Best laptop processor Choosing a good processor for a laptop

With the widespread use of smartphones and tablets, the laptop has become a separate segment in mobile electronics. Yes, the same operations are possible on it, but a smartphone and a tablet will not be able to calculate an estimate, develop a project, and just play serious games too. All devices just have different tasks and different CPUs. But what should be the processor for a laptop, it is he who is responsible for performance - a question that each user decides for himself individually.

So when choosing a portable computer, this component should be treated very carefully. It is better to immediately choose a processor with such characteristics so that they are enough with a margin for further work on it. Because replacing it with another, most likely, will not work.

Main characteristics of processors

The CPU is actually the most important part of any laptop as it handles most of the vital processes. So, it is he who is responsible for how efficiently the entire laptop will work.

Of the main parameters when buying this device, you should pay attention to the following points:

  • manufacturer;
  • energy saving;
  • number of cores;
  • clock frequency;
  • built-in cache.

Manufacturer

On the this moment There are two electronics giants - AMD and Intel. 98% of the market is divided between these firms. Others also produce them, but the quality of these products does not stand up to any competition compared to these two corporations.

Only these manufacturers have introduced mechanisms capable of automatic mode adjust core frequency:

  • Turbo Core;
  • turbo boost.

These technologies help to automatically adjust the frequency of the cores depending on their workload. For dual-core laptop models, the performance of one core is accelerated if the program is not designed to work in a multi-core environment.

energy saving

Given the high demand for smartphones and tablets, most laptop processors are designed to consume as little power as possible. So almost all laptop models have LED screen backlighting, which helps to save energy resources. To this end, AMD has a function AMD Cool'n'Quiet, while Intel has Enhanced Intel Speedstep Technology, which adjust the CPU frequency and supply voltage. So it is possible to extend energy resources, reduce CPU heating. When increased performance is needed, the clock frequency, followed by the voltage, increases. If the device is not currently busy with bulk work or the user is just surfing the Internet, then the clock frequency is automatically reduced, and the voltage is slightly reduced. This reduces power consumption and time battery life increases.

But here it is important to understand that in general, energy saving is helped by a decrease in performance. Simply put, if a laptop is used as a typewriter, then an energy-saving processor is needed. For complex calculations, such as modern games or video processing require, it is no longer suitable.

Almost all processors latest generation AMD and Intel, both mid-range and high-end, can work with these new technologies.

Number of cores

Now you will not surprise anyone with multi-core microprocessors. This technology is used in all modern devices. It is no longer uncommon to find laptops with a dual-core CPU on sale. They are now equipped with the most budget laptops. And on more expensive multimedia, gaming and enterprise models, three- and four-core processors are installed.

But such CPUs also have disadvantages:

  • Price. The greater the number of cores, the greater the price of the chip.
  • Heat dissipation requirements increase as power consumption increases.
  • Software. Not all programs are designed for multi-core systems.

In modern laptops, the work of the processor directly depends on their number. But again, for gaming laptop frequency is more important. Not all of them will be downloaded. And when processing a film or big photos all cores will be fully loaded. In other words, the processor should optimally meet your needs. The best laptops in the price / performance category are precisely the dual-core models.

Clock frequency

Measured in MHz. Logically, the limit value should be decisive. But for laptops, the situation is somewhat different. Increasing the clock speed inevitably increases the load on the battery. The chip requires maximum cooling to operate efficiently, but the result is reduced battery life.

Let's take an example. Processors Core i7820QM operate at a frequency of 1.73 GHz. If compared with Celeron P4600, which has this value of 2 GHz, it may seem that the second is faster. But let's look at the price. The first model costs $550, and Celeron P4600 only $80! Paradox? No. At Core i7 there are 4 cores with a cache of 8 MB, while the “rival” has only 2 cores with 2 MB of cache.

Now it becomes clear that there are other factors besides clock speed. For example, the availability of technology turbo boost and Hyper Threading.

Cache

Cache - memory, the same important indicator as RAM. Here is a completely different level of data exchange speeds. Accordingly, the size of the cache affects the characteristics of the processor itself. For example, CPU speed depends on its size, and indicators such as additional cores and frequency level fade into the background.

But the size of the cache affects the cost of the chip. In addition, a large volume leads to more rapid growth temperature of the CPU itself. And in modern laptops, a three-level cache can reach a size of up to 8 MB. Therefore, in most chips, the cache does not exceed 2–3 MB.

Comparison of Intel and AMD by prices

If we take such popular processors from Intel as Core i3, Core i5 and Core i7, and compare prices with popular A4, A6, A8 and A10 from AMD, and then combine the results in the form of a graph, the result will be as shown in the figure below.

