LUL

The article we deserve.

LUL may seem pretty obvious - it's the Twitch emote equivalent of LOL, but it has an interesting history. LUL is based on streamer and YouTuber TotalBiscuit, whose real name is John Bain. Although Bain added a "LOL" emoji for himself, it was later removed following a DMCA request from the photographer who took the photo.

Because Twitch didn't want to touch the emoji due to legal issues, Bain said he uploaded the photo to BTTV. BTTV, otherwise known as BetterTTV, is a third-party browser extension that allows people to use an emoji in chat. Since they are not launched directly through Twitch, emoticons often bypass the rules. This meant that LUL could exist as an emoji. LUL is a very popular emoticon on Twitch, despite the DMCA ban, its popularity has only grown.

How to use it: if you want to express a strong laugh.

BTTV emoticons

How to enable BTTV emoticons:

1. Check if the streamer is connected to his chat.

2. Connect the extension to your browser. Find an extension called BetterTTV for your browser. Enable the plugin and/or restart the browser.

3. Go to the stream and click on the gear under the chat, click on BetterTV Settings below

Inside the window, enable BetterTTV Emotes, BetterTTV GIF Emotes, Emote Menu

4. Restart your browser. The Emote Menu emoticon will appear under the chat, where you will see all the emoticons available for the channel.

In each chat, the streamer includes different emoticons. Some of the ones described below are most likely enabled by default, but there may be exceptions. After connecting, a separate block with additional emoticons will appear in the right side window.

OMEGALUL

OMEGALUL is LUL - it's just a version of BTTV. What’s most interesting is that there are several versions of where LUL came from. The best advice when using a LUL variation is to do a little research (OMEGALUL) before using a specific emoji. The only way to safely use an emoticon in chat is to be informed before sending a message.

Memes in general are about cultural literacy. How can you show your membership to a certain subculture? This is exactly what's happening with Twitch emotes, and some of them are really hard to understand. To participate, it is important to have a clear understanding of how these emojis work. I think we'll see more and more emoji, and more and more variations of the same emoji.

haHAA

We've finally reached the emoji limit. haHAA is based on a photograph of Andy Samberg's face from the Lonely Island music video, which aired on Saturday Night Live in 2010. “haHAA” is the text version that Samberg reproduces in this video.

The smiley was introduced in 2015, but did not gain popularity until 2016 thanks to the speedrunning community. How to use it: If something happens on stream or in game that makes you cringe, you can use haHAA. However, try not to be a complete jerk.

Peculiarities: Be extremely careful with this emoticon on foreign streams. I have seen several times when people were banned just for using this emoticon. In our case, it is not particularly offensive and is used when a “next funny” donation is voiced on a stream or the streamer makes a bad joke.

SourPls

SourPls is another old emoji that was taken from a YouTube video and turned into a BTTV emoticon in 2014. The name of the emoticon is taken from a Youtube user SourNotHardcore (Twitch employee) in which he dances in a store. He has a funny grin on his face. Since then, the smile has gone through many variations, one of the most popular being ForsenPls. The smile went through its own period of trouble (the fact that it was animated caused problems for BTTV) but has since become one of the most popular to date.

How to use it: If you want to celebrate a particularly good event on stream.

Peculiarities: The category of these emoticons can be thought of as a musical GIF. They usually spam when there is rhythmic music to the GIF on the stream. As an example from them (ditto) or PepePls.

FeelsBadMan/FeelsGoodMan

FeelsBadMan and FeelsGoodMan are two of the most popular variations of Pepe the Frog, along with EZ and PepeHands, which we'll look at below. The emoji is based on artist Matt Fourie's Pepe the Frog, a long-running comic character that was used by alt-right groups during the 2016 election cycle. Twitch.tv Basics - Emoticons and Memes.

I'll answer now so we can move on to pasterino:

= Kappa(no space)
Kappa is usually used in ironic contexts, jokes or trolling.
Professionals use them after pasterino to send a message to a chat that is in r9k mode.
R9K mode means that only unique messages that have not been used by anyone before can be sent to the chat.

