The sound disappears on its own. No sound on your computer or laptop - what to do? Checking the physical connection of the speakers to the computer

Hello.

I never thought that there could be so many problems with sound! Undeniable, but it's a fact - enough a large number of laptop users are faced with the fact that at one point the sound on their device disappears...

This can happen for various reasons and, most often, you can fix the problem yourself by delving into the Windows and driver settings (thanks to which you can save on computer services). In this article, I have collected some of the most common reasons why sound disappears on laptops (which even a novice PC user can check and fix!). So…

Reason #1: Adjusting the volume in Windows

I, of course, understand that many may express dissatisfaction - “ that this is really..." for such an article. But still, many users do not know that the sound in Windows is controlled not only by the slider, which is located next to the clock (see Fig. 1).

Rice. 1. Windows 10: volume.

If you click on the sound icon (located next to the clock, see Fig. 1) right click mice - then several will appear additional options(see Fig. 2).

  1. volume mixer: it allows you to set your own volume in each application (for example, if you don’t need sound in the browser, then you can turn it off there);
  2. playback devices: in this tab you can choose which speakers or speakers to play sound through (and in general, this tab shows all the sound devices connected to the device. Moreover, sometimes even those that you don’t have! Can you imagine, sound can be sent to non-existent devices ...).

IN volume mixer pay attention to whether the volume is turned down to minimum in your running application. It is recommended to raise all sliders up, at least while troubleshooting and troubleshooting audio problems (see Figure 3).

In the " Playback devices» please note that you have there may be several devices(I have only one device in Fig. 4) - and if the sound is “sent” to the wrong device, this may be the reason for the loss of sound. I recommend that you check all the devices displayed in this tab!

Rice. 4. Sound/playback tab.

By the way, sometimes the built-in Windows wizard helps you figure out and find the causes of sound problems. To launch it, just right-click on the sound icon in Windows (next to the clock) and launch the corresponding wizard (as in Fig. 5).

Rice. 5. Troubleshoot audio problems

Reason #2: drivers and their settings

One of the most common causes of problems with sound (and not only with it) is conflicting drivers (or the lack thereof). To check their availability, I recommend opening device Manager: To do this, log in Windows control panel, then switch the display to large icons and launch this manager (see Fig. 6).

Next, open the “ Sound, gaming and video devices". Pay attention to all lines: there should be no yellow exclamation marks or red crosses (which mean there are problems with the drivers).

By the way, I also recommend checking the drivers in the utility Driver Booster(there are both free and paid versions, they differ in speed). The utility quickly and easily helps you check and find necessary drivers(an example is shown in the screenshot below). What’s convenient is that you don’t need to independently search on various software sites, the utility itself will compare the dates and find the required driver, all you have to do is click a button and agree to install it.

Article about programs for updating drivers: (including Driver Booster)

Reason #3: the sound manager is not configured

In addition to the sound settings in Windows itself, the system (almost always) has a sound manager, which is installed along with the drivers ( in most cases this is Realtek High Definition Audio ). And quite often, it is in it that questions may not be specified. optimal settings, which make the sound inaudible...

How to find it?

It's very simple: go to Windows control panel, and then go to the “ Equipment and sound". Next on this tab you should see the manager that is installed on your equipment. For example, on the laptop that I'm in this moment I'm setting it up - the Dell Audio application is installed. This software needs to be opened (see Fig. 10).

Another important point: You need to check whether the laptop correctly detects the device connected to it. For example, you inserted headphones, but the laptop did not recognize them and does not work with them correctly. Result: no sound in the headphones!

To prevent this from happening, when you connect the same headphones (for example), the laptop usually asks if it has identified them correctly. Your task: to indicate to him the correct sound device (which you connected). Actually, this is what happens in Fig. 12.

Reason #4: The sound card is disabled in the BIOS

On some laptops, you can disable the sound card in the BIOS settings. This way you are unlikely to hear sound from your mobile “friend”. Sometimes BIOS settings can be “accidentally” changed by inept actions (for example, when Windows installation non-experienced users often change not only what is needed...).

Actions in order:

2. Since BIOS settings vary depending on the manufacturer, give universal instructions It's hard enough. I recommend going to all the tabs and checking all the items that contain the word “Audio“. For example, Asus laptops have an Advanced tab, in which you need to switch the High Definition Audio line to Enabled mode (i.e., turned on) (see Fig. 13).

