We kill in the trash the protected phone No.1 A9. For professional work

In April 2017, the new Chinese brand Gretel launched several budget smartphones... Interestingly, this company was previously engaged in ODM-release of smartphones for Blackview. , we have already done, now the more expensive model Gretel A9 is next in line. Although it is very difficult to call it expensive, because the device in retail costs only about $ 90, and for the Chinese stock it can be found for 70. What the new brand offers for this money - the Gretel A9 review will help you to find out.

The characteristic features of the device are chips that were previously available mainly in more expensive devices. But now even ultra-budget handsets have begun to equip with a metal case and a fingerprint scanner, so it will still be difficult to surprise the Gretel A9. To understand whether it is worth buying, consider all the characteristics and features of a smartphone.

The hardware in Gretel A9 is typical for a state employee, a similar or very similar filling is used in most cheap Chinese smartphones.

Design, body materials, dimensions and weight

The smartphone is not very different from the competition. It has a traditional rectangular design with slight curves. The dimensions are typical for a five-inch device, 146x73 mm. The thickness reaches 8.7 mm. The Gretel A9 weighs 164 grams.

The front panel is covered with 2.5D glass. At the top is the speaker, symmetrically on the sides of it - the camera and flash, as well as sensors. Under the screen there is an oval home button with a fingerprint scanner and two touch-sensitive keys without backlighting.

The main body of the rear panel is made of aluminum with a black or gold finish. Bottom and top - plastic "caps" to match the color of the panel. A camera lens with a flash is placed in the upper corner, a speaker mesh in the lower corner.

The placement of other elements is not the most familiar. Both the MicroUSB port and the headphone jack are located on the upper end.

On the bottom, there are only two screws for securing the cover and a microphone hole.

The volume buttons are on the left side. The right side is occupied by the power / lock key and a sliding card tray.

CPU

The basis of the smartphone is the MediaTek MT6737 chipset, the most affordable chip with 4 Cortex A53 cores. Their clock frequency is 1.25 GHz. Graphics processing is handled by GPU Mali T720 MP2. This hardware can be called the minimum acceptable in 2017, since it copes with the basic set of tasks of the average user. But expecting high performance from a smartphone is clearly not worth it.

The system works smoothly without brakes. Switching between running programs is also normal. You can play games, but with reduced graphics quality. The same tanks at low settings produce stable 40+ FPS. In AnTuTu tests, the smartphone is gaining 28-30 thousand points, of which about 2.5 thousand are on the schedule.

Memory

2 GB installed on board the smartphone random access memory generation LPDDR3. This is good, because 1 GB in 2017 is not enough for serious workloads. The built-in memory is 16 GB, of which 10.5 GB is allocated for the user section. The memory chip is quite fast, the speed of sequential data reading reaches almost 200 MB / s. There is a slot for a memory card, but it is combined with a second SIM card slot. Connecting drives via USB OTG is also supported.

Battery

The battery in Gretel A9 is not very capacious, only 2300 mAh. For a device of decent thickness, it is clearly not enough: Meizu or Xiaomi, with this thickness (slightly less than 9 mm), manage to accommodate 4000 mAh. In video viewing mode, the device can last up to 6 hours, and in heavy games it will be discharged in less than 4 hours. This is clearly not much, state employees could have provided such autonomy 3 years ago, so I would like to see progress.

The complete power supply unit is typical for the Chinese (the same power supply units are supplied in the UMI and Oukitel kit), a European plug. The power supply unit has a current of 1A, with it the smartphone charges in 2.5 hours. Naturally, there is no support for fast charging, even from a two-amp power supply unit from Xiaomi, the device does not take much more than 1A.

Cameras

Gretel A9 is equipped with a main camera on a Samsung S5K3H7 matrix (pixels 1.4 microns). This once-top matrix is technically similar to the Sony IMX179 sensor and related ones. At one time, flagships (such as Samsung Galaxy S3, Xiaomi Mi2, LG Nexus 5) were equipped with image sensors of this class, and 8-megapixel iPhone cameras are also derived from them. Now such matrices, slightly simplified, are placed in front of flagships, and the Chinese are actively introducing them as the main sensor in state employees.

There is no data on the manufacturer of the optics (it could be a Chinese company like O-Film), the aperture is not declared. But according to EXIF data, the relative hole diameter is F / 1.8. It's hard to believe in it, but judging by the clear macro, it doesn't look like an impudent deception. After all, the faster the lens, the more it tends to give a clear foreground, but lose background details.

Close-up

What upsets the camera is not the best realization of the sensor's potential, as well as interpolation up to 13 MP. Sometimes there is a desire to give the Chinese a hand for the fact that they have resorted to stretching the picture unreasonably often. Indeed, it does not affect the quality of the pictures when viewed on the screen, and at 100% - on the contrary, it only makes the frame more soapy. As a result, it seemed to me that Gretel A9 shoots slightly weaker than the younger model A7. Also, the camera goes a little in pink tones.

On the street during the day

You can try to squeeze more out of the camera (if the quality is interfered with by the software, and not by insufficient quality glass of optics), but then you will have to experiment with different alternative programs cameras, "shaman" with various drivers and camera libraries in the firmware. Obviously, only geeks are interested in doing this, and most want high-quality photos "out of the box".

Day Shooting

The video also upset a little. The smartphone can only shoot in HD, while the A7 writes in FullHD. Front-camera Based on 2MP GC2155 sensor (1.75μm pixels), but stretched to 5MP. The front camera has a flash, but it's not very powerful. The photo quality from the front camera is average, but no more.

Screen

Gretel A9 is equipped with a five-inch IPS display with HD resolution. Its quality is typical for a state employee, the viewing angles are not bad, and there is no reason to find fault with the colors. The brightness is not very high, about 350 cd / m2, but you can see the information in the sun. The sensor supports 5 touches, it is covered with glass. If there is an oleophobic coating, then its quality is low, since the prints cannot be wiped off with one movement of the napkin.

