All netbooks asus eee ps seashell series. ASUS EEE PC? personal digital assistant

The development of netbooks does not stand still, but now to a greater extent there is a desire of companies to distinguish their brainchild from the general mass, which is gradually developing into a kind of “market wars”. Almost every company that has started producing netbooks has some unique model that attracts attention. Likewise, the company ASUS, whose products we paid attention to this time, recently presented an updated line of Eee PC netbooks, the design of which is directly related to nature, or more precisely, to mother-of-pearl sea shells. Actually, this is where the second name of the series comes from – Seashell.

In this review, we will look at one of the netbooks of the new line, namely the ASUS Eee PC 1008HA Seashell.

The netbook is based on the Intel Atom N280 processor, which is the main one for this category mobile devices. The processor is manufactured using 45 nm technology and provides the minimum required performance, operating at a frequency of 1660 MHz with an FSB of 667 MHz. There is support for technologies such as Execute Disable Bit, Enhanced Intel Speedstep and Intel Hyper-Threading.

The Mobile Intel 945GSE chipset used in the netbook is designed specifically to support low-power processors. This chipset has a low-power integrated Intel GMA 950 video adapter, and also supports the use of single-channel DDR2-400/533 memory with a maximum capacity of up to 2 GB. To support internal devices and peripherals, four PCI Express x1 ports, up to 8 USB 2.0 ports and two SATA ports are used. Optionally, a network controller can be installed that provides support for connections at a speed of 1 Gbps, as well as an Intel High Definition Audio chip and support for Intel Active Management Technology, which provides new methods for managing remote clients for business applications.

Supply

The ASUS Eee PC 1008HA netbook is delivered in a single package with beautiful design. The sides are painted white and light green. You can find one like this on them useful information as a brief technical specification, a list of possible color variations and several logos of supported technologies. The title sides have a more varied design. So on the front there is an image of sea sand, on which the netbook itself is located next to a sea shell, thereby emphasizing the exclusivity of the design. The opposite side shows the netbook in an open state. For ease of transportation, a special handle is provided.

Equipment

The netbook's equipment is quite standard for devices of this class, i.e. It contains only essential items. Thus, in the package, in addition to the ASUS Eee PC 1008HA netbook, we found:

  • user guide;
  • warranty card;
  • cloth for wiping the display;
  • DVD with drivers and utilities;
  • power unit;
  • cable for connecting the power supply to a 220 V network;
  • special case.

A special case allows you to protect your netbook during hikes from unwanted environmental influences. It is quite simple and has nothing superfluous. The outer part of the case is made of black suede fabric, while the inside uses a softer material, somewhat similar to foam rubber, also black in color. The position of the netbook in the case is fixed with a zipper, thereby preventing it from accidentally falling out.

Appearance and ergonomics

The design of the ASUS Eee PC1008HA netbook instantly attracts attention due to its characteristic design, reminiscent of a beautiful sea shell. Indeed, ASUS Eee PC1008HA has a sleek, rounded body, with a fairly light weight, only about 1 kg. In addition, the maximum thickness is 2.5 cm, which makes it one of the thinnest netbooks available. The color scheme is quite catchy – it’s pearlescent pink. Additional elegance is given by the use of a glossy finish, which, unfortunately, causes minor complaints in terms of practicality. Note that there are other color options: white, ruby red, blue, black and sapphire blue.

Opening the netbook does not present any special problems - you just need to lift the lid with little effort. In addition, the matter is facilitated by the small protrusion provided on its edge. The interior of the netbook is white and almost entirely glossy, with the exception of the keyboard.

There are no connectors, indicators or keys on the front side.

On right side there is a dual-format card reader that works with memory cards (SD (SDHC) and MMC), and there are also several connectors here, namely one USB 2.0 connector, two mini-jack connectors (headphones/microphone) and a connector for local network RJ-45. All connectors are covered with plastic plugs.

There is also a plastic cap on the left side; it covers one USB 2.0 connector and a mini-VGA connector for connecting an external monitor using a mini-VGA to VGA adapter. There was also a place for a DC-in connector for connecting the power adapter and for a small ventilation hole.

In the center of the back there are two indicators that display the status of connection to the network and battery charging.

The bottom of the netbook has several design features. One of these features lies in the absence of a battery compartment, which at first was a little alarming, but the fear quickly passed, because The battery is already installed and located inside the case. The second feature is a special seat for an adapter from mini-VGA to VGA, which is additionally fixed with a magnet. There was also room on the bottom for several stickers with important information and a pair of ventilation holes.

Matrix, input devices, camera, webcam

To display images, a 10.1" wide-format TFT matrix is used, equipped with LED backlighting, which significantly increases the quality of the image, in particular due to increased contrast. The presence of a glossy coating prevents the image from fading in the sun, but at the same time, it is prone to characteristic glare. The maximum display resolution for comfortable work is 1024 x 600 (WSVGA), although it is possible to set the resolution to a slightly higher height - 1024 x 768 (XGA). This resolution may seem somewhat impractical due to the constant need to scroll the image. But when working with programs whose window sizes exceed 600 pixels in height, it becomes more than necessary.Among other features of the display, it is worth noting the presence of proprietary technologies, such as Color-Shine, which improve image quality, a wide range of backlight brightness adjustments and fairly good viewing angles.