Now you can clearly see the big difference in price. Processors from AMD are 3.5-4 times cheaper than Intel. Due to the low cost, AMD products are very popular both in Russia and in the CIS. With a small difference in performance, buying a laptop, you can save a lot.

But on the other hand, an integrated graphics card from AMD can become good decision for gamers. But we must always remember that such high-speed systems are subject to heating and significant energy consumption. And if battery life is critical, then it's better to add some money and buy products from Intel.

Comparison by technical parameters

Based on the technical parameters of the CPU, the same technical parameters produced by AMD and Intel, you can decide which processor from these families for a laptop is better:

We select a processor for a laptop

If with this CPU a laptop can easily cope with the tasks set, consuming a minimum of energy, then it is ideal for it. For portable computers, autonomy is the main condition, unlike a desktop PC. And when the energy consumption for cooling the chip is minimal, then the entire laptop from batteries will work longer. For different purposes, you can pick up on sale and different laptops, each in its own price range. And the selection of the most powerful chip for it depends on what tasks the computer will mainly perform.

Simple Tasks

If you are supposed to mainly solve such everyday tasks as typing in office applications, searching for information on the Internet, working with a photo editor, watching video files, then a super-powerful processor is not needed at all. With such daily needs, the dual-core Intel Core i3. With tasks of this type, it works easily, and the battery lasts for a long time.

Gaming PC

For a gamer, the power of the processor will be decisive. quad core AMD Athlon 2 with an operating frequency of 2800 MHz will be better able to cope with the graphic requirements of the game than, for example, Intel Core i5 with two cores.

If you need long battery life, then the operating voltage on the chip can be lowered from 1.4 volts to 1.2, and the overall power consumption will decrease by 30%. Laptop processors from AMD will be as economical as Intel's, but better at gaming.

If you intend to use the laptop for a long time for games, in order to avoid overheating, you need to periodically replace the thermal paste.

Design work and video editing

Development of volumetric projections in 3D, design work, video editing and cutting, complex graphic constructions require high data exchange rates in computing processes. Maximum performance at low power consumption, capable of delivering CPU Intel Core i7 Sandy Bridge plus a dedicated high performance graphics card.

With such equipment on board, a laptop can easily prepare a cost estimate, calculate a preliminary project with the client in order to show the pros and cons of the order on the spot. And here the speed of calculations plays a decisive role.

TOP-3 rating 2016 CPU for laptops

Currently, chips of different power are required for different tasks. Both AMD and Intel are successfully working in this direction. We have prepared the TOP 3 best processors for laptops:

  • AMD FX Vishera. It has the highest CPU frequency at the moment, which is 4700 MHz. Four cores can work alternately and all eight at once. The main buyers are the owners of gaming personal computers and laptops. In addition to very high performance, it has the largest amount of cache.
  • Intel Core i7 Devil's Canyon. Works very productively with video editing programs, 3D modeling with complex calculations. High performance goes well with economical battery life.
  • quad core Intel Core i7 Skylake. Designed to work with complex computing processes. In addition to working with a video editor, it is suitable for testing programs. It has the lowest power consumption among chips of the same class.

Conclusion

Now you have a good idea of what the peculiarity of mobile chips is and will be able to choose the right laptop model for your purposes. And knowing what an AMD or Intel processor for a laptop is capable of, you can more confidently decide how much money from the budget can be allocated to buy a laptop. The choice of model is up to you.

Hi friends! Today I wrote a very relevant article for you about choosing a processor for a laptop!

Confess when you lastwere in a computer store and chose a laptop (and the choice of any laptop starts with a processor), then they completely trusted the seller, since all these names of processors and video cards, with some kind of letter designations U, M, MQ, N, A6, R5, MX, you've only been confused. As a result, already at home, you figured it out a bit and realized that you bought the wrong thing. And I completely understand you, because now is a difficult time and in order to have the maximum possible profit, the manufacturer is sometimes on various marketing tricks, sometimes selling us the "latest" processor, which, upon closer inspection, can hardly be called the newest, since according to all test results it is inferior to the old processor, produced 5 years ago.

When I asked this question to the general manager of the HP Moscow store (Hewlett-Packard), he answered me like this:" AT Nowadays, manufacturers of mobile processors put low energy consumption at the forefront, since it is believed that the device should first of all consume less energy and work autonomously for a long time on one battery without recharging, but you remember from school physics that mThe instantaneous power over a period of time is equal to the total transmitted energy, and if this energy is not enough, then where can the power come from?»

In simple words friends, most modern laptops (at a price of 40-50 thousand rubles!) have low-power, but economical processors. Then a question! If we want to play modern games on a laptop without brakes, then what should we do? How to choose a processor for a laptop computer device was powerful and inexpensive? In today's article, we will try to answer all these questions and tell you how laptops sold in stores differ.

