Comparative review of Fujifilm X-T1 and Sony A7r. Fuji split systems - prices Technical characteristics of Fuji air conditioners

With a large aperture and moderate focal length, this is a fairly compact lens. Over five years of intensive use “both in the tail and in the mane”, this fix has not lost its working properties - it is still almost flawless, although appearance You can definitely say that you worked hard. Made in Japan pays off completely! The lens has an attractive retro design, and it looks especially cool with a metal lens hood.

I would include compactness, high aperture ratio and a unique “warm, lamp-like pattern” as advantages. Yes, it is not without features, such as a slight soft effect, sometimes even with halos, on an open aperture and a tendency to side flare, but one simply cannot raise one’s hand to classify this as a disadvantage - they are so organic and add soul to the picture! At the same time, paradoxically, the lens is sharp almost from an open aperture; the soft effect completely disappears already at f/2.

The disadvantages, perhaps, include the slow and rather noisy operation of autofocus and the too easy rotation of the aperture control ring: here this proprietary “sore” of early XF-series lenses is very noticeable.

Weight - 187 grams

FUJINON XF35mm F2 R WR

Representative of a new class of FUJINON lenses. The equivalent focal length is 52.5 mm, also, in fact, “half a lens”, like 35/1.4. Many people ask - so what, they say, what is the difference, better or worse? Not better, not worse, he's just different. Different in design, for example. Stylish and perfect for retro cameras X-Pro1/2 or X-E1/2.

The lens is available in two versions - black and silver. A little lighter and noticeably more compact, with dust and moisture protection. With a guarantee of operation at -10 degrees. Finally, with adjusted force on the 9-blade aperture control ring. Very cool!

Personally, I like the design of this lens better than the design of its “big brother”. The image is largely devoid of softness while maintaining a fair amount of “warm lamp quality” - everything is sharper, more contrasting and cleaner. At the same time, it is faster and quieter. No chromaticity, no noticeable geometric distortion. Surprisingly, the f/2 aperture is quite enough for almost all scenes in which it may be useful. A lens made with the latest technology, to put it simply.

The only downside that can be noted is noticeable vignetting at an open aperture. And even then, many people don’t consider this a minus!

Noticeable vignetting wide open

FUJINON XF56mm F1.2 R

The equivalent focal length is 84 mm, aperture is f/1.2! At the same time, it is not at all as monstrous as its full-frame counterparts. Technologically, it is quite complex - 11 optical elements, two of them are low-dispersion lenses and one is aspherical. Internal autofocus system - when focusing, the dimensions of the lens do not change. A solid lens, but it doesn’t look like a gun and doesn’t weigh down your neck with its weight.

Again, unlike full-frame analogues, 56/1.2 is sharp right from the widest aperture; at f/1.2 the picture is without a hint of software! No chromatic aberrations or distortions. The bokeh is very pleasant, and the transition between the sharpness and out-of-focus zones is smooth, without noticeable “jumps”. The foreground is gently separated from the background, leaving the image feeling seamless. The detailing is generally high, but not excessive, everything is as it should be for a portrait lens.

Perhaps the only disadvantage of this lens is the relatively slow focusing. Otherwise, this is dreamlens in its purest form, a dream lens.

FUJINON XF56mm F1.2 R APD

As far as I know, this is the only autofocus lens in the world with a built-in apodization filter. Many people mistakenly believe that this filter makes the transition between the sharp and unsharp parts of the image more noticeable. Sometimes I came across another misconception that this filter supposedly makes the blur stronger. He doesn't do anything like that, of course. The main idea of the apodization filter is to soften the boundaries of contrasting bokeh transitions.