On the edge above the display there is a fixed 1.3-megapixel webcam module and a microphone array that provides high quality sound when talking over the Internet.

The keyboard of the ASUS Eee PC 1008HA netbook is standard for modern devices ASUS, but significantly different from previous models of the Eee series, and I’m glad that it’s for the better, although not without complaints. There are not many of the latter, and they only relate to the arrow block, the keys of which require getting used to. Otherwise, the keyboard is very convenient to work with. The keys are flat and quite large with a slight roughness, which ensures good contact with the fingers. I am also pleased with the application of the symbols; they are clearly distinguishable and perfectly readable. Thus, light green color is used for the Cyrillic alphabet, black is used for the Latin alphabet, and blue is used for functional symbols. In addition, all symbols are very clearly visible when backlit. By the way, an interesting and useful aspect of the keyboard is the functional transfer of changing the display resolution to the key and quick access to the task manager to the key.

On the left above the keyboard, almost at the very edge, there are two paired keys that allow you to enable Bluetooth and Wi-Fi wireless modules and disable the touchpad.

The power button of the netbook is located symmetrically on the right; it is metal and with LED backlight.

Above the keyboard, in the center of the hinge of the netbook lid, there is a block of indicators that displays: battery charge status, hard drive access, wireless network activity and Caps Lock activity.

The installed touchpad supports the multi-tap function, which makes it possible to instantly zoom. The touchpad is quite comfortable to work with; it has good sensitivity, the ability to scroll vertically and horizontally, as well as a textured surface to ensure better contact. The only thing I don't like is the small area of the touch panel. Under touch panel There are two standard keys made of a solid metal plate.

Acoustics

The speakers of the acoustic system are located at the front bottom behind the grille, which is why in some situations there may be minor complaints about the quality and volume of the sound. To a greater extent, they will depend directly on the location of the netbook. Although, in general, the speakers are very high quality and are capable of reproducing fairly clear sound without distortion even with maximum volume, which, by the way, is quite high.

Power supply and battery

The netbook is connected to the network using the AD6630 power supply (30 W, 19 V, 2.1 A), which is manufactured by ASUS. During operation, significant heating of the power supply is noticeable only when recharging the batteries, and the rest of the time it is in a warm position.

For battery life The netbook uses a 3-cell lithium-polymer battery, as mentioned above, located inside the case.

Testing

To carry out this stage, we selected several popular test packages that allow us to objectively evaluate the performance of all components of the netbook. We compared the test results with market leaders:

  • We express our gratitude to the company PF Service LLC (Dnepropetrovsk) for providing the netbook for testing.

There is currently no shortage of netbooks on the market, but from time to time models appear that are significantly ahead of others in their characteristics - both external and internal. One of these models is this (i.e. “shell”), which on this moment some call it the best netbook on the market. It is thin and light, and there are quite good components inside, so it is well worth its price.

Appearance, quality of materials

The Eee PC 1008HA Seashell brings a completely new design to the ASUS Eee PC family of netbooks. As the name suggests, the shape of the case is somewhat reminiscent of a shell, and it brings freshness and personality to its design. All ports are closed with plugs, which serve more of a decorative than a protective role. ASUS claims that the thickness of this version of the Eee PC does not exceed 2.5 cm at its thickest point, but it is tactfully silent about the legs that are on the bottom of this netbook. So the maximum thickness is still greater, but this does not change the fact that the 1008HA still stands out significantly from the crowd with its thin and light body.

Once again, ASUS has done everything to surprise both users and us, the review authors, with the build quality of the Eee PC line. Glossy black plastic practically does not bend, and the keyboard is as durable as best models business class. All parts of the body fit perfectly together and are secured together with careful attention to detail. ASUS claims that the plastic used in the Eee PC 1008HA has a special "Infusion" coating that makes this netbook scratch-resistant. During the test, I did not have the opportunity to scratch this case with anything, but one thing is for sure - the glossy case, like a magnet, attracts fingerprints, and after just a few minutes of use this brand new netbook takes on a slightly dirty look. The 1008HA is also available in white, blue and pink, so we strongly advise against buying the black one.

The 1008HA features an updated keyboard design that is now 92% the size of the standard keyboard, which is a big improvement over the old, clunky Eee PC series keyboards. The Synaptics touchpad is quite large for a netbook. And if ASUS has made some sacrifices in terms of design, it is only in order to make the 1008HA as thin and light as possible. We'll come back to this a little later.

Display

The new Eee PC 1008HA Seashell uses a standard and long-known LED-backlit panel with a resolution of 1024x600. The screen's glossy finish helps improve color and contrast, but glare and reflections—whether indoors in bright light or outdoors in direct sunlight—can be a real problem. And, despite the fact that the resolution of 1024x600 compared to 800x480 in older models is very good, I am still disappointed that it is not higher on the Eee PC 1008HA. Other manufacturers, such as HP and Dell, already offer netbooks with a resolution of 1366x768.