Communications

There are one and a half slots for SIM cards in the smartphone: the second is combined with a memory card slot. All current communication standards are supported, LTE operates in the bands 1, 3, 7, 8, 20 and 40, which should be enough for Russia. Wi-Fi is designed to work on 802.11n networks, but only at 2.4 GHz. Bluetooth version is 4.0. The navigation module only supports GPS. In a minute, he finds about a dozen satellites, the positioning accuracy is average: there are no frequent "teleportations", but it will not work to determine the position with an accuracy of a meter.

Sound

The loudspeaker located at the back produces an average volume. You can hear the call from the next room, but if you are in a noisy place, it is easy to miss the incoming one. The location of the speaker is not the best: it is recessed in back panel which has no protrusions next to it. If you are used to listening to MP3, then you can listen to music in normal headphones, but the device will clearly upset audiophiles.

Operating system

Gretel A9 runs Android 6, the system interface is Freeme OS. In fact, this is not a modification of Android like MIUI, EMUI or Flyme, but just a launcher. After all, nothing but a desktop without a menu of programs, it essentially does not differ from the assemblies of Google. Status bar, settings menu, shutter - all these elements have not been changed. The OS works tolerably, without brakes and application crashes. The manufacturer promises an early update to Android 7.

Features Gretel A9

The main feature of the smartphone is a fingerprint scanner located in the home button under the screen. It works quite quickly, it is able to recognize a wet finger, but for trouble-free operation, it is better to register the main finger in the system twice.

Alternatives to Gretel A9

If you are not satisfied with the autonomy of the Gretel A9, you can consider the Doogee X5 Max Pro. It also has a fingerprint scanner, 2/16 GB of memory, but the battery has a capacity of 4000 mAh. But he removes much worse, and the case is plastic there. The Leagoo M5 is also equipped with a fingerprint scanner, but is based on the older MT6580 chipset, and its cameras are also weaker.

Bluboo D1 can also compete with the A9. It also has a metal case, a flash on the front, a fingerprint scanner, but there is an MT6580 chip installed. And the autonomy of this smartphone is still the same, if not worse. But Xiaomi Redmi 4A does not have a scanner, but there is a fresher and more energy-efficient chipset, the situation with autonomy is better.

Pros and cons of Gretel A9

  • metal case;
  • good build quality;
  • fingerprint scanner;
  • low price;
  • normal amounts of memory.

Disadvantages:

  • on the light version of the smartphone - frames around the screen;
  • hybrid SIM / MicroSD slot;
  • mediocre autonomy;
  • the potential of the camera can be unleashed even better.

Our review for Gretel A9

The Gretel A9 review left a mixed impression. On the one hand, as for a budget employee it is cheaper than $ 100, this is a very good smartphone. The presence of metal in the case, a fingerprint scanner, a good screen and 2/16 GB of memory are encouraging. But on the other hand, the younger model A7 supports multi-touch for 10 fingers, not 5, has a separate slot for a flash drive, is equipped with an event indicator and its screen is brighter.

As for the camera - here, by the standards of an ultra-budgetary, everything is not bad. But it was possible to try and make it even better by making more advanced software. Low battery capacity can also be frustrating.

The Samsung A 2016 line of smartphones is truly something. Keeping the slightly rounded rectangular shape of the 2015 A line (compared to the flagship S series), the new devices have got a more pleasant and sophisticated design. Moreover, Samsung has presented several additional size options to choose from, the largest of which is the A9 model - a kind of 6-inch "behemoth", impressive both in size and shape.

With prices in the $ 450-500 range, the Galaxy A9 is easier to buy than the premium Galaxy S7 edge, especially as many consumers today are struggling to find ways to save something. If you like big ... no better, huge displays, then the new A9 is the phablet you've always dreamed of.

Some people say with some displeasure in their voices that metal has become the new plastic when they mean the design of the hero of our review. If you don't give too much great importance With that said, we'll assume the Galaxy A9, with its sleek, shiny exterior, might be to your liking. Yes, the body of this smartphone is a little easier to break; yes, it collects a little more fingerprints, but it looks damn attractive!

The design of the Samsung Galaxy A9 is one of its main selling points: you can buy this device in three different colors - white, gold and rose gold, with a black bezel in the last two variants. In our opinion, all three options are quite attractive. The side metal frame is painted to match one of the three above-mentioned colors, and we are pleased to say that Korean manufacturer took a lot of care to smooth out all the edges and protrusions, creating a smartphone that feels great in the hand.

“Reliable” and “solid” are the two words we would definitely use to describe the Galaxy A9. The phone does not look fragile or plastic, like, for example, the Xiaomi Mi5 model, but beautiful and reliable - all this will give you confidence that it will not fall apart very quickly after purchase.

Keeping in mind the impressive size and considerable weight of the device in question (200 g), the A9 is definitely solid - and so much so that it easily outweighs other large and heavy gadgets, for example, the iPhone 6s Plus (192 g) and Galaxy Note 5 (171 g). However, given the massive 6-inch display in the Galaxy A9, such numbers were certainly to be expected. It's also worth mentioning this: since this has already become the norm for recent premium devices from Samsung, the keys (Home, Volume and On) are clickable and easy to press with excellent tactile feedback.

The A9 (2016), being a premium phablet, has a fingerprint reader built into the home key, like the S7 or Note 5. This scanner also works in a similar way: it is almost always fast and responsive, although its level of accuracy decreases if the user places his finger carelessly enough to recognize the fingerprint.

In our opinion, the Galaxy A9, compared to this year's flagship S7 and S7 edge from Samsung, clearly lacks one thing - water resistance. This is one area where the corner has been cut to keep the price of the phone at an affordable level.

Display

The 6-inch bezel is another centerpiece of the A9 (2016). If you like a phone like this, then you obviously love giant screens. Samsung has equipped the aforementioned unit with a decent, albeit not-so-chic, AMOLED display. Its 1080 x 1920 resolution provides a pixel density of 367 ppi - more than enough.

