user login SuperUser, password will be Beeline$martB0x or SFXXXXXXXXXX where ХХХХ is serial number devices on the back of the router on a sticker or in the router menu under regular user. We rewrite the Mac addresses of Lan and Wifi will come in handy.
We thank “Mad Geek” for the information that he began to remake a simple smart box (another model), but unfortunately did not reach the finished result.
Having received super user rights, we open access via SSH, connect with the PuTTY program, do not forget to insert a flash drive with the “FAT32” file system into the router
In PuTTY, after your login and password, enter the command “sh” (“”), no need to enter quotes!
then each line is a separate command, wait for it to complete

In the root of the flash drive or the “mtd_backup” folder, files called mtd(X) X should appear - numbers from 0 to 12.
Remove the USB flash drive from the router and save a copy of the firmware in a safe place.

2) We order in advance a 16 MB flash drive W25Q128FVSIG, with the help of the ch341 programmer you can also order it or flash it (For flashing, use the “Calibri” software or an analogue)
Stage 2A) open the router. Unscrew one screw (closed with a decorative plug), apply a little pressure along the edges and the router case is disconnected, free the board, unscrew 3 screws - at the same time figuring out what we have in the bins and what to put on the processor as a heatsink.
Stage 2B) The most dangerous stage, so we have a board in front of us and in order to boot from the spi flash we need to resolder 2 resistors, resistors from position R136 -> to R145 and R156 -> 157, in total - 2 small resistors near the same others! We take a soldering iron, set the tip type K - the soldering iron is at a temperature of 300 degrees since it is lead-free soldering, a little solder flux for quick bonding, rattle / unsolder / find the desired pad and solder. Next, we solder our 8-legged flash drive to position U8.

Where is this on the board?

Everything is fine? Didn’t they unsolder anything unnecessary, didn’t they kill the board with static? -NO!
Stage 2B) The spi and nand flash tracks intersect, we need to remove the nand memory. It's simple: apply a little flux, take a soldering hair dryer - (on mine the temperature is about 360 degrees) heat it up, blow off/raise the microcircuit!

Where is she located?

Wait - what hair dryer? no hairdryer! It doesn’t matter, let’s go to the radio market (or to our bins), buy a wood/rose alloy, take a couple of flakes, tin them on both sides, generously on the legs of the flash. Melted? we lift it up, clean the tracks from the alloy, and where we soldered everything, clean it with alcohol?/well, or whatever you have at hand, I use galoshes (budget is a delicate matter)

A sign that you have done/soldered everything is unsoldered correctly and did not kill anything, you can check something like this: on the router we hold down bottom of the board reset button and turn it on, the LED will start blinking in a different rhythm, indicating that it is in recovery mode.

Resoldered and almost ready

But it is not exactly

Congratulations, you have reached the third stage)
Stage 3) We are not assembling the router yet, why? - What if it was soldered crookedly, the flash turned out to be a bit?
We connect the wire to lan 2 or any one you like, but not wan. Download the ASUS Firmware Restoration utility version 2.0.0.0 and change the ip on the network card 192.168.1.2 mask 255.255.255.0.
We launch the utility and indicate the firmware to it, on the router we press bottom of the board reset button and turn it on, in Firmware Restoration click download, it will see the router and flash it!
We return the settings on the PC network card.
Got it? Yes, let's go to stage 4!
-NO?
-I don’t know - doesn’t sew - and doesn’t see everything.
No problem! Take a flash drive with the file system "Fat32" Copy the firmware to the root of the flash drive, rename it to "root_uImage" without ().Insert it into the router and press it bottom of the board reset button and turn it on, hold the reset until the lights on the router blink quickly, about 5-8 seconds as soon as the blinking stops. Appears wifi network Asus? Congratulations!
Now let's put everything back together! We install a heatsink on the processor and drill into the case

holes for air circulation

Or maybe we even install a cooler from Vidyakha or even print a new case on a 3D printer. Yeah, I was daydreaming :), but a radiator with ventilation is needed since the MT7621AT is hot and can burn out at work)