Portable computers(laptops) are very popular today. Desire to buy new laptop have a very large number of people and as they say demand creates supply. The stores offer dozens of models from various manufacturers. Most buyers who come to the store see this abundance and their eyes start to run wide, which laptop they should choose.

There are several laptop companies (Asus, Lenovo, Acer, etc.). We will not talk about which company is better, it is incorrect in relation to them. Moreover, they all use the same components (processors, video cards, etc.). But let's talk about accessories.

All components installed in the laptop are called in one word - " Hardware platform". The basis (foundation) of the hardware platform is the processor, CPU in Russian, CPU in English. The choice of processor determines whether our laptop will be new or not quite new, low-performance or high-performance, low-power or high-power.

Processors are produced by 2 companies: Intel and AMD. AMD loses out on demand Intel. E sli in 2006 sales AMD processors and Intel were 50 to 50 percent, then in 2010 30 to 70, and now only 18 percent of buyers buy AMD, the remaining 82 percent buy Intel.

Both companies are constantly updating their processors (about once a year). The update does not change the name of the processor, for example, Intel's Core i3 remains Core i3, and AMD A8 remains A8. The update changes the generation of processors, stores do not have time to sell the previous generation, and manufacturers offer a new one, 4 lines are currently sold in stores Intel processors for laptops (there is also Xeon, but this is for mobile workstations):

Intel Core- the most productive processors!

Intel Core M- mid-range processors.

Intel Pentium- below average performance.

Intel Celeron- low performance processors.

Each line has several generations of processors. Let's take a closer look at each line!

Intel Core

Core i3 are the weakest in the line.

Core i5 - medium capabilities.

Core i7 are the most powerful.

To date, 4 generations of Intel Core processors are being sold.

Haswell- release year 2013 ( 4th generation).

Broadwell- release year 2014 ( 5th generation).

skylake release year 2015 ( 6th generation), from this Generations of Intel began producing quad-core i5 processors.

Kaby Lake appeared very recently 7th generation).

You can determine which generation by the first digit, for example:

Core i5-4 200U - 4th generation Haswell (2013)

Core i7-4 510U - 4th generation Haswell(2013)

Core i5-5 200U - 5th Gen Broadwell (2014)

Core i7- 5500U- 5th Generation Broadwell ( 2014)

Core i3- 6 100U - 6th Generation Skylake(2015)

Core i5-6 200U - 6th generation Skylake(2015)

Core i7- 6500U - 6th generation Skylake(2015)

Core i7- 7 500U - 7th generation Kaby Lake (2016)

Core i7- 7 Y75- 7th generation Kaby Lake (2016) ), as you may have noticed the letter Y in the name of the processor, what it means will be discussed in the next section of our article.

Intel Core M

Core has processors with the lowest power consumption Y and here things are a little more complicated.

I don't remember when they appeared, but Ivy Bridge they were Core i3-3229Y.

Intel Core M start with the 5th generation and there are three generations on sale: 5, 6 and 7.
In the 5th generation, Y was singled out separately and they became not Core i, but core M (without i 3, i 5, i 7), for example - Core M 5Y31.

AT In the 6th generation, they were divided into M 3, M 5, M 7 (Core M7-6Y75, Core M5-6Y57, Core M3-6Y30).
AT The 7th generation has only M3, for example - Core M 3-7Y30, but at the same time for i5 and i7 returned Y ( Core i5-7Y54, Core i7-7Y75).

Core M3 - the weakest processor in the line, for example (Intel Core M3-6Y30).

Core M 5 - average possibilities.

Core M 7 - The most powerful.

You can also determine which generation by the first digit, for example:

Intel Core M 5 Y31- 5th generation, based on architecture Broadwell (2014)

intel Core M7-6 Y75 - 6th generation, based on architecture Skylake (2015)

Intel Core M 3- 7 Y30- processor 7th generation of this line, based on the latest Kaby Lake architecture (2016) and performance is about the same intel Core i5-4200U, but during long work it is still inferior to it due to very low power consumption (TDP) - in total 4.5W.

Pentium and Celeron are based on the Atom core and based on the Core core.

And created on the basis Core, have the letter U or M in the name, for example: Celeron 3855 U, Pentium 3560 M. They are capable of light and medium tasks - Internet surfing, office applications and working with simple graphics.

Determine the year of the release of the processor You can also use the first digit

Celeron

2 - release year 2013 and 2014, for example: Celeron 2 970M.

3 - release year 2015 and 2016, for example: Celeron N 3 010.

Pentium

3 - release year 2014, for example Pentium 3 560M.

4 - release year 2015 and 2016, for example: Pentium 4 405U, Pentium N 4 200.

