Samsung smartphones from A to S. We understand the models from the Korean manufacturer

Before moving on to discussing the smartphone, I want to apologize to our readers for such a serious delay in this material, there were objective and not so good reasons. Now let's begin.

The site already has two materials about Samsung Galaxy S, these are my thoughts about the device immediately after its announcement, as well as a detailed first look from Eldar Murtazin. From these articles you could get a fairly complete impression of the device, so in the review I will not go into detail, but rather will simply describe what the Galaxy S is like in reality after several weeks of active use of the device.

Positioning

Since the announcement and after the start of sales, as well as now, when the device is (temporarily?) discontinued, its positioning has not changed in any way. This is still top-end Android from Samsung, still a flagship and simply one of the most technologically advanced smartphones on this OS. Among the things that determine the positioning we can note Super Amoled screen, a processor with a frequency of 1 GHz, the presence of a built-in graphics coprocessor, and so on. The company uses almost all of its latest developments in this device, including software.

Design, body materials

My subjective impression of most Samsung devices is the same - they do not evoke any emotions in me. Partly, perhaps, I myself am to blame for this, on the other hand, and the company does not make much effort in terms of updating the design of its products, Samsung devices are often emotionless, for my taste, and of the same type. I don't know if this is good or not for a top-end smartphone, but the Galaxy S represents the height of boring design, in my opinion.

The device is made of glossy plastic, along the perimeter of the front side there is a frame made of plastic, reminiscent of a chrome surface. The battery cover is made of plastic with a pattern. All together, these materials form a “point-and-shoot” smartphone, which in the hand feels like an inexpensive phone; another drawback in this regard is the light weight of the device. It would weigh a little more, and the weighty feel would be offset a bit by the inexpensive materials, but it doesn't.

The surface of the back side is easily soiled, but marks and prints are practically invisible. Another thing is the rapid wear of the surface; many tiny scratches and abrasions remain on it, and after just a couple of weeks of use the device already loses its neat appearance. The solution to the problem may be to use a case or simply use the smartphone very carefully. The screen surface is easily soiled, but this is a problem with all devices with large touch screens.

The smartphone is dark blue, if my vision serves me correctly. The battery cover “plays” with colors; in the sun it appears dark blue, and in low light it appears black.

The build quality is good, there are no complaints here. During two weeks of operation, nothing in the device became loose, and no play in the halves appeared.

Dimensions

The dimensions of the Galaxy S are comparable to Apple iPhone 4 and HTC Desire, although I would even compare it with the HTC HD2, it is a little narrower, but just as tall:

  • Samsung Galaxy S- 122,4 x 64.2 x 9.9 mm, 119 g
  • HTCHD2- 120.5 x 67 x 11 mm, 157 g
  • Sony Ericsson X10- 119 x 63 x 13 mm, 135 g
  • HTC Desire- 119 x 60 x 12 mm, 135 g
  • Apple iPhone 3GS- 115.5 x 58.6 x 9.3 mm, 137 g

Despite the fact that on paper the dimensions of the device are large, in reality, when you take it in your hand, it does not seem so big. So if we compare with how, for example, HTC HD2 and Galaxy S feel, then the first one feels like a shovel in the hands, and the second one feels like just a smartphone, it’s comfortable to hold, it’s comfortable to talk on it for a long time. By the way, light weight also plays a role here. It is convenient to carry the “eska” in the pockets of trousers and jeans; due to the small thickness of the case, it will fit even into narrow pockets.

Controls

In respect of Samsung control Galaxy S is very simple - there are three keys below the screen: call context menu, a confirmation button and a “Back” key, a double volume button on the left edge and a lock key (screen off) on the right. The central key under the screen is hardware, those to the left and right of it are touch sensitive.

In general, many users, including me, when first getting acquainted with a smartphone, have the feeling that the key under the screen is also Touchpad. This feeling arises because Samsung devices often use this type of touchpad, and this key really resembles a touchpad. However, in the case of the Galaxy S, it's a simple button.

Personally, after talking with devices from HTC and Acer, the Samsung Galaxy S really lacked a search button. Of course, in a smartphone, wherever it is required, there is a soft “Search” key, but most “robots” are still equipped with a hardware search button, albeit a touch one.

The volume key on the smartphone is convenient, there are no complaints about it. As for the screen unlock button, some users who are accustomed to the location of this key on the top end will find it inconvenient. For others, on the contrary, the location of the assembly key will be familiar, so it’s a matter of getting used to it, and nothing more.

On the front side, in the upper part, there is a speaker covered with a mesh. To the left of the speaker there is a light sensor and a proximity sensor. On the right is the VGA camera eye. The smartphone does not have a light indicator, none at all. This tendency of manufacturers to abandon indicators, in my opinion, is as stupid and unjustified as the abandonment of hardware camera keys. HTC Company At one time she abandoned the camera buttons, and now she is gradually returning it. I hope the same thing will happen with Samsung, and hardware camera keys, as well as light indicators, will gradually begin to appear again in future devices. In the meantime, in the Samsung Galaxy S, to find out if someone has called you, if there are new messages, and simply if the smartphone is working at all, or if it has died, you need to turn on the screen.

For some users, it will be good news that the smartphone has an eyelet for a strap or cord. This mount is located on the left edge of the smartphone just above the volume key. At the top end there is a microUSB connector for connecting to a PC and charging; it is closed with a sliding cap. There is also a 3.5 mm jack for headphones and headsets.

And everything would be fine, but the Samsung Galaxy S has one completely incomprehensible and inexplicable feature associated with this connector. In any modern smartphone you can connect headphones or a headset. In both cases, you can talk on the phone while the accessory is connected. If you connect a headset, you hear the interlocutor through it and also speak into it (into the microphone on the headset), and if you connect headphones, you also hear the interlocutor through the headphones, and speak into the microphone of the device itself, simply by bringing it closer to you. Both methods are logical. If you have your favorite headphones and you want to listen to music on your smartphone through them, then why not talk through the headphones too? In the Samsung Galaxy S, when you connect headphones, not a headset, during a conversation you will not hear the interlocutor through the headphones, the sound will go to the speaker of the smartphone itself. Why was this restriction introduced?

