Technical characteristics of Lumiya 925. The operating system is the system software that manages and coordinates the operation of the hardware components in the device

Nokia line phones are popular and respected in Russia. This is due to their stylish, attractive design and high build quality. These devices are also characterized by decent performance, speed, and stability. To what extent are these symptoms characteristic of the 925 device?

Design and appearance

The device body is made of aluminum, the back cover is made of polycarbonate. The dimensions of the device are 70.6x129x8.5 mm, it is one of the thinnest in the Lumia series. It also weighs a little - 139 g. There are three touch buttons on the front panel, next to them is a hole for a microphone. Above - voice speaker, an additional camera, motion and light sensors, as well as an indicator that displays notifications. There are no functional elements on the left and bottom of the case: they are grouped on the right side of the case. Above all is the volume control key, below is the power button, below it is the camera switch. On the top of the case there is an audio jack, a slot for connecting a microUSB cable, and a slot for a SIM card. In the back is the main camera with a flash, below is a speaker used in hands-free mode.

What does the device look like? His photo is below.

As we can see, the device is a rather stylish specimen that will be appreciated by many lovers of mobile electronics.

Design and appearance: reviews

What do users say about the design and phone? Mobile electronics enthusiasts generally respond positively to the concept proposed by the Finnish brand. According to the owners of the device, the phone body is ergonomic, easy to use, and the controls on it are conveniently located. The build quality of the phone is also rated positively by gadget lovers.

Display

The next aspect in which we can examine the Lumiya 925 phone is the display characteristics. The device is equipped with a 4.5-inch screen with a resolution of 1280 by 768 pixels. The display operates based on AMOLED technology. Density indicator - 331 dpi. The display is protected by durable glass 2, there is

Display: reviews

What are users' opinions on the Lumia 925 display? The characteristics of this component of the device are assessed by the owners of the device as being quite consistent with modern technological trends, especially in terms of the use of an AMOLED matrix. Users note the high brightness and contrast of the screen. Many people like the fact that, if necessary, they can adjust the display color settings to suit individual preferences. Users praise the display for its viewing comfort at all viewing angles.

Software

The next significant aspect of the Lumiya 925 is the software characteristics. The phone is controlled by the operating system Windows Phone in version 8. Of course, in terms of the number of applications and games, this OS is still inferior to iOS and Android. But those that are available in the Microsoft store work on the phone without problems. Downloading applications and games, as well as their installation, is carried out quickly (if there is an appropriate Internet channel). The phone has a number of notable applications that are installed by default. Among these is a program for working with a camera, Nokia Smart Cam. With it you can take pictures and then process them.

There is a convenient set of navigation programs known under the HERE brand - Maps, Drive and Transit. These three applications can work with the same set of cards, and they can also function offline - if the necessary data is already downloaded to the phone. Using these programs, you can view information on traffic jams, bus movements, search for the desired addresses, or, for example, plot routes.

Many users note the usefulness of the built-in application for purchasing and playing music tracks. You can also download the corresponding songs to your phone. The program has the function of selecting music files for specific styles or years that are defined by the user.

Software: reviews

How do lovers of mobile electronics evaluate software installed on " Nokia Lumia 925"? The characteristics of the phone in this aspect are assessed positively in terms of the quality of the software. Of course, many users lack the variety of games and applications that is observed when working with Android and iOS devices. There are, however, lovers of mobile electronics who value total phone speed Windows control Phone. Even with modest technical characteristics On devices, this OS usually uses less hardware resources than the Android or iOS platforms. As a result, the device runs faster, making it possible to easily run games and applications that phones with similar resources running competing platforms might not be able to handle. However, we can talk about the specifics of the hardware separately. What resources does the phone have in this regard?

Iron

Having examined the specifics of the software, we will thus study another important aspect of the Nokia Lumia 925 - technical characteristics in terms of hardware. The phone is equipped with a Snapdragon S4 processor operating at a frequency of 1.5 GHz. There is an Adreno 225 video processing module. The amount of RAM installed in the device is 1 GB. Resource internal memory- 16 GB. However, it is not possible to install additional modules. But the marked 16 GB should be enough for a user who is not too keen on installing “heavy” applications and games, as well as shooting long videos.

Iron: reviews

We noted above that for many Nokia Lumia 925 users, technical characteristics are secondary - due to the fact that the overall performance of a phone running Windows Phone will be quite high one way or another. Indeed, the practice of using the device, as noted by many users and specialists in the field of mobile electronics, shows that even fairly “heavy” 3D games and functional applications work very well on the phone.

True, the total number of relevant products adapted for Windows Phone is still inferior to that for Android and iOS platforms.

Sound

Sound components in the phone - High Quality. This results in excellent speaker volume. Users and experts positively evaluate the quality of music playback, both using headphones and when listening to melodies through a speaker. It can be noted that the phone is equipped with a built-in equalizer. It also supports Dolby Mobile technology, which significantly improves sound quality. Users note that the headphones included with the device are quite suitable for comfortable listening to music.

Camera

Next up is now another important aspect of the Nokia Lumia 925 phone - the camera characteristics. What noteworthy facts can be noted regarding this hardware component of the device? First of all, this is a fairly large resolution of the main camera - 8.7 megapixels. The front one has a more modest figure - 1.7 megapixels, but compared to the corresponding components of competing devices it is impressive. The additional camera can take photos with a resolution of 1280 by 720 or 1280 by 960 pixels, and also shoot videos with a resolution of 720 pixels. The main camera is equipped with an image stabilization system. This determines very high clarity of photographs. Using the main camera you can also shoot video, and with a fairly high resolution - 1080 pixels.

Using the button located on the right side of the device, you can launch the built-in application that controls the camera. It is noteworthy that the corresponding control works even if the screen is locked. In shooting mode, this same button can also be used to release the shutter. Thus, the characteristics of the Nokia Lumia 925 camera look quite competitive. Photos from the device should be of quite high quality. Video is the same.

Camera: reviews

But how do users comment on the quality of the camera, how do they compare it with other characteristics inherent in the components of the Lumiya 925? Reviews from fans of mobile electronics regarding the functioning of the device element in question are enthusiastic. The high resolution of the main camera and the not at all modest one of the additional one, the presence of an optical stabilizer and a good program for working with photos and videos - all this determines extremely positive ratings from users. They celebrate a large number of useful functions with the built-in application - such as, for example, selecting the optimal shooting mode. Users rate the quality of photographs as high when shooting at any time of the day.

Communications

Let us now consider the technical characteristics of Lumiya 925 in terms of communication resources. The phone supports the main modern communication standards, including 4G, GPS, Glonass, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth in version 3. There is support for contactless payment technology - NFC. All relevant modules, as noted by users and experts in reviews, work perfectly. Navigation is carried out without any particular difficulties. As some experts in the field of mobile electronics note, the model in question is positioned by the brand as adapted specifically for those people who often need to use satellite navigation resources.

Battery

Another important aspect of the Nokia Lumiya 925 is the battery characteristics. What notable features of the corresponding hardware component of the device can be noted? The phone's capacity is 2 thousand mAh. This figure may seem quite modest. But this is quite acceptable, in particular due to the fact that the phone has a fairly low level of power consumption.

How long can a Nokia Lumia 925 phone work without recharging? The characteristics of its battery are quite modest, many users are sure, but in practice it turns out that the device shows quite decent results in terms of battery life. Thus, mobile electronics enthusiasts who tested the device found that it lasts for about a day and a half with fairly intensive use (talking, playing games, communicating on social networks, listening to music). With continuous viewing of video resources, the battery lasts approximately 6.5 hours. However, we can note that it charges quite quickly - within 1.5 hours to full level.