Note: with the number 3, Intel overdid it.
year 2013 ( 3558U, 3556U, N3510)
2014 (N3540, N3530, 3560M)
2015 ( N3700, 3825U, 3805U)
2016 ( N3710).

AMD has the same as Intel Core, The first digit indicates the year of release:

5 - 2013 (A6- 5 200)

6 - 2014 (A6- 6 310)

7 - 2015 (A6- 7 310)

9 - 2016 (A6- 9 210)

  • The performance of processors differs significantly. Intel has the lowest performing Celeron N and the highest performing Core i7 HK is four nuclear processor with an unlocked multiplier (overclockable processor), the performance difference between them is very large, Celeron is 11 times weaker.

AMD doesn't have high performance laptop processors, the highest performance is AMD FX-9830P (latest generation) and it's lower in performance than the 4 core Core i5. AMD's lowest performing processor is E1, equal to Celeron N.

Notebook processor power consumption

Intel processors (Core M, Celeron N and Pentium N) have the smallest power consumption.

U processors have more power consumption, and processors M and H have even more.

The highest power consumption of four nuclear processors: MQ , HQ , HX , HK .

4-core processors U and Y are not produced.

The lower the power consumption, the lower the performance of the processor model!

CPU Core M3 is lower in performance than Core i3 U.

CPU Core i3 U is lower in performance than Core i3 H.

Celeron N is lower in performance than Celeron U.

AMD also, the weaker the processor, the lower the power consumption.

Laptop video card

  • The more powerful the additional video card, the more powerful the processor must be! Game graphics require a large number complex calculations, so laptops are equipped with additional video cards based on processor power and customer needs.Laptops come with one video card (built into the processor), it is often called "integrated",and come with 2 video cards: built-in and additional (discrete). When we turn on the laptop and the desktop appears, this is the work of the built-in card (the processor processes the data and the video card displays the image on the screen), we open the browser and this is the same work of the built-in card. The built-in "integrated" card works with the vast majority of programs, which is why half of the laptops sold have one video card.

An additional (discrete) video card works mainly with 3D graphics (for most users, these are games).

3D graphics vary in severity (the number and quality of objects), so additional video cards are produced with different capacities.

Video cards for general use are produced by AMD (Radeon video cards) and Nvidia ( GeForce graphics cards).

FirePro (AMD) and Quadro (Nvidia) professional cards will not be discussed.

There are currently three lines of Radeon mobile video cards on sale in stores.

R5 - the lowest in performance.

R7 - higher performance.

R9 - the most productive cards.

Each line has a series:

M200 series release year 2014

M300 series release year 2015

M400 series release year 2016

The M400 series is represented by the following graphics cards: R5 M435, R5 M430, R5 M420, R7 M465X, R7 M465, R7 M460, R7 M445, R7 M440, R9 M485X, R9 M470X, R9 M470.

Nvidia, as such, does not have lines, there is a division of GeForce from 10 to 40 and GeForce GTX from 50 to 80.

The first digit indicates the year of publication.

8 - year of release 2014.

9 - year of release 2015.

the second digit means performance, the smaller the number, the lower the performance:

810M820M ....880M

910M920M ....980M

In 2016, GeForce 920MX, 930MX, 940MX video cards appeared and they are 30 percent more productive than 920-940M, as well as GeForce GTX 1050, 1060, 1070, 1080 (they don't have M mobile) they are 2 times more productive than video cards 950-980 M.

Determination of power laptop processor and video card

Buying a laptop begins with viewing the models offered in stores. We offer a simple and fast way to determine the power of the processor and video card.

There is a website on the Internet PassMark http://www.passmark.com and there is a very large database of performance test results of all existing processors, video cards, as well as RAM and hard drive. Based on these tests, a performance index is derived. ToWe will show how to use the site using the example of choosing a laptop.

So, we have 2 laptops with the same price.

HP Pavilion 15-au107ur, Z3B14EA(with Intel Core i5 7200U processor)

and

Lenovo B5180, 80LM012URK(with Intel Core i5 6200U processor)

Let's check the processor performance evaluation.

We go to the site http://www.passmark.com and enter the model of the Intel Core i5 7200U processor installed on the HP Pavilion 15-au107ur laptop into the search box, click on the icon with the Magnifier (Search).

The page will openselect the line with the name of the desired processor Price performance comparison, here it is number 1 (but maybe not the first number) and click on it with the mouse.

In the window that opens, we see the average performance rating is 4725, and the average performance of one core is 1747 (by the way, the number of cores misleads some buyers, for example Pentium processor The N3710 is quad-core, but the single-core performance score is 571).

We also see more information:

These processors have been tested on 281 laptops.