The mount for the SIM card and microSD memory card is located above the battery, so that the SIM card cannot be removed without first removing the battery. The memory card can be changed without turning off the smartphone or removing the battery; just remove the battery cover.

Screen

The device uses a Super AMOLED touchscreen display from Samsung. Screen diagonal 4”, resolution 800x480 pixels (WVGA), display displays up to 16 million colors. The screen has maximum viewing angles, it remains highly readable in the sun even on a bright sunny day, and the display has simply enormous contrast and brightness reserves.

The display is capacitive type, multi-touch is supported, both in the main menu to display a matrix of screens, and in various applications: in Google maps, in the browser, when viewing pictures. The screen is covered with glass, the material can be scratched if desired, but in case of accidental contact with keys and other similar objects there will be no scratches, even if you try to scratch the surface, for example, with a simple knife.

Now let me be a little subjective. Personally, I am convinced that screens like Super AMOLED will not take root. Not only because the company itself is still experiencing difficulties with their mass production and because the energy consumption of such displays is very high. The whole point is that if an ordinary TFT screen With good resolution and a high-quality picture is simply pleasing to the eye, and this statement is true for most users, then with Super AMOLED everything is different. There are people who like the excessive contrast of this screen and its high brightness, even at its minimum level, and there are those who simply cannot get used to such screen characteristics. So I can't say that the display on the Galaxy S is simply one of the best. Yes, he is one of the best in terms of contrast, maximum level brightness and clarity of the picture, but, in my opinion, the first two parameters are excessive, and this makes the screen controversial.

Camera

The smartphone is equipped with a 5 MP camera with autofocus. The camera eye is located in the upper left part of the rear side of the case, flush with the surface of the battery cover. If you often place the device with the lid down, scratches will remain on the surface of the camera eye, so it is better to be careful in this regard.

In viewfinder mode, the screen displays basic information, selected settings, shooting mode, current resolution and the remaining number of frames in two columns (left and right). To call additional settings you need to click the icon on the bottom left.

The following resolutions are available for photos:

  • 2560x1920
  • 2560x1536
  • 2040x1536
  • 2048x1232
  • 1600x1200
  • 1600x960
  • and below

In the settings you can also select the image quality, shooting mode and other parameters.

I will not describe in detail how well or how poorly the camera in the Samsung Galaxy S takes pictures. Each reader can draw his own conclusions based on sample images. However, I want to say this: objectively, if you compare images taken with the Samsung Galaxy S, HTC Desire, HTC Legend, Acer Liquid E and several other recent Android devices, the “esque” is in the lead. The pictures taken by this device are the best, of course, not ideal, but with a simple comparison you will see the difference. So we can say that among “robots” the Samsung Galaxy S has one of the best photographic components. By the way, the same can be said about video recording.

Examples of pictures from the camera:

Video

Video is recorded in 3GP format (H264 codec) at 30 frames per second.

The following resolutions are available for video:

  • 1280x720
  • 720x480
  • 640x480
  • 320x240
  • 176x144

The settings in video mode are the same as those in photo mode. You can use the zoom function while recording video. You can evaluate the quality of the video using the examples below.

Autonomous operation

The device uses Li-Ion battery capacity 1500 mAh. The manufacturer claims up to 13.5 hours of talk time (GSM) and up to 750 hours (30 days) of standby time. These data are greatly, more than twice, exaggerated.

Under standard conditions (30-40 minutes of calls per day, sending 10-15 text messages, customized Gmail accounts and MS Exchange Server with push-mail) my Samsung Galaxy S sample worked for an average of one and a half days. If you add to these functions the Internet (1-2 hours a day) and listening to music for 3-4 hours a day, then the operating time is reduced to a day. In any case, these are good indicators compared to devices from HTC (Desire). The smartphone confidently lasts a working day and even more, you don’t need to charge it in the car on the way home, you don’t need to unplug it in the morning just before going to work, so that it doesn’t suddenly find itself 80% charged and doesn’t die in the middle of the day (this is a stone in garden of new HTC devices).

Performance

The smartphone is built on the Samsung S5PC100 platform (ARM8 Cortex), with a 1 GHz processor and a PowerVR SGX540 graphics coprocessor. Until recently, the company did not use this platform, but now a tablet from the company also works on it in parallel with the Galaxy S - Galaxy Tab. By the way, the Meizu M9 smartphone that I personally expected (I advise you about this device) is also built on the basis of this platform.

The device has 512 MB of RAM and 8/16 GB of memory for data storage. As for video playback. Even when the device was just announced and stated support for the following formats: Mpeg4, H.264, H.263, H263Sorenson, DivX/ XviD, VC-1, formats: 3gp (mp4), WMV (asf), AVI (divx), MKV ( container), FLV, it was clear that the company expected to present the strongest smartphone among “robots” in terms of such a parameter as “convenience of watching videos.” In practice, nothing has changed; the smartphone really “chews” videos, TV series and films in all common formats without any problems and plays videos up to 720p resolution without any problems.

I personally did not have any complaints about the overall speed of the smartphone during two weeks of use; I can’t say that everything “flies” and whistles on it, but working on the device was very comfortable, just like on the HTC Desire, for example. At the same time, I can apparently enroll myself in the club of those lucky ones who are simply lucky. After all, now that the smartphone has been on sale for a long time, we can say with confidence that the Samsung Galaxy S has obvious performance problems.

I will not describe the problem and its solution called lagfix in detail; those who have encountered these difficulties already know everything. You can read about this in detail. In my case, there were no special delays or slowdowns in work.

Interfaces

The smartphone operates in GSM (850/900/1800/1900) and UMTS (900/1900/2100) networks. Both high-speed data transfer standards are supported - EDGE and HSDPA. Enabling and disabling different communication modules can be done in the settings menu or using the system panel, which extends from above. This aspect of the device is thought out very well; all interfaces are presented in this panel, and they can be turned on or off with one touch.

To synchronize with a PC and transfer data, the included microUSB cable is used. USB interface 2.0. When connecting to a computer, you can select one of several connection types, including data transfer (the memory of the microSD card and inner memory smartphone) or synchronization with a PC.