Summary

So, we have studied the main technological features of the Nokia Lumia 925 phone (characteristics), reviews about it. What conclusions can we draw based on the information available? It should be noted that the quality of manufacturing materials, as well as the elegance of the device’s design, are characteristic of any device in the Lumia series. For many users, this is more important than the technical parameters of the device. As for the latter, the phone is equipped with hardware that is completely in line with modern trends. Which, considering that the device is controlled by Windows Phone, provides quite decent performance. Thus, the Lumiya 925 phone is a completely modern, competitive, stylish and functional device that can become popular and in demand on the Russian market.

Less than a year has passed since the presentation Nokia Lumia 920, how the company decided to update its top device for the Windows Phone 8 platform. Considering the latter’s small market share, the manufacturer could actually choose any date to announce the Nokia Lumia 925, since there is no competition with other platforms, and there is stagnation within WP8 itself . Since the end of last year, when several companies finally supported Microsoft, some activity in this market segment is visible only from the Finnish manufacturer.

The previous flagship looked controversial compared to other solutions in terms of formal technical characteristics, which were almost completely repeated in the new product - two processor cores with a frequency of 1.5 GHz, 1 GB of RAM and 32 GB (16 GB in Lumia 925) of non-expandable flash memory, 4. It combined a 5″ screen with a resolution of 1280×768 with dual-band Wi-Fi, NFC, 4G/LTE and wireless charging (only with an additional case for the Lumia 925). To be fair, it is worth noting that this Qualcomm platform is quite enough to ensure comfortable use of a smartphone on this operating system. So, perhaps, the most noticeable complaints about the model itself were its large thickness and weight, and not its technical characteristics (except for the lack of a slot for memory cards).

So, given the features of the platform, the new product cannot boast of any special improvements in terms of hardware. Only the installation of a new rear camera module has been announced. And the manufacturer focused its main efforts on changing the body and appearance. Let's see how justified this decision was.

Characteristics

As we said above, the Nokia Lumia 925 uses the same Qualcomm SoC as its predecessor, as well as models from HTC and Samsung on the same platform. Its performance is quite enough to implement all the functions of the Windows Phone 8 operating system. The truth may be that there are simply not very many demanding applications for this platform yet. In any case, the visual smoothness of the interface is excellent and does not cause any complaints. The graphics module is represented by Adreno 225, but due to the small number of 3D applications it is difficult to assess its sufficiency, but it copes well with HD video. The situation is similar with volume. random access memory- 1 GB is enough today, but it is difficult to predict the development of the platform.

But what is clearly a step back is the reduction in the amount of flash memory - only a modification with 16 GB will be sold on our market, and a slot for memory cards has not appeared. A completely incomprehensible decision, considering that the same Lumia 720 uses it perfectly. And even 7 GB of space in SkyDrive cloud storage will not save the situation. On the new device, the user will have about 12.4 GB available to store their data. They can be accessed when connected to a PC via USB; in this case, work is carried out using the MTP protocol. This is, perhaps, the first device where we encountered during tests with limitations on the amount of built-in memory - after installing and configuring programs, recording all test videos, there was practically no space left for video shooting and photography.

They also decided to change the screen a little - instead of IPS, an AMOLED matrix is installed here. The size and resolution have not changed - 4.5″ and 1280×768, respectively, which gives the same 332 ppi. Note that ClearBlack technology has been retained for a more contrasting image in bright light and the increased sensitivity of the capacitive sensor, which allows you to use the device with thin gloves or using various improvised objects. The sensor recognizes up to 10 simultaneous touches. Corning Gorilla Glass 2 is installed to protect against damage.

The smartphone is capable of operating in modern cellular networks of 2G, 3G and 4G standards. In the latter case, there is compatibility with the domestic provider Megafon thanks to support for Band 7 (FDD, 2.6 GHz). From the point of view of others wireless interfaces, the device corresponds to the top segment - it has GPS and Glonass receivers, Wi-Fi 802.11a/b/g/n in two bands, Bluetooth 4.0 and even NFC. The appearance of FM radio can hardly be considered a significant advantage in this category. Although perhaps it will be useful to someone.

A Micro-USB port is traditionally used to connect to a PC and charge. Note that the reduction in body thickness compared to the Lumia 920 was achieved, among other things, by eliminating the built-in unit wireless charging. To implement this function, the user will have to purchase an additional cover for the rear panel.

The main camera matrix has 8.7 megapixels, autofocus support, dual LED backlight, PureView technology and a slightly improved lens system. Video shooting is possible in resolutions up to Full HD inclusive. The additional camera has 1.2 megapixels and is capable of recording 720p videos.

The battery in the device is non-removable and has a capacity of 2000 mAh. This is a relatively small value, but is common among high-end Windows Phone 8 devices. Real time We will check the work in the appropriate section.

For comparison, the table shows the characteristics of top models from Nokia and other manufacturers on this platform.

As we can see, there are few differences from its predecessor - a different type of matrix, a smaller amount of flash memory and significantly reduced thickness and weight. If we talk about other manufacturers, then Nokia Lumia 925 probably does not deserve the title of technological leader. Its only noticeable advantage is support for 4G/LTE networks. However, among these models it is, in principle, difficult or even impossible to put someone at the top, especially if you remember about the top devices on the Android platform. So the Nokia Lumia 925 attracts attention more for its novelty than for its outstanding characteristics.

Equipment

The smartphone comes in a familiar medium-sized cardboard box, decorated in blue tones.

There is nothing new or unusual in the package - a smartphone, a tool for opening the SIM card tray, a quick guide, a power supply (model AC-50E, USB output, 5 V 1.3 A), USB-Micro-USB cable, headset with microphone (model WH-208, black, there are several options for earbud sizes).

Appearance and ease of use

The main external difference of the newcomer is the use of a different housing option. The external dimensions of the case decreased by literally a few millimeters - from 130x71x11 to 128x69x9-10 mm, but this was enough to significantly change the impression of the device. If the Lumia 920 seemed clearly too thick, then the new product is already quite comparable with solutions from competitors on other platforms. But the weight has undergone an even greater change, having been reduced by almost a quarter - to 140 g. So, as a result, the smartphone may be of interest to a wide range of users, for whom appearance and ease of use are among the most significant characteristics.

From monolithic polycarbonate options, the company moved to a hybrid version, consisting of an aluminum frame and a non-removable plastic cover insert. It's a pity that with this change, the bright colors that clearly attracted the attention of users and could be considered a signature feature of the Lumia line were lost. Now you can only choose from black, gray and white. The color changes only on the back cover, the frame tries to be consistent - it is silver in the white and gray versions and dark in the black version. The rest of the body is the same, including the black background on the front panel around the screen. Some variety can be realized with wireless charging covers, which may additionally have red and yellow colors.

The shape of the smartphone body resembles the 720 model with its rounded edges. The main metal part of the case has a matte silver surface. Thanks to it, the phone lies quite comfortably and firmly in the hand. All buttons of the device are on the right side. They are made of similar metal, but the texture differs slightly from the body.

Their shape is good, the level of force applied is optimal, so it’s convenient to use and difficult to press accidentally. In terms of location, the situation is as follows - there are no problems with adjusting the volume, the lock button is perhaps too low, calling the camera will usually be used when holding the smartphone with both hands, and for this option the place is good. The issue with the lock button is partially offset by the ability to unlock the device double tap screen.