Minimum power consumption (TDP) 7.5 W.

Performance ratings for components of a regular computer or laptop based on the PerformanceTest program

Users from all countries test their laptops and computers with this program and add test results to the database.

For example, I suggest testing Acer laptop Aspire E5-573G-31V3 with Intel Core i3 5005U processor and GeForce 940M graphics card.

Download the program PerformanceTest.

Software-->PerformanceTest

Download Download Performance Test 9.

If you have an old operating system you can download below previous versions programs.

We are installing the program.

The installation process is very simple, you just need to accept the license agreement.

Launching the program after installation.

Click on the Continue button.

If you want to test all the components of your computer or laptop at once (you can also separately), then click on the RUN BENCHMARK button.

Yes.

The test of the processor begins, then the video card, RAM and hard drive.

To ensure that the assessment in the test is true, do not run any applications on the computer during the test, do not touch the mouse. The test itself will last no more than five minutes.

During the test, the processor is loaded with various computational operations.

For a video card test, the PassMark PerformanceTest program creates exactly the same load that would occur with the most demanding computer game. The video card is also tested for 2D and 3D graphics. As you know, graphics come in 2D and 3D.

2D graphics is responsible for displaying a two-dimensional picture: displaying the desktop, watching videos, and the like.

3D graphics is responsible for displaying a three-dimensional image: displaying all the details of a modern game, the application environment is also tested here: DirectX 9, DirectX 10, DirectX 11, DirectX 12.

RAM test. Checked throughput random access memory.

The hard disk test looks like writing small blocks of data to it.

At the end of all tests, we get a general assessment of the configuration of our laptop. In the right part of the window we see the individual ratings of all components. Of course, the result is not so hot, but this laptop costs more than forty thousand rubles. The score for the Intel Core i3 5005U is 2679 and the score for the GeForce 940M is 1479 .

We press OK.

The program offers to enter the test results into its database.

The result (in the form of a report) will always be available via the link:

Hello friends, readers of our site. Today I would like to review the browsers of 2017 for you. Every day, there are many new programs in the world that meet our needs in all areas of digital life.

Hi friends! Today for you, Vladimir wrote an extremely useful

and a very relevant article on choosing a processor for a laptop!

Confess when you lastwere in a computer store and chose a laptop (and the choice of any laptop starts with a processor), then they completely trusted the seller, since all these names of processors and video cards, with some kind of letter designations U, M, MQ, N, A6, R5, MX, you've only been confused. As a result, already at home, you figured it out a bit and realized that you bought the wrong thing, as a new laptop (for 45 thousand rubles)works not so hot as fast, and all games are only on low settings! And I understand you perfectly, because now is a difficult time and in order to have the maximum possible profit, the manufacturer is sometimes on various marketing tricks, sometimes selling us the "latest" processor, which, upon closer inspection, can hardly be called the newest, since according to all test results it is inferior to the old processor, produced 5 years ago.

In simple words, friends, most modern laptops (at a price of 40-50 thousand rubles!) Have low-power, but economical processors. Then a question! If we want to play modern games on a laptop without brakes, then what should we do? How to choose a processor for a laptop so that the computer device itself is powerful and inexpensive? In today's article, we will try to answer all these questions and tell you how laptops sold in stores differ.

Processors are produced by 2 companies: Intel and AMD. AMD loses out on demand Intel. E If in 2006 sales of AMD and Intel processors were 50 to 50 percent, then in 2010 it was 30 to 70, and now only 18 percent of buyers buy AMD, the remaining 82 percent buy Intel.

Both companies are constantly updating their processors (about once a year). The update does not change the name of the processor, for example, Intel's Core i3 remains Core i3, and AMD A8 remains A8. The update changes the generation of processors, stores do not have time to sell the previous generation, and manufacturers offer a new one, 4 lines of Intel processors are now sold in stores for laptops (there is also Xeon, but this is for mobile workstations):

Intel Core- the most productive processors!

Intel Core M- mid-range processors.

Intel Pentium- below average performance.

Intel Celeron- low performance processors.

Each line has several generations of processors. Let's take a closer look at each line!

Intel Core

Core i3 are the weakest in the line.

Core i5 - medium capabilities.

Core i7 are the most powerful.

To date, 4 generations of Intel Core processors are being sold.

Haswell- release year 2013 ( 4th generation).

Broadwell- release year 2014 ( 5th generation).

skylake release year 2015 ( 6th generation), it was from this generation that Intel began to produce quad-core i5 processors.

Core i3-6 100U - 6th Generation Skylake(2015)

Core i5-6 200U - 6th generation Skylake(2015)

Core i7-6 500U - 6th generation Skylake(2015)

Core i7-7 500U - 7th Gen Kaby Lake (2016)

Core i7- 7 Y75- 7th generation Kaby Lake (2016) ), you may have noticed the letter Y in the name of this processor, what it means will be discussed in the next section of our article.