Built-in module Bluetooth 3.0. The following profiles are supported:

  • Audio/Video Remote Control Profile (AVRCP) - control music playback from a wireless headset.
  • Generic Audio/Video Distribution Profile (GAVDP)
  • Audio/Video Distribution Transport Protocol (AVDTP)
  • Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP) - stereo audio transmission via Bluetooth
  • Hands-Free Profile 1.5
  • Human Interface Device (HID)
  • File Transfer Profile (FTP)
  • Object Push Profile (OPP)

Sound quality when listening to music through wireless headphones not bad.

Wi-Fi (802.11b/g/n). The operation of the Wi-Fi module did not cause any complaints. On your smartphone, you can configure rules for Wi-Fi to go into sleep mode, use only a static IP address when connecting, and add security certificates. At Wi-Fi work The smartphone practically does not heat up, at least the heating is minimal and barely noticeable in comparison with the same HTC HD2, where the body heats up noticeably when the Wi-Fi module is active. In addition to supporting all modern versions of Wi-Fi, the device supports the DLNA protocol.

Navigation

Samsung Galaxy S has a built-in GPS chip. A cold start takes about one and a half minutes, then searching for satellites takes 10-20 seconds (testing was carried out using the Maverick program, available in the Market). According to my feelings, the quality of satellite signal reception on the Galaxy S is no worse or better than that of its closest competitors or other “robots”; all of these devices are at approximately the same level in terms of their navigation component.

The device has two programs for navigation. First - Google Maps . Using this application, you can get directions (not accompanied by voice prompts), search for addresses by street names or places (restaurant, cafe, proper name of an institution, etc.). The advantage of the application over more functional navigation software is that maps are downloaded from the Internet, and, accordingly, in theory, all major cities in the world are available to you for navigation, no matter where you are. The main thing is to have Internet access. This is the main disadvantage of Google Maps; without an Internet connection, the application becomes inoperative. Maps of major cities are available for Russia: Moscow, St. Petersburg, Samara, Kazan, Nizhny Novgorod, Chelyabinsk, Novosibirsk, Yekaterinburg, Perm and others.

Second application - Navifon, this program is good for simple phones, where the resources of the devices do not allow the use of full-fledged navigation software, but on the Samsung Galaxy S its presence looks strange. Although, of course, something is better than nothing.

Entering text

The Samsung Galaxy S uses the popular Swype keyboard for typing. What it is? Swype is to the world of on-screen keyboards for Android what the Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000 is to the world of 10-finger touch keyboards. That is, Swype certainly has everything for entering text, however, in my opinion, it is far from the most convenient keyboard for Android. Especially when it comes to the Russian language layout, in which the letters turn out to be very narrow, and hitting them is problematic at first, it takes some getting used to.

Another disadvantage of the keyboard is the difficulty in switching languages. IN latest version Swype now has a key for switching languages, and in the version installed on most Galaxy S, it looks like this. To switch the language, you need to click on the keyboard, on the settings button, then select Language and then select the required language from the list, confirm the choice - and voila, you have switched the language. Simple, isn't it? In fact, the keyboard, of course, provides for quick language switching. To do this, you need to make a finger stroke from the “information” (i) key upward, but how can you find out about this just by using your phone? I don’t know, it’s not mentioned on the first pages of the Swype help; you have to figure it out yourself, perhaps.

Among the advantages of the keyboard, the following can be noted. First of all, once you get used to Swype, you can type really quickly. Secondly, the keyboard itself has a huge number of settings, and it can be very finely adjusted to suit you. Customizable and placement capital letters, and automatic insertion of spaces, accompaniment of clicks with sound or vibration, as well as other parameters.

Software

The smartphone runs Android 2.1 OS and uses the company's proprietary TouchWiz shell as an interface. In this review, I will not describe in detail all the features of the interface in the Galaxy S, but will focus on the main positive and negative aspects. Let's start with what's good.

The smartphone has a lot of additional software. In my opinion, this is a plus. I meet people who grumble about this: “they installed a lot of programs, and then I have to figure out what is needed and what is not.” However, it’s worth looking at it from a different angle: Galaxy S comes pre-installed convenient program for reading books, beautiful application for taking notes, a program for travelers, for reading RSS news, moreover, this is one of the first Android smartphones with pre-installed file manager, which I personally sincerely wish for products from HTC. Yes, most applications cannot be deleted, but with the amount of memory that the Samsung Galaxy S has, I don’t think this is a problem.

The smartphone also has a voice recorder, a calculator with the ability to switch to engineering mode, and several other utilities.

Now about the cons. The first drawback is the incomplete localization of the dialer and interface in the address book. I often find that the HTC smartphones that I test do not have a Cyrillic scroll bar in the address book. However, in the case of HTC, this feature remains in engineering and test samples, while the latest devices hit the market with the Russian language in this stripe. In the Galaxy S, including the commercial version, there is no Russian language on the strip for scrolling through contacts. It is also not in the dialer.

Second drawback. For some inexplicable reasons, the developer decided to remove most of the standard widgets offered by the Android operating system from the smartphone. This may seem like a small thing to some, but it is not. The fact is that widgets from Samsung, in my opinion, have not developed in any way for a couple of years now, and therefore are mostly useless; widgets in the Galaxy S are no exception. The main complaint against them is the impossibility of choosing the size of the widget, and most of them are either full screen or half screen. If in any other Android smartphone I drag the clock widget onto the screen and can drag about 10 more program icons onto the same screen, then in the Galaxy S the proprietary clock widget alone will take up most of the screen. And so with all other mini-programs.

Conclusion

While using the Samsung Galaxy S, I had no complaints about the quality of signal reception or the volume of the speaker and ringing speakers. Both of them are loud, so you can only miss a call or not hear the other person in a very noisy environment; in other situations there are no problems. The vibration alert is average in strength; personally, I sometimes missed it.

About the price. The official price tag for Samsung Galaxy S averages 28,000 rubles at the beginning of October. Gray devices can be easily found for 18,000-19,000 rubles; the difference between “white” and “gray” smartphones is simply colossal. The gray Galaxy S costs the same as the gray HTC Desire, while the Samsung smartphone has a larger screen diagonal, better camera, there is a built-in memory array for storing data. On the side of the HTC Desire is a more convenient shell (yes, I can’t stop saying this), the presence of an optical trackball for navigating the menu and a slightly more compact size, as well as the device’s greater readiness out of the box to work as a smartphone just for calls and messages, mail .