The phablet under consideration has the usual super-saturated screen modes "Adaptive" and AMOLED, and if you activate the "Basic" mode, you will have a more natural color profile. We have noticed that the display tends to be bluish-green at times, and while all is perfectly acceptable, the color gamut sometimes appears slightly muted, especially at low brightness levels. Overall, the Galaxy A9's panel is far from the most colorful of many other smartphone displays.

Nevertheless, things are not so bad, especially when it comes to brightness levels: the maximum brightness value is 560 nits, and this figure is enough for outdoor use. The minimum brightness value is only 1 nt - with this value you can be sure that in the dark your eyes will not be irritated when working with the screen.

Interface and functionality

For experienced Samsung users The Galaxy A9 is nothing new: it features a redesigned TouchWiz interface on top of Android 5.1. Yes, you read that last sentence correctly - this device does not have Android 6 and we consider this to be a clear oversight on Samsung's part. But this situation was until the first half of May this year - after that Samsung announced the imminent release of an update for the A9 to Android 6.0 Marshmallow, and at the moment we have already received such an update for the hero of our review.

However, the Galaxy A9's user interface is colorful and vibrant. It is quite fast, although it tends to be a little jerky, and is not as smooth in operation as the software in some devices from HTC, Motorola or Apple. Also note that the aforementioned smartphone is clearly bulky, so you will need at least two hands to use it and extra attention so that it does not accidentally slip out of your hand.

I wonder how you can type characters on such a large display? Alas, this process with the thumb is almost impossible - you must have the giant's fingers. The advantage of typing with two hands in portrait mode is that it is more convenient than on small smartphones. However, for us and our medium sized palms, typing characters in landscape mode was a bit problematic. Of course, since we are talking about TouchWiz, it has a lot of additional functionality for the stock keyboard, for example, relatively quick access to the trackpad, the built-in T9 system that makes typing with one finger more convenient, a large selection of emoticons, as well as the ability to easily add any elements to your messages, including pictures, videos, audio, calendar notes, location on the map, etc. Yeah, real hardcore.

Processor and memory

One of the intriguing elements of the internal stuffing of the Galaxy A9 is the Snapdragon 652 chipset, which includes an 8-core main processor and an Adreno 510 graphics accelerator. The device under review with such a processor may well compete in terms of performance with the best smartphones of 2015, for example, the Galaxy S6 or Note. 5. All this suggests that the chipset in the A9 is powerful enough.

Note that this is actually the case: when we tested this phablet in different modes of operation, it remained stable and fast. We're sure the generous 3GB of RAM played a role here as well. If you happen to run a lot of games on your A9 (2016), then this device will clearly not disappoint you.

In a relationship internal memory let's say that its volume is 32 GB, which is quite enough for most cases, although there is a microSD card slot in reserve as additional data storage potential.

Camera

The Galaxy A9 has a 13MP main camera with optical image stabilization (OIS) and a wide lens aperture (f / 1.9), which allows the camera to capture more light than the average smartphone. On the bezel, there is a front-facing 8-megapixel camera.

The camera user experience is one of the best you can get on a smartphone in its class. The phone supports quick launch of the camera application: a simple double tap on the Home key from anywhere (even when the device is locked), and this application is instantly launched. The camera interface is quite convenient: it has separate buttons for activating photo and video shooting, plus, it allows you to pause and then resume video recording. In general, the interface under review is well-configured, although the massive 6-inch display will make using the camera a little inconvenient.

And finally, let's say that by default the phone takes pictures in 16: 9 format and a resolution of 9.6 megapixels, but you can easily switch to 4: 3 format, the maximum resolution of which is 13 megapixels.

Image quality

The quality of the photos taken by the A9 is satisfactory, but not great. Sometimes the pictures come out a little fuzzy, the color balance shifts to the colder side, which is why the photos do not look colorful enough.

Indoors, the phablet does a good job of limiting noise and preserving the scene. The LED flash is powerful enough, at least for foreground subjects. Overall, indoor shots come out pretty bright and lifelike.

Despite the front camera resolution of 8 megapixels, the photos can be described as decent, but nothing more. They often look slightly washed out and lack clarity and color. Keep in mind that the "beautification" effect is activated by default, so you should keep this in mind when photographing.

The quality of video recording can be called good: the level of detail is not great, but decent enough, and the scene being shot looks quite natural. As for autofocus, it can be buggy at times, and you can see how the stabilization system works: in the center of the frame, the image is usually stable, and closer to the edges there is a slight shake of the picture. It is also sad that the audio quality during video recording is not very impressive.

Multimedia

In the video era, YouTube and Facebook, as well as Spotify and Apple Music, media players are used less and less by default. Of course, quite a few people continue to do business with them, but there is nothing new to say about the dedicated music and video apps in the Galaxy A9: they do their job very well, with support for most of the major formats and with no playback issues.

Note that the audio application automatically classifies your songs and looks nice. By clicking on the "Advanced" icon and choosing the option "Live sound" (SoundAlive), you will be able to quickly adjust the bass and treble, as well as set the balance between instruments and voice. Alternatively, you can click on the Details icon to display the full size equalizer.

Let's go further. Photo gallery refers to those things that almost everyone uses on a daily basis. In Galaxy A9, this aspect is implemented typical of Samsung: you can resize thumbnails of images, making them smaller so that later they will return to them faster, or larger for better previews. Some quick editing options are also available, such as basic effects and cropping.

Call quality

Similar to multimedia, this device is nothing new in terms of call handling capabilities. Voices sound good through the speaker, and so does the voice quality on an outgoing call. Of course, everything here depends on a number of variables, for example, your network coverage, current state, location, quality of your subscriber's network, etc.