In the 6th generation, they were divided into M 3, M 5, M 7 (Core M7-6Y75, Core M5-6Y57, Core M3-6Y30).
In the 7th generation there is only M3, for example - Core M 3-7Y30, but at the same time for i5 and i7 returned Y ( Core i5-7Y54, Core i7-7Y75).

Core M3 - the weakest processor in the line, for example (Intel Core M3-6Y30).

Core M 5 - average possibilities.

Core M 7 - The most powerful.

You can also determine which generation by the first digit, for example:

Intel Core M 5 Y31 - 5th generation, based on architecture Broadwell (2014)

intel Core M7-6 Y75 - 6th generation, based on architecture Skylake (2015)

2 - release year 2013 and 2014, for example: Celeron 2 970M.

3 - release year 2015 and 2016, for example: Celeron N 3 010.

3 - release year 2014, for example Pentium 3 560M.

4 - release year 2015 and 2016, for example: Pentium 4 405U, Pentium N 4 200.

Note: with the number 3, Intel overdid it.
2013 (3558U, 3556U, N3510)
2014 (N3540, N3530, 3560M)
2015 (N3700, 3825U, 3805U)
2016 (N3710).

AMD has the same as Intel Core, The first digit indicates the year of release:

5 - 2013 (A6- 5 200)

6 - 2014 (A6- 6 310)

7 - 2015 (A6- 7 310)

9 - 2016 (A6- 9 210)

  • The performance of processors differs significantly. Intel has the lowest performance Celeron N, and the highest performance Core i7 HK is a four-core processor with an unlocked multiplier (overclockable processor), the performance difference between them is very large, Celeron is 11 times weaker.

Quad-core processors have the highest power consumption: MQ, HQ, HX, HK.

4-core processors U and Y are not produced.

The lower the power consumption, the lower the performance of the processor model!

Core M3 processor is lower in performance than Core i3 U.

The Core i3 U processor is lower in performance than the Core i3 H.

Celeron N is lower in performance than Celeron U.

AMD also, the weaker the processor, the lower the power consumption.

If you want to buy a laptop with an Intel processor, then pay attention to the letters in the name of the laptop.

Y - processor with low power consumption; 11 W
U - ultra-mobile processor, with low power consumption; 15-25W
M - mobile processor; 35-55W
Q - quad-core processor; e.g. Intel Core i5 7300HQ. Grade 6942
X - extreme processor; an expensive top-end solution, such as the Intel Core i7-3940XM. Score 9372.
H - a processor for a gaming laptop with a powerful graphics card, for example Intel Core i5 7300HQ. Rated 6942, usually comes with a GeForce GTX 1050 gaming graphics card.
K - the processor has an unlocked multiplier (overclocking is possible), for example Intel Core i7 6820HK. Score 9062.

Laptop video card

  • The more powerful the additional video card, the more powerful the processor must be! Game graphics require a lot of complex calculations, so laptops are equipped with additional graphics cards based on processor power and customer needs.

Laptops come with one video card (built into the processor), it is often called "integrated",

and come with 2 video cards: built-in and additional (discrete).

Video cards for general use are produced by AMD (Radeon video cards) and Nvidia (GeForce video cards).

7 - release year 2013 (example - video card GeForce GT 750M)

8 - release year 2014 (example - GeForce GeForce 820M)

9 - release year 2015 (example - GeForce GeForce 940M)

the second digit means performance, the smaller the number, the lower the performance:

810M 820M ....880M

910M 920M ....980M

In 2016, GeForce 920MX, 930MX, 940MX video cards appeared and they are 30 percent more productive than 920-940M, as well as GeForce GTX 1050, 1060, 1070, 1080 (they don't have M mobile) they are 2 times more productive than video cards 950-980 M.

Determination of power laptop processor and video card

Buying a laptop begins with viewing the models offered in stores. We offer a simple and fast way to determine the power of the processor and video card.

There is a website on the Internet PassMark http://www.passmark.comand there is a very large database of performance test results for all existing processors, video cards, as well as RAM and hard disk. Based on these tests, a performance index is derived. ToWe will show how to use the site using the example of choosing a laptop.

So, we have 2 laptops with the same price.

HP Pavilion 15-au107ur, Z3B14EA(with Intel Core i5 7200U processor)

Lenovo B5180, 80LM012URK(with Intel Core i5 6200U processor)

Let's check the processor performance evaluation.

We go to the site http://www.passmark.com and enter the model of the Intel Core i5 7200U processor installed on the HP Pavilion 15-au107ur laptop into the search box, click on the icon with the Magnifier (Search).