For me everyone new flagship from Samsung, which I used and reviewed, was controversial in its own way. This happened with the Samsung i900 (WiTu), and this happened with the Samsung i8000 (WiTu 2). However, then, despite all the controversy of the devices for me personally, I knew for sure that in general these smartphones were unambiguous hits, and all their disadvantages, visible to me, were mostly a matter of taste. In the case of the Samsung Galaxy S, the situation is different - for all its advantages, the device has visible disadvantages: inexpensive case materials and the general tactile sensations of working with the device, not best keyboard for quick adaptation, incomplete localization. However, at the price you can buy a Galaxy S for today, it's still one of the best deals among "robots", even if you have to spend a little time getting to know it.

In this article we will review the Samsung Galaxy S3 i9300. Samsung Galaxy SIII is a rather sensational model that is in demand despite the fact that it came out quite a long time ago. Let's take a closer look this model smartphone.

Visual inspection

Packaging and delivery

The packaging of the smartphone, as always, did not surprise us with anything new. As for the delivery set, it is standard. The box includes a standard set: smartphone, headphones (with a set of spare earbuds), USB cable (USB-microUSB), charger and instructions. For those who do not know, I want to say that the battery is not inserted into the phone, but is included separately in the package.

Design

Delivery this smartphone out of the box, I also didn’t see anything new, or rather, at least any changes in design, since the Samsung Galaxy S3 immediately reminded me of another gadget, but not its predecessor Samsung Galaxy S2 - no, but strangely enough the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. Same shape, same lines, even the side buttons are the same size and in the same places. I immediately asked myself: why make devices that visually do not carry anything particularly new, except for an internal upgrade.

As for the body, it's impressive big screen, but the fly in the ointment in all this is introduced by the back cover of the device, which is made of plastic, and also glossy. And it was precisely this cover that caused a negative impression on me, since with all confidence we can say that in the future, scratches will appear on its surface and become very noticeable. Therefore, initially you will need to buy either a case or protective film, if you want to protect the surface of the cover. The lid itself is thin and bends very much, so it must be removed very carefully.

At the top of the front panel there is a speech speaker in the center, on the right there are two sensors: proximity and light, as well as a front camera. On the back panel, the main video camera is located in the upper center, there is an LED flash to the left of the camera, and a speaker to the right.

Now let's look at the buttons. At the bottom of the front panel, in the center, the device has the same “Home” button. There are 2 touch buttons on both sides of this mechanical button: on the left – calling up the context menu, on the right – the return key. On the left side panel there is a volume rocker. On the right side panel there is a button to turn on the smartphone.

At the top of the smartphone there is a headphone output, shifted to the left, and in the center there is a recess for prying and removing the back cover. An additional microphone is located on the right side of the top panel. On the bottom panel in the center there is a microUSB connector for connecting charger and for connecting to a computer. To the right of the connector is the main microphone of the gadget.

Impressions from the design

Having made my first visual review of the Samsung Galaxy S3, I was left with mixed impressions. On the one hand, the device is quite large, all the buttons, sensors and speakers are conveniently placed on it - this is pleasing, but the lack of any visual design innovations and the plastic body are depressing. While smartphones from other companies are introducing some new materials, for example, HTC has a polycarbonate body that fits very well in the hand, and the glossy plastic body of the S3 is, let’s say, a thing of the past. Well, again, this is not an acquired taste, I expressed my subjective point of view in this review.

Job overview and Galaxy functions S3

After turning on the device, you are immediately impressed by the large and bright screen, image clarity and good sensor. There is no grain on the screen, that is, the pixels are not visible - it is very good that by increasing the diagonal of the screen, its resolution also improves. Overall it is worth noting the pleasant Android interface and his work. It is very difficult to convey in words the operation of the device, so you can see it in the video below. Next we will describe the operation of specific functions.

Intelligent anticipation

Samsung boasted on its official website that it has an intelligent standby function. This function, when activated, is capable, according to the manufacturers, of capturing the user’s gaze and if he looks at the smartphone screen, the screen will not turn off and go into standby mode. Personally, I don’t understand why there was such a need to promote this function, especially to include it in the innovations and advantages of the gadget, if it is implemented, to put it mildly, poorly. Even if the function worked, in the end it was temporary and the screen went dark. For the function to work correctly, it is possible that you need to adapt to it, pointing the device at the desired angle - but this is stupid. I welcome the good intentions of introducing this feature as a user, but its implementation is very poor.

Of course, you can’t help but test the S Voice function, which many call a prototype of the famous SIRI. But in my opinion, the comparison with SIRI is clearly not correct. Yes, the similarity of both voice systems is that neither one nor the other has support for the Russian language and it all looks quite strange. We will not touch on SIRI, although we will return to it later, but let’s talk about S Voice, or more precisely the logic of Samsung Corporation.

Russian is spoken in the largest country in the world - Russia, and in addition, it is known and even spoken by many in the countries of the former USSR, which is almost 15 republics. By introducing Russian language support voice assistant, it would be possible to reach countries with populations several times larger than those whose languages S Voice supports. It may be difficult for South Korean “luminaries” to comprehend all the versatility of the “great and mighty”, much less implement it, but having a staff of specialists from Russia... but oh well.

After my disappointment from the lack of Russian language support, I was also disappointed by the availability of English. What conclusion did I draw after working with S Voice and asking it a few mundane questions? The device only clearly understands asked question on English language, and very preferably without an accent. Therefore, if you speak English, German, Spanish, French, Italian and South Korean perfectly and without an accent, then S Voice will be useful to you. If you only speak Russian or “bad” English and the same other listed languages, then this function is of no use. Although at SIRI I was more successful in speaking “my” English.

Direct call

Another feature that Samsung boasted in the S3 is Direct Call. The function involves automatic dialing of a number that is displayed on the screen when you bring the smartphone to your ear. For example, you are typing a message or reading a received message from a certain subscriber, if you immediately raise the handset to your ear, then when this function is activated, automatic dialing will occur of this subscriber. Say that this function useful - it’s not possible, since I don’t think it’s particularly necessary, and besides, for this function to work, you need to rehearse the movement that will trigger the sensor.