Battery life

The Samsung Galaxy A9 has a very large 4,000mAh battery, which is essential to power the huge display. Depending on how long you have been using your phone, the battery life of the hero of our review will vary from “okay” to “excellent”. On days when you only periodically check the time or send quick messages, the battery of this phablet can last up to 2 days. But using such a device is very little - it's almost pointless, right? If you tinker with the device in question long enough during the day, then it can be in service for about a day and a half. If you don't let go of it at all, then you will have enough of it for no more than a day - in principle, this is a completely satisfactory indicator.

We did our own testing of the A9 (2016) battery and can report that it lasted 10 hours and 10 minutes. At first glance, this is not bad, but as we said above, this indicator is not ideal for all use cases. Also note that the battery in this phablet is non-removable, but its charging time is quite tolerable - 122 minutes from 0 to 100 percent.

Conclusion

The Galaxy A9 is a large yet elegant smartphone. Studying it from all sides, we can conclude that it does not have serious drawbacks - its performance is fairly accurate at the price. Having bought such a device, you will get not the best, but quite good device that will not disappoint you in anything - it is just good, but not perfect. We believe the A9 (2016) is a smart choice given that you don't have to pay too much. Of course, the presence of a large 6-inch display would mean that this phablet is suitable for those who want to have a panel as large as possible. For a more palatable proposal, we would recommend that you turn your attention to the A7 or A8 (both 2016), which have 5.5 and 5.7-inch screens, respectively, and have almost the same features. You can also look at the Galaxy Note 5 as a more expensive but more sophisticated phablet.

On the other hand, if you do not have any acceptable options for smartphones with displays less than 6 inches, then the Galaxy A9 is very a good option, with a nice design and no major problems.

Pros:

  • sleek design;
  • large display;
  • a decent level of performance.

Minuses:

  • too large;
  • display colors could be more natural;
  • TouchWiz should be smoother to work with.

Last year's Galaxy A lineup has received sincere acclaim from critics and users alike. Moreover, the latter voted with their wallet. And if the product is commercially successful, then it’s just a matter of time before a receiver arrives. So why should we be surprised at the release of the Galaxy A 2016?

We have already talked about small representative new series - A3. Now we come from the other end. Our guest today is the A9 phablet. So let's take a closer look at it.

Design

Samsung's budget smartphones have always been distinguished by excellent design and premium materials. AND new Galaxy The A9 is no exception. While the rest of the state employees put themselves in metal armor, Sammy wraps gadgets in glass. Yes, it is not as strong. But you're not going to drop this beauty on the floor, are you?

Samsung Galaxy A9. Like A3 but Big

Samsung's new phablet is available in three colors: white, gold and fashionable rose gold. But whatever the choice, you get a stylish device that exudes reliability and quality. Plus, it fits perfectly in your hand. A fly in the ointment is a weight of 200 grams. Not so unimportant for a 6-inch. However, this does not cause any particular difficulties in use.

Screen and interface

Samsung is the world leader in AMOLED displays. Therefore, a great screen is an integral part of any gadget of the Korean company. This statement applies to the Galaxy A9 in full measure. It is equipped with a huge 6-inch AMOLED panel. And although its creators should think about 2K, the current FullHD-resolution looks just gorgeous.

The display of the phablet is distinguished by good color reproduction and excellent clarity. But its main decoration is brightness - 560 nits at its peak. This is enough to enjoy a movie on the clearest day. On the other hand, turn on the device in complete darkness and it will adjust the glow on its own to protect your eyes.

New items screen. Vivid colors and Android Lollipop

The operating system is a little disappointing. We are waiting for a meeting with the proven Android 5.1 Lollipop in the TouchWiz shell. But let's hope that the upgrade to Zephyr will not be long in coming.

In general, the familiar interface does not cause any problems. Convenient, practical and very fast. The only thing is that you need two hands to use the device comfortably. But the size itself hinted at this very unequivocally.

Performance, connectivity and batteries

The heart of the Galaxy A9 is the Snapdragon 652 chipset, lined with 3GB of RAM. Thanks to him, the phablet is almost not inferior to last year's flagships in the face of the Galaxy S6 or Note 5. And this despite the huge screen.

As regards memory, it is also complete order. The device carries standard 32GB of onboard storage that can be expanded with a microSD slot.

AnTuTu and Geekbench3 performance benchmarks

As for the connection, comments are unnecessary here. The smartphone has excellent network connectivity and excellent audibility. Of course, operator coverage plays an important role. But this is true for any device.

The batteries deserve special praise. Sammy did not skimp on their capacity, installing a 4000mAh module. And although the huge screen consumes energy like a hungry dragon, the stock will last at least 10 hours of video watching. Or for a couple of days of regular use with half an hour of talking and surfing the Internet.

The charge for autonomy was the charging speed. From 0 to 100%, the phablet takes 122 minutes to charge !.

Camera

Samsung Galaxy A9 is equipped with a modern 13MP module with an optical image stabilization system and a wide-angle lens with an aperture of f / 1.9. An 8MP camera is designed for selfies and video calls.

The main camera of the device allows you to take great pictures. Yes, it is far from the Galaxy S7, but in its class it is one of the best. Among the shortcomings, we can note a small skew in the color rendition towards the cold side.

At the same time, the phablet does an excellent job with indoor and macro photography.

Samples of shooting with the main camera

As for selfies, you expect something more from the 8MP module. Although the pictures are sharp, they lack brightness and colors look washed out. So, if you are an ardent fan of "yourself", then you are at the wrong address.

Output

The new phablet from Samsung manages to combine enormous size and aristocratic elegance of form. It has a great screen and powerful filling... And also outstanding autonomy. All this creates a portrait of a great gadget that is worth the money.

Large device for strong hands

Of course, such a device is not worth buying for those who are not ready to handle a huge screen. There are more compact devices for them. And, of course, cameras. For filmmakers, it's best to take a closer look at the flagship line.

This article is an expanded first look at a smartphone. Htc one A9. I have already described all the main points on the device, but here I will touch upon those points that I did not have time to tell about in the format of a first glance. Go!