Other notable emojis:

= Keepo(myspace)
+ = .
Usually used instead, when appropriate, or simply anywhere instead of Kappa. It is recommended to spam if there is one in the match.

There are also many situational spams that you should use:

S A D B O Y S- Comes from a Yung Lean track called "Kyoto" (video below)
Current EG players (Arteezy, Fear, etc.) used S A D B O Y S as their team name in early 2014.
S A D is often replaced with something else depending on the situation, but it is preferable to keep the original number of letters so that it rhymes with the music.
(for example: B A D B O Y S, R A T B O Y S, M A D B O Y S)

Twitch Basics - BetterTTV Addon

You might be wondering why my Twitch chat was so dark in the first chapter.
This happened because Twitch was improved using a browser addon called BetterTTV.
I recommend installing it if you haven't already. Install the addon by clicking and click on the large Download button if you are using Chrome, or below it if you are not using Chrome.

Once BetterTTV is installed, you will be able to see pastes that have been sent to the chat and deleted. You can also “remember” emoticons by clicking on the icon next to the chat button.

Pasterino - READ THIS OR ENJOY YOURS

Preparation and use of pasterino

I've done my best to sort the pasterinos into categories, but some pastes contain multiple players, teams, commentators, or various combinations thereof.
It is recommended to use Ctrl + F to find the paste you need.
Player names or content may vary slightly depending on the versatility of the pastes.
You are called upon to change the text in the pastes so that we have a better Twitch chat experience, and also distribute the pastes to other channels.

Please note that some pastes use bad words and Steam filters them out. Use your creativity and replace with whatever words you want! Some pastes have been slightly modified to be included in this guide.

ASCII pastes are in the Random category because they take up a lot of space.

Effective use of pasterino

I recommend using pastes when you don't get timeouts for a while (30+ seconds).
Also, if someone is using pasterino, wait a couple of seconds and see if they get a timeout. If not, then copy it pasterino and let it spread. Remember: The one who starts pasterino usually does not get a timeout if he does everything right. Look at the second image in this guide to see the flood I started.
If you get a timeout, it usually lasts 10 minutes. I advise you to keep track of the time on your computer to know exactly how much time is left, since there are usually pauses in the middle of the match.

i think Arteezy have insanely good micro and he is having huge impact on a games he playing if his teammates giving him space. Namely, by introducing the possibility of registering a paid subscription to a companion’s channel (it will be possible to “zasabitsa”), I decided in advance to come up with the style and design of badges (icons) that appear next to the subscriber’s nickname in the chat.

It is typical that you cannot limit yourself to one single icon. Well, it’s impossible... In principle, it’s possible, but you lose one of the tools for retaining your audience. After all, Twitch has been operating a loyalty system for subscribers for quite some time, which is expressed in a kind of progress in the appearance of the icon as the length of the subscription increases.

The subscriber badge changes in periods: the first month of subscription, the third month, six months, a year and two years. By default, Twitch plays on the theme of precious metals and stones. First, the subscriber receives an unsightly gray badge with a crack, and after three months he switches to bronze. In fact, he takes silver for six months, and gets gold for a year. Well, in another year, a diamond badge is offered for the two-year anniversary of the subscription.

Finding your style

This approach is too primitive and I wanted to avoid using it. All this craving for gold, silver and other luxury has always been very popular, just remember the style of iOS before version 7. I was impressed by the more interesting options for badge progress that I saw on the channels of various Twitch partners - namely progress, change, and not a change in its quality.

WeLoveGames Badges

The first thing that came to my mind at that moment was the icons on the WeLoveGames channel. Unfortunately, I’m not a fan of this streamer’s work, but I pay tribute to the graphic design that he uses for his brand. Denis plays on the logo of his channel in the style of old computer games: the initially empty heart is gradually filled with vitality, and in the 2nd year it becomes golden.