To put it simply, imagine an ordinary evening shot with bright flashlights on the background. In the blur zone, these light bulbs will turn into the familiar multi-colored circles, which are popularly called the “bokeh effect.” These circles are round if the shape of the diaphragm is round. Or polyhedral, if the hole is shaped like a polyhedron. But in any case, these circles will have a clear edge. This happens because the diaphragm has clear boundaries. Now imagine that these boundaries of the hole in the diaphragm were taken and shaded, made translucent and soft! As a result, the circles in the bokeh will not have clear edges, but blurred ones. Most likely, these will no longer be circles, but fluffy balls. And since the entire image in the out-of-focus zone is essentially drawn by such elements, the overall feeling of bokeh will be softer, smoother and more delicate.

This is the blurring of the aperture boundaries that is achieved by the built-in apodization filter of this lens. It does this due to a slight drop in light transmission, so a lens with an APD attachment has an aperture ratio that is a third of a stop less than a regular 56/1.2. That is, a physical f/1.2 aperture with an apodization filter will correspond to an f/1.7 aperture... Not much, but noticeable.

Otherwise, it’s still the same 56/1.2, with all its many advantages and almost the only disadvantage.

Relatively small size and weight

Relatively slow focusing speed
- lower aperture ratio, relative to the usual 56/1.2
- higher price, relative to the usual 56/1.2

FUJINON XF60mm F2.4 R Macro

Another “first call” fix is a macro lens with an equivalent focal length of 90 mm and f/2.4 aperture. It, I think, can also be classified as a “spiritual lens”, where the image quality, although high, is still the beauty and interestingness of the image in the first place. It should be noted that this is not quite a macro lens, if you strictly follow the definition of the term “macro” - it gives a magnification of only 1:2, while for an honest macro you need at least 1:1. However, it is quite suitable for close-up shooting and product photography. As for portraits, by the way. The lens comes with a very stylish all-metal lens hood.

Photos are sharp and highly detailed, right from the widest aperture on. The lens does not produce any noticeable distortion. Chromatic aberrations are also not visible. The bokeh is very soft and pleasant, the picture is pleasing to the eye, as they say. Whether in portrait or product photography, this lens is strong everywhere.

Perhaps the only noticeable disadvantage is some slowness of autofocus, especially when shooting close-up: at this moment the lens greatly increases in size - the front part moves forward 20 mm, providing the necessary image magnification. Such a large stroke of the focused mechanism cannot but indicate the speed and as a result it is quite low...

FUJINON XF90mm F2 R LM WR

Another dream lens is a fast portrait telephoto lens with an equivalent focal length of 135 mm, f/2 aperture and dust and moisture protection. This prime is so far the heaviest among the entire line of fixed optics for X-mount, as far as I know. And yet it weighs noticeably less than its full-frame counterparts.

Distinctive feature The design is dust and moisture protection and guarantees operation at low temperatures. The lens has a record in its class for the minimum focusing distance - only 60 cm! For full-frame analogs, this value is at least 1.5 times greater. You can take fairly large portraits.

The lens produces a sharp image starting right from the widest aperture and, which is also very important, the image is obtained without visible distortion, vignetting and chromatic aberration, which looks incredibly cool. The fix just urges you to shoot only at the maximum open aperture all the time, fortunately latest firmware cameras now have an ultra-short shutter speed of 1/32000, which allows you to cope even with f/1.2, not to mention f/2! The bokeh is very pleasant, and not only the background, but also the foreground is beautifully blurred, which is very important for a lens of this type.

The only disadvantages, perhaps, are the large dimensions, which lead to the fact that this lens fits more or less naturally in the hands only with the X-T1 with a battery grip. With other cameras, the balance of the system is upset, in my opinion. Another disadvantage is, of course, the lack of an optical stabilizer; it would probably be very useful here. Otherwise, there’s simply nothing to complain about, magnificent glass!