The left and bottom ends of the smartphone do not carry any additional load. The main microphone hole is located between the glass and the frame at the bottom left.

So only the top edge remains for the SIM card compartment, Micro-USB connectors and headset. It also has a hole for a second microphone. To open the Micro-SIM SIM card slot, use the supplied key or you can use other available tools. The tray only has a metal outer part, and the base is made of plastic, which is not very good from the point of view of reliability and appearance - the cracks (albeit very thin) and different surface textures are clearly visible. When compared with the products of the first company that implemented such a solution, the device clearly loses.

The USB connector pleases with its metal casing, but the plug (both the supplied one and others that we tried) does not fit completely into it. This, of course, does not affect performance, but it is a little sloppy.

Inside the standard 3.5 mm hole for connecting a headset, a strange, slightly protruding black plastic insert is visible. So we can’t resist making another comparison with the products of the “fruit company”, which is clearly not in Nokia’s favor.

The front panel is similar to other Lumia series devices and is closed protective glass with beveled edges. Around screen goes black frame. The side margins turned out to be approximately 3 mm. The top one is relatively small - about 10 mm; it houses the speaker slot, the front camera and proximity and light sensors. At the bottom (about 15 mm wide) there are three standard touch buttons for Windows Phone 8. Their white backlight works simultaneously with the smartphone screen. Interestingly, the central button is apparently capable of performing other functions, but we were only able to notice its blinking when charging the device when it was turned off.

The plastic insert at the back looks, in our opinion, like a foreign body. Gaps and uneven fit are visible to the naked eye. It’s at least strange to see this on a flagship, especially since this cover is not removable. The material itself is quite good - gray matte plastic looks good, does not attract fingerprints very much and is pleasant to the touch. In the upper half of the rear panel there is a dual LED flash, below it is the main camera lens. It protrudes from the body by about one millimeter, and there is a small edge that protects from scratches when placing the device on a table with the screen facing up.

At the bottom you can see the contacts of a special case for wireless charging and the speaker grille. Special protrusions on it make it possible to prevent sound blocking if the phone is lying with the speaker facing down.

Despite big number comments, the new model looks attractive, fits comfortably in the hand and is quite easy to control. It can be called a completely successful evolutionary development of the Lumia 920. Moreover, in practical use you will usually be dealing with a bright screen rather than looking at the body.

To illustrate the internal structure of the device, we decided to show the image offered by the manufacturer.

As you can see, the electronic components themselves do not take up much space. But the main camera received special attention.

Screen

The Nokia Lumia 925 has retained the diagonal and screen resolution - they, like its predecessor, are 4.5″ and WXGA (1280×768), respectively. But the company decided to change the type of matrix - instead of IPS, the new product uses AMOLED. However, this had virtually no effect on the first impression of the screen - bright and rich colors, deep blacks, excellent contrast and excellent viewing angles. Of course against the backdrop of 5″ Full HD available for Android platforms, this option may not be very interesting, but not everyone needs large screens. This model also features ClearBlack technology, which significantly improves usability in bright ambient light.

Another interesting feature is the time display when the device is locked. Despite the low brightness of this image, thanks to the "very black" black background, the clock is very clearly visible. Unfortunately, there is no indication of another useful information, such as missed calls or received messages.

Like its predecessor, the sensor recognizes 10 simultaneous touches, although a smaller number would be enough for a screen of such a diagonal. The ability to work with the phone with thin gloves or improvised objects as a stylus has also been preserved.

A detailed examination using measuring instruments was carried out by the editor of the “Monitors” and “Projectors and TV” sections, Alexey Kudryavtsev.

The front surface of the screen is covered with a glass plate with a mirror-smooth surface that is scratch-resistant. Judging by the reflection of objects, there is an anti-glare filter, the effectiveness of which is even higher than that of the Samsung Galaxy S4. There is no visible ghosting of reflected objects, which indicates the absence of an air gap between the outer glass and the surface of the matrix. On the outer surface of the screen there is a special oleophobic (grease-repellent) coating (in in this case slightly less effective than Samsung Galaxy S4, but still very effective), so fingerprints are removed much more easily and appear at a lower speed than with regular glass.

When manually controlling the brightness (three fixed levels are available) and when displaying the white field in full screen, it maximum value was about 280 cd/m², average - 140, minimum - 72 cd/m².

When displaying a black-and-white field with white and black in half the screen, the white brightness values are as follows: 320, 150 and 75 cd/m². That is, in this case, the smaller the white area on the screen, the lighter it is. At the same time, despite the not the highest brightness value, on a sunny day outdoors, screen readability remains at a high level. Note that in the screen settings there is a checkbox that turns on a special mode for increasing readability in the sun, but we did not find any visible or detectable effect from turning on this mode. However, this does not mean that there is no effect at all. The minimum brightness value is quite high, which may force you to use dark or inverted themes in reading programs for reading the screen in complete darkness, or enable automatic brightness adjustment based on the light sensor (it is located to the right of front camera). IN automatic mode When external lighting conditions change, the screen brightness both increases and decreases. You can make adjustments to the operation of this function by first selecting the brightness level. Next, for three conditions, we present the screen brightness values (when the white field is displayed in full screen) for three values of the selected brightness (for low, medium and high levels). In complete darkness, in automatic mode, the brightness is reduced to 6, 12 and 13.5 cd/m², respectively; in an office illuminated by artificial light, the brightness is set to 136, 188 and 235 cd/m², in a brightly lit environment (corresponding to daytime lighting outdoors, but without direct sunlight) - increases to 277, 313 and 316 cd/m². In principle, the result of this function is as expected. When brightness decreases, modulation appears at a frequency of 240 Hz. The figure below shows brightness (vertical axis) versus time (horizontal axis) for three brightness settings:

It can be seen that at maximum and medium brightness there is virtually no modulation, but at minimum brightness the relative amplitude of the modulation is high, so flickering of the image can be seen in a test for the presence of a stroboscopic effect or simply with rapid eye movement. Depending on individual sensitivity, this flickering may cause increased fatigue.

This smartphone uses an AMOLED matrix - an active matrix based on organic light-emitting diodes. A full-color image is created using subpixels of three colors - red (R), green (G) and blue (B), but there are twice as many green subpixels, which can be referred to as RGBG. This is confirmed by a fragment of a microphotograph:

In this square you can count 4 green subpixels, 2 blue and 2 red subpixels. For such matrices, Samsung introduced the name PenTile RGBG. At the same time, the location and shape of the subpixels in this version does not differ from the PenTile RGBG options implemented in the screens of Samsung Galaxy S3, Samsung ATIV S, Motorola XT925, etc., but in the Samsung Galaxy S4 the option is different. Note that luminance is primarily determined by the green component, so luminance clarity actually corresponds to the density of the green subpixels. The fact that color clarity is lower (because the density of red and blue subpixels is lower) does not actually affect image quality, since the color clarity of human vision is also lower than luminance clarity. However, this does not mean that the image on such a screen looks exactly the same as on a screen with the same resolution, but with the same number of subpixels of different colors.