I decided not to invent a bicycle, but to take my logo as a basis, which is also distinguished by its simple geometric shapes. In fact, this is a fox, made in the most abstract style with triangles. Here is an illustration, the basis of which I drew with my finger on the phone screen in Google Keep. Due to the lack of an initial idea on how to depict the progress of the development of the badge, I myself initially slipped into the “premium” category of precious metals, and even decided to stick a heart to my future badge =)

Despite the flawed concept itself, the lack of an idea for a two-year subscription and the primitiveness of the presentation of the finger prototyping method, the option proposed above received approval from the “focus group” simply because it looked quite tolerable. The problems started at the stage of drawing the icon according to the rules set by Twitch.

The basic size of a subscriber's badge is set by the service at 18 by 18 pixels; options for icons twice and four times larger (36 and 72 pixel squares) are also requested. It would seem that what could be difficult in the process? Reduce a large logo in Photoshop so that it fits within the specified dimensions - business! But it seems so until you start drawing something pixel by pixel in a limited space.

In principle, I did not like operating in PhotoShop as part of such filigree work, and I discovered piskelapp.com - an online service for creating pixel art, including animated ones. After several days of painful attempts to draw my triangular fox, I ended up with a very lackluster result. But most importantly, I still didn’t have a concept for developing the icon.

We sat with friends, I showed them my efforts in creating badges for subscribers. There was still no concept. I showed the guys different variations of loyalty badges in Google image search. Opened the RXNexus subscription page, with its chick hatching from the egg receiving a crown and mantle. It was a typical dull morning after the previous revelry.

In general, my comrades rated my work highly; everyone liked the icon in its original resolution. Everyone except me, because there was no idea. There was just a logo in color and black and white pixel art. I said the word “integrity” several times while showing the guys the WLG and Nexus icons. And suddenly it dawned on me!

After all, my icon really lacks integrity - these scattered triangles look good in high resolution, on a VKontakte group icon or Twitch channel logo, but at a resolution of 18x18 pixels it all looks disjointed and unfinished. Then I took a “pencil”, painted it black and traced the outline. And everything came together!

Added a little volume to the dark red ones. Sasha suggested drawing the fox’s eyes. I immediately attached a crown for the two-year subscriber, and made a pale “arctic fox” version for the first-month subscriber. The idea of ​​a hat looked good in terms of getting a badge for a one-year-old subscriber, but what kind of hat should it be?

I went out onto the balcony to breathe and a minute later I realized - bandana! After all, I always broadcast in a black bandana with white hieroglyphs. I go back into the room and say:

Sasha, I came up with an idea!

And he looks at me, smiles and answers:

Me too. Bandana.

Perhaps fools think alike, but the main thing is that the concept began to take shape, and I was only missing one badge for a subscriber with 6 months of experience. Initially, I made a color version of the first badge for 3 months with the same flat eyes, and for 6 months I depicted “herringbone eyes,” but later in the evening, when the guys left, I realized that it wouldn’t work.

The icon changes from three to six months should be more noticeable than simply changing the expression of the eyes by moving two pixels up. And literally right away I thought about Deal With It glasses, and finished drawing them for my fox. The puzzle is complete.

UPD from August 2017

After I developed a new emoticon for $10 subscribers, the idea came to redesign the icon for subscribers with one year of experience. A respectable fox in a bowler hat and with a monocle seemed to me much more interesting than a punky fox in a bandana. He seems like a logical transition from the self-confident six-month-old fox. But of course, I’m not writing this all seriously. It's just that bandanas come and go, but gold monocles remain ;)

Conclusion

What is typical is that I am not a real artist, I have been working with computers all my life and have not noticed any inclination towards creative activity in myself, except that I like to sing something all the time. But in this case, I wanted to do something good and beautiful so that my future subscribers would like the icons. To want to subscribe to the channel just for the sake of such a cute icon. And now I'm looking forward to the subscription becoming available.