Smartphone operation

The operation of the smartphone itself gave me extremely positive emotions. His work can be described in one word – “fast”. The device works very quickly, without the slightest pause or hesitation. Launching games is very fast, and the same goes for the game mode itself. I was also pleased with the work with video High Quality, without any freezes. Something else I would like to point out is the sound quality, both from the speakers and headphones. A large number of phone settings options, graphics and visualization - Android has done its best in this area. It is impossible not to mention the camera, which can easily replace a home camera and video camera. We will demonstrate visual information on the operation of the phone in a video review.

Samsung Galaxy S3 vs iPhone

Surely each of you who chooses new smartphone, will want to compare it with its main competitor - the iPhone. Let's compare Samsung Galaxy S3 with existing ones popular models iPhone.

Samsung Galaxy S3 vs iPhone 4S

First of all, it is necessary to note the difference between the displays; it immediately catches your eye. The screen size in the iPhone is 3.5 inches, while the Samsung Galaxy S3 has 4.8 inches, and the most important thing is that having such a large samsung screen The Galaxy S3 boasts a screen resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels (which falls under HD parameters), compared to iPhone resolution 4s at 640x960 pixels. Already, based on this, the iPhone 4S is significantly inferior in comparison with the Samsung Galaxy S3.

If we compare the technical characteristics, the Samsung Galaxy S3 has 4 nuclear processor, with a clock frequency of 1.4 GHz, when the iPhone 4S has only 2 cores with a frequency of 1 GHz. Samsung Galaxy S3 is equipped with 1 GB of RAM, while the “Apple” counterpart has 2 times less - 512 MB.

Samsung Galaxy S3 vs iPhone 5

Now let's compare the Samsung Galaxy S3 with the iPhone 5. The latter is fifth to date iPhone model includes some improvements in technical characteristics, but, nevertheless, still loses to the Samsung Galaxy S3. The iPhone 5's screen measures 4 inches, compared to 4.8 on the S3. Permission iPhone screen 5 1136x640, S3 - 1280x720 pixels. As for the processor, the iPhone 5 has 2 cores with a frequency of 1.2 GHz each, compared to 4 cores and a 1.4 GHz clock speed in the Galaxy. In other parameters they are almost the same.

General comparison

It would be wrong to compare the Samsung Galaxy S3 and iPhone 5 solely on technical characteristics, since they have some nuances, and very significant ones.

Of course, the most significant nuance is that the iPhone does not support memory cards, which means that you are initially limited by the available built-in memory. Some may refer to the fact that they say you can use cloud applications and thereby solve the issue with the memory card, but I will still revive it. It’s one thing when all the information is stored on the phone, and another when this information is stored on a server, to access which you need access to the Internet, and not EDGE, but preferably Wi-Fi or 3G. If your Internet speed is low, then there will be no point in using cloud applications. The issue can be solved by purchasing an iPhone with 64 GB of memory, but this is several times more expensive than the Galaxy S3.

Also to Samsung advantages The Galaxy S3 has the ability to access and replace the battery. For many Internet surfers, it is worth mentioning the presence of a flash player, which is not available on the iPhone. And, of course, the price of the Samsung Galaxy S3 is lower than the current Apple product – iPhone 5, almost 4 thousand less.

The first thing that stands out in favor of the iPhone is the brand, and you can’t argue with that fact. We also cannot fail to note the convenience iOS updates, which, unfortunately, is not present in Android. The quality of the applications and the “philosophy” of iOS itself are captivating.

The final choice is yours: it’s either the branded iPhone 5 with its own “philosophy”, or the powerful and cheaper Galaxy S3.

Impressions of the Galaxy S3

To sum up the review, in principle, the gadget left me with extremely positive impressions. Among the advantages, I would like to highlight the speed of the device, the large and bright screen, the camera, as well as the overall operation of the device. Among the minuses, I’ll highlight the body, especially the plastic back cover, which, in my opinion, is very inconvenient and looks very sparse, especially for a device that claims to be the first in the field of smartphones. As for the price, after some time the price of the gadget became more or less adequate.

Answering the question, is it worth buying this smartphone model based on the “atomic” parameters of the device? It’s worth it, especially if you want to buy a Samsung device or with Android, or 2 in 1. The smartphone is perfect both as a phone and as a gadget for using Internet services.

The editors of the site have a feeling that smartphone manufacturers are completely confused in the naming of their devices. In other words, they have forgotten how to name models so that it is immediately clear what class the smartphone belongs to, when it was released and what it can do. And for this reason, it can be very difficult to figure out what is in front of you - a budget device or a middle-class device, a current model or something from the past.

Therefore, we decided to launch a series of materials in which we will tell you which models from which manufacturers are included in which series, and what it all means. Let's start with one of the market leaders - Samsung. Things aren't as bad for her as for some others, but still there are some oddities.

Samsung Galaxy Note series smartphones

With the series Galaxy Note everything is as simple as possible: at one time it includes only one current device, complete with a stylus (hence, in fact, Note - in English this word is translated as “note”). Now this is . If you want, you can find the Galaxy Note 5, and collectors should hunt for it (probably named in honor of fans who have not given up on Samsung after the whole fire story). This, if anyone doesn’t remember, is a refurbished Galaxy Note 7 with new firmware and a safe battery. Galaxy Note FE is sold only in Asia.

Samsung Galaxy Note 8

Samsung Galaxy S series smartphones

And here everything is not so complicated: there is, there is, which is a little larger and a little more serious in terms of photo capabilities. Models , and (Edge - edge; a hint of a screen curved on the sides) are still sold, but there is no confusion with them. The only point that requires clarification is the models and. These are devices with shock protection, enclosed in “off-road” housings, as indicated by the word Active (supposedly an active lifestyle). They are not officially supplied to us, so those interested will have to order these models from the USA. Perhaps it makes sense: the same Galaxy S8 Active is the only “eight” with a flat screen. Meanwhile, the Galaxy S9 Active has not yet been presented, but, most likely, it will be released sooner or later.

Samsung Galaxy S8 Active

Samsung Galaxy A series smartphones

This series includes devices of the middle and upper-middle class. They are weaker than the representatives of the Galaxy S series, but for most consumers the capabilities of the ASH are quite enough, which is why the series is popular and long-lived.