At times, almost all companies that produce Android smartphones have tried, to one degree or another, to try to copy Apple products... At the same time, Apple itself often does not create, but improves on previously implemented ideas, but implements it so well and efficiently that in the end, others are left to try to do the same. After all, it is more important here not who was the first, but who was the first to do something in the best way, and in this regard, Apple often found themselves out of competition. I suppose today this copying of different companies from each other is obvious to everyone, and it is foolish to try to say the opposite. When it comes to copying Apple products, only two of the ten largest and most popular manufacturers that do not copy Apple come to mind are Sony, but it has its own way and LG, which is more busy with its main competitor on a geographical basis - Samsung. On the other side, we have just Samsung, as well as HTC, Huawei, Lenovo, Meizu, Xiaomi and many others. Some of them borrowed Apple's ideas quite a bit, mainly the design, others were delayed to the fullest: a similar appearance, a similar interface ideology, packaging, product presentation. I will not name specific brands and products, probably, you yourself can roughly understand what and whom are we talking about.

The new HTC One A9 is an attempt by the company to take the idea of Apple iPhone as a whole product, and while it would be strange to deny external similarity, in fact, everything is much more interesting than just a similar design. I'm sure no one at HTC will like this comparison and juxtaposition, but to deny the moments when any common user sees the similarity is also strange, you will agree. Therefore, I decided to be honest first of all with myself, as well as with you, dear readers: I had an hour and a half for the first acquaintance with HTC One A9, and I really liked this smartphone. In many ways, it seems to me, precisely because HTC decided on a bold act for itself - to take someone else's idea and try to implement new smartphone based on this idea, using our own developments and technologies.

When I saw the A9 in the pictures, apart from skepticism and “phi, they copied the iPhone,” I didn't have any thoughts when I took it in my hand - the attitude towards the device changed radically. I know I've had this with HTC before, but here the situation is not the same as with the One M8 or M9 - here the real wow effect is for me personally.

Design, body materials, assembly

The base of the case is aircraft-grade aluminum, the traditional HTC unibody case without removable elements is used. The front part is Gorilla Glass 4 with a 2.5D effect, that is, it is slightly convex and with bends at the edges, the same is used in the Apple iPhone since the sixth model, in Meizu Pro 5 and some other smartphones.

Due to the glass, the smartphone looks great from the front, although, of course, there is a similarity to the iPhone for the very same reason. For me personally, this is not a problem - I like the design of the Apple iPhone, and, accordingly, the new HTC One A9.

On the other hand, there are similarities as well, but here you can't blame HTC for copying. The company introduced its One M7 back in 2013 and for the first time implemented an aluminum case and antenna routing using plastic inserts flush with the "back" surface; Apple first used a similar solution in 2014 - in the iPhone 6.

HTC One A9, HTC One M9, HTC One M9 Plus

For my taste, the design of the back panel in HTC One A9 is one of the most successful among smartphones with metal cases. Firstly, because there are no plastic inserts, like some. Secondly, we tried to make the strips for routing the antennas as thin and neat as possible, they look quite appropriate here and are not striking.

The device will be presented in four colors: dark gray, silver, gold and cherry. The dark gray and silver versions will go on sale initially, followed by the gold and cherry versions.

In the pictures, "cherry" looks more like red, but in reality it seemed to me nevertheless closer to the burgundy and cherry colors.

The important thing is that HTC One A9 is not at all like the previous One line devices - it is more accurate in everything. The shape of the body, the controls, the camera peephole - everything is done a little more gracefully and correctly, in my opinion. And from such details, an integral image is formed, which, again, I personally really liked in reality.

At the same time, it feels like it's all the same traditional for HTC quality - the metal pleasantly cools the hand, aluminum undergoes long-term processing and feels very smooth, the assembly is excellent.

Dimensions (edit)

In terms of dimensions, the new A9 is comparable to the two previous familiar devices of the company - HTC One M8 and M9. Actually, the dimensions of all three models are very close, but the A9 is more comfortable in the hand than the M9, for example. The latter had sharp edges in several color options, and this slightly worsened the feel from the device in the hand, in the case of the A9, the body is smoother, and for this reason the smartphone is more comfortable to hold and use.

I would like to note that HTC has finally managed to move away from its proprietary “triple bezel ™” design, and the front panel in the One A9 is made more neat and beautiful than in all previous smartphones in the One line.

Let's compare the dimensions of different smartphones so that you can roughly understand what the HTC One A9 is in comparison with other devices:

  • Apple iPhone 6S(4.7 ”) - 138.3 x 67.1 x 7.1 mm, 143 grams
  • HTC One M9(5 ") - 144.6 x 70 x 9.6 mm, 157 grams
  • (5 ") - 145.7 x 70.8 x 7.3 mm, 143 grams
  • Samsung Galaxy S6(5.1 ”) - 143.4 x 70.5 x 6.8 mm, 138 grams
  • Sony Xperia Z5(5.2 ") - 146 x 72 x 7.3 mm, 154 grams

Control elements

HTC One A9 does not differ much from the M9 in terms of the set of controls. On the right edge there is a volume rocker and a power button, on the left there are compartments for a SIM card and a memory card. Above - a decorative plastic insert, below - a speaker, microUSB connector, microphone and 3.5 mm mini-jack.

Slots for a memory card and a SIM card in nanoSIM format are separate.

The power key is very well made - it is ribbed, due to which it is convenient to feel the button while you take the smartphone out of your pocket, for example, and activate the screen if you are not using a scanner. In general, the solution is unusual and convenient.

Unlike HTC One M8 and M9, there is a fingerprint scanner located under the screen and combined with a touch key.

In general, HTC introduced the scanner back in smartphone One M9 Plus, but there it was, frankly, very bad - constant reading errors, the need to apply a finger at a certain angle (even though many finger prints could be entered). On the HTC One A9, the scanner is much more accurate. Up to five different fingerprints can be "hammered" into memory; ideally, each fingerprint is best done for the same finger, just at different angles. In terms of fingerprint scanning accuracy, the HTC One A9 is much better than the M9 Plus. Although, I will not be cunning, the new devices from Samsung and Meizu Pro 5, for example, are still far from the device from HTC to the accuracy of scanning and triggering provided by smartphones from Apple.