Rice. 13. Asus laptop- Bios settings.

Reason #5: lack of some audio and video codecs

Quite often the problem occurs when trying to play a movie or audio recording. If there is no sound when opening video files or music (but there is sound in other applications), the problem is 99.9% related to the codecs!

  • first remove all old codecs from the system completely;
  • then restart the laptop;
  • reinstall one of the sets proposed below (you can find it at the link) in full advanced mode (thus, you will have all the most necessary codecs in your system).

Codec sets for Windows 7, 8, 10 -

For those who do not want to install new codecs on the system, there is another option: download and install a video player, which already contains everything you need to play the most popular files. various types. Such players are becoming quite popular, especially recently (and no wonder, who wants to suffer with codecs?!). You will find a link to an article about such players below...

Players that work without codecs -

Reason #6: sound card problem

The last thing I wanted to dwell on in this article is the problems of the sound card (it can fail due to sudden surges in electricity (for example, during lightning or welding)).

If this happened, then in my opinion, the most best option- use an external sound card. Such cards are now available at a price ( especially if you buy it at some Chinese store... At least it’s much cheaper than looking for a “native” one) and are a compact device, slightly larger than a regular flash drive. One of these external sound cards is shown in Fig. 14. By the way, such a card often provides much better sound than the built-in card in your laptop!

Rice. 14. External sound for a laptop.

PS

This is where I end this article. By the way, if you have sound, but it’s quiet, I recommend using the tips from this article:. Good luck!

Every modern person owns a laptop, but not everyone knows how to fix problems that arise. Carrying out DIY repairs is not that difficult, you just need to know a few important nuances, which are discussed below. The Internet contains a huge number of queries on the topic of why there is no sound on the laptop. Many people encounter this problem, some of them want to adjust the sound themselves.

Reasons for no sound on a laptop or computer

There is a list of common reasons why the sound disappears. The good news is that most of the problems are simple and can be fixed at home. Every user can liquidate them, even if he purchased his first computer just a week ago. Common breakdowns that lead to this should be mentioned:

  • the initially implemented settings failed or the sound icon disappeared;
  • drivers are out of order;
  • sound card the BIOS does not operate in the required mode;
  • Windows Audio is in the off position.

Settings error

This problem is the main reason why there is no sound on the computer. If it happened software glitch, the volume sliders may drop down or a “Mute” checkbox may appear. It is worth paying attention to the settings, because this will solve the question of how to make the sound louder on a laptop. Because of this, the system sound may completely disappear or the volume of your browser may not work. In such a situation, everything looks strange: one gets the impression that the laptop is working in the desired mode, but there is no sound in the browser when watching a video.

Driver corruption

If the volume has been checked, all connections are made correctly, but the sound on the laptop does not work, then the cause of the problem may lie in the drivers, which are a necessary component for the correct operation of any computer device. If the driver is broken or operates incorrectly, the sound may disappear.

There are main reasons why the driver starts to work incorrectly, among them the following are worth highlighting:

  • virus programs;
  • opposition to existing programs;
  • a malfunction that occurred in the work operating system;
  • problems encountered when updating the driver.

Before you begin to solve the problem, it is worth establishing that the cause is in the drivers. To do this, go to “Start”, then “Control Panel”, then “Device Manager”, go to the “Sound Devices” tab. If yellow is visible in this tab Exclamation point, then this clearly indicates a problem.

Missing or damaged sound card

The laptop may have a completely missing or inoperative sound card, and this may be the reason for the lack of sound. In the "Device Manager" you should refer to "sound devices". The yellow color of the icon indicates that the sound card drivers are out of date or missing altogether. Developed and functioning special programs, which test audio drivers, for example “SoundCheck”, it is worth using it. In some cases, the board will need to be replaced.

How to restore sound?

There is no sound on the laptop, what should I do? Carry out periodic checks, and then, focusing on the reason for the lack of sound, you should perform the following actions:

  • Reboot your laptop

The first thing you should do in order to restore sound on your laptop is to reboot it. Often after this action the sound appears and everything works as it should. This is especially worth doing if after Windows installations 7 or 8 the sound disappeared. It is necessary that all changes are updated and start working in the new mode.