Vertical viewing angles are at an average level - when viewed from below and above, the image is slightly distorted. Horizontal viewing angles are better, and therefore this display shows a normal picture at sufficiently large angles, so that if you watch a video in a group, everyone will be able to see everything perfectly.

Input Devices

As mentioned earlier, the 1008HA features a new keyboard that is 92% the size of the standard one. The keys are slightly smaller than on standard laptop, but if you like the shape and feel of regular keys, then you'll definitely like this keyboard. But personally, I prefer the keyboard used on the ASUS Eee PC 1000HE, since there is more distance between the keys, and therefore it is easier to avoid typing errors. But still, this particular keyboard is very comfortable, and it is quite possible to type quickly on it. emails or edit documents while traveling.

The Synaptics touchpad used in the 1008HA allows you to apply specific finger movements to, for example, zoom in or out of an image. And to simulate a click right click The mouse can be used by clicking with three fingers at once. The Synaptics control panel in Windows allows you to create your own finger gestures for a variety of actions. The touchpad's surface is covered in small dots that help you figure out where its edges end, but they also make the surface rough, making it difficult to move your fingers quickly. The left and right keys are combined into one “rocker”, and it’s quite easy to accidentally press its middle part instead of the desired one - left or right. The touchpad keys have a fairly soft return motion, so it's often difficult to tell whether you've pressed them or not.

ASUS has also included a number of separate switch keys and shortcut keys into the netbook, which will make working on the netbook easier. This is to turn on/off the wireless module, touchpad, as well as a combination with the FN key to change screen brightness, volume, etc.

Ports

In terms of the number of ports, the Eee PC 1008HA is no different from other netbooks.

Front: no ports

Rear: hinges and battery indicator

Left: power input, VGA, USB, ventilation grille

Right: card reader, USB, microphone, headphones and Ethernet.

The operation of the VGA port is quite curiously organized, which is the same as the USB-to-video ports on digital cameras. To ensure an exceptionally slim design, this port is tucked inside the netbook, and the VGA adapter is stored in a special compartment on the bottom. You can take it out when you need it, or put it away when you don’t.

Performance

Of course, when it comes to netbook performance testing, it's impossible to get impressive results. Moreover, it is also worth noting that all models based on the Intel Atom processor show almost identical performance. It is quite enough for surfing the Internet, Email, creation and editing Microsoft documents Office, listening to music and watching movies. You can even do some light image editing in programs like Photoshop or GIMP.

ASUS has also included an exclusive app that allows you to downgrade clock frequency processor to extend battery life and overclock it from 1.66 to 1.7 GHz.

If the Eee PC 1008HA has any performance issues, it's due to the special VGA connector, which is USB-to-VGA and is therefore slower than the regular video output. If you use an external display, be prepared for graphics performance to be lower than other netbooks, even though almost all netbooks use the same integrated Intel GMA 950 graphics card. Basically, If you just connect an external monitor to edit text in Word, show a presentation in PowerPoint, or watch a regular video format (DVD quality), then the performance will be quite sufficient. But if you play video in 720p and 1080p format, then it is clearly not enough.

HDTune (CPU test):

Audio

The quality of the Eee PC 1008HA's built-in speakers is quite good for a 10-inch device. I'm not a fan of their placement (in the lower front corner), but even I admit that they sound quite good. They have excellent volume levels (enough to fill a small room with sound), and even at maximum volume, distortion is minimal. Of course, the bass is lacking, but the mids and highs are quite good.

Of course, advanced users will still use external speakers or headphones. And the sound they produce is simply excellent.

Temperature and noise

The case heating of the Eee PC Seashell does not exceed comfortable values, which was made possible thanks to the use of the Intel Atom processor and the thoughtful design of the case. During normal work, the netbook can be held on your lap. The only time the case gets hot is when you attach an external display.

This small, shell-shaped netbook remained fairly quiet during our tests, making the 1008HA one of the quietest netbooks out there. But, of course, it would be better if it made noise, but also cooled better when an external display is connected.

Here are the case temperatures that were measured when connecting a monitor with a resolution of 1280x1024. In its absence, the bottom temperature did not rise above 35.5 degrees Celsius.

Autonomous operation

The battery life of this 3-cell lithium-polymer battery is quite impressive considering this is a small travel laptop. In our test, we set the screen brightness to 70%, turned on the wireless network and enabled a special profile in XP for offline operation. In this state, the netbook worked for 6 hours and 36 minutes. Of course, it is a little confusing that the battery cannot be removed or replaced, or a larger capacity battery cannot be installed, but such time frames are quite sufficient, so this may not be necessary.

conclusions

At first glance, the ASUS Eee PC 1008HA Seashell may not seem like some kind of extraordinary netbook. Indeed, plenty of other devices share the same processor, graphics, and standard 10-inch display, so there's not much opportunity for it to stand out from the crowd.

However, even though the 1008HA lacks a little performance, its main advantage is not that, but some finishing touches. The thin and light design, exceptional battery life and near-full-size keyboard make the Seashell a very attractive laptop for travel. If you are willing to overlook the inability to change the battery and poor performance in terms of HD video, then the 1008HA is a great choice for you.