Screen

HTC One A9 has a 5 "" screen with a resolution of 1920x1080 pixels. An AMOLED matrix is used, which in itself is unusual for a Taiwanese company. At the same time, no one at HTC talks about better color rendering or any other parameters, energy efficiency was on the agenda when choosing a screen, so the choice fell on AMOLED.

The color rendition is typical for AMOLED, with a slight bias towards cold tones. In the settings, you can select the sRGB profile, and the colors will become slightly warmer, but also paler. The viewing angles are maximum, there is a good margin of brightness. I did not notice any graininess of the image, in general the screen is good. Personally, as an adherent of high-quality IPS matrices, the new AMOLED displays no longer seem bad to me, so, I suppose, now it's a matter of getting used to, nothing more.

Below are the pictures to compare the screens of HTC smartphones, from left to right - HTC One M8, HTC One M9, HTC One A9:

Camera

One M7 had an ultra-pixel camera module, One M8 had an ultra-pixel module with an additional camera, One M9 returned to the usual format and installed a 20-megapixel camera, and the additional one was removed, and finally, the One M9 Plus returned an additional camera, but the module left the usual, at 20 MP, not ultrapixel. Everything changed again on HTC One A9. It uses a 13 MP module with an optical stabilization system, flash of two different tones and a good aperture value - f / 2.0. There are no ultrapixels. Of the modern trends, only laser focusing is missing, everything else is in place.

The camera interface has remained almost unchanged, except that manual mode shooting was allocated in a separate button in the choice of shooting modes.

Manual mode (here called "Pro") is still one of the strongest points of the company's smartphones. It allows you to change the white balance, exposure, ISO, shutter speed and manually adjust the focus. Moreover, in this mode you can shoot in RAW format for later processing in a photo editor.

To evaluate the quality of pictures taken with the main camera of HTC One A9, I suggest you compare pictures taken with three smartphones: HTC One A9, HTC One M9 as the company's previous attempt to improve the camera and LG G4 as one of the standards in terms of camera in modern smartphones.

The short summary is simple - the camera in the new HTC One A9 has become better than it was in the M9 - the frames are sharper, deeper, despite the fact that the resolution of the photos is lower. The presence of optical stabilization helps to get good results in low light conditions or when shooting in the evening. Again, in manual mode with OIS, you can choose a slower shutter speed without sacrificing the sharpness of the frame compared to the One M9. But all these comparisons take place only within the HTC line, and perhaps you can add here smartphones from Sony, as well as small B-brands. From the sample shots, you can see for yourself that LG G4 is simply out of place here, it is a different level of photos: detail, sharpness, dynamic range. In all respects, the camera of this smartphone is a cut above, unfortunately for HTC.

I really love the Taiwanese brand, but on the part of cameras, I just have nothing to argue. The LG G4 also has a full-fledged manual mode, and to make sure that the device is seriously detached from HTC smartphones, just take a look at these "crops" from several photos.

HTC One A9 / HTC One M9 / LG G4

Yes, there is an improvement in the camera in HTC One A9 compared to M8, M9 and M9 Plus, the camera in the new smartphone has become more versatile, easier to use due to optical stabilization, faster in terms of focusing speed, but it's still average. level, nothing more.

The front camera in HTC One A9 is a module with a resolution of 4 ultrapixels, f / 2.0, 26.8 mm, pixel size - 2 micrometers, sensor size - 1/3 ". Overall, despite the outstanding specs, this is just a decent camera, on par with most flagships.

Video recording... Video in standard mode is recorded at a maximum resolution of 1920x1080 pixels, H.264, the recording speed is 30 frames per second (variable), the bit rate is 42 Mbps. During recording, you can manually change the focus point, there is also tracking autofocus and optical stabilization.

Platform and memory

At the heart of the new HTC One A9 is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 617 platform with a quad-core 1.5 GHz (Cortex-A53) and quad-core 1.2 GHz (Cortex-A53) processors. RAM 2 GB, built-in memory for data storage - 16 GB. There is a slot for a microSD memory card, the device works with cards of any size, cards up to 128 GB are guaranteed. As you can see, the characteristics are not amazing, but you need to remember that the smartphone does not have a screen with a 2k or 4k resolution and the main emphasis is not at all on the fact that this is the most powerful and fastest device on the market. The platform chosen is a balance between performance, power consumption and stability. Again, if you do not forget that quite recently the company got burned on the flagship chipset from Qualcomm, the choice of a weaker solution does not seem so strange.

Desktops don't lag, everything works fast. In Antutu, the smartphone shows average results, and, of course, this device is not for games, but with daily use I did not notice any problems or lack of performance.

Autonomous work

The smartphone uses a non-removable Li-Ion battery with a capacity of 2150 mAh, which is noticeably less than in all previous smartphones of the company, starting with HTC One M7 (2300 mAh), HTC One M8 (2600 mAh) and HTC One M9 (2840 mAh). Even in devices that are simpler and cheaper, the company usually uses a battery with a capacity of 2500 mAh or more. On the one hand, it is incorrect to compare the battery capacity of HTC One A9 with such models as M8 and M9, this smartphone does not have a top platform, which means that the power consumption is lower. The second point, the company uses a screen made by AMOLED technology in the A9, this also affects the battery consumption for the better, it is lower here. But, as practice has shown, these solutions do not allow to hide the difference in battery capacity by almost one and a half times. Simply put, of all HTC's new smartphones, this one, the One A9, is the least performing.