  • Check if speakers and headphones are connected

If the reboot does not bring the desired result, then you should check whether the speakers and headphones are turned on and whether the speakers are working properly. There is a possibility of a lack of connection, which resulted in a weak sound or it began to wheeze, then it should be strengthened. There are often situations when broken wires cause a problem.

  • Check your system settings

The situation with system settings is not terrible; it can be resolved quickly without the use of complex programs. If the sound is missing completely or only in the browser, then initially you need to look at the volume mixer: right-click and go to the phrase “Open volume control.” Next, check the location of the sliders that control the volume state.

If they are located below, then there will be quiet sound on a laptop. They will have to be moved up, the problem of how to increase the sound will be solved. You need to refer to the location of the sound indicators, which should be in the “Turn on sound” position. The slider on the left controls all volume, while the other sliders control system sounds available applications. The indicated problem is actually a common occurrence: if there is no sound, then it makes sense to carefully examine the volume mixer.

  • Is the sound card disabled in the BIOS?

One of the common reasons why there is no sound on your laptop is that the sound card is not working in the BIOS. This problem can occur after a system failure. In addition, it is possible that the card will be disabled due to the user’s inexperience. It should be said that a non-working sound card is precisely the source of the problem. The solution to the problem is quite simple: you need to go to the BIOS and turn on the card. Immediately after this, the sound when watching a movie should be restored.

Getting into the BIOS is easy; this is done using hot keys that are available on every laptop. After entering the BIOS, you should go to the Advanced Features, Chipset section, then go to “Onboard devices”. On the sound card (Realtek Audio, Audio Controller) you need to set the “Enable” icon. The disabled state is indicated by the “Disable” icon. If you go to the BIOS and see the “Enable” sign, but there is still no sound, then another problem should be solved.

  • Check Windows Audio Services

There is a possibility that the Windows Audio service is disabled in the settings, for this reason the sound will not play. If you do not want to go to service center, then checking the proper operation of this service yourself will not be difficult. You need to press two “Win + R” keys at the same time, a window will immediately appear where you should enter the command “services.msc”.

In this list you should find the “Windows Audio” service and see its status. Correct settings appear when the “Status” column has the “Running” mode, the “Startup Type” column is set to “Automatic”. When the “Status” field is set to “Stopped,” this indicates that the service is not running, resulting in no sound on the laptop. You need to go to this service and select “Start”.

  • Update your drivers

To update, you need to go to the device manager where the sound card is, right-click on the “Properties” tab. A window will appear in which you should find the “Driver” tab and click the “Update” button. Next, a method of searching via the Internet will be proposed. If you have a disk or folder with drivers, then you need to select the second option and indicate the location where the driver is located. If there are no drivers, you should download them from the Internet online.

System rollback is another possible solution to the problem. This should be done if it is due to an incorrect driver update. This is easy and quick to do; you just need to click “Roll Back” and click “Yes” in the warning. If the loss is due to incorrect operation of the sound card driver, then you should figure out how to configure the necessary parameters yourself.

The video will be your visual aid and will allow you to do everything quickly and accurately, since it discusses significant options and solutions that, by the way, are available even to novice users. Why is there no sound on my favorite laptop? Watch and act, everything will definitely work out.

Good day.

This article is based on personal experience, is a kind of collection of reasons why the computer may lose sound. Most of the reasons, by the way, can be easily eliminated yourself! To begin with, it should be distinguished that the sound may disappear for software and hardware reasons. For example, you can check the functionality of the speakers on another computer or audio/video equipment. If they are working and there is sound, then most likely there are questions about the software part of the computer (more on that in more detail).

So, let's get started...

6 reasons why there is no sound

1. Non-working speakers (cords often bend and break)

This is the first thing you need to do when setting up sound and speakers on your computer! And sometimes, you know, there are such incidents: you come to help a person solve a problem with sound, but it turns out he forgot about the wires...

In addition, you may have connected them to the wrong input. The fact is that the computer’s sound card has several outputs: for a microphone, for speakers (headphones). Typically, the microphone output is pink, and the speaker output is green. Pay attention to this! Also, here is a short article about, where this issue was discussed in more detail.

Rice. 1. Cord for connecting speakers.

Sometimes it happens that the inputs are very worn, and they just need to be slightly adjusted: taken out and reinserted. You can also clean your computer from dust at the same time.
Also pay attention to whether the speakers themselves are turned on. On the front of many devices you will notice a small LED that signals that the speakers are connected to the computer.