Now in Russian retail there are models, and. All of them are interesting to one degree or another, although the 2016 models, of course, cannot be called very relevant today.

When the Samsung Galaxy S10 and the rest of the family debuted, the wide-angle lens was limited to taking regular photos and videos, as well as portraits.

If you have not yet installed the update with version number XXU1ASE5, then do not rush to do so. The update brought not only security improvements and new features, but also problems that lead to the phone freezing and spontaneously rebooting.

Since the release of the family Galaxy smartphones S10 has a lot of attractive wallpapers that are designed to hide the neat hole in their screens.

It's time to compare the newly launched OnePlus 7 Pro with two top-end flagships that went on sale 2 months ago. Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus and Huawei P30 Pro have gained serious popularity so that users or potential buyers would be interested in seeing the comparison.

Samsung has just announced the Galaxy S10 Plus Olympic Games Edition. Every year Seoul residents release new version flagship specifically for the upcoming Olympic Games in Tokyo, which will be held in the summer of 2020.

In addition to such popular benchmarks as AnTuTu and Geekbench, there is one interesting test that shows the speed of artificial intelligence.

Last time we showed a speed comparison Samsung works Galaxy A50 and Galaxy S10 Plus, and today it’s time for the more expensive A70. This device has more powerful hardware than the A50, so the results can be very interesting.

After Samsung had to recall the Galaxy Note 7 due to a defective battery, the company implemented an advanced verification system. This was done to ensure that the situation never happens again.

In the morning, users of the flagship Samsung Galaxy S10 began to report receiving a new update, which, in their opinion, improves battery life. This model is equipped with a 4000 mAh battery, but many complained that it discharges even faster than last year's Galaxy S9.

We are always happy to inform our readers about a new update for their smartphones, although we wish some of them would not be released. Today's is one of those we've been looking forward to, as it brings new camera functionality to the Samsung Galaxy S10.

It turns out that by default on some Samsung models Galaxy S10 has power-saving location detection enabled. This causes navigation apps to perform poorly as they are unable to obtain accurate user geolocation data.

We don't often compare Samsung flagships, which have different processors. It's no secret that the Galaxy S10e, Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10 Plus are sold in two variants, the hardware of which varies from market to market.

Many smartphone manufacturers have equipped their products with multifunctional keyboards. One of the most interesting features is continuous text input, and in the case of Samsung, it is available on the newest models, including the Galaxy S10.

Users have repeatedly complained about the fingerprint sensor on the Samsung Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10 Plus being slow or not working at all. This is a completely new ultrasound scanner from which we expect unprecedented safety and responsiveness.

The Samsung Galaxy S10 with support for 5G networks is not yet officially on sale, but today the first video with its disassembly appeared. The device differs from other models in the family by having a larger screen with a diagonal of 6.7 inches.

Even though Samsung claimed that the ultrasonic fingerprint sensors in the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10 Plus had better accuracy and security, they were tricked by using a 3D printed fingerprint.

Less than a month ago, the South Korean flagship Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus was officially announced. Today, April 5, its price fell by 20 percent. If at the start of sales the device cost 77,000 rubles, now it will cost 60,000.

Samsung Galaxy S10 5G is the first commercial smartphone to support fifth generation networks. It went on sale today in South Korea and will officially launch in the United States on May 16th.

The Galaxy S10 family of smartphones is characterized by a hole for front camera on the screen, which causes conflicting feelings among users.

The non-profit organization Consumer Reports tested the new generation of flagships of the S10 family. She recommends buying a brand new Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus, and not any of the iPhones.

For many years, the heart rate monitor has been an integral part of flagship Samsung smartphones, however, with the advent of the Galaxy S10e, the company broke tradition and did not install this sensor in this model.

News archive

Mobile World Congress 2018 took place not long ago, where the company’s new flagship, the Galaxy S9, was presented. However, before users have time to study all the features of the new product, they are already eager to know everything about the future Samsung Galaxy S10. There are already a lot of rumors and all kinds of leaks appearing on the network, but we will try to find out what is true and what is fake.

First of all, you should pay attention to the rumor about solid-state batteries in future generation devices. According to technical parameters, such batteries have an increased energy capacity in smaller dimensions, and also do not overheat and do not explode, unlike conventional ones lithium-ion batteries. Despite all the colorful development, the introduction of such a battery in the Samsung C10 may slightly slow down the release date of the smartphone. According to the company, the developers have not yet fully studied all the nuances of the technology.

It is also known that the company intends to move away from the Galaxy S name in a different direction. On this moment, there are speculations that the new flagship will be called Galaxy X or some similar name. Obviously, this is due to the new design that the future smartphone will have.

Galaxy S10 release date

Traditionally, all Galaxy S devices will be presented at Mobile World Congress, which takes place in the first quarter. Accordingly, we should expect the future flagship no earlier than January-March next year.

Samsung Galaxy S10 will be officially launched on February 20, 2019.

DJ Koh, who is the head of the mobile division of the Korean company, said that most likely the name of the future “Galaxy” will be slightly changed. It is worth noting that the line itself will remain called Galaxy, but its one-letter name “S” will be replaced with something else.

Samsung has already made a similar decision in the case of the line budget smartphones Galaxy A, when all existing Core, Prime, Mini and other brothers were combined into one “A”. It seems that now it’s time to change the name of flagship smartphones. Let's hope that with the new name the smartphone will also get a new appearance.

Again, do not forget the possible delay in the official release of the Galaxy S10 due to the introduction and testing of a new type of battery. After all, the company certainly doesn’t want a repeat of the old incident with exploding batteries.

Specifications Samsung Galaxy S10

The exact characteristics of the Galaxy S10 are still unknown, however, there are already quite a lot of leaks and insights about the screen, processor, camera, RAM and some features. We invite you to familiarize yourself with them.

  • Screen- 4K Ultra HD Super AMOLED
  • CPU- 7nm Qualcomm Snapdragon latest generation at the time of launch of smartphone production (presumably Snapdragon 855).
  • Camera- main (18 megapixels), front (10 megapixels, dual with optical stabilization and phase detection autofocus).
  • RAM- 6 GB, memory type - LPDDR5.
  • Main memory- 64, 256 or 512 GB.
  • Battery- ~3800 mAh.
  • Networks- 2G/3G/4G/5G (600-700 MHz).