The screen is characterized by good viewing angles, although white color, when deviated at relatively large angles, acquires a noticeable blue-green tint, but black color is simply black at any angle (although reflection from black areas has a color tint at some angles). So black that the contrast parameter is simply not applicable in this case. When viewed perpendicularly, the uniformity of the white field is excellent. Switching the state of the matrix elements is actually instantaneous, but at the turn-on edge there may be a step 16.7 ms wide (corresponding to a screen refresh rate of 60 Hz). Below is a graph of brightness (vertical axis) versus time (horizontal axis), obtained when moving from black to dark gray and back again at an average brightness value:

In some conditions, the presence of such a step can lead to trails trailing moving objects, but in normal use it is almost impossible to see these artifacts (we did not see them on the Nokia Lumia 925). For example, in the case of the Samsung Galaxy S4, which has the same pixel switching pattern, the trail can be seen when a dark gray object moves on a black background and only when the brightness control is turned to minimum.

The gamma curve constructed using 32 points did not reveal any blockage in either the highlights or the shadows, and the index of the approximating power function is 1.96, which is slightly lower than the standard value of 2.2, while the real gamma curve does not deviate much from the power dependence:

Note that due to the dynamic adjustment of the backlight brightness in accordance with the nature of the displayed image (on average bright images, the brightness decreases), the resulting dependence of brightness on hue (gamma curve) may not correspond to the gamma curve of a static image, since the measurements were carried out with sequential displaying shades of gray on the entire screen.

IN this smartphone The user can adjust color saturation and color temperature:

When selecting the middle position on the scale Color saturation(default setting) color gamut wider than sRGB:

In the far right position of the slider, the coverage is even wider:

And only in the extreme left position does the coverage correspond to sRGB and the colors on the screen acquire natural saturation:

From the spectra one can see how, as color saturation decreases, the degree of cross-mixing of color components increases. Spectrum corresponding to the most saturated colors:

Spectrum corresponding to sRGB coverage:

The color temperature balance is excellent: shades of gray have a color temperature of approximately 6500 K, which varies little over the entire significant part of the gray scale (the range close to black can be ignored, since color rendering in it is not so important, and the error in measuring color characteristics is high) :

The deviation from the blackbody spectrum (delta E) is less than 10, which is considered a good indicator for a non-professional device:

Also, the two graphs above show the values obtained in the white and gray fields at extreme settings Colorful temperature. It can be seen that the changes correspond to those specified in the settings: in position Warm shades- warmer, color temperature lower, and in position Cool shades- colder and color temperature higher.

An effective anti-glare filter and oleophobic coating, good readability in any conditions, excellent color rendition - all these are signs of a top-class screen.

Sound

The external speaker works through a fairly large grille at the bottom of the rear panel, although only the left half of it actually works. There are two protrusions near it that help ensure operation when placed on a table with the screen facing up. Maximum volume The speaker performance is not very large for such a large device. Moreover, setting a high level can lead to distortion and extraneous sounds when listening to music. But if you do not exceed 2/3 levels, then frequency range will be transmitted well.

The earpiece has a high volume level, but in some test calls it sounded a bit muffled. Let us remind you that the quality of a voice call via cellular networks depends significantly on the operator and load.

In Skype or other similar programs the situation is better; there are no comments regarding the transmission of voice to them. Let us just note that in video call mode, sound is recorded from the second microphone, as when recording videos. In any mode, the sensitivity of the microphones when working in this utility is at a high level and they are able to transmit voice well even at a significant distance from the user. The only criticism is the lack of noise reduction technology using a second microphone.

Under normal conditions telephone conversation The main microphone is used, but its sensitivity is noticeably reduced, so that external noise hardly interferes. If you switch your smartphone to speakerphone, the additional microphone will work, and in this case we do not recommend using this mode in a noisy environment (of course, if the goal is not to transmit this noise), since the voice may get lost.

The complete headset performed well in all operating modes. Thanks to its design, it transmits low frequencies well and isolates the user from external noise. There are also no comments regarding voice recording with the built-in microphone.

As for alternative options, the HTC version worked with a microphone, start/pause (accept/hang-up) buttons, and instead of navigating through tracks, the volume was adjusted. Apple's headset is less fortunate - you can only use headphones and a microphone, but not buttons.

The vibration alert works very “delicately” and will be useful more for a “meeting” scenario than when the device is in a bag or deep pocket.

Camera

In terms of formal characteristics, the smartphone's cameras have not changed compared to its predecessor: the main one has a formal 8.7 megapixel (frame resolution 3552 × 2000 or 3264 × 2448, which corresponds to 7.1 and 8 megapixels), autofocus, flash and 1080p video recording, and an additional one – 1.2 MP photo (1280×720 or 1280×960) and 720p video. We note the presence of a separate hardware button for calling the “Camera” application (including from a locked state) and shooting.

The standard photo and video recording program in Windows Phone 8 is relatively simple. On the main screen there are icons for selecting the camera (main or front), switching photo-video mode, and controlling the flash. In the photo settings, you can select the scene (mode), ISO, exposure compensation, white balance, frame format (16:9 or 4:3).

For video, there is only setting the white balance, disabling autofocus and selecting the video format - 720p (this option is used by default) or 1080p. The front camera has fewer shooting modes, a maximum ISO of 800, and only records video in 720p.

Below are examples of images from the main camera taken in various conditions.

Macro worked well. The pictures can be called pleasant, but in some places they still lack clarity.
The sharpness is not bad, but the outlines of objects are somehow strangely blurred, as if the camera was slightly “grainy”, like film.
Overall, sharpness is fairly uniform across the entire field, with the exception of the right edge.
The edges of objects look sharp on one side, but appear slightly blurred on the other.
Sometimes something completely indecent happens with the sharpness on the right edge of the frame. The exposition is well chosen.
The license plates of the cars are barely visible at some distance. Noise also plays a part here.
In terms of exposure and dynamic range, the camera sometimes produces interesting results.
Shooting indoors with and without flash (right).
One of the few photos with a high sensitivity of ISO 100, but noise does not spoil it too much. The flash works well, although it does not allow you to reduce the shutter speed.
The camera does a fairly good job of capturing text.
Shooting at night in the city.
For such conditions and parameters (1/4s, ISO 1000; 1/14s, ISO 800) the pictures are very decent.
Shooting at night with and without flash (right).
The flash performs its task well, but even without it the result obtained is not meaningless.

Some camera shots resemble film photographs taken on some Zenit-EM, either with a similar color scheme or soft rendering. This, of course, is pleasant, but still not for everyone.
The sharpness of the images is generally quite good, but not all details are clearly visible enough, which does not allow the camera to be classified as a documentary camera. However, the camera copes well with shooting text. And yet, a certain shooting style, insufficient detail, good (and sometimes even very interesting) choice of exposure, and other camera skills allow us to classify it as artistic. It feels like the low-light work is also aimed at artistic photography rather than documentary.

Based on the test results, we can say that the camera of the model in question allows you to take high-quality pictures not only in bright light, but also in more difficult conditions. Images have acceptable detail across the entire frame field, low noise levels and few compression artifacts. On the other hand, modern smartphones have better cameras. In any case, the Nokia Lumia 925 user will not be ashamed to show the received pictures on big screen PC or laptop.

Windows Phone 8 allows you to use additional applications to expand the capabilities of photo and video shooting, the catalog of which is called from the main program. Nokia has added three utilities to it. One of them is used for shooting panoramas and allows you to get enough photos high resolution by stitching together several separate images, but the movement of the device is only possible in landscape orientation, in one direction, exclusively according to the control points established by it, without the possibility of correction during shooting. The example can be downloaded from the link (5.7 MB). "Nokia Photos Alive" allows you to create special animated files from multiple photos.