Rice. 2. These speakers are turned on because the green LED on the device is on.

By the way, if you turn up the volume in the speakers to maximum, you can hear a characteristic “hissing”. Pay attention to all this. Despite its simplicity, in most cases problems arise precisely with this...

2. Sound is turned down in settings

The second thing you need to do is check if everything is in order with the computer settings; perhaps in Windows the sound is programmatically turned down to minimum or disabled in the sound devices control panel. Perhaps, if it is simply turned down to minimum, there is sound - it plays very weakly and you simply cannot hear it.

Let's show the setup using Windows 10 as an example (in Windows 7, 8 everything will be similar).

1) Open control Panel, then go to the section “ equipment and sounds«.

3) In your “sound” tab, audio devices (including speakers, headphones) connected to the computer should be displayed. Select the desired speakers and click on their properties (see Fig. 4).

4) In the first tab that will open in front of you (“general”) you need to look carefully at two things:

  • - has the device been detected?, if not, you need drivers for it. If they are not there, use one of the utilities for, the utility will also recommend where to download the necessary driver;
  • - look at the bottom of the window to see if the device is turned on. If not, be sure to turn it on.

5) Without closing the window, go to the “levels” masonry. Look at the volume level, it should be more than 80-90%. At least until you have sound, and then you can adjust (see Fig. 6).

Rice. 6. Volume levels

6) In the “Advanced” tab there is a special button for checking the sound - when you press it, a short melody should play (5-6 seconds). If you don't hear it, go to the next step, saving the settings.

Rice. 7. Sound check

7) By the way, you can go to “ control panel/hardware and sounds" and open " volume settings", as shown in Fig. 8.

Here we are interested in whether the sound is turned down to minimum. By the way, in this tab you can turn down the sound of even a certain type, for example, all that is heard in the Firefox browser.

8) And lastly.

In the lower right corner (next to the clock) there are also volume settings. Check whether the volume level is normal and whether the speaker is turned off, as in the picture below. If everything is fine, you can move on to step 3.

Rice. 10. Adjusting the volume on the computer.

Important! Besides Windows settings, be sure to pay attention to the volume of the speakers themselves. Perhaps the regulator is set to minimum!

3. There is no driver for the sound card

Most often, problems arise on the computer with drivers for video and sound cards... That is why the third step to restore sound is to check the drivers. You may have already identified this problem in the previous step...

To determine if everything is okay with them, go to device Manager. To do this, open control Panel, then open the tab “ Equipment and sound" and then run device Manager. This is the fastest way (see Fig. 11).

In the device manager we are interested in the “ Sound, gaming and video devices". If you have a sound card and it is connected: it should be displayed here.

1) If the device is displayed and there is a yellow (or red) exclamation mark next to it, it means the driver is not working correctly or is not installed at all. In this case, you need to download the required driver version. By the way, I like using the program - it will show not only the device model of your card, but also tell you where to download the necessary drivers for it.

A great way to update and check drivers is to use utilities to auto-update and search for drivers for any hardware on your PC:. Highly recommend!

2) If there is a sound card, but Windows does not see it... Anything can happen here. It is possible that the device is faulty, or you have connected it poorly. I recommend that you first clean your computer from dust and blow out the slot if you do not have a built-in sound card. In general, in this case, the problem is most likely with the computer’s hardware (or that the device is turned off in the BIOS; see Bos a little lower in the article).

Rice. 12. Device Manager

It also makes sense to update your drivers or install drivers of a different version: older or newer. It often happens that developers are not able to provide for all possible computer configurations, and it is possible that some drivers on your system conflict with each other.

4. No codecs for audio/video

If you have sound when you turn on your computer (you can hear, for example, Windows greeting), and when you turn on any video (AVI, MP4, Divx, WMV, etc.) - the problem is either in the video player, or in the codecs, or in the file itself (it may be corrupted, try opening another video file).

1) If the problem is with the video player, I recommend that you install another one and try. For example, the player gives excellent results. It already has built-in codecs optimized for its operation, so it can open most video files.

2) If the problem is with codecs, I advise you to do two things. The first thing is to remove your old codecs from the system completely.

And second, install a full set of codecs - K-Lite Codec Pack. Firstly, this package has an excellent and fast Media Player, and secondly, all the most popular codecs will be installed, which open all the most popular video and audio formats.