For now, that's all that is known. However, even this list is not accurate, so take everything with a grain of salt. But, having this list, it’s worth considering each item in detail, as well as some of the specifications of the future flagship.

Screen

The future smartphone will feature 4K Ultra HD Super AMOLED display, which will cover at least 93% the entire front panel of the device. In addition, Samsung continues to sow rumors about the patent flexible display, which will quite obviously be used in the Galaxy S10.

The point is that the new “Galaxy” may acquire a screen that will cover the front, one side and part of the back panel. The display itself will be made in a single form factor, which, according to the design idea, should “envelop” the smartphone. The corresponding photos are already on the Internet.

A similar idea has already been implemented in Meizu Pro 7, which has 2 displays. The second screen is designed to display notifications and the clock. In addition, the rear display of Meizu Pro 7 has found its use as a selfie mirror. However, the rear screen was separate and not integral with the front panel, but the developers' idea turned out to be very interesting. We hope that Samsung will be able to put the flexible display patent into practice, and the Samsung C10 will become a truly revolutionary and new device in every sense.

Processor, RAM, network

As befits all flagships, the future Samsung Galaxy S10 will have the highest specifications to satisfy all user needs. It is expected that the heart of the device will be the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 series, made according to 7nm process technology. Qualcomm may create this processor in collaboration with Samsung specialists.

The amount of RAM and user memory is still just a guess. Obviously, the user will be allocated about 256 GB to store applications, photos, videos and other multimedia data. Perhaps a version of the smartphone will be released with 512 GB of memory on board. It is not known exactly how much RAM the future Galaxy S10 will have. However, there are plans Samsung use chips with LPDDR5 type, which are significantly superior to the current LPDDR4.

It is also known that the Samsung Galaxy S10 will definitely support 5G networks. This network allows data transfer with a maximum latency of 1 millisecond at speeds of 15 GB/sec. It is worth noting that in Russia MTS, Megafon, Beeline and Tele2 are actively working on the 5G network. A record has already been set in which the operation of a new generation network was tested - Huawei smartphone using 5G from Megafon reached a speed of 35 GB/sec.

Note that 4G reaches maximum speed 1 GB/sec with 10 millisecond latency. Presumably, Russians will be able to enjoy the new speed no earlier than mid-2018.

Design

What can make the Samsung S10 stand out from the crowd of Chinese copies? That's right, a design that will exceed all critics' expectations. If Korean experts nevertheless call the new smartphone Galaxy X, then it should clearly surpass its direct competitor, the iPhone X.

Considering that the future device will have a curved display, which was written about earlier, we can roughly imagine the new design. It should be a monolithic block with curved side frames like the Galaxy S9; the screen occupies almost the entire front panel - at least 93%; from the front the display goes through one side frame to back panel; no buttons other than the power/lock key.

Battery

Samsung devices have no complaints when it comes to battery capacity. The battery charge is enough for a whole day of active use of the device - 4G, games, watching and shooting 4K video and long-term use of the device at maximum display brightness, which should significantly “exhaust” the smartphone.

However, recently Korean specialists have been actively working on a new, solid-state type of battery. This is evidenced by all kinds of reports, as well as news from Samsung. The developers' plans include introducing new batteries into their wearable gadgets, and then mass production of solid-state batteries for electric cars. As experts say, this will increase the charge capacity, while the dimensions of the battery will be quite compact.

For the future Galaxy S10, this is at least another couple of hours of work and minus a couple of centimeters in the thickness of the device. However, there is no exact data on this matter yet. Therefore, we can only hope for the success of the developers before the release of the smartphone.

Galaxy S10 Features

You certainly won’t be able to win top sales with just the design, screen and new processor. Therefore, the Samsung Galaxy S10 simply must have its own characteristics. Everyone knows that Samsung specialists have been working for a long time on introducing a fingerprint scanner into the device’s display. However, it has not yet been possible to achieve the desired result. According to critics, by the release of the Galaxy S10, Korean developers should finish work on an in-display fingerprint scanner.

In addition, we should also not forget that Samsung has not yet presented its analogue of the Face ID technology, which is popular with iPhone X users. The iris and face scanner, even in simultaneous tandem, does not provide the comfort of use that Apple provides . Comparing the security of Face ID and Samsung's face and iris scanner simply doesn't make sense - alas, the fruity winner is obvious.

Also, there is information that the Samsung C10 will hide speakers under its display - both conversational and stereo. This is evidenced by Samsung data, which talk about a new development by the company’s specialists. According to experts, when the right approach developers, the result should have a “wow” effect. Wherein, maximum volume the device should not be damaged. We hope that everything will be successful in the Korean laboratories.

Despite the demands of users to make the future flagship extremely frameless, the company still faces some difficulties even at the concept development stage. In particular, by abandoning the frames, the device risks being left without a place for the front camera. According to experts, to locate the selfie camera matrix, at least 3-5 millimeters must be allocated at the top of the device. Accordingly, the Galaxy S10 will not be so frameless. At least in the upper part for sure.

A solution to this problem could be a mechanical retractable front camera module. However, Korean experts cut it off at the concept stage, explaining that with such a module the risk of device breakdowns increases. In addition, introducing something mechanical into a new product while all over the world is increasingly abandoning it is absurd.

We saved the most interesting things for dessert. Perhaps the S10 will implement a revolutionary single-chip system that works in a single combination of processor, graphics module and neural network chip. Such a module will significantly speed up the operation of the entire system, as well as its overall performance and efficiency. The work of specialists on this technology is most closely followed by critics and tech bloggers.