Ahhh where can I get the firmware?
-You'll have to assemble it yourself!
Thanks to me and the good people in the project in the project. The line Sercom has appeared in the linaro repository - and you can select it - then smartbox. We are assembling our own firmware.
The buttons on the router are caught, the reset will be restored, the mode switch will switch modes, the wps button will work as you indicate in the menu! - HAPPINNES EXISTS!
Respect Padavana's work and do not distribute ready-made firmware builds. May the one who walks master the road)
It seems like we all won? - NO!

Stage 4 - Final!

Remember stage one? We take our dump, namely mtd2.
We are interested in the first 64KB!!! Cut with Vinex/

About Winnex

open our mtd2 dump in it, click Edit / there / define block / in the window that appears, the beginning is 0 and type in the second line “FFFF” (”) without quotes, click ok, immediately click / Edit / there / copy blok or copy the block, depending from whom it is written in the menu / select in / new file, save it.
In the saved dump we drive our poppies at offset addresses 0x4 for a 2.4 hertz network and 0x8004 for a 5 hertz network.
Give a name for example ibykota.bin, the file size will be 64KB

We copy our calibrations to the router - I used winscp, copy it to /tmp on the router and issue the command in PuTTY
" mtd_write write /tmp/ibykota.bin Factory " without ()
We receive our macs calibrated from the factory!
then give the command “Reboot”
Is step 4 required? it works?
-yes, it is required, since the bootloader is assembled with corrected other calibrations, which should not be in the bootloader, it is not complete and most likely the 5GHz Wi-Fi will not start.
- Why then did you assemble a loader with calibrations?
-The bootloader with calibrations is assembled in order to reduce the hassle with the programmer, Winex, TTL adapter, because with a clean bootloader the firmware will not start.

- Am I doing well now? - if you received a working router, you returned your calibrations - YES!

If all is well, it will look something like this:

Having loaded the router with six torrent downloads, the load on the cpu increased to 23-27%. Copying from a computer to a 15 GB movie disk showed 20-30-40 MB/s at peak, file system ext4 disk.
The CPU load at the time of file copying also remained around 27% when the service was enabled online viewing attached USB web camera (0.3 mpx 640x480), the load at the time of copying rose to 34%. iperf3 tests showed a pure etheret speed of 930mbit/s at peak and an average of 910mbit/s. It is necessary to take into account that the router is in access point mode, the head one is mikrotik rb3011.

Result: From a powerful router with broken software, we made a candy that makes our lives happy with a VPN, a torrent downloader, a print server, with 2 USB ports, a powerful processor, large RAM, gigabit ports and the ability to install additional packages from the repository.

Thanks to: Padavan for the firmware, Freize for the Prometheus project, linaro for adding smart box pro to his repository, and one more thing to the gray cardinal, that he decided to stay in the shadows - he helped me adapt the firmware and bootloader. Well, I have mastered this road for everyone. I give (+) kudos to their karma and budget!
I would like to express my special thanks to the store for providing the tool; only its mention in this review prompted my laziness to write this review, having honestly worked on it. Use good tool for work, I soldered with it, because straight hands and a good tool, a couple of bright minds, 90% success in business! - and 10% what? - This is luck, in April 2018, while searching for resistor chips on the board, I killed this router to the point of brick, and only a month later, when I received the soldering iron, it came back to life. The soldering iron itself was inspected on the muska - up and down, so I don’t see the point of inspecting it nakedly. I can say that if you decide to go into amateur radio or switch from EPSN or switch from Hakko 900, this is what you need! It is as convenient as an EPSN soldering iron, there is no input lag as with Hakko, and it has all its advantages. This whole alteration is a coincidence; if they had rolled out the striped, more or less promised normal firmware, this post would never have existed!