This time we took a closer look at the Nokia Smart Cam program. It allows you to implement several quite interesting and useful effects. When you press the shutter button, the device takes a series of ten frames in about three seconds and writes them into one file, which is a ZIP archive of JPEG photos, and one of the pictures is recorded in a standard form for display in the gallery. After that (or maybe later), you can change it and transform it into “regular” pictures using various technologies and algorithms. The following options are available:

  • Best shot - select one of the frames;
  • Shooting in motion - several frames are superimposed to demonstrate dynamics;
  • Focus on motion - a moving object is selected and the background is blurred;
  • Change faces - can be collected good shot from several in the photograph of a group of people;
  • Remove moving objects - the background remains, and moving objects can be selectively removed.

After processing, the resulting image is saved in the photo catalog. Note that this process often takes several seconds and the result may have reduced resolution.

But understanding the logic of how the utility works was not easy. The decision to overwrite a JPEG image when creating a new effect seemed very strange. Considering that file manager no, it is not possible to backup or rename the previous version. The solution is to record it on SkyDrive, but to do this you will have to exit Smart Cam and use the standard gallery, since the first one does not have the ability to use this cloud storage. True, perhaps this situation is relevant only for testing, when, to illustrate the operation of the system, you want to get several effects from one initial series. In real shooting this is rarely needed. Examples of using Nokia Smart Cam are given below.

Video recording format - MP4, frame rate - about 30, AVC is used for 1080p [email protected] 20 Mbps, for 720p - AVC [email protected] 10 Mbit/s, sound - mono AAC LC 96 Kbit/s (from an additional microphone on the top end of the device). Examples of video recordings can be downloaded from the following links: scene 1, 1080p, 72.3 MB, scene 1, 720p, 38.3 MB, scene 2, 1080p, 24.6 MB, scene 2, 720p, 13 MB. In general, the video quality can be assessed as good. The detail is not bad, fps is quite stable. Depending on the scene, disabling autofocus in movie mode may be useful. When using Skype, the internal camera provides good picture quality in room conditions.

Software

Built-in software This model is no different from the previously reviewed devices from Nokia. operating room Windows system Phone 8 has been expanded with several items in the Settings section. In particular, instructions are provided account for Nokia services, traffic counting, equalizer and Dolby “improver” for wired headphones, muting calls by turning the device over, a utility for checking flash memory occupancy and managing downloaded maps, additional screen options.

There is also a service “Nokia Music” with a “mix radio” function, “Data transfer” for transferring information from an old phone, “Melody creator” for selecting part of a musical composition and setting it as a ringtone, “Photo studio” for editing photos, “ Panorama", "Nokia Smart Cam" and "Nokia Photos Alive" to expand your camera's capabilities. All these utilities are available for free in the application store, but only for users of Nokia devices.

Like other devices based on this mobile operating system, the smartphone contains programs for working with office documents from Microsoft and the OneNote utility, which can be a serious advantage for some users.

Telephone and communications

The smartphone's communication module supports 2G/3G/4G networks. There are no comments about the stability of its operation. Testing of work with 4G/LTE was carried out with the Megafon provider. In the device settings you must enable 4G to receive maximum speed working with data. If the 4G connection is active, when making a call or receiving a call, the smartphone automatically switches to the 3G/2G network, and after the conversation returns to 4G. This algorithm works quickly and unnoticed by users. On the network of this operator, we were able to receive more than 40 Mbit/s for reception and almost 20 Mbit/s for transmission.

Of course, it’s not very clear why such speeds are needed “in the field” on a mobile device (especially considering the cost of services), but there is something to be proud of. We checked the speed of operation in 3G networks with the MTS operator. The smartphone was able to show very good results - more than 15 Mbit/s for reception and up to 4 Mbit/s for transmission.

Let us remind you that all these values are only guidelines and an assessment of the capabilities of the device. Actual performance depends significantly on reception conditions and network load.

To match the high level of the model, the smartphone has a dual-band wireless adapter, supporting 802.11a/b/g/n standards. In the 2.4 GHz band, the device is capable of connecting to an access point at speeds of up to 72 Mbit/s. If your router supports 5 GHz, then with it you can get a connection speed of 150 Mbps. Real testing showed that in the 5 GHz band the smartphone is not able to use channels 36, 40, 44, 48, which are often the only supported routers with local regional settings. We were able to achieve successful results in this range only using NETGEAR WNDR3800, which was reconfigured to a region supporting channels 149, 153, 157, 161. At the same time, the real performance of the smartphone is 46/17 Mbit/s for reception/transmission at 2.4 GHz and 58/15 Mbit/s for reception/transmission on 5 GHz.

The built-in Bluetooth controller supports file sharing (OPP), audio processing ( Speakerphone, stereo headphones), playback control. Data reception and transmission speed is up to 170 KB/s.

The smartphone has a GPS and Glonass signal receiver (according to information from the manufacturer, it is impossible to confirm this with utilities). There are no complaints about the stability of the module, the speed of determining coordinates and accuracy, including when placed in a car while driving in dense urban areas.

Like other devices in this class, Nokia Lumia 925 has built-in NFC, the antenna of which is located at the top of the rear panel. We have already written that the situation with this technology in Windows Phone 8 is gradually improving. Work with the NDEF format has been implemented and there are programs for reading and writing labels. However, compatibility with Android devices is not complete.

We were unable to exchange photos, but the tags of many popular formats (contacts, SMS and others) recorded in the Nokia NFC Writer program were correctly perceived by the opponent. But devices are used to transmit geographic coordinates different ways and don't understand each other.

The smartphone in question also has an FM radio. It only works with connected headphones, the sound is output only to them. From additional options there is a list of favorites. There is no direct frequency input, recording, or audio output to an external speaker.

Performance

We have already said in previous articles that the issue of performance within the Windows Phone 8 platform is not as important as that of Android. The main reason for this is the significantly limited range of hardware platforms used in these devices. In fact, we only encountered a few modifications of the dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4. At the same time, the top devices have the same MSM8960 chip, the cores of which operate at a frequency of up to 1.5 GHz, and the graphics module is Adreno 225. The second reason is the slow development of Windows Phone 8 itself and applications for it. Although the hero of this review has interesting feature, which is worth mentioning in this section.

As for the comparison between the software platforms of modern smartphones, this question is also not very relevant, since the applications requiring resources are very different and direct comparison is almost impossible. In addition, it is unlikely that users will choose a platform based on the speed of smartphones with it.

Thus, in this case, we can only check that the new model is not very different from other devices on the same SoC. To do this, we ran several tests presented in the store catalog and popular browser benchmarks.

* Nokia Lumia 920 and Lumia 925 do not pass the graphics subtest in the Antutu Benchmark utility

Despite some differences, in general we can assume that in terms of performance the new model is at the same level as other devices on this hardware platform.

There are not so many games for the Windows Phone 8 platform today, not to mention beautiful, interesting and complex ones. Of course, there were no problems with the “birds”, except for the relatively small screen, which was not easy to switch to after 5″, not to mention tablets. Of the 3D projects, we tried Asphalt 7 Heat and Assassin's Creed and NFS: Hot Pursuit, since demo versions of them can be freely downloaded from the store. All programs worked well, there were no delays, and the image quality was quite consistent with the platform.

From the point of view of user experience when working with the smartphone interface, we have no comments. The device quickly responds to user actions; all lists and menus scroll through very smoothly. Delays with “running dots” showing the progress of the wait occur only in some operations related to the network or storage, for example, when installing a large game. However, this is typical for most modern smartphones, regardless of the platform.