Article about codecs K-Lite Codec Pack and their correct installation:

By the way, it is important not only to install them, but to install them correctly, i.e. full set. To do this, download the full set and during installation select the “Lots of Stuff” mode (more about this in the article about codecs - the link is just above).

Rice. 13. Setting up codecs

5. Incorrectly configured BIOS

If you have a built-in sound card, check your BIOS settings. If the sound device is turned off in the settings, then you are unlikely to be able to get it to work in Windows. To be honest, this problem usually occurs rarely, because... By default in the BIOS settings the sound card is enabled.

To access these settings, press the F2 or Del button (depending on your PC) when you turn on the computer. If you can’t enter, try taking a closer look at the computer’s boot screen as soon as you turn it on. Usually there is always a button on it to enter the Bios.

For example, the computer turns on ACER- the DEL button is written below - to enter the Bios (see Fig. 14).

Rice. 14. Bios entry button

In Bios you need to look for a line containing the word " Integrated«.

Rice. 15. Integrated Peripherals

In the list you need to find your audio device and see if it is turned on. In Figure 16 (below) it is turned on; if you see “Disabled” opposite you, change it to “Enabled" or “Auto".

Rice. 16. Turn on AC97 Audio

After this, you can exit the BIOS and save the settings.

6. Viruses and adware

Where are we without viruses... Moreover, there are so many of them that it is unknown what they can even present.

First, pay attention to the operation of the computer as a whole. If frequent antivirus activations occur, the “brakes” are out of the blue. Perhaps you actually became infected with a virus, and more than one.

The best option would be to check your computer for viruses with some modern antivirus with updated databases. In one of the articles earlier, I cited the best at the beginning of 2016:

By the way, good results shows an antivirus, you don’t even need to install it. Just download and check.

Secondly, I recommend checking your computer using a flash drive (the so-called Live CD). For those who have never encountered this, I’ll say: it’s as if you are loading a ready-made operating system that has an antivirus from a CD (flash drive). By the way, you may get sound in it. If so, then most likely you have problems with Windows and may have to...

7. Restoring sound if all else fails

Here I will give some tips that may help you.

1) If you used to have sound, but now you don’t, you may have installed some programs or drivers that caused a hardware conflict. It makes sense to try this option.

2) If you have another sound card or other speakers, try connecting them to the computer and reinstalling the drivers for them (while removing from the system the drivers for the old devices that you disabled).

3) If all the previous points did not help, you can take the risk. Then install immediately sound drivers and if suddenly a sound appears, watch it carefully after each installed program. Most likely, you will immediately notice the culprit: a driver or program that previously conflicted...

4) Alternatively, connect headphones instead of speakers (speakers instead of headphones). It might be worth contacting a specialist...

On modern computers A very common problem is that the sound on the laptop has disappeared. We’ll look further into what to do if this happens.

In fact, there are not many reasons why this happens. Moreover, they are the same for different laptop models - HP, Lenovo, Acer and others.

So, let's start with the simplest thing.

Settings failed

This problem is that for some reason the sound level is reduced to a minimum or completely turned off.

Moreover, this may not affect the entire system as a whole, but only the browser or system sounds. There are a huge number of reasons for this phenomenon.

The main one is carelessness - the user, due to inattention, can press the volume reduction buttons on his laptop.

On the other hand, it could be some kind of work malware Therefore, it would be useful to check the entire system using an antivirus.

As for solving this problem, everything is done extremely simply. Specifically, you need to do the following:

  • In the Quick Launch panel, right-click on the volume icon (highlighted in Figure 1 with a red frame). In the drop-down menu that opens, select “Open Volume Mixer” (highlighted in green).
  • After this, the window shown in Figure 2 opens. If we see a muted icon there (an example of this is highlighted in a red oval), we need to click on it, after which the sound will return to normal state.
In general, you need to raise the volume sliders (highlighted with a green frame).

As you can see, the volume mixer window displays all the sounds that are currently in the system. The first column is responsible for almost all sounds that come from the speakers.

The second column is responsible for system sounds. These include the sound of a window closing, error sounds, and the like.

Finally, other bars may appear depending on the programs running.

For example, in Figure No. 2 there is a column with Opera browser. It appears only if you watch a video in it or do some other operations in which the presence of sound effects is expected.