Usually, a smartphone is enough for me for the whole day, while the active screen time for different devices is 5-6 hours, I take the device off the charge at 9-10 am and, using it actively all day, I get a completely discharged smartphone in the late afternoon , by 20-22 o'clock. With very active use, when the device is not released from my hands, it sits down almost "to zero" by about 16-17 o'clock in the afternoon (HTC One M8, M9, LG G4, Meizu MX4 Pro), and I charge it from an external battery , for me this is a normal situation. In the case of HTC One A9, I get a completely discharged smartphone by 17-18 o'clock, and if I use it without letting go, taking it off charge at 10 am, then it discharges to zero by 13-14 o'clock in the afternoon, that is, after about 3 hours of constantly active screen.

Again, for me there is not much difference between these indicators for HTC One A9 and other devices, because I am used to charging any smartphone from an external battery in the middle of the day, but the operating time of the new HTC One A9 has become worse compared to previous models. In short, in terms of battery life, the new A9 is a step backward for HTC, and the AMOLED screen paired with a platform that is not the most energy-consuming does not make the difference. Unfortunately.

The smartphone supports fast charging, but for this you will need to purchase a separate charging unit.

Interfaces

The device works in GSM, HSDPA and LTE (LTE Cat 6) networks. You can enable and disable wireless interfaces through the settings or by adding to main screen one of several widgets, as well as using the notification curtain.

To synchronize with a PC and transfer data, a complete microUSB cable ( USB interface 2.0). The smartphone has support for USB On-The-Go (USB OTG) - you can connect flash drives and other drives to the device via an adapter.

Bluetooth... Built-in Bluetooth 4.1 module with A2DP and LE support.

Wi-Fi (802.11 a / ac / b / g / n)... HTC One A9 uses a dual band Wi-Fi module. There is a possibility of "sharing" 2G / 3G / 4G Internet connection via Wi-Fi.

DLNA... The smartphone supports DLNA technology: if you have a DLNA-compatible media server and other devices at home, you can use HTC One A9 with them. For example, to output sound or video from the device directly to the TV.

NFC... As in the previous devices of the company, the A9 has NFC support.

Navigation

HTC One A9 has GPS / Glonass support, it takes a minimum amount of time to search for satellites, from 5 to 15 seconds. The device has preinstalled programs Google maps and Google Navigation. Google Navigation is used as the main navigation program.

For convenient work with a smartphone when it is in the car in the mount, there is a special mode "In the car". When you turn it on, you see large icons on the desktop, there are also special enlarged versions of the main applications: address book, music, settings, dialing. If desired, you can add shortcuts to other programs in this menu. In this mode, you can use a special assistant, a utility that performs voice commands like "Call + contact name", "Play + track name" and some others. It is worth paying attention to this program if you are going to use HTC One A9 while driving, it really works and recognizes commands well if you pronounce them more or less loudly and clearly.

Sound

The company notes that for HTC One A9, the priority is given to the sound quality in the headphones, and not in the speakers, as it was before. Simply put, HTC promises cool sound through a 3.5 mm mini-jack, which uses a separate amplifier, but the price for this is a departure from the proprietary BoomSound technology for external speakers. The new smartphone has one call speaker located at the bottom.

The sound in the external speaker of the HTC One A9 is no longer as loud, deep and bass as it was in the M7, M8 and M9, which is logical. But in general, the sound of this speaker seemed to me quite acceptable, at the level of most other current smartphones, no worse.

As for the sound in the headphones, here it is difficult for me to give any estimates. HTC One A9 supports lossless audio with (24-bit, 192 Khz) and BoomSound technologies with Dolby Audio Surround, but a bear stepped in my ear, and for me the device just sounds good, without details.

Android 6.0, HTC Sense 7

The smartphone runs Android 6.0, and the proprietary interface is HTC Sense 7. It should be noted here that HTC is clearly aware of the progress of Android and is not going to hinder it. In the new versions of Sense, the company plans to gradually remove some of the proprietary chips, replacing them with basic ones for the "android", because they are implemented no worse, and often already more convenient. Sense is gradually changing, and this is logical, the company will focus on already implemented services and support for those capabilities that are not yet available in Android or are not so conveniently implemented.

Various themes, categories with dynamic optimization and auto-tuning depending on how you use your smartphone, news feed and other useful features of Sense remain in place.

The notification curtain and the lock window in A9 are standard, and this is the right decision, they are made convenient and understandable in Android.

But the choice of the standard manager of running applications (when the windows are cascading) instead of its proprietary one (a matrix of mini pictures) seems to me wrong. HTC has made this utility much more convenient and intuitive. It became like this:

Otherwise, this is the usual Sense, it is still a beautiful and neat shell.

Case HTC Dot View

Traditionally for One series devices, DotView branded covers will be offered to the new HTC One A9. The cost and color options are still being specified, so I suggest you just take a look at this accessory. You probably already know about its capabilities.

Conclusion

I had no complaints about the signal reception quality for a week and a half of using HTC One A9. The device catches the network well, the sound in the conversational dynamics is clear, without wheezing and extraneous noise, there is a volume reserve. The vibration alert is relatively strong and is felt in most situations. The volume and sound quality of the ringing speaker, of course, are not the same as in HTC smartphones with stereo speakers, but on the whole everything is acceptable.

The new HTC One A9 differs from previous smartphones in the series primarily in its general approach: the company decided to move away from its usual scheme with attempts to release the best flagship. I must admit, for all my love for HTC, these attempts have not been very successful in recent years, and this step looks justified.

In HTC One A9, the emphasis is not on primary characteristics like platform, processor and amount of RAM, but on the overall impression of the device. Yes, this is probably the approach you are familiar with, by which Apple is successfully working, suggesting that the user not "bother" with what the next "iPhone" has inside, but simply use it. And while Apple ramps up the specs of new devices and complicates iOS itself, adding many new features and losing OS stability, Android companies are starting to go in a different direction, down the path of simplification. On the HTC One A9, this is clearly visible, and personally I like these changes. When you take this smartphone in hand, you don't want to think about how many cores there are and whether it really is the most technologically advanced, no. You just turn it on and start using a convenient device - that's what the HTC One A9 is made for.