Have you finished reading? Do you have such a router, but your hands are not from there? -Think...
Good luck to everyone!

The Beeline provider, in order to keep up with others, decided to release its own router, which connects to networks of this operator configured in a couple of clicks. Offered under the name Smart Box router built on a unified Realtek 8197D processor and equipped with 64 MB of memory.

In fact, all the complaints that there may be about the operation of this device relate rather to the firmware. We hope it will be fixed soon. Let's look at how a branded Beeline router needs to be configured, and also how to update its firmware.

Router "Beeline Smart Box"

On the rear panel, in addition to the standard set of ports and the power button, you see an operating mode switch. The “router” mode is activated when the toggle switch knob is in the up position. The second mode is “switch”.

We will look at how to set up a connection with the Beeline provider. To do this, you can connect a computer to the router via a patch cord or by wireless network(which works in mixed mode b/g/n, it is given the name “Smart_box-…”). Finally, we will look at how to update the firmware. The firmware version current at the time of creation of the review is 2.0.19.

Connection setup

As is easy to understand, you need to connect the Beeline cord connector to the WAN port. You can access the router’s web interface from a wired or Wi-Fi network (the latter works without a password).

The actions should be as follows: having connected all the cables, supply power to the router, wait 1 minute, open the web interface. The requirement for setting up a network card is to set the “automatic” mode:

Setting up a wired connection on your computer

On wireless cards, they also enable a similar mode (“auto” DNS and IP). The parameter values needed to open the web interface are given below.

How to open the GUI?

If a wired network is used to configure the router, the patch cord is connected to one of the LAN ports. To LAN card received IP and DNS from the router, you need to right-click on the connection icon and click “Fix”. You can connect to a wireless network without a password; its name is “Smart_box-XXXXXX”.

Let us remind you that the router takes at least a minute to load. The graphical interface address of Smart Box is standard and equal to 192.168.1.1. The default password is the same as the login, this is the word admin:

Login GUI

Setting up a connection with Beeline

While on the start tab of the interface, click the “Quick setup” button. The following page will open:

Connection setup

Here you need to set the parameters:

  1. Subscriber login of the form “089XXXXXX” (read the contract)
  2. The subscriber's password is what is specified in the contract
  3. “Network name” – you can leave it as is
  4. "Password" - meaning Wi-Fi password(may not be used at first)
  5. We will not enable the guest Wi-Fi network
  6. Select one LAN port for the TV set-top box, if required (just not the one that is currently in use)
  7. Click “Save”

Firmware update

The built-in program for the router, that is, the firmware, can be downloaded from the official Beeline website. The firmware file takes 16 or 17 megabytes. Save it to your “desktop”. Next, we will look at how to reinstall the firmware in a Smart Box router, and most importantly, how not to make things worse.

Preliminary actions

It is best to perform a factory reset before updating the firmware. Turn on the router, wait 2 minutes, press reset with a paper clip (the button must be held for 10-15 seconds). The LEDs should blink, then the router will boot again (but with the default settings).

We will install the firmware by connecting the router to the PC via a wired network. It is necessary. Reinstalling the software is carried out for the sole purpose: to rid the router of the “bugs” of the previous firmware. If everything works well, there is no need to reinstall anything.

It is important to know that while transferring the firmware file, you cannot turn off the power or break the connection between the devices. After the installation is complete, it is better to wait another 5 minutes, and only then briefly press reset.

We update the firmware via the web interface

Go to the configuration GUI as discussed above. On the start tab, click the “Advanced settings” button. Then, select the “Others” tab -> “Software Update”:

Reinstalling the firmware

Sequencing:

  1. Click “Select file”, find the file on the “desktop” and click “Open”
  2. Check the connection again and click “Update”
  3. Wait for the reinstallation to complete
  4. Wait 5-6 minutes
  5. Briefly press the reset button on the router

Happy setup!