As we have already said, performance in itself is of little interest. Users are more concerned about comfortable work with specific applications, rather than scores in benchmarks. The device in question has the Nokia Smart Cam program installed, which we described above. Some of the options for processing “multi-images” proposed in it are quite demanding on computing resources. In particular, the device takes several seconds to analyze and obtain the result, which can already be considered quite noticeable. Fortunately, you don’t have to do this operation immediately after shooting; you can select the parameters and select the desired mode later. In this case, it would be good to use a quad-core processor (of course, provided that the program algorithms can use so many cores).

No particular heating of the device body was noted during testing with resource-intensive programs and utilities.

Considering that it is advisable to use a cable to record large amounts of information into a smartphone, we tested the speed in MTP mode. The results are similar to those previously obtained for other devices on this platform - writing about 15 MB/s, reading - a little over 20 MB/s.

Video playback test

Everything in this section remains unchanged. Windows Phone 8 devices work well with MP4 files and can display options encoded in “mobile” profiles up to 1080p30/720p60 inclusive. The standard player also allows you to watch AVI, but MKV is unfamiliar to it. The only third-party player present in the store does not provide a demo version for local files, and the reviews for it are a little scary. But you can try the cPlayer utility in test mode before purchasing. True, it only works with network resources via DLNA. Unfortunately, it was unable to play our MKV test files and other samples in this format. Therefore, our testing table according to the “Method for testing video signal playback and display devices. Version 1 (for mobile devices)" has retained its appearance.

An additional test for the smooth playback of HD video resolutions at different frame rates uses files in the MP4 container. So we were able to conduct it with the smartphone model in question.

"Red" marks mark possible problems related to the playback of the corresponding files.

At the moment it is difficult to recognize solutions on Windows Phone 8 good players video files. However, they cope successfully with specially prepared videos; the only thing missing is versatility and availability in the store of alternative player programs.

Battery life

The device has a non-removable battery with a capacity of 2000 mAh, like its predecessor. Formally, this is not very much, but optimization of the operating system and applications must be taken into account. It will be interesting to see how using a different type of screen will affect battery life. Complete Charger allows you to replenish the charge in three hours. This is unexpectedly high, given the parameters of the battery and power supply. Interestingly, this model can gain an advantage when using a more powerful unit - in testing with a 2 A version from one of the tablets, we were able to achieve a halving of time - up to an hour and a half. We will also mention here support for additional accessories that allow you to charge your smartphone wirelessly. Let's note another interesting point - the low charge warning appears at about 10%. If you continue to use the device until the charge is very low (say, up to 3%) and then turn it off, you will no longer be able to turn on the phone without first charging it for several minutes.

Testing was carried out with the brightness level set to the minimum level, closest to the 100 cd/m² value used for other devices. Unfortunately, in Windows Phone 8 there are only three gradations for this parameter and maintain the same value for different devices impossible. The table shows the results of other models based on this operating system, tested using this method. Due to the stated OS limitation, direct comparison may be very accurate. As with the Samsung ATIV S, we tested the reading scenario not only in the standard “black on white” mode, but also in “white on black”. The results for the latter are given in parentheses.

A direct comparison of the new product with the Lumia 920 shows that it performed slightly better in the video viewing scenario. However, if you look at the reading mode, the situation is the opposite. Even if you use the more economical (the gain is more than 40%) “white on black” mode, the lag behind its predecessor is very strong - more than one and a half times. Unfortunately, the closed nature of the platform and restrictions on precisely setting screen brightness do not allow us to determine the reasons for this behavior of smartphones.

When actually using the device, it can work with a relatively low load for more than a day. So, in general, the performance of the model in question corresponds to the current situation - if you’re lucky, the battery will last for a day active work. So, in this parameter, top models with Windows Phone 8 differ little from solutions of a similar level on other platforms. Perhaps Nokia, as the most active supporter of this operating system, should have paid attention to battery life and offered a model with a larger battery than usual.

Prices

The recommended price of the device in our market is 24,990 rubles, which corresponds to the Lumia 920 at the time of its announcement. This once again confirms the evolutionary nature of the new product. The small number of flagships for a platform that is currently difficult to call popular is difficult to evaluate in terms of cost. If the user needs Windows Phone 8, then there are not many options to choose from. However, once you give up the rigid choice of platform, the situation changes dramatically.

Bottom line

Nokia Lumia 925 has to be assessed from several angles. From Nokia's point of view, this is the flagship of the line on Windows Phone 8. Compared to its predecessor, it received a new body and screen, but lost the built-in wireless charging module and half of the flash memory. Nokia Lumia 920 is still too thick for its diagonal, and the new product is more consistent with the status of a stylish model in both design and materials. So in this sense, apart from the rejection of bright colors, progress is visible.

With the screen the situation is less obvious. The size and resolution have not changed, but this time AMOLED technology was chosen. If you don’t know this detail, then externally the screens will seem equally magnificent and provide a bright contrast image in any conditions. Influence this change The battery life is ambiguous - in the video watching scenario there is a positive trend, but in reading we got significantly lower results. In any case, consider new model it is necessary integrally and for most users it will clearly be preferable to its predecessor.

As for the minuses, it is of course sad that the memory capacity has decreased and there is no slot for expanding it; the implementation of the external speaker also raises minor complaints. In all other respects, this is an excellent smartphone on a good platform, high-quality and fast communication modules, support for LTE and NFC.

However, all this is clearly not enough to successfully compete with devices based on the Android platform. There, the user can find large screens with Full HD resolution, memory card support, four or more processor cores, powerful graphics modules, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, not to mention a wide range of applications and innovative features. Even the new case, when directly compared with tops from other manufacturers, no longer looks so good in terms of the implementation of some of its details.

And among its rivals in the Windows Phone 8 camp Nokia smartphone The Lumia 925 cannot be clearly placed at the top. True, there are too few models here, and most of them were released a very long time ago by the standards of mobile market. In addition, they have quite significant differences between themselves (including cost), simplifying the choice according to the user’s requirements.

Thus, it turns out that the device considered turned out to be very good and technically modern smartphone, but finding a buyer for it will clearly not be easy.

Nokia... Once the largest manufacturer mobile phones, now almost a division of Microsoft. Not everyone believes in his joyful future. Even loyal fans of the brand, who once declared that “there is Nokia and everyone else” and something about “the largest database of Symbian applications,” have long ceased shyly hiding their newly purchased Android smartphones behind their backs and making excuses to their friends for ideological betrayal. Nevertheless, the new Lumia models gave me, as well as other reviewers (and, gratifyingly, users) mostly positive impressions (they complained about the applications, more precisely, their number, and not about the quality of the devices themselves). These were also the case from the older (or one of the older) model Nokia Lumia 925

Design, assembly, ergonomics

Left - Lumia 925, right - 920

Almost any reviewer will say that the Nokia Lumia 925 is not at all similar to the Lumia 920. Well, that is, not exactly, the family traits are visible, but its shape is more reminiscent of younger models, like the Nokia Lumia 720. And all thanks to the outlines, this nice “window” angularity.

Only the Lumia 925 looks much more solid than the younger ones. And not only due to the fact that it is slightly larger in width and height (139x71 versus 128x67.5 for the Lumia 720), but also because of the aluminum silver-gray frame covering the sides of the smartphone.

The back of the smartphone is made of polycarbonate. It is matte and comes in white, gray and black. It's neat and doesn't collect fingerprints, but dust and sticky dirt stick to it well. Noticeably so. For example, a pencil easily remains on this surface, look:

But it washes off just as easily... I hope...