Price of Samsung Galaxy S10 in Russia and the world

Taking into account all the development features, new components and production costs, Samsung cost Galaxy S10 in Russia should start at 56,990 rubles. For other CIS countries, it may traditionally increase slightly due to local legal peculiarities. However, it is unlikely to be higher than $1,100 in equivalent.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Anton1988 from Cool work phone. I bought the phone six months ago for the future, because... Before that I used push-button phones and only once a smartphone ( Alcatel One touch pixi). The phone was needed for new job- a lot of calls + simultaneous surfing through applications, between instant messengers during a call, sometimes in maps, all this on the go, because work does not always take place at the computer. What I liked most was the performance of the phone - sometimes several applications are included (airbnb, Sberbank online, booking, chrome, what'sup, viber), everything needs to be done quickly, the phone has never failed, it works perfectly. Among the weaknesses, it can be noted that charging in such lasts 6 hours maximum in working mode, requires portable charging. Screen and size are just right, compact, sound, video are great. For comfortable viewing, I have a laptop. And on the way, on the road, that’s enough. The quality of Samsung’s screens, I’ve heard a lot , has always been good, including on TVs. My mother liked Samsungs precisely because of this, I thought it was a whim, but after trying to use the phone in my hands, I realized that the main advantage is the speed of the phone and the quality feedback. The quality of everything else is the same, details and overall. The simplest and best working phone for those who despise excesses and pathos in phones. I will definitely only buy Samsung phones.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Ssienby from Workhorse For such a low price, it’s very pleasing that it has an Amoled screen, because it’s really very good, although the resolution for watching videos is low. By itself, it does not lag in normal tasks and holds a charge for a long time. Although my health is good, I looked at the special features for those with visual impairments or coordination problems, I would like the different functions. The only negative is the lack of NFC, but for the money it's normal.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Oleg from Best on the market for this price I’ve been using it for more than a year, I’m really glad that I bought it and not... a smart from another manufacturer, as the seller advised. I’ll say more - a couple of months ago we bought my wife the same one, to replace her smart that was broken by a cat. Excellent, stable quality, about the functionality already We’ve written a lot, there’s no point in repeating it. He has no shortcomings. The bonus is that you can buy a bunch of all sorts of accessories for it for pennies in one well-known store. Protective glasses, various cases, bumpers, etc. When buying, I thought - am I overpaying for the brand? No - smart is worth it. By the way, system updates are still coming, it’s only getting better

Rated 5 out of 5 by Alexander from An excellent smartphone for all occasions. A faithful assistant in all matters! Galaxy J1(6) is my first smartphone, the choice was not easy, because modern world in stores one’s eyes are simply dizzying from the multitude various devices! When choosing, I needed an inexpensive smartphone with support for 4G and all modern multimedia capabilities. The choice immediately fell on Samsung equipment, since I have experience using other smartphones of this brand and push-button phones that are already 7-8 years old and still work great. So there was no doubt about the reliability and quality of Galaxy smartphones. Now about the device itself. I’ve been using it for 4 months now, despite the fact that it comes with no glass films or covers since purchase, the screen coverage remains perfect, by the way, the screen is covered by glass, not plastic. Small scratches appeared only on the bottom of the back cover. The screen, despite its high resolution simply excellent, the colors are bright and rich, cannot be compared with similar models with TFT and IPS matrices. I don’t set the brightness above 20-30 at all; compared to the Galaxy S3 neo, the J1 has a brighter screen. You often hear about the appearance of screen flickering in this model, I can say with confidence that nothing like that happens to my copy, the screen does NOT flicker and looks like new. Time battery life I was also pleased, 6-7 hours of screen time and 3 days without recharging and using energy-saving functions! At the same time, during use, 4G is almost always turned on with a weak signal. Cameras for their resolution are very good quality, especially in natural light, at night, of course, the pictures become much worse, but this is true for all smartphones, especially at the budget level. The performance is really excellent, nothing slows down, everything opens quickly and smoothly. Online music and 3 open tabs Holds up well in chrome. It does not heat up, unlike most modern smartphones, or rather it does not heat up much, but the heat is dissipated over the entire area of the body and it warms up evenly, which is almost unnoticeable. Audibility during a conversation both through the earpiece and over speakerphone or headphones are excellent on both ends + there is a volume increase mode. The multimedia sound is also excellent, both through the main speaker and in headphones; when using the latter, you can use a chic equalizer and additional sound “improvers”. The memory is not enough, of course, but on the new smartphone, out of 8, there is about 4.5 GB free, which is quite enough for all the necessary applications. The case is also good, although it is plastic, it fits in the hand like a glove, the back cover is not glossy but not matte, the buttons are located in a classic, convenient location. In general, this model has a lot of advantages, it’s not for nothing that it has been sold for the second year, since the model is really very well balanced both in terms of hardware and software. For example, the maximum energy saving mode is very useful feature, when you need to “hold out” until the evening, but there is very little charge left. Among the shortcomings, we can note only a small amount of memory and glass that gets dirty quickly, although it is cleaned just as quickly, so these are minor things. Basically, J1 2016 is an excellent smartphone, for those who do not need to turn their phone into a full-fledged game console or a bitcoin mining farm, it is a well-balanced modern smartphone at a reasonable price! Everything that is stated works perfectly, does not glitch and is always ready to help its owner. In conclusion, I would like to say that, again, despite the huge number of other models and manufacturers, in 4 months I have not once regretted buying the Galaxy J1, it has something of its own that other phones do not have, it is a smartphone with a soul ! Thanks to SAMSUNG, that even in modern simple conditions she still makes high-quality things that are pleasant to hold in your hands!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by Vinter from An ideal mid-range phone. I've been using the phone for a year - my only complaints are Last update, after which the original (small) problem with the disappearance and “multiplication” of application icons, which were partially transferred to the KP, resumed (in 5.1.1, partial transfer of applications to the KP is possible). I would have continued to use it if it weren’t for the gift - a new model. On two SIM cards and a memory card 10 cells. 16 GB. No freezes or reboots were noticed. no heating. Games - minimum (chess, solitaire; instant messengers - everything; navigator, transport, taxi, e-reader, tuner, metronome, Shazam, social networks - perhaps that's all I used. The phone FULLY MEETS the stated characteristics. Advice to those who bought " a gray" phone is cheaper and is now looking for and will not find 4G or a normally working battery in it: "DON'T SAVE 3 COPIES, BUY IN BRAND SHOWS!" Yes, the memory is not enough for those who like to load 20-30 heavyweight applications. The RAM and processor are not enough for heavy toys. But for the everyday tasks of an active adult, everything you need is there. And it’s very good that there are not many unnecessary scanners, smart plugs, TV control panels, etc. In general, I can say that this is a high-quality, well-balanced and optimized, reliable device for everyday communication and solving problems for a normal person with a very nice screen. Thank you SAMSUNG!