In the place where the browser appears in our example, there may be some kind of game or other program currently running.

In general, the first thing to do when audio is missing is to open the mixer, move all the sliders up, and check to see if the audio icons are muted.

Driver failure

As is known, in order for hardware to communicate normally with software, drivers are needed.

They serve as a kind of translator between these two important components of the computer.

Driver update process

To update your sound card driver, you need to do the following:

  • Open the Start menu and find “Control Panel” there. Figure No. 3 is relevant for the Windows operating system in others Windows versions this item can also be located in the Start menu, or maybe right on the desktop or in other places.
In any case, all versions of Windows have a search where we can enter the query “Control Panel” and easily find what we need.

  • Here in the search bar you should enter the query “Device Manager” (shown in red frame in Figure 4). You can also find it in the list that opens without any searches.
In the resulting list, you must select “Update device drivers” (underlined in the same figure with a green line).

  • This will open the Device Manager. In it you should select the item “Sound, video and gaming devices” (underlined with a red line in Figure No. 5). This is very easy to do - click on the icon for opening a list of such devices (highlighted with a red oval).
Next, a list of all available sound devices will open. By the name you can understand which of them are responsible for the sound - the word “Audio” will appear in the name. Although, to be on the safe side, it is better to update the drivers of all devices presented in this list.
To do this, right-click on each device and select “Update drivers...” (circled in green) from the drop-down menu.

  • Now we have two options available to us - automatic search drivers on the Internet or selecting a driver file yourself. The second option assumes that we have already downloaded the driver for this device in advance or inserted a disk/flash drive with it into the computer.
But in most cases, we still have to look for them on the Internet, so we choose the first option.

After this we will see the process of searching for the required program.

  • After this, the system will display a list of available drivers. The user will only have to select one of them by simply clicking on it with the left mouse button. Next, the installation process itself will begin.
Although the system may display a message stating that “the drivers for this device do not need to be updated.” Then you just need to close open window update and move to another device.

Disabling the Windows Audio Service

In the operating room Windows system There is such a simple system as Windows Audio. It, in fact, performs a very simple function - providing sound.

In general, there are many similar systems in Windows, and then we will be able to see their entire list.

In any case, Windows Audio may turn off, and the reasons for this are exactly the same as before - carelessness or inexperience of the user, the operation of virus programs, and so on.

This problem can be solved very simply. To do this you need to do the following:

  • Press the Win + R key combination on your keyboard to launch the program execution window. In the window that appears, enter “services.msc” and press the Enter key on the keyboard or the “OK” button in the same window (highlighted with a red oval).

  • Everyone window opens Windows services, including Windows Audio. Actually, we need to find it in all this diversity. Right-click on it and select “Run” from the drop-down menu.

Note: In Figure 9, the “Run” command is inactive, because the serviceWindows Audioworks fine. If there is no sound on the laptop and the “Run” command is inactive, then the problem is not with this service. Otherwise, it will be active and the service can be started.

Sound card turned off

Sometimes a phenomenon may occur that the sound card simply turns off and turns off. And the reasons for this are still the same, but most often it is disabled due to a software glitch.

Without going into details, let's say that the solution to this problem is very simple - enable the sound card in the BIOS. The main difficulty is to enter this same BIOS at all.

The main problem is the different way to login to different brands computers. We will look at how to enter BIOS on different brands of laptops later.

Let's imagine that we have already gotten there. Now you need to understand what to do next.

And after we got into the BIOS, we need to find an item related to sound in one way or another. You can also recognize it by the word “Audio” in the name.

In some cases, the title will include the word “Sound”.

Examples of such names are as follows: Realtek Audio, Audio Controller, Onboard Sound, HDAudio. The latter can be seen in Figure No. 10.

Accordingly, you need to click on this item and select the “Enabled” option. In the above option, this option is already selected, but in the event of a breakdown in the sound card connection, another option will be selected.

That's really all we need to do.

How to get into BIOS

In fact, how to get into the BIOS is already written in the boot screen. You can find an example below.

As you can see, it says that to start the installation you need to press the Delete button on the keyboard. It is also possible to press the F2 button.

In general, all information on this matter can be found in the loading screen.

To get into the BIOS, you need to press the indicated button until it loads into the BIOS.

Now the problem is that, again, depending on the laptop model, the interface can be completely different.