Fortunately, it is so.

In short, it's a cool surface, not only because it leaves room for creativity, but also because it's pleasant to the touch and, unlike the Nokia 920, not slippery. Continuing the comparison with this model, which is close to the hero of the review, I will note the lightness and thinness of the hero against its background: 128 grams and 9 millimeters is not 185 grams and 10.7 millimeters.

True, the grace of the Nokia 925 did not come without sacrifice: the 920th model had a built-in wireless charging unit, an optional feature, but interesting and convenient. In the case of the Lumia 925, you will have to purchase a special overlay panel for this functionality. The hero of the review has a non-removable cover, so this panel will immediately add those missing millimeters to him. If you press the smartphone in the center, the polycarbonate bends slightly. Moreover, you feel that you can bend this lid until the air layer between it and the internal elements runs out. When pressed, the case creaks slightly in the camera area, and in general it seems that there is a tiny gap in the corner at the junction with the aluminum strip. When contacting the bottom of the device, no sounds are heard and no gaps are visible. However, when described, these housing problems seem more serious than in reality. In fact, they are very insignificant and unnoticeable. Despite them, Lumia gives the impression of a high-quality and well-built device. In addition, creaks and gaps may turn out to be problems with a particular specimen that has passed through several dozen bloodthirsty hands of reviewers.

The left and bottom edges of the smartphone are smooth and free of any connectors. Everything fit on the other two sides. On top there is an audio jack, microUSB and the path to the SIM card slot, covered with a plug that can be removed using a key-clip. On the right are the volume, lock and power keys, as well as the camera launch button.

Its eye is large, built in the center, somewhat low, protrudes slightly from the body and is equipped with a satellite, which serves as a double flash. The position of the camera, in my opinion, is not very good: with a standard grip, the fingers almost always rest on the lens. The three touch buttons located under the screen are good for everyone, except one. Perhaps this is not a smartphone problem, but my own, but the real inconvenience was shooting on camera with my grip: I constantly pressed with part of my palm on touch button search, and, accordingly, exited the mode. In general, when using the device with your right hand (I mostly use my left), this key should always fall under the thumb.

Nevertheless, in a hand of almost any size a smartphone, which, in my opinion, has very good weight and size characteristics, fits well. He feels comfortable there. And also, it has an optimal screen size, just the golden mean: 4.5 inches. Let's move on to it.

Screen

In Nokia Lumia 925, not only the diagonal, but also the screen resolution is the same as its predecessor, and it is 1280x768 pixels. But what has changed is the type of matrix. Here it is not IPS, but AMOLED, loved by some, but not so much by others for its too flashy colors. A gift to everyone who is critical at this point: the smartphone offers color profile settings. In it you can tweak two parameters - color saturation (10 gradations from “Natural colors” with an interval of “Saturated” to “Bright”) and color temperature (also 10 gradations from cold to warm).

I must say, this is a great idea: I set the first lever to the “Natural” position, and moved the second closer to warm colors, after which the image on the screen became exactly the same for my eyes, which are not too fond of the “bulging-eyed” AMOLED. The screen brightness is not record-breaking (about 280 cd/m² at maximum), but this is not necessary, thanks to the excellent contrast.

The black color here is truly black (can’t be distinguished from the bordering frame!), with no highlights, and accordingly, the device produced infinite contrast. Thanks to it, and also to the excellent anti-reflective coating, the image is clearly readable on a bright sunny day. In addition also Windows fonts Phone is a delight (in my opinion, one of the strongest advantages of the system). In addition to anti-glare, the smartphone also uses an effective oleophobic coating, and there is no air gap between the screen and glass. Viewing angles are also excellent, although with a strong deviation you may notice the appearance of a bluish tint. Below are colorimeter measurements with the default color settings (neutral color temperature and bright colors) set. The sensor distinguishes up to ten simultaneous touches. As usual, he is very sensitive and responds well to the touch of gloved hands.

System and performance

Dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 (MSM8960 chip), 1.5 GHz, Adreno 225 graphics module, gigabyte of RAM... By the standards of the Android world, it’s only “average”, but in the case of less demanding applications Windows resources Phone 8 is a flagship. And nothing strange, the interface of this operating system flies. So are games like Angry Birds or Asphalt 7 Heat, which we downloaded a demo of from the app store. To be honest, the small number of decent games is depressing, and even in the paid segment there are not enough of them. Well, in the free one, everything is completely sad... In it, of the beautifully drawn ones, I found only a few Temple Runs, and my attempts to find decent races ended in failure. Either play the cartoonish-looking 3D Moto rally, or the terrible 3D Brutal Chase, or pay for old version Real Racing 2 while the entire civilized world, even Yabloko, is playing the free Real Racing 3... In a word, everything is sad. And despite the good gaming capabilities of the smartphone, it is doubly upsetting. Good opportunities- this is told to us not only by common sense and knowledge of technical characteristics and comparing them with those on Android, but also by a couple of benchmarks.

True, in the famous Antutu the test only partially started: for some reason it flatly refused to check the GPU, but it measured the capabilities of the CPU and memory without problems. So 16 gigabytes of memory and the lack of external cards seem like a problem, but not that much. What should we actually hammer them with? Movies? Maybe, but there are no mkv containers or corresponding codecs. And you won’t find any normal alternative video players during the day. Windows Media Player is not that bad, but I would like to have a choice! Maybe some of them will go to music? Good idea. But the most adequate thing is to fill them with photographs and videos taken with your own hands. Fortunately, the camera allows it. But at some point you begin to understand that clogged memory cannot be freed normally. If the “Others” folder is clogged with applications, you can only free it with a system reset... What can I say... SkyDrive cloud and synchronization will help you. Speaking of clouds: finally an application for Dropbox has appeared in the store... But among the mass of shortcomings, I would like to highlight several advantages of the system. Well, except for the speed of operation and, in my opinion, a successful user interface with excellent fonts. This is again Nokia's merit, however: the navigators in these Windows smartphones are the best on the market. Excellent city maps, clear navigation and public transport maps. And the device picks up satellites very quickly (sometimes in 5 seconds). Oh yes, one more pleasant detail specific to the Nokia 925: a clock in standby mode. They are not bright, but thanks to the black-black black, it is imperceptible, they are clearly visible. It’s just a pity that the manufacturer didn’t display any other option on the standby panel important information. For example, the urgent calendar page or missed calls.

And one more thing: the call can be silenced by turning the smartphone screen down. And unlocking the device is now fashionable with a double tap.

Sound

The external speaker is located behind, it is average in volume, and at maximum it can distort the sound. But in headphones the sound turns out to be pleasant. The call is heard well, the vibration alert seemed rather weak. You can use your smartphone as a player by using good headphones. But when playing music through some applications, the device heats up.

Camera

The 8.7 megapixel main camera has good aperture and can take decent pictures in the dark. Naturally, it has autofocus and a flash, and it’s also nice that it can be called up with a separate button. This is, of course, not the 41 megapixel Nokia 1020, however, this smartphone is also one of the best camera phones today (it is one of the participants in the camera competition, which will be available very soon on our website). In the main camera app, the settings are quite simple. You can select HDR mode or shooting options depending on the lighting and purpose (night photography, close-up, sports). You can manually set ISO (100-3200), exposure number (2...-2), white balance and focus assistant light, which can be confused with the flash. The camera results are quite nice (in pitch darkness, probably the best), but still the iPhone (even the old 4s) creates pictures with a lower aperture...more beautiful, or something. Below, the first photo in the pair was taken by Lumia, the second by iPhone 5s. And yet, the camera in auto mode turns a little green. As usual, Nokia has separated some camera capabilities into separate applications. These are “Panorama”, “Live Photos” and Nokia Smart Cam, which allows you to shoot a subject in motion, collect faces from different frames, select the best shot and remove moving objects.