Lack of optical stabilizer

About 3 years ago, when the new Fujifilm X-Pro1 system camera just appeared, I reviewed this camera and then I really liked the camera, but I did not consider the Fuji system as my main one because... There wasn't a single camera in Fujifilm's product line that you could take on a hike. Of course, you can take it, but Fuji cameras have always given the impression of a fragile antique thing, so that they were probably not even psychologically considered as cameras that can be used in difficult climatic conditions. With the release of Fujifilm X-T1, the situation has changed. Fuji now has a waterproof and dustproof camera in its lineup. It doesn’t matter that there are no optics protected from moisture and dust yet (the first lens protected from moisture and dust will appear from Fuji only in the summer), with the release of the X-T1 this system has changed qualitatively.

The Fujifilm X-T1 uses the company's second-generation X-Trans CMOS sensor. Matrix resolution 16 MP. By modern standards this is not much. Phase sensors are integrated into the matrix. Remembering the monstrously slow autofocus of the X-PRO1, I was prepared for the fact that the camera still had problems with focusing. But Fuji's autofocus pleasantly surprised me. The camera focuses much faster than the Sony A7r or A7. The camera even catches focus on low-contrast objects quickly, unlike the Sony A7r. Let me remind you that the A7r uses only contrast focusing. The A7r does not have phase sensors, but even in the Sony A7, the matrix of which also has built-in phase sensors, in my opinion, focuses more slowly.
The build quality of the case is excellent. When you pick up the X-T1, you feel the reliability of the design, which does not happen when using the A7r. Even though the A7r's body is made of magnesium alloy after the X-T1, it doesn't give the same feeling of reliability and quality. The controls in the X-T1 are also pleasing - everything is as convenient and reliable as in the X-Pro1.

The shutter speed is adjusted by a dial, which is fixed with a button on top. You won't be able to change the settings accidentally. The metering mode is also set mechanically by a dial located under the shutter speed dial.

ISO is also changed mechanically. Under the ISO dial, as you can see, there is a dial for changing shooting modes.

The aperture is changed by a dial on the lens. It does not move very easily and here it is very easy to accidentally change the aperture value, which happened to me several times. But in general, Fuji's controls are implemented very conveniently. Compared to the Sony A7r, Fuji is far ahead in terms of camera control implemented.

There is a lot of talk about the miracle matrix X-Trans CMOS. I will try to dispel some stereotypes. The matrix differs from the Bayer matrix in the pseudo-random arrangement of color pixels. If the Bayer matrix has a regular structure, which, when superimposed with another regular structure of the photographed object, can give the so-called moire, the X-Trans matrix is free from this drawback and therefore does not use a low-pass filter, which reduces the detail of the image. However, everything more cameras with a Baer matrix are also now produced without a low-frequency image and thus the advantage of the X-Trans matrix is no longer so obvious. There is a lot of talk about the fact that the X-Trans matrix has a very large dynamic range. This is wrong. I don’t have data on the second generation matrix; the X-Pro1 matrix had a dynamic range of about 9.5. Then, as already at that time, Bayer matrices had a dynamic range of 11 - 12. Now best matrices have a dynamic range of about 14. However, Fuji devices can still increase the dynamic range due to a special software and hardware function in which paired pixels are exposed differently. It should be noted that it is possible to use this technology on a conventional Bayer matrix. It consists in the fact that at the moment of taking a picture, paired pixels are exposed at different ISO values. For example, when shooting with a maximum dynamic range of 400%, some pixels will be exposed at ISO 800, and some at ISO 200. The shutter speed will be set by the device to the average value. Thus, pixels at ISO 200 will contain highlight information, while pixels at ISO 800 will retain shadow information. However, in areas of the image with bright light, pixels with ISO 800 will be overexposed and will not carry information about color and brightness, and pixels with ISO 200 will lose information in the shadows. That is, there is no miracle. By losing information about color and brightness, we expand the dynamic range. But it is unlikely that you will be able to practically see this in Fuji photographs. software interpolation allows you to restore colors and brightness very close to reality.