Fine:
- thin and light
- exceptional battery life
- interesting built-in VGA adapter

Badly:
- built-in battery
- poor VGA performance in terms of HD video
- bad touchpad keys

Asus Eee PC is a very interesting product from the point of view of its positioning in the electronic devices market. It belongs to a rather specific class of devices, occupying an intermediate position on the market between ultra-mobile (with a 10-12-inch matrix) laptops and PDAs. In general, this market is inhabited by a fairly large number of the most different devices, including web tablets, small devices with a 5-7 inch screen and pull-out keyboards (UMPC), various monofunctional devices (for example, GPS navigators or e-readers), etc. The main characteristics for devices in this segment are dimensions and weight on one side they are pressed universal laptops with screen sizes of 10 inches and above, where you can already place an almost fully functional keyboard, on the other PDAs, which, although not so functional (in particular, have a fairly small screen), but can be carried in a pocket or a small case on the belt.

Figuratively speaking, products in this sector are aimed at users who need small and light electronic device, so that they can carry it with them all the time, and at the same time they are not satisfied with the functionality of a PDA or the portability of a small laptop. The problem is that the circle of such buyers is quite narrow; the majority are quite happy with a PDA or a laptop (or both devices together). Therefore, the main circle of buyers is a narrow niche of enthusiasts who actively use various mobile gadgets, or an equally narrow category of professional users who need such devices for work. And since the sales volume is small, it is difficult to recoup the costs of development and organization of production. Therefore, almost all devices in this market niche are relatively expensive and have a poor price-functionality ratio, which further reduces their consumer appeal.

ASUS Eee PC, aimed specifically at this market segment, has two very important features that make it unique: firstly, it is positioned not as a niche, but as a mass device, and secondly, it has a fairly low price.

What makes the Eee PC unique is that ASUS is trying to bring to market a model that is versatile and simple enough to satisfy the basic needs of non-professional users, and at the same time extremely cheap. Only a fairly wealthy person who does not count money can afford to buy the same web tablet for $2,000, when it is quite possible to do without it. And at a price of $300, you can buy such a device by simply going to the store to do some shopping - it will still be “useful around the house.” And the Eee PC is practically a fully functional laptop.

And here we come to the main thing why ASUS’s marketing was so successful. The company announced at a very early stage that the retail price of the Eee PC would be just $199, which is what almost anyone is willing to pay for a computer that can perform all the basic tasks assigned to it. The power of marketing is so great that to this day one of the synonyms for the Eee PC has become “a $199 laptop.”

Of course, in life everything turned out to be not so rosy; prices at the beginning of sales ranged from 350 to 500 dollars, even in the USA, where such electronics are traditionally inexpensive. However, even for this money, a functional alternative to the Eee PC is only some old models of used ultraportable laptops, imported from countries where there is generally a demand for them (in Europe, for example, the volume of this market is minimal).

ASUS Eee PC

Externally, ASUS Eee PC is extremely reminiscent of old ASUS models, S200 and S300. At one time, ASUS had a whole line of such devices and supported them on the market, although the market niche for them was not very large. You can read reviews of these models on our website:, S300. By the way, it’s worth taking a closer look at the “representation” of the Eee PC on the Internet.

Internet resources

Long before its release, ASUS Eee PC had a fairly large army of people who liked the device and were looking forward to its release.

ASUS has created a special website to support the Eee PC; it is located at the third level in the asus.com– domain. Here you can find out basic information about the device, select the model you are interested in, and also get support or download necessary drivers and programs.

In the English-speaking segment of the Internet there are quite a lot of sites dedicated to the Eee PC, for example,. This site contains a lot of interesting information about the model, there are also forums. There is also a similar Russian site. A Russian-speaking community dedicated to the Eee PC is also associated with this site; it is located here http://community.livejournal.com/eeepc/.

Finally, don't forget about our forum. There is a fairly voluminous thread dedicated to the Eee PC. In it you can read discussions of the model, and ways to solve emerging questions and problems with installing additional programs and devices.

As you can see, the Eee PC has a fairly serious presence on the Internet. Well, let's take a look at the model that we tested.

ASUS Eee PC case

So, let's take a look at our Eee PC.

The first thing that surprises is that at such a stated price, the case does not at all give the impression of being cheap; the plastic of the case is of quite high quality. Moreover, the Eee PC is available in several colors! We tested the “white mother-of-pearl” option; this Eee PC has a completely white body with a mother-of-pearl tint. There is also a fairly common black version. In addition, ASUS offers several “color” options with covers made in various pastel colors green, blue, pink... The design is not far behind it is made in a much more high level than you'd expect from a budget model. Beveled edges, a round central part, a silver insert near the touchpad, a battery integrated into the design of the case - everything is done to a good standard.

True, due to the cheaper design, we had to resort to some tricks. So, instead of big screen a screen with a larger diagonal, probably 9 inches, could fit into the case; the screen installed is only 7 inches. By the way, it should appear on the market soon enough new model Eee PC, where a screen with a larger diagonal will be installed.