And in the evening:

Autonomy and heating

Nokia 925, thanks to the Amoled screen, uses energy quite economically. So, in a fairly intensive mode of working with the camera and other joys, it works for about a day and a half without recharging. The smartphone played 720p video at maximum brightness for 7 hours and 35 minutes. But the smartphone gets quite hot, and sometimes unexpectedly. The smartphone was in the bag, the sensor worked, and the navigation program turned on. When I took the device out of my bag, I needed some restraint not to let it fall right there on the asphalt, the device was so hot. No, really, outside in winter it could replace a small fire. It can definitely keep you warm. I was equally impressed by the device’s warmth during Skype video calls. Well, games, tests - that goes without saying.

Bottom line

When you look at the Nokia Lumia 925 (and some others successful models line, like the Lumia 720), you can’t help but think about the injustice of the world. Pictures like “Unequal Marriage” immediately come to mind; images of familiar couples spontaneously appear in my head, where “she” is golden, and “he” is a moral monster (or vice versa, the phrase here is not for butthurt, but for illustration) and so on... Well how is it, I think, the manufacturer has produced a device with such a wonderful screen and camera, decent sound, nice design, and here you have Windows Phone 8... Yes, the system flies, but in my opinion it has good interface... But where are the applications? Where are the codecs? And inside it there are a lot of shortcomings, such as the inability to normally free memory clogged with applications. Is it really that difficult to fix? Although, if you are not too dependent on heavy applications, such a smartphone may be suitable for you.

Finally reached our editorial office new flagship from Nokia. Russian for your attention Nokia review Lumia 925 is a cocktail of an aluminum body, PureView camera and the power of Windows Phone 8.

As usual, my review begins by talking about the packaging of the device. Unfortunately, I was not able to take a photo of the box, but I can assure you that, unlike Nokia carrier smartphones (810, 822, 928, 505), the 925 model received a full set - a beautiful, familiar, blue box made of embossed cardboard, on which smartphone images. In the box you will find:

  • Nokia Lumia 925;
  • Charger;
  • micro-USB cable;
  • headphones (pretty good);
  • brief instructions and warranty card;

Since we are dealing with Windows Phone 8, no additional software is required here. But more on that later. It is worth saying that by releasing the Nokia Lumia 925, Nokia made a completely unusual move. They moved away from standard design canons and even used other body materials. A smartphone was born in a polycarbonate case with an aluminum frame. Externally, from the front side, Nokia Lumia 925 is almost identical to Nokia Lumia 920. The body of the device is very thin - only 8.5 millimeters.

We turn the smartphone over to the other side and see a completely different picture. Instead of an elegant, mirror-like bezel around the small camera eye, we see a huge 8.7-megapixel camera lens that protrudes about 2 millimeters above the surface of the panel.

This looks like a design decision HTC smartphones- Most of their phones have cameras that protrude above the panel of the device. Everyone knows that over time this will end with an extremely scratched and scuffed camera rim. Time will tell what will happen with Nokia Lumia 925. A dual LED flash sits comfortably above the camera. The question is why not xenon, like in the Nokia Lumia 928. It is unknown. However, when combined with PureView technology, the camera can take extremely good photos.

Since we're already talking about the camera, let's take a closer look at its capabilities. It uses a 6-lens camera. Sensor resolution is 8.7 megapixels. As a result, the user receives a picture in a resolution of 3264x2448 pixels. Like the 920 model, there is optical image stabilization, which will allow you to shoot excellent video without fear of camera shake. There is also a front camera. it can take pictures in a resolution of 1280x960, which corresponds to 1.3 megapixels. The rear camera shoots video in FullHD 1920x1080 format.

As already mentioned, the frame of the device is made of aluminum, and the inserts themselves are made of polycarbonate. Because of this, the smartphone has gained a little weight, but in comparison with the Nokia Lumia 920 this is practically not felt. The device body is available in two colors: black and gray. It looks a little strange compared to the colorful and glamorous predecessors in the Lumia line. According to Nokia, this decision is motivated by the smartphone's orientation towards a more serious audience. Life will tell whether these colors will take root.

A number of device outputs have undergone changes. Now all kinds of outputs are on the upper end of the device. Thus, Nokia emphasized that the days of USB charging are becoming a thing of the past; the wireless method is now trending. But here lies the rub. The fact is that out of the box, Nokia Lumia 925 cannot be charged wirelessly (like Nokia Lumia 920). To do this, she needs a special back cover.

A similar thing is observed in the Nokia Lumia 720. The battery in the Nokia Lumia 925 is non-removable - the body is completely sewn up from top to bottom. The battery capacity is 2000 mAh. The optimal indicator for a Windows Phone device. If you look at the back panel, you will find three small holes there - it is with their help that wireless charging is carried out.

So if you want to charge your aluminum girlfriend wirelessly, please buy a special panel.

There, near the USB output, there is a 3.5 mm output, a slot for a SIM card (micro SIM) and a speaker. The bottom end is completely free. As in other smartphones, the left side does not have any controls, while the right side houses the volume rocker, power button and camera shutter button.

Now let's talk about the hardware of the device. Nokia Lumia 925, like everyone else modern devices from Nokia runs on Windows Phone 8 OS. But there is one caveat. The fact is that the Nokia Lumia 925 has the GDR2 update installed, which brought a number of innovations to the operating system, namely:

  • FM radio;
  • the ability to customize screen color shades;
  • the ability to change the camera application, which is launched by a physical button;
  • flip-to-silence;
  • new wallpaper;
  • Nokia Smart Cam;

Otherwise, everything remains the same - Qualcomm S4 Snapdragon processor with a frequency of 1.5 GHz with two cores, 1 GB of RAM. 16 GB (WHY NOT 32???) of storage is available for user data. Due to the nature of the OS, about 14.5GB will be available out of the box. This volume can be expanded only through SkyDrive and other cloud services, since the slot for a memory card simply did not fit into the thin aluminum case. Alas.

The smartphone is stuffed with a variety of sensors. Starting from proximity sensors and brightness adjustment near the front camera to a gyroscope, electronic compass, accelerometer, A-GPS and GLONASS sensor. Together with the exclusive HERE applications: City lens, maps, transit and drive, they provide you with perfect, highly accurate and high-quality navigation.

The Nokia Lumia 925 screen is made using PureMotionHd+ technology, covered with Gorilla Glass 2. Resolution is 1280x768 pixels. The screen diagonal is standard - 4.5 inches. The pixel density per inch is high - as much as 332ppi. Since this model is the second flagship, the set of screen parameters is also flagship.

Here there is ClearBlack and support for controlling the screen with any objects. The Amber update, which was originally built into this smartphone, allows you to customize the screen color rendering to your taste. A very convenient thing - the screen can be personalized to the maximum.

To sum it up, the Nokia Lumia 925 smartphone can be called ideal. Everything is perfectly balanced - perfect performance powerful processor, a large amount of RAM and a well-optimized OS along with a durable aluminum-polycarbonate body. A large, bright and very high-quality screen with an optimal diagonal makes operating your smartphone very convenient. The only drawback I found with this device is the 16GB of storage. I would like 32GB.