Photos of the Fujifilm X-T1 were taken with the standard Fujifilm 18-55 f/2.8-5 OSS zoom lens. Photos of Sony A7r with Sony 28-70 f/3.5-5.6 lens

Because LightRoom does not yet support RAW X-T1 all Fuji photos are camera JPEG. JPEGs from the Fuji camera are simply stunning and require virtually no editing. Sony photos were edited - contrast, vibration, exposure.

Let's start with Fuji photography

The photos are very similar.

This is due to the significantly higher resolution of the Sony matrix.

This is where I accidentally changed the aperture to Fuji. Therefore, there is blur in the image and the depth of field is much greater than in the Sony image

Take a look at the photo below. The full-size photo clearly shows that the overexposure at the branch cut is critical - information about the colors is lost. This photo was taken with standard dynamic range. The picture below was taken in extended range mode - 200%

As you can see, there is no overexposure here. However, not all so simple. In Fuji, you can set the high dynamic range options - Auto, 100%, 200%, 400%. However, these parameters are related to another parameter - the ISO value. If the ISO value is in Auto mode, the device itself will determine when it needs to increase the dynamic range, however, if the ISO value is set to 100, the device will no longer be able to take a photo in the extended dynamic range mode. If the maximum ISO is set to 400, then the device will only be able to take a photo in dynamic range mode of 200% maximum. And, accordingly, only if the maximum ISO is set to 800 or more will the device have access to all extended range modes.
Without taking this into account, you can get critical overexposures in the pictures, which will no longer be possible to pull out because The dynamic range of the Fuji matrix is very mediocre and most likely has not changed compared to the first generation matrix and is, as before, 9.5. It should be noted that the dynamic range of the Sony matrix is 14 units. This is just a huge difference compared to Fuji. During the entire filming period, I did not experience any critical overexposure in Sony photographs, except for cases where no matrix could cope. When shooting with a Sony camera, there is no need to take into account any parameters that affect the dynamic range and monitor overexposure.

But here the difference in the pictures is clearly visible - JPEG Fuji is very good. Even though I edited the Sony photo, the Fuji's internal JPEG turned out better than my edited photo. The camera makes the colors in the photo more vibrant and saturated, but does so selectively. Pay attention to the water - the color saturation in the images is the same, but the color of the grass and trees is brighter in the Fuji image. Very good result.

Once again the Fuji shot turned out better. Probably the most significant difference in the color rendering of the cameras is the color of the sky. In the Sony picture it is closer to reality, but in the Fuji picture it is more harmonious in terms of the composition of the picture as a whole.

Below are pictures taken with a focal length of 55 and different shutter speeds. As you can see, the sharpness is good everywhere. Both at long shutter speeds and at short shutter speeds. There is no grease.

Same for Sony. Here the focal length is already 70.

In fact, this is not a very correct experiment. Blurring can also be obtained on a Fuji sensor, but I can say for sure that at high shutter speeds up to 1/2F blurring is always present when shooting handheld.

I enjoyed shooting Fuji. The device is very nice. Color rendition is harmonious and without any peculiarities. The JPEGs out of the camera are amazing. But still, with a little effort, you can get a more interesting picture in the editor.
The cameras give very similar results and it is very difficult to say unequivocally which one is better for everyday shooting. Despite the obvious advantage of the Sony Fuji matrix parameters, it has its advantages. For a non-advanced photographer, shooting Fuji will be much easier. And for many advanced photographers, Fuji is quite sufficient for most tasks with its excellent color rendition and excellent JPEG straight from the camera. If you still want more, you can edit JPEG directly. Fuji has already done everything for you - brightened the shadows, removed highlights - all you have to do is raise the contrast, add or reduce color saturation, adjust the exposure, etc.
Another advantage of Fuji is the presence of a fairly large fleet of excellent optics, which Sony lacks.

I think for most Fuji amateur photographers it will be best choice. But if you want more and are willing to spend more time shooting and processing photos, you know what you can get from a larger matrix, then Sony is your choice. Both devices are simply wonderful.

Below is a comparative table of device parameters for different shooting conditions