To fit the small display into the case, another (black) frame is inserted into the white frame. It also houses the laptop's speakers. This arrangement is convenient because the sound goes directly to the viewer. But the speakers are very quiet, it’s difficult to use them in any noisy room, and the sound quality is poor. At any time active work With sound you have to connect headphones. The frame itself does not look very good in combination with the white color, and the small screen in a large body creates the feeling of a budget model.

Of course, the main attention in such a model is paid to weight and size parameters. The case dimensions are very modest: 22.5 × 16.4 × 2.15~3.5 cm. Specification weight 0.92 kg, the weight of our laptop with battery is 1050 grams. In this indicator, the Eee PC outperforms even a paper diary. As a convenient multifunctional notebook this laptop will look very good.

By the way, the Eee PC has an interesting included power supply. It looks like a power supply from mobile phone, and not from a laptop - small and plugged directly into the outlet. The power supply unit has a universal plug onto which an adapter for sockets in different countries can be attached.

It’s worth mentioning the included case as well; the Eee PC can be carried without the risk of being scratched.

The laptop has built-in speakers (albeit small), a microphone and a webcam with a resolution of 0.3 megapixels, as well as an output for external headphones and a microphone input it is quite suitable for conveniently conducting web conferences and calls over the Internet (this is an option, it was present in our sample ). The package already includes Skype.

Connectors, housing layout

As for expandability, the laptop is very well equipped for its size, positioning and price. Firstly, it has three USB 2.0 connectors, which is enough for almost all occasions, for example, you can connect a flash drive and an external mouse and keyboard. EeePC also has a standard VGA output; when working on a desk, you can connect a large external monitor, and “away”, you can connect a projector, for example, for making a presentation yourself.

The EeePC has a card reader for SD/MMC format cards; it can be used both for working with flash drives (for example, for a camera) and for increasing the laptop’s own memory; the card can easily be used as an additional drive.

To connect to networks, the laptop has a port for a wired network and Wi-Fi. The model we tested does not have a modem. Also no Bluetooth interface, which could be used, for example, to communicate with a telephone, but then the model would become even more expensive...

Let's take a closer look at how the connectors are located on the laptop body.

There is nothing on the front edge, only indicators.

On the left there is a network connector, a plug instead of a modem connector, USB port, ventilation grille, audio jacks. Everything is conveniently located.

On the right is a card reader, two more USB ports, an output for an external monitor or projector, and a Kensington lock.

By the way, pay attention to the contours of the case; from these angles you can see its real thickness. The beveled corners detract from the size, making the Eee PC appear even thinner than it actually is.

On the back there is only a power connector.

Bottom of the laptop. In the last two photos, pay attention to the location of the battery in the case; it is largely responsible for both the weight and thickness of the laptop.

The indicators, as already mentioned, are located on the right front edge of the keyboard panel and are made in the form of LEDs located under special holes in the case. There are 4 of them in total: operation, battery status, access to the hard drive, WiFi status. When working, laptops are blocked by the wrist of the right hand and are not visible.

Model specifications, configuration

The Eee PC is built on Intel's new mobile platform, aimed at low-cost laptops and gadgets. Processor Celeron 900 ULV, runs at reduced voltage. According to current information, the processor operates at 630 MHz in standard mode, due to which it has very good power consumption and heating indicators. Perhaps in new BIOS versions it will be possible to enable the maximum operating mode (at the required 900 MHz). In general, the Eee PC does not work very quickly, this is especially noticeable when starting and loading applications. However, during office work this is not annoying.

The Intel 910GML platform with integrated GMA900 graphics, although quite old, has good performance even by modern standards, and its “obsolete” status allows it to set an attractive price.

The amount of installed RAM depends on the model. In the “younger model” and, according to available information, in all surf models, this memory is soldered directly into motherboard and cannot be upgraded. In 4G and 8G models, you can rearrange the modules yourself; the connector allows this. However, to do this you need to open the case, or rather a special hatch. And there is a seal on this hatch. ASUS initially stated that damage to the label would void the warranty. For some countries (USA, UK, etc.), clarifications have been issued that you can open the hatch and replace the memory yourself, and this does not void the warranty of the entire device. For Russia, it is not yet clear whether this is true or not.

The situation with “ hard drive" In all ASUS models Eee PC uses SSD memory analogue flash, seemingly different big amount read-write cycles (flash memory fails after a certain, although sufficiently large quantity recording cycles). The memory can either be soldered directly onto the device board, or inserted as a module into a PCIe slot, where it can be upgraded or replaced. Size varies 2, 4 or 8 GB, upgradeable only in 8G model. In principle, even 8 GB is very little for a computer, especially with installed windows system. However, the Eee PC is still unlikely to be the only computer; it should rather work in tandem with a larger computer or laptop so it is better to store all the information there, and load onto the Eee PC only what is needed on the road. In addition to the built-in disk, it is quite possible to use external storage with a USB interface, or buy an additional flash memory card and insert it into the Eee PC card reader.