In fact, in the case of the A9, there is only one objective problem - I cannot view this device in a vacuum, forgetting about the market around it. Yes, the new smartphone from HTC turned out to be cool - it is beautiful, fits comfortably in the hand, with a good display, good sound, with a beautiful shell and a camera that has become better than in the company's devices before. But as soon as other smartphones appear near HTC One A9, the picture deteriorates. In terms of battery life, the A9 is far from the flagships. The improved camera is a step forward for HTC, but if you compare the HTC One A9 with the LG G4, Samsung Galaxy S6, or Apple iPhone 6 and 6S, the difference (not in HTC's favor) is just very indecent. The AMOLED screen is not bad, but nothing more. The smartphone has lost one of the proprietary chips - cool surround sound in the speakers. What's left? Great design, it can't be taken away. Convenient Sense too.

The main question is how much will the company's new device cost? Here I have nothing to please you, unfortunately. A price tag is expected in the region of 45,000 rubles, give or take a couple of thousand. For a smartphone with characteristics from the middle price segment, this is very strange, and with such a pricing policy, the new HTC One A9 will, to put it mildly, not a mass device even within the lineup of the company itself. Obviously, the focus with the new smartphone is on the US market and on a number of other markets, but not on Russia. Our high cost simply negates any prospects for this generally good device.

The design and capabilities of the HTC One family have long been recognized by experts and consumers around the world. The HTC One A9s aims to continue this tradition. In creating this smartphone, we drew inspiration from the natural beauty of the world around us. The novelty is made in a double finish metal case - another family trait of the One series. At the same time, the device is not only beautiful, but also extremely ergonomic - having a 5-inch screen, HTC One A9s fits comfortably in the hand, and the grooved power button is easy to touch. We paid special attention to the reliability of the device in everyday use - the new product has withstood hundreds of tests for drops, mechanical stress and extreme temperature conditions.

“The HTC One A9s is a high-end smartphone with a metal body, crafted with unparalleled attention to detail, and at the same time addressed to a wide audience,” says Chialin Chang, President of HTC Smartphones. rich functional content. It is a unique personal device inspired by nature and built for life. "

HTC One A9s reliably protects data without forcing the owner to sacrifice the usability of the device. The ultra-fast under-screen fingerprint sensor is capable of recognizing touch from virtually any angle. The scanner can also be used to launch apps requiring authorization that have been restricted with HTC Boost +, powerful tool optimizing the performance and security of your smartphone.

With HTC Boost +, your phone is always ready to work with maximum efficiency. A powerful hardware and software optimization tool, HTC Boost + controls the dynamic reallocation of smartphone resources, regulates the power consumption of background tasks, frees up memory, deletes temporary files and reminds the owner of rarely used applications. Full control is only half the battle. HTC One A9s gives the user a new level of freedom to customize the phone to their liking. The desktop design function of the NTS Freestyle removes the limitations of the standard "grid", which dictates the location of objects on home screen... Now you can get creative with customizing your home screen: move icons and widgets as you want, rotate, resize, overlay. You can go even further and link pictures and icons to any application, thereby creating a completely individual look of your smartphone.

We are accustomed to the fact that a modern smartphone records all the significant events of our life. The main camera of the HTC One A9s with 13MP resolution and autofocus copes well with a variety of shooting conditions. The back-illuminated sensor ensures excellent image quality even in low light, and photography enthusiasts will appreciate the enhanced RAW professional mode.

The 5MP front camera makes HTC One A9s a true master of self-portraits. You don't even need hands to do this - a voice command or even just a smile in Auto Selfie mode is enough. The Quick Makeup function allows you to add the final touches - for example, adjust the skin tone. Self-portrait must be flawless!

WITH great camera it is easy to get carried away with creating photo and video masterpieces. HTC One A9s will take care of the safety of all memories, without exception. The new product offers unlimited space for cloud storage of photos and videos with Google app Photos. In addition to secure storage and easy access, it is also very convenient - the search function with support for sorting by face, place, object and theme will quickly navigate even the most extensive collection. Well, for even more flexible management of the image library, you can always resort to keyword search.

Inspired by nature and built for life, the new HTC One A9s is an outstanding smartphone, with power and elegance to meet the highest demands. Availability of HTC One A9s on the Russian market will be announced later.

  1. Operating frequencies may vary depending on the operator in different regions. mobile communications and the current location of the subscriber. 4G LTE technology availability varies by country, carrier and current cellular network conditions. The data transfer speed also depends on the current conditions in the mobile operator's network.
  2. The available storage space is less, as the smartphone software takes up some of it. Approximately 9.8 GB available for user-generated content. Approximately 4 GB is available for storing user data.
  3. Test conditions: Battery performance varies depending on the network parameters of the smartphone, its location, signal strength, function settings, mode of using the smartphone, and many other factors. Actual results may vary. Batteries have a limited number of charge / discharge cycles. The battery life and the number of charge-discharge cycles depend on the mode of use and the settings of the smartphone. The batteries have been tested under laboratory conditions on selected HTC smartphones. All devices connected to the 4G network in all tests, except for tests with a Wi-Fi connection. During HD video playback, video in MP4 format with 720p (HD) quality was used, the sound was played through headphones. In doing so, standard rage and volume levels were used (without Dolby technology). An MP3 file was used during audio playback. Listening took place through headphones at a standard volume level (without Dolby technology connection). Internet tests over Wi-Fi were conducted using a dedicated web server. During the test, saved versions of 10 popular web pages were viewed. The standard settings have been used with the auto brightness turned off. Standby time specifications (“specs”) are an industry standard intended only for comparing various mobile devices under the same conditions. Power consumption in standby mode depends on many factors, including: parameters of the network in which the device operates, phone settings, current coordinates, travel speed on the ground, signal strength and operator equipment load. Thus, it is possible to compare different device models with each other according to this criterion only under controlled laboratory conditions. With real use of any model of mobile devices, the standby time may be significantly shorter and depend on the factors described above.