The page will openselect the line with the name of the desired processor Price performance comparison, here it is number 1 (but maybe not the first number) and click on it with the mouse.

In the window that opens, we see the average performance rating is 4725, and the average performance of one core is 1747 (by the way, the number of cores misleads some buyers, for example, the Pentium N3710 processor has four cores, but the performance rating of one core is 571).

We also see more information:

These processors have been tested on 281 laptops.

Minimum power consumption (TDP) 7.5 W.

Maximum power consumption ( TDP) 15W.

The year of appearance of laptops with this processor is 2016.

Let's check the performance index of the second processor, the actions are the same.

We enter in the search box the model of the Intel Core i5 6200U processor installed on the laptop Lenovo B5180 , click on the icon with a magnifying glass (Search).

A page will open, select the line with the name of the desired processor Price performance comparison and click on it with the mouse. 579 .

The year of appearance of laptops with this video card is 2016.

What games and on what settings will the video card of this or that laptop pull

performance evaluation hardware platform we have learned about our laptops and already have a real idea which is better and which is worse (despite the same price), but most users are also interested inwhat games and on what settings the video card of this or that laptop will pull. DTo do this, go to another site

In the left part of the window that opens, enter the name of the GeForce 940MX video card in the input field. In the right part of the window, select the game we are interested in from the list (I will choose Resident Evil) and click the "Show" button

Left click to enlarge screenshot

the result page will open. Pin terms of gaming performance, this video card ranks 182nd. M This is determined by all cards, not just mobile ones. We also see that 61% of users have played a Resident Evil game with 61 fps at low settings. 27.9 on medium and 15.2 on high.

In this window, you can select several games at once. Hold down the Ctrl key and highlight the games you are interested in, then click the "Show" button

We perform the same actions with the AMD Radeon R5 M330 video card.

P about performance in games, this video card takes only 337th place and unfortunately not tested with Resident Evil game.

This is how you can compare laptops offered in stores.

How to view performance scores on PassMark all parts of your laptop

We return to the site http://www.passmark.com

Select Benchmarks, then CPU Benchmarks.

Choose Laptop/Portable CPU Chart

In this list, you can find the processor you are interested in and compare its score with that of any other processor.

We compare video cards in the same way.

Performance ratings for components of a regular computer or laptop based on the PerformanceTest program

Users from all countries test their laptops and computers with this program and add test results to the database.

For example, I suggest testing an Acer Aspire E5-573G-31V3 laptop with an Intel Core i3 5005U processor and a GeForce 940M video card.

Download the program PerformanceTest.

Software-->PerformanceTest

Download Download Performance Test 9.

If you have an old operating system, then below you can download previous versions of the program.

We are installing the program.

The installation process is very simple, you just need to accept the license agreement.

Launching the program after installation.

Click on the Continue button.

If you want to test all the components of your computer or laptop at once (you can also separately), then click on the RUN BENCHMARK button.

RAM test. The bandwidth of the RAM is checked.

The program offers to enter the test results into its database.

The result (in the form of a report) will always be available via the link:

http://www.passmark.com/baselines/V9/display.php?id=73690558801

The main PassMark PerformanceTest window will also display the test results of each component in full detail, for example, click on the GPU MARK button and you will see all the tests performed on the processor.

In the program, you can compare the performance estimates of various models of computers and laptops. You don't have to test your car.

Run the program and click on the Manage Baselines icon

In the window that opens, click on Currently Selected.

The program offers to compare your estimate with the estimates of these models. We don’t need it now, so we clear the list (uncheck) and return to the search, click on the Simple Search button

You can search by processor, video card, disk and model. As an example, let's do a search by video card.

Enter the name of the video card in the input field, in my case - 940M and click on the button Search (Search).

and select several models (check them), click "Close",

Then we return to the main window of the program, press the PASSMARK button, then the button View chart and compare the selected models.

If you tested the video card of your laptop in the program PerformanceTest, then your result will also be displayed here.

I look forward to your questions about the article.

The processor is the real brain center of any computer. Today, CPUs can be found almost anywhere an integrated circuit is needed to execute software tasks. Can't work without this device. modern smartphone, PC, laptop. The global CPU market has divided all users into two camps. The processor industry is wholly owned by two giants producing microchip electronics - Intel and AMD. Between these two fires were all users. It is sometimes difficult to choose a worthwhile product from the provided assortment. The question is acute on the agenda: “Which microprocessor is considered the best in 2016?”

CPU Clock Speed: Myths and Misconceptions

Laptop processors from Intel have thoroughly taken control of the entire niche. If for desktop PCs AMD engineers can still offer customers a competitive product, then in the line of portable PCs everything is completely different. Intel's high-performance Core ix chips are loved by many. These devices are able to satisfy the wishes of the owners of budget and top models of laptops.