As standard, the Eee PC has a connector for a 10/100 Mbit wired network and a wireless network card that supports 802.11B/G standards. Both use Atheros chipsets. There is no modem (although there is a plug on the case; perhaps the modem will be available as an option in other models). No Bluetooth either. I would like to have this wireless interface, but this would definitely lead to an increase in the cost of the design, and besides, we should not forget that Bluetooth is a closed standard, unlike Wi-Fi.

Finally, here is a table where all the technical characteristics are brought together different models Eee PC.

Operating the Eee PC

The key characteristic of the Eee PC is that it is small. This has its pros and cons.

The small keyboard allows you to type with only two fingers. All the keys are the same size, so if you get used to it, there aren’t too many misses. Personally, this printing mode still seems extremely inconvenient to me, but colleagues who do not know touch typing have a different opinion: typing is only slightly more inconvenient than on a large laptop, but the size and weight make the Eee PC an ideal choice for business trips, so when If possible, they would definitely buy such a device.

The screen also seemed too small to me; for example, too few lines are displayed in a word processor, making it inconvenient to type and edit text. In addition, our version did not support the Russian language at all. The widescreen screen has a non-standard resolution of 800x480 pixels; it requires its own driver (this is especially true when installing Windows yourself).

The Eee PC has a flaw that is, to one degree or another, common to almost all ultra-compact laptops. The heaviest part of the case is the battery, and it is located under the matrix. The Eee PC still stands quite confidently on the table, but when you hold it on your lap and open the matrix to the maximum angle, the laptop wants to tip back.

During the operation of the Eee RS, there were no problems with noise. I personally still don’t understand whether it has a fan or not, but on the Internet opinions are divided. The downside of silence is heating - the case heats up quite noticeably even in standard office mode. After an hour and a half, the laptop was noticeably warm. The palm rests and the bottom of the laptop in the middle also become warmer.

The software part of the Eee PC is based on a reworked version of Xandros Linux - a rather exotic distribution. To perform some functions fine tuning The operating system needs to perform non-trivial actions. Out of the box, the number of settings for the system’s operation is minimal: output to an external monitor, its resolution, two energy saving settings—that’s probably all that’s interesting.

Working in “office” mode in principle does not cause problems. The Eee PC starts up quickly enough and responds to actions (for example, launching new applications), although with a delay, but not critical. In general, it is usually not annoying.

One of the “jokes” that can be noted (by the way, the same thing was practiced with the S200) is that the recovery system is written to a CD when the Eee PC does not have a drive. So system recovery is possible only if there is external drive either a laptop or computer.

Operation programs and Eee PC shell

The EeePC does not come with the market's traditional Windows laptop, but with the option of a free Linux OS simplified assembly of Xandros Linux (however, now there seems to be no delivery option with Windows).

The laptop has a fairly simple and functional software shell for calling required applications. The shell has several tabs in which programs are grouped by functionality:

Internet applications (browser, Skype, mail, messenger, Internet radio),

applications for work (all Open Office, dictionary, file manager and other applications),

programs for training (a set of some utilities, for example, the periodic table of elements, planetarium, other applications for students),

entertainment (games, media player, catalogers for music, photos and videos), application for webcam and sound recording.

A separate tab is allocated for favorite applications.

In general, the shell is quite convenient for the niche “between a laptop and a PDA”; applications are conveniently sorted and easy to find.

Ease of use personal opinion

In my opinion, the Eee PC is too small to be comfortable to use all the time. This is a device for traveling and traveling, when you can “do something”, but you don’t have to do anything seriously. In this niche he looks quite confident.

In any activity, the Eee PC is a compromise option. The keyboard is too small, you can only type on it with two fingers. The screen resolution is enough to view email or briefly work with text, but when trying to do something more serious, the lack of screen space is a big hindrance. It seems that a model with a larger screen size and resolution will be more convenient for constant work, especially since there is room even in this case. In general, theoretically you can do everything on the Eee PC, but in practice it is inconvenient for serious work. Although “clicking”, surfing ICQ or the Internet, or looking at a cheat sheet at a performance is quite an option.

Due to the fact that the laptop does not have a hard drive, it is insensitive to vibrations and shocks and can easily work, for example, in a car. This is a big plus specifically for a traveling device - all sorts of troubles can happen on the road, which HDD may not survive.

Since we're talking about traveling, it's worth saying a few words about the battery. During testing there was a model with big battery, 5200 mAh. From it the laptop worked for 3 hours in reading mode (i.e. with one running application and off wireless interfaces). For a short trip or traveling, this battery life is enough, but you shouldn’t count on a full day of work “on battery” with the Eee PC.

Positioning

The ASUS Eee PC is not a laptop, but rather an all-in-one personal digital assistant as it should be - more convenient than a PDA and smaller than a full-featured laptop.

It is unsuitable for constant everyday work, so it is hardly worth positioning it as a student laptop or a laptop for poor users; in this case, it will turn out to be the only computer and will not cope with all the variety of tasks that fall on it. And in order for it to be at least somehow convenient to use, you will have to purchase an external keyboard, mouse and monitor, which will significantly increase the price. The Eee PC doesn't even have an external optical drive. So if we are talking about a single computer, it is better to buy budget laptop costing about $800, which already has everything you need.