This is what a classic AWARD BIOS looks like. The interface is very old, as it seems at first glance.

This is what the AMI BIOS looks like, which is also quite familiar to many at least somewhat advanced users.

Here is the most advanced interface that UEFI BIOS users can see today. In general, here the creators decided to move away from the canonical forms of AMI and AWARD.

What do we need to find in this most terrible BIOS for many users? Here we need a section that is responsible for the operation of built-in devices.

Again, it will be called differently depending on the model.

Example names: Advanced Features, Chipset or Intergrated Peripherals. In any case, you can understand from the meaning what this section is.

For example, in the same AMI BIOS the corresponding menu item is located where the arrows point in Figure No. 15.

So we need to go there. And there we can already find those menu items that are shown in Figure No. 10.

What to do ellie no sound on laptop on windows 8

Hardware audio settings

After obvious faults have been checked, you should pay attention to the software sound settings. It is quite possible that the sound in Windows is turned down or completely turned off. If it is reduced so much that it is barely audible, then the user will most likely assume that the computer itself has broken down.

It’s best to see visually how the sound is configured using Windows 7 as an example; on Windows 8 and 10 the operating principle is the same:

If you are unable to reproduce the test sound, you should check whether the sound is turned down to minimum value or disabled altogether:

Check Device Manager

If there is no sound on the computer under Windows control 7, as well as operating systems Windows 10 and other versions, you should check the status of the mini-programs (drivers) for the sound card. Most likely, they need to be updated or they are not there at all.

You can check the status of the equipment and its drivers in “ Device Manager", which is easy to find in Control panels on the " System».

If a problem is identified due to which the sound does not work, you need to download and install a driver that is compatible with this PC. The current state of your computer can be maintained using special utilities for automatic updating and searching current version drivers for any hardware on a PC or laptop. For example, the program Everest will determine the sound card model, check all drivers for relevance and tell you where to find the necessary drivers for sound on Windows 7.

No codecs for audio/video

If there is sound in the browsers, but there is no sound when you start the video on the PC, then you should look for the problem either in the media player itself or in the audio codecs.

To constantly watch videos, it is recommended to use KMR player. He has already proven himself and is showing good results. The creators of the program have provided a lot of different codecs for video playback. And, as a rule, most films are successfully reproduced in this program.

The problem with codecs can be radically solved using the package K-Lite Codec Pack. It can solve the missing sound problem. It has a full set of current codecs that open almost all popular formats, both video and audio files.

Viruses and adware

Problems with sound on Windows 7 may mean that a virus has appeared in the system. There are many types of viruses and they can negatively affect the operating system.

How to behave if the sound on your computer disappears and you suspect a virus:

  • Take a close look at how your computer works as a whole. If it often freezes or slows down unexpectedly, then most likely the PC has undergone a virus attack. If installed antivirus program failed and missed the virus attack, then it is best to check the system with a third-party antivirus with up-to-date virus databases. For example, you can use the utility Dr.Web CureIt. This healing utility successfully cures an infected system.
  • You can try checking your computer using Live CD(emergency boot disk). With its help, you can download a lightweight version of the operating system with a ready-made antivirus. If you boot the restored system from Live CD sound appears, then most likely there is a malfunction in Windows 10 itself. Most often, you will have to reinstall it or perform a system restore using restore points, if this mode was enabled and restore points were created.

Checking the BIOS settings

If your computer or laptop has a built-in sound card and there is no sound even in headphones, then you can look BIOS.

This is an extreme measure - AC97 is enabled by default in the factory settings. If the settings are lost, the sound device in the Windows operating system will not work.

Each computer logs into the BIOS differently. For example, for ACER computers, before booting the system, you must press and hold the Del key. In general, before loading the operating system, you must indicate how to enter the BIOS.

After pressing the Del key, the following dialog box will open, in which you need to select the item “ BIOS Setup».

In the window that opens, you need to find an inscription like AC 97 Audio, use the arrows on the keyboard to highlight this inscription and click on the Enter key. A dialog box will appear to select which function to activate HD Audio or AC97. We are interested in the AC97 “Auto” inscription. Confirm your choice and use the ESC key to exit this section. Exit the BIOS, saving the settings.

If you can’t get the sound back after changing the BIOS settings, then the last option is to replace or send the sound card for repair.