Many not quite experienced and enlightened users believe that the performance of a laptop directly depends on the CPU clock speed. This is a deep delusion. Different CPUs with the same clock speed will not necessarily cost the same. What is the secret? The cost of the Celeron P4600 with a frequency of 2GHz is ten times less than the price of the Core i7-820QM with a clock frequency of 1.73GHz. Everything is extremely simple - there are characteristics of the CPU that are more important than clock speed.

Advice. When buying a laptop, you should correctly determine the future purpose of the device. For gaming models in the budget and mid-price segment, AMD's Carrizo processors show the best graphics performance, for all other purposes devices based on Intel microprocessors have proven themselves better.

We decided that when buying a good laptop, the clock speed of the processor plays a secondary role. Clock frequency is an important parameter, but it will be incorrect to compare various models devices with the same frequency.

The number of cores is a key parameter of the processor

It is safe to say that today the era of multi-core machines reigns in the yard. The most popular among laptops are 2-core devices. This is the optimal solution for most users. Every day, manufacturers are trying to produce a new, improved product. So we can see that 4-core processors have been on sale for a long time. But the engineers of leading companies do not stop there. There are 12-core, 80-core chips. But for ordinary user such devices are not available, they are useless.

Advice. Not always large quantity cores plays into the hands. For example, during normal work on a laptop, for the purpose of editing text, browsing the Internet, for communicating in social networks and Skype will be enough for a 2-core machine. But this will not be enough to run a modern video game.

The computer processor market is occupied by two giants - Intel and AMD

It is necessary to understand for what purposes a laptop is purchased. It makes no sense to buy a computer with a 4-core processor for skype chatting and text editing in Microsoft Word. It will be an unreasonable and unnecessary overpayment of our own Money. For lovers computer games the optimal solution would be Core i7 and Phenom II. Ordinary 2-core machines here will not cope with the entire architectural load.

Cache memory and bit depth are performance contributors

The speed and performance of the system depends on the amount of cache memory and the bit depth of the microprocessor. Intel engineers were the first to succeed in this direction, thanks to the creation of a multi-level cache memory. In most cases, memory consists of three levels, which differ in their exchange rate.

The cache memory is designed in general to store a certain amount of information with subsequent exchange with the system. It is easier for the processor to exchange data with a multi-level cache. Bit depth also contributes to performance. Today we know about 32 and 64-bit mobile processors. The latter are more widespread, because such microcircuits are capable of processing twice as much information in one second.

Laptop performance - what is it and how to determine it?

Processor performance is a general characteristic of a computer. It can be easily identified given function built into all modern laptops. With the help of certain algorithms, the system draws conclusions based on the power of the processor, its clock frequency, the number of cores, the amount of cache memory, the amount of RAM. This procedure can be carried out using third-party resources.

Attention! Intel produces modern processors 2016 with a power that is 2 times the performance level modern devices from AMD. In the budget segment, the situation is exactly the opposite.

Here is a performance report of the best processors of 2016 from AMD and Intel:

  • Intel Core i5-2500K - 5820 points;
  • Intel Core i7-2600K - 6730 points;
  • AMD Phenom II X4 955 BE - 4310 points.

If you are interested in high performance, you should choose an Intel processor, low cost - AMD

Data based on 3DMark06 reporting. As you can see, devices from Intel in the top segment have no equal. Budget devices are another matter, 3DMark06 report:

  • Intel Pentium B970 - 2320;
  • AMD A6 3420M-2305.

The performance level of the AMD A6 3420M is slightly lower than that of its direct competitor. But this is an insignificant difference. However, these two devices differ significantly in price, as much as 15% percent of AMD products are cheaper than those from Intel.

Advantages and disadvantages of Intel and AMD processors

Summing up, we note that each device must be approached individually. Good laptop with a top-end processor will fit perfectly for some purposes, and will be completely inappropriate for simple tasks.

Advantages of processors for laptops from Intel:

  1. performance.
  2. Low power consumption.
  3. Focus on the majority modern applications and video games.
  4. Excellent interaction with RAM.

Advantages of AMD laptop processors:

  1. lower cost.
  2. Best performance/price ratio.
  3. Stable work.
  4. CPU overclocking by 20%.

At the same time, it is worth noting some shortcomings on both sides. Intel processors have far fewer cons than the competition, but the high prices of the latest generation of CPUs often scare away even the most dedicated Core ix fans. Devices from AMD have significant drawbacks: high power consumption, slow operation of second and third level cache memory, less stable operation with RAM. But low prices make many people opt for AMD.