But the Eee PC is a good addition to a main desktop computer or a large laptop that is difficult to carry around with you all the time. It is convenient to take it with you on short trips and business trips. It is lightweight, takes up almost no space and is quite suitable for passing the time - review (and slightly edit) a document or presentation, check email, surf the Internet, and finally play a little.

The Eee PC can be used in a bunch of other cases, for example, chatting briefly in ICQ, talking to someone via Skype (especially since it’s included in the software), using the Eee PC as a handset, reading something at home before bed etc. By the way, when discussing the Eee PC at our conference, another application was proposed - as a small laptop for setting up and testing the operation of various industrial and server equipment. He would also be quite at home in this role.

Finally, it is worth mentioning separately a very special category of users who may like the EeePC - women. A small, light and elegant toy that easily fits into a handbag and is capable of performing the vast majority of tasks of an undemanding user: Internet, mail, communication, working with documents. Plus, the Eee PC is nice looking.

At the same time, it seemed that thanks to the announced low price of the EeePC, the user would not even have to rack his brain as to whether it would be useful or not; such a purchase could well be made under the influence of the impulse “I liked it!”

Price

Unfortunately, the situation with the price turned out to be a little different than expected. From a marketing point of view, everything is very cool; publications still use “Eee PC” and “$199 laptop” as synonyms. But in reality, everything is not very good even in the USA, with their affordable prices, models with normal characteristics cost $400 this is not much lower than the price for a “full-size”, albeit very cheap, laptop. Because of this, the Eee PC is dangerously close in cost to cheap laptops, to which it will clearly lose in functionality if a poor user buys his main and only laptop “for the household.” However, even for a “gadget” the difference between 200 and 400 dollars is quite significant, and already makes the buyer think, “do we need this joke?”

Therefore, at the moment, it is more likely that the new product will not be an “ultra-cheap laptop for low-income users,” but another gadget that complements a laptop or desktop computer, and will be of interest mainly to users traditionally interested in this kind of gizmos. Perhaps it will be interesting as a “buy as a gift”, but again, it’s one thing to buy a gift for 200 dollars, another for 400. Moreover, users who are not particularly familiar with computers and are accustomed to Windows are almost the operating room will probably scare you away Linux system with the proposed shell (although in general it is quite convenient)..

At the moment, the Eee PC will most likely be sold only through the Eldorado retail chain; the average price for a 4G model should be about 10-11 thousand rubles (on sale the model goes for 9999 rubles). The preliminary announced price for the 9th series of Eee PC, which should appear in the summer, is about 400 euros.

Conclusion

EeePC occupies an intermediate niche between a laptop and a PDA. This is a good addition to another computer, a convenient way to do a little work or while away time on trips, business trips and short business visits. With some additions, the EeePC almost matches the functionality of ultraportable laptops, but costs less.

However, at current prices and positioning, the EeePC most likely will not become super popular, and it will remain a niche product for gadget lovers who need just such a hybrid.

When switching to a new one Intel platform Pine Trail ASUS decided to use a proven scheme and installed fresh hard hardware into the already beloved Eee PC 1005 series case, resulting in a device called ASUS Eee PC 1005PE, which we will look at today. Externally, the new product is not much different from its predecessor 1005HA, but thanks to the new economical platform, it can boast, as the manufacturer assures, eleven hours of battery life.

Design and construction features

Model 1005PE is made in the best traditions of ASUS Seashell netbooks. A thin, wedge-shaped body, tapering towards the front end, making the laptop seem even thinner than it actually is; all lines are smooth and flowing, without sharp transitions. The sample we tested had a classic black glossy finish. However, devices are also produced with blue, white and pink glossy surfaces, as well as with several types of matte coatings, which are decorated with textures with geometric patterns.

Unfortunately, we were not able to hold the matte 1005PE in our hands, as it is less common than the glossy versions, but you can be sure that this option will be much more resistant to fingerprints. The glossy model, although it looks beautiful, is covered with fingerprints instantly. Only the lower matte part of the case remains untouched. It would be worth making the frame around the display, which you touch when opening the netbook, from the same plastic.

The screen is attached to the body by two small external curtains, which do not do a very good job of holding the display in a fixed position. If this does not cause any particular difficulties when working at a desk, then, for example, in a moving vehicle the lid of the netbook will twitch.

The case, despite its small thickness, turned out to be very durable. When pressed, the panels do not bend, there are no backlashes or creaks in the joints when torsioned. But the netbook's lid, on the contrary, turned out to be very weak. It bends easily and creaks slightly when you press the frame.

All LED indicators are located in the lower right corner of the working surface, which is why they are slightly covered by the right hand when working. Indicators for system status and battery charge level are duplicated on the front end so that they can be distinguished even when the netbook lid is closed.

The battery in the 1005PE is part of a panel that sits above the keyboard. It’s nice that with a standard 4400 mAh battery (which cannot be called very capacious), the device does not look thick.

At the bottom of the case there is a small window for access to the only RAM slot. Since there is only one slot, you cannot add another RAM stick, you can only change it. However, not every 2GB memory stick will do. On the manufacturer's official website there is a list of RAM modules recommended for installation, and we would not recommend deviating from it, as this may cause a conflict in the system. Before installing a new memory stick, it is better to first make sure whether it will work in this model.

Input Devices

The 1005PE netbook, unlike its predecessor, has an aesthetically pleasing keyboard with island-style keys (which have noticeable spaces between them). The keyboard has a standard layout and a typical button size for such devices - 14x14 mm. Already the rest are only keys with navigation arrows.

The positive thing is that there are two Fn keys. The right Fn key is located in the area of navigation arrows and allows you to quickly and conveniently work with text navigation buttons, which are designed as functional ones and combined with arrows.

The keys have a short stroke and a clear actuation moment, which has a positive effect on typing. The downside of this ergonomic keyboard is that it flexes too much when pressed. When typing dynamically, the background actually “walks.” This disadvantage occasionally found in mobile computers ASUS.

The touchpad is made in the same plane as the working surface and is distinguished only by pimples. So you can find it by touch. It is comfortable and convenient for your fingers to glide over such a surface.

The touch panel supports multi-finger input, which allows you to scroll, zoom and rotate the image. Multi-touch makes working with the 1005PE much easier. The benefits of this feature are especially noticeable in small devices such as netbooks. It is also worth recommending using latest version drivers, as it significantly expands multi-touch capabilities.

Display

There is no revolution in the information display system. The model uses a 10.1-inch HannStar matrix with a physical resolution of 1024x600 pixels and LED backlighting. I liked that the manufacturer used a matte display coating, which is more tolerant of increased ambient light. Thanks to matte screen The 1005PE is very comfortable to work with in a well-lit classroom and outdoors in sunlight.

We were not very pleased with the maximum display brightness we measured - 166 cd/m2. At the same time, the illumination uniformity was about 80%. Probably, thanks to the low brightness, the manufacturer managed to achieve deep blacks, which allowed the contrast ratio to reach 348:1. Of course, these indicators cannot be called excellent, but the quality of the matrix will be just right for a device of this class.

Interfaces and expansion ports

It will not be a surprise that the set of interfaces in the 1005PE is no different from the standard arsenal of netbooks. And they are located only on the right and left ends, as in 1005HA.

On the right side there is a pair of USB 2.0 ports, an RJ-45 network connector (Atheros AR8132 controller), a card reader for SD/MMC memory cards, as well as a pair of 3.5 mm audio jacks for connecting headphones and a microphone. On the left side there is a connector for the power supply, an analog D-Sub video output, a third USB 2.0 port and a security lock slot.

The ports are distributed evenly and are located at a sufficient distance from each other so that bulky plugs can be connected to them.

Wireless Wi-Fi network in this device is implemented using the Atheros AR9285 Wireless controller, which supports more new standard 802.11n. The Bluetooth module is optional.

Battery life

The 1005PE we tested came with a 4400 mAh battery. Also for this netbook there are batteries with increased capacity (5200 and 5800 mAh), but we will have to purchase them separately.

As the sticker pasted on the glossy surface of the device says, with a standard battery the model can work for up to 11 hours, which is undoubtedly worthy of respect. It should be noted that the netbook has several power saving modes that regulate the frequency of operation. central processor, thereby controlling the power consumption of the device.

To achieve maximum battery life, we tested the 1005PE in Power Saving mode with Wi-Fi turned off. Under these conditions, in the reading test of the BatteryEater utility, the netbook showed a time of 14 hours 16 minutes (a very impressive result). In the classic BatteryEater test, the device worked slightly less - 10 hours 9 minutes. It looks like ASUS has delivered on its promise of battery life.

Heat and noise

The working surface and keyboard of the 1005PE do not heat up above 36 degrees even under high, continuous load. The highest temperature on the working surface is achieved in the area above the blower and is 35 degrees. The touchpad temperature is 30-32 degrees. The area under the right hand warms up to a maximum of 29 degrees. At maximum load, the keyboard temperature is 30-32 degrees.

The lower part of the netbook body is noticeably warmer. In the blower area the surface temperature reaches 38 degrees. Temperature extremes at other points of the lower surface do not exceed 33 degrees.

However, this gap does not endow the GMA 3150 with gaming capabilities. This accelerator copes well with games such as good old Counter-Strike, but it is not capable of more. Playing video on an external display is possible, but only at low resolution, otherwise problems will arise. Therefore, it is not advisable to install an HDMI connector in such devices.

Conclusion

The biggest plus of the ASUS Eee PC 1005PE is its incredible battery life: 14 hours from a 4400 mAh battery is undoubtedly respectable. I really liked that this device has a matte matrix, which allows you to work comfortably in sunlight, as well as a standard keyboard layout. The quality of the keyboard itself, however, should be classified as a disadvantage.

In the new release, the netbook comes in seven color options, giving users a choice. The good thing is that this Seashell is available in a matte finish. In general, the quality of the case and the entire device deserves a positive assessment. All this allows us to assert that this model definitely worth a look.

We thank the storeRemarket for the netbook provided for testing
